[flash counter] reset flash counter with Odin? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, so I've had problems with what appears to be 'sudden death' - random freezes - unfortunately I havent been able to reset the flash counter before it all went to hell.
I can now ONLY enter my Download mode. While connected with Odin I get a yellow box when my phone is 'added',
I tried to flash stock Android back on my phone. This failed so I now only get the message "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue".
Only thing I want to do is reset the counter, so I can take it to Samsung. Otherwise I'm totally screwed. Any tips? :crying:

If you have i9300, use USB JIG... Last chance for you.
If you have i9305, you're screwed.

Upss, thought it does but I came from SGS2 straight to i9305 and didn't test it on i9300. Cheers

It's been ages since Sgs2 supported Jig-based counter reset: more specifically not since 4.x bootloader.
Flash counter can only be reset through TriangleAway which at leased did use a custom update.zip to modify the storage so you could flash it. Modern bootloaders for s3 however also have a red triangle which cannot be reset to date (afaik)

looks like im screwed. Found out: USB JIG does NOT reset the counter. This only worked on S2.
Talked to a guy at a phoneshop today, he said that 90% of the phones that have flash counts are still being repared by Samsung. So I see no other way than acting like nothing is up and see what Samsung will say.

Just to make sure, which version of Odin you've used? Sometimes it doesn't work on 1.85 but works on 3.0x

I tried to flash 3 different stock ROMs with 3 different versions of Odin: 1.85, 3.05 and 3.07.
No succes. I brought it to a gsm repair shop. Hope they can do something. All I need is access Android to reset the counter, and then Samsung can have it if the problem still occurs.
If they can't fix it, I'm gonna send it anyway and hope for the best.
So I guess it's a case of bad luck; sudden death (random freezes) in combination with a rooted phone --> First reset your flash counter!!!

Search for, download and install triangle-away from the play store. It will tell you the count and give you the option to reset to 0

Triangle Away only works on ICS-based ROMS.
If you don't have ICS installed, I would suggest getting a USB jig since that resets your counter to 0.
If you have ICS and are rooted, you can download Triangle Away directly to your phone (play store charges you $3 -.-) Chainfire has a thread here on XDA where you can download Triangle Away for free.
I have ginger bread rom, 2.3.3 back on it now. Not rooted. My usb port is messed up, so I cannot hook up to usb. Just to charge. So I was hoping there was a way to check the counter before I send it into see what they say

You need a USB jig to reset the counter. You can buy one for $3 on Amazon
Will it work even with my usb port issue?

Boot to download mode. It will not display a count at all if your count is zero. Otherwise you'll see a count if a non-Samsung signed kernel was ever flashed to that phone.

Yes. You turn off your phone and insert the USB jig. Your phone will automatically boot into download mode and erase the flash counter.

Not a definite, actually. If his usb port is jacked, there it's a possibility it won't work.
Ok. I checked in download mode. It says one count. If I send it for service, chances are it won't be covered with thatone count on there, correct?

I know that, but it's better to try out first and it's only $3.
Since he's on 2.3.3, he still has the old bootloaders.
I had 2.3.5 rom on there before I went back to stock

do exactly, will not require usb. if you got a rooted phone
check you have i9100 not i9100G
root your phone
install mobile odin
flash stock ICS ROM from sammobile / checkfus [not the intratech's]
flash using mobile odin
afterboot root the ics using cf-root
install triangleaway and remove counter / triangle [double check if download mode and triangle away says same thing about counter]
now flash your region stock GB back using mobile odin
now you are on stock GB without counter and triangle.
now wipe using *2767*3855# to finish the update and fix csc and stuff.
I have gt-9100m. Will that work?

[Q] Any way to reset Odin counter yet?

My question is basically what the title asks. Is there any way to reset the Odin counter yet? Apparently Triangle Away does not work yet for Sprint's S3 (but it does work for the international I believe). Does anyone know if chainfire is working on making the AT&T/T-Mobile/Sprint/Verizon versions compatible? Or does anyone know any other ways? I tried using the USB Jig I use for my Epic 4G Touch but it does not work.
And what makes the AT&T variant special that they can avoid tripping the counter?
What?

that would be cool if they had a reset counter for tmobiles gs3.

The AT&T variant has a method to flash a custom recovery without tripping the flash counter. I'm just wondering what's different about that phone that allows this.
wow 2 threads in a row I'm tired of seeing posted...
Here I think this could be of some help.. https://twitter.com/ChainfireXDA. And as he says a few posts back the hardware is completely different between these and the international version. As of now he doesn't know if and when triangle away will be available for us. With that link you'll be the first to know. I'm sure if the counter gets reset he'll be the 1 to do it. And all the methods that don't trip the counter involve installing a rooted system which in itself doesn't trip the counter and then manually flashing tha recovery via adb

Just to clarify: all methods i have seen involve installing a "stock" roms, with root injected, via ODIN. The counter sees these types of roms as an official rom. Flashing anything goes else via ODIN trips the counter. However, once you have root you can use adb or dd in a terminal emulator to load a custom recovery or just load mobile ODIN. You can the use either of these to flash any custom rom without tripping the counter.

Yes, this is true. But I guess we all add to our counter initially by flashing CWM through Odin when rooting, which our phone registers as an insecure kernel.

FYI, I'm working on creating this file for T-Mobile GS3. If successful, I might try to create it for other carriers as well but will need help testing the files with the caveat that I might trigger your counter, I might brick your phone, and I might cause your phone to come alive and eat your dog.
I didn't find this forum and the method of rooting without tripping the counter until I had already loaded two roms. I can do an exchange at AT&T for a different color phone for $35 within the next 30 days. Should I get a new phone and start fresh or not worry about it and hope that Chainfire figures out a solution?
Chainfire will most likely find a way to reset it, but I don't think you'd be able to exchange with an activated counter. The counter really doesn't matter unless you want to get your phone replaced or something. Jigs used to help us reset the counter for the S2 even while the phone was off but now jigs don't work and the only way is Triangle Away for the S3

Hmm I though CWM was flashed through adb not odin? With CWM installed I get a black screen with a unlock symbol and the words "Custom" underneath the lock before the boot-up animation and under setup>phone info>status it has Device Status 'Modified' but nothing about an unsecure kernel.

Reset flash counter (can't install triangle away)

Hi
I have a SIII, international version. My touch screen is not responding (hardware problem), but is displaying everything. System is working, hard and soft buttons also.
I want to send it in service, BUT, I had it rooted. Found my stock rom from my region, flash it with Odin, got rid of the root but I can't reset the flash counter. I can't install triangle away without touch working.
I don't know either if after flash the usb debugging is on or not, for using ADB (if it works). I am guessing is not.
Any ideas ?

I know that now. But even if I can use odin + CF to root it again, I still can not use triangle away.
Question, how I get rid of root CW+root after reseting (asuming I'll find a way), flashing again will not increase the counter ?

Every flash of custom roms/kernels from your your pc to the phone will raise the flash counter. Only flashes done with/on the phone don`t raise the counter. Unroot it , send it in and cross your fingers. Try doing a factory reset after unrooting. I once sent in a rooted and bricked I9000 and it got repaired under warranty.

Edit: any other way to enable usb debugging, like from recovery ?
Use a USB-OTG cable and attach a USB mouse to it. Very bad replacement for touchscreens but should get the stuff done

Going back to my stock ROM and kernel

Hi guys, i'm going to sell my galaxy s2 and the buyer want it all stock. I'm using the cm10 ROM on it. I've already downloaded the factory stock firmware on sammobile.com. Until there everything was ok, but now I'm not sure about the way to flash the stock firmware. Should I flash it by clockworkmod, as the customs Roms I've flashed before? Or should I flash it by Odin, like an unrooted phone?
Since now, thanks a lot for your help

Then wipe all in recovery

when doing this, will the yellow triangle go away, phone get unrooted, and flash counter reset to 0?
cus im sure the buyer would want any avaliable warranty back aswell.
It would probably be good to reset counter before flashing, maybe with Triangleaway. Once i flashed original rom over custom with MobileOdin. Everything went well.

No, to reset counter and remove triangle you can do it either with a usb jig or by downloading chainfire app "triangle away" (Search it on the play store")

When u're flashing samsung stocks it'll does full wipe include rom itself, kernel, root, user data & caches then turn all to factory value. So don't even too worries about all u said above. But it worth to use stock 4.0.3 & avoid stock 4.0.4 in case to avoid emmc superbrick bug if u still doubt about advancing..

If you flash a "samsung official rom" it will take the triangle away but it does not reset the counter.
I have flashed CM9 CM10 and 2.3 stock , 4.0 stock a few times and my count is at 7, each time i flash stock the triangle goes away but the counter keeps counting.

[Q] Odin won't detect i777

Hello! So I've had some vibration problems and discovered that its the headphone jack slot being slightly misplaced or something that causes this. My phone is still technically under warranty as long as i can revert it all back to stock. So i've been following this thread and trying to get all to work: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313659
But I ran into a problem. My stupid computer won't detect my i777 through odin! I've installed the i777 drivers and everything! I currently have the latest version of the shoshock rom installed (ICS), but when I enter download mode, it won't detect the phone normally. All i get from my PC's hardware manager is "gadget serial"
When i start odin, its supposed to show some #'s right? Its just blank in the boxes. When i tried flashing a .tar through PDA, i got a 0 success/0 fail status.
I'm stuck. Where do i go from here? Mobile Odin won't work because i can't find the add on for the i777.
What I have done is open up kies and put my phone in download mode then went to firmware recovery and applied it. It has worked twice for me and my comp doesn't recognize my phone

I don't think that'd work because i need to clear the bootloader flash count. To do that i need to flash a .tar file and i think you can only do that in odin?
YouTube how to make a usbjig or use chain fires triangle away I think it might reset the counter. I have not tried it yet. The ones that are for sell don't work on our phones but have read that making your own jig would reset the flash counter. Just suggestions

the flash count has nothing to do with odin seeing your phone. try a different usb port. if that doesnt work download samsung drivers from samsung not kies
But kies you can do a firmware recovery which will take back to stock. But it doesn't reset the counter.
