Micro SD won't lock or mount - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Everyone,
Today, I was trying to clean my Galaxy S2 and so I attempted to remove the Micro SD card (probably for the second time ever since I bought the phone). Anyways, quite gently I removed the card but after cleaning and putting everything back together, I tried to insert the card back but it wouldn't lock with the card slot and as a result, the micro SD card would not get mounted and I wouldn't be even able to put the battery back on since the card does stick out a bit. Anyways, being a fool I tried to jam it in and yes the battery went in and the phone started but I reckon I damaged the card slot even more than it was previously damaged.

I have tried everything. I disassembled the phone's rear end and tried to see if I could tinker with the lock in the card slot but to no avail. I believe the slot is directly attached to the mainboard and as a result, I haven't been able to do anything else about it. I believe the lock in the slot has been damaged and so, it won't take in the card completely. So just to be clear, this is all physically gone wrong. The card slot has a lock that clicks everytime you insert the card successfully, unfortunately it has stopped clicking on my phone and I am now missing out on 16/32gb worth of files etc.
I am not sure what to do so any advice from y'all would be greatly appreciated. I will try to take it to the Pacific Mall in Toronto tomorrow. I reckon only they can fix it and since my phone voids the Sammy Warranty, I'd have little or no chance of getting Samsung to fix it for me without costing me handful. If anyone of you has been on the same situation before, please feel free to share any tips or advice. I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions.

All you can do is take it to repair...

Thanks for replying. I am now realizing that more and more. Will see what happens later today. Anyone else ever stumbled upon something like this?

Try removing the card and getting a very small brush and see if you can clean the port at all. It seems too strange that when you removed it you can't replace it in the port again. Sounds like debris but it doesn't seem right. If you clean the port and no luck, return your phone to stock and send it off for repair, and play dumb, nearly always works.

Haha thanks for the awesome suggestion. I had been at Pacific Mall, store name is Cell 123, none of the other stores were willing to take the risk to fix the sd card slot. Basically its not dirt, its the connectors within the slot that seem a bit out of place. Can happen easily with wear and tear and if you like me pull and push the sd cards a lot. Well then it can definitely happen. Just one of those things I hate about Samsung. The quality of some of its hardware is not top notch.
So after 2 hours of playing with the slot, the store owner nailed it. It's not completely fixed though. Most of the time, the phone reads the sd card without any issue but 2 times already, it has failed to recognize it. I believe the lock is loose and as a result, the micro sd moves around and cant stay in its fixed position, so the phone fails to read it at times.

Btw, I'm newbie in this. So, sorry if I did something wrong.
My radio rom is GSM 02.19.21
I've configured my network in Network Setup Wizard, but it didnt helped.
My Prophet keeps popping up with Insert SIM card screen. I have to turn off phone(turn off phone signal) to make my Prophet work. By doing that, I cannot make any calls, but still be able to use other functions. And one thing is that the orange led is always ON !!!
Try and flash back to a WM5 Shipped ROM.

If nothing was being help by software,
Try .......
1. remove the sim, clean it a bit and put it back or
2. if the contact of the hardware is bad, try to put something a bit less then 1mm thick (like folding up a small paper) on the sim, put the battery back to force it tight, if you are lucky, it will be your temporary solution.
3. try to use the sim with other phone to double check if the sim was dead....
Good Luck

Not working too...Somebody help me please???
I had a similar problem a year ago. As dioxda2 said, take the sim card out, clena the contacts on the sim, and pull up with a pin, or similar, the contacts that are built into the phone.
I had just had the touch screen replaced the day before (the tech centre was literally round the corner from my work), and I was getting this message all the time. the technician did what I described, as he told me this was a common Prophet issue.
And it's been fine ever since...
This post is almost a year now.
Ok, I've figured out the problem. I bought second hand Prophet and there was this problem. So, I took it to the mechanician and he told me that my Prophet is damaged by liquid. I was surprised because the previous owner didn't told me so. The mechanician told me that look at the sticker at the back where the Sim slot is located.
"If the sticker is plain white, then it is fine. If it is pink, then it has been damaged by water."
The problem cannot be fixed. The mechanician cleaned my Prophet, but nothing happened. I was pissed off because this is my first WinMo device. So I took it and turn it on in the sink full of water. It vibrated, screen flashed, all leds shining and died. Later, I leave it dry and turn it back on again and it was fully functioning except my Sim card is not detected. I was shocked of the quality build of Prophet. I want to test how long it will go; I put it in my sink for several of times, same result happened but it is not dead yet. It was immortal device indeed. I took the only functional thing left, the battery, and throw away my Prophet as far as I can. Bye bye... My Immortal Prophet.
Anyway I bought it for around 100 dollars. This is quite an expensive lesson for me. If you guys are going to buy a second hand device, please make sure you check everything especially the sticker at the back!

[Q] Backflip into pool w/ Atrix

Bro got drunk at some Yahoo Fantasy Football event at his University and did a backflip into the pool with the Atrix I got him on Sunday (to think he's going to be a Doctor some day). ATT sent out a new Atrix and all that jazz, so I'm setting it back up (rerooting, titanium backup, etc).
Before he went to the party I was working on his phone and backed up everything with Titanium Backup and then made a copy of that backed up TB folder and added it to the micro SD card w/ all his media. That day after I punched him out (literally) I checked to see if the SIM card & micro SD card worked although they took major water damage. It turned out the SIM card was fine (tested it on my old Moto Backflip) but the micro SD card stopped working until I added into a micro SD adapter and I found all the files that got backed up.
I dragged all the Titanium Backup files into the new Atrix, but after I hit batch and try to restore everything under the restore tab is at 0. I checked to make sure the files I dragged into the hard drive of the phone after mounting and they are all there. The only thing is I see "?" before the name of the files in the file manager.
Was wondering if someone could help me figure out what the issue with TB is since it's not recognizing those files I backed up from his old Atrix on the new Atrix.
Thanks and yeah what a ****ty week, thank god for phone insurance (although it cost 125$ to get a new one)
Also, is there a way to access the hard drive on the phone also although it won't turn on? Probably not but thought I'd ask.
Edit: Here's the image of the question mark in the Atrix.
Edit x2: Link kinda big here's the url: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/120535/CIMG2157.JPG

in TB go to preferences and select back up location, then find your files and your done. run back up
i think he wants to restore, so go to 'restore folder' under settings and choose the folder u copied over
eh same thing. just gotta tell TB where your files are at in preferences /detect files....
Try putting the phone in rice If you didn't send it away that is. I had the same thing happen to my phone and since the rice fixed it, I was able to send the replacement phone back and save the $125.

Preferences > backup location > then hit the back button on the phone and it will back the folder up one at a time, then select sd card, then select TB
Nice that worked but I guess that's an old back up I did. Other then the rice method is there a way I can access the damaged phones folders?

Rice doesn't magically soak it up either. The rice won't absorb much water unless the phone is literally dripping wet.
Use silica gel packets instead. But them in bulk at a music shop.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Yes, silica is better for this situation, but rice is handy and often in the cabinet. Silica works better if you dont take your phone apart, but rice is an excellent alternative if you at least open up your phone at the screws. It may not seem like it, but rice does absorb moisture/water better than it appears.
I voided my warranty.

Anyone knows what to do and how to fix it?
But when the cable is in and gives power to the unit its starts normal and turns off normal.... and that rly starts to piss me off
So pls help a noob
that is the battery temperature warning.
For some reason the contacts on the battery may not be making clean contact.
Take the battery out and with a tooth brush clean the contacts on the phone and the battery.
reinsert and see if that solves the problem.

The usb/charging port that is so i got my phone back. they didnt wanna touch it couse they told me it would die sooner or later.. they could change the mainboard but they didnt wanna do it.. So i need to fix it my self. so i ordred a new usb/charging thingy and gonna replace it when i get it.. Ill update if it works or not (sry my sucky english)
Bro dunno but have I tried using a new battery? The symbol is a temperature/battery warning. Did I get it wet??

nope. has not got wet at all... Even tho the repair dudes says it "water" damaged.. .Anyhow.. i ordered a new battery too. so first gonna test that before i change the usb part.
Get the battery cover, hold each of the sides with you're fingers and bend so the middle of it is going in ward, bend fairly far, now try, fixed my battery problem which was similar to this, also it would alsol think it's charging when it's not and constantly vibrate, I had been bending the back before and just realised when the phone was screen down it was fine so realised was loose, hope you fix it

well, you are the first person who actually fixed the problem. No one in all the forums I've been reading was able to identify or fix it.
Could you please tell how you replace it? are there any instructions or ¨comprehensive guide¨to do it?' I'm having the same problem too.
Thank you
No one like my fix? Worked for me? Also adding a bit of tape to the back of the battery worked
well. wasnt hard tbh. Just take apart so u get inside the phone. take of all "screws?" so mainboard is loose. then take out the usb board and replace it.. .should be doable without taking out the entire mainboard. i just "tipped" it upwards so i got the cable thingy out... sry about my sucky english.. U need proper tools to do it. cheap tho but the "screws" is so damn small. And yes.. my phone still works perfect.
hmm thing i posten a guide to it somewhere.. give me a sec..

Touchscreen Issues

My Atrix seems to have a significant problem hopefully someone can help with. I dropped my phone and my screen had some issues when touching certain areas (ie. It wouldn't register as a touch during any app in certain parts of the screen)...so I replaced my LCD and Digitizer, and no luck, similar issues. So today I replaced the ribbon cable with a new one(with power button, front facing camera etc) ,and STILL the same issue.
I've tried new Roms, and done fresh/clean installs of everything but I've no idea what else I can now do, please help?

Although it doesn't make much sense, you may need to try the PDS partition fix. You'll need to google that and find the files and tutorial for fixing it.

Hey really appreciate your quick response to the issues I'm having.
I have tried PDS Partition Fix and unfortunately this hasnt helped ... both methods were followed to the letter and nothing the same issue applies.
Dont suppose there are any other suggestions that anybody can come up with?

Only other thing I can suggest is warranty.
when you replaced the lcd and digitizer did you clean it very well between them? I have seen the slightest amount of dust disturb the digitizer, also when holding the phone upright is it the "e" "s" "d" "x" area of the keyboard that is acting up?
Moreover
Unfortunately, the warranty is now void since unlocking the bootloader, which I knew was a risk. I cancelled my insurance too since the policy excess was ridiculous.
When replacing the digitizer I cleaned the connectors using a microfibre cloth, the ribbon cable connecting the digitizer to the board was also replaced, so potential board connector issue?
Its random, what works...if the screen was in quarters from top to bottom then quarter 1 and 3 do NOT work...so i cannot pull down notification bar unless I rotate screen, and use a working area of the touchscreen. But thanks to Go Launcher I have set up a swipe gesture for notifications. And thanks to perfect keyboard I can change the height of the keys so I can at least send a message. But this isnt ideal, since the keys are so small.
Any other thoughts on how to clean the connector properly or anyone experienced the same?
the digitizer connects to the speaker ribbon cable and then goes to the board, but that ribbon cable usually doesn't get damaged.
you can reflash a vanilla 4.5.91 and possibly not brick and if it comes back it wont show the unlocked text I don't recommend this due to some people experiencing hard bricks doing it. But then you might be able to return it.
you say its random, so does the entire screen work sometime? or is it always quarters 1 and 3? if its not changing I would say its a bad digitizer.
Well I've tried 3 different digitizers so I know this is not the issue.the change of ribbon cable was merely a stab in the dark. Its random the places that doesn't work, but ALWAYS the same places work/don't work...so quarter 1 and 3 DON'T, but 2 and 4 ALWAYS do.
How might a reflash work? I'm 99% certain this is now software related...my only other theory is the mainboard may be damaged in some way.
Reflashing may be an option, this is my current set up...I've upgraded the radio so whether this will cause issues I've no idea ...

it won't fix the problem but it is a way to remove the "unlocked" text from when you start up the phone, or are you completely out of warranty / no chance to return ?

[Q] Possible hardware failure: Phone overheats and external SD card not detected

Hello XDA.
I have been having a problem with my phone for almost 3 weeks now. Basically, my phone overheats randomly (possible fire hazard), which I think is caused by the CPU being stuck at max 1200 MHz. Battery also drains very quickly in that moment, running 100% to 0% in approximately 1.5 hours. It's not as hot now after I changed to CM10.1 (previously was on PAC-ROM v22), but it still runs very warm. I was thinking this could be because there was a time when I turned on the LED flash for some time (I think approximately 5 minutes), and I read an article somewhere that turning it on for extended periods of time might cause the internals to melt or malfunction. How big is the possibility of this happening, and what are my options if it is the problem?
The second problem has actually happened a long time ago, but now recurs with the above problem. At that time, I flashed a new ROM (it was a TouchWiz Rom, but I can't remember which) and the external SD card starts acting up. It would randomly gets dismounted, with error messages that either says 'SD card damaged', 'SD card removed', or 'SD card error' (one of those three will pop up randomly). At the time, it returned to normal when I flashed it back to Paranoid. Now, it is happening again. Now I am sure that the problem is not with the card itself since at other times it works just fine. Could this also be another hardware error? I don't think it's a ROM issue since I have tried Paranoid, PAC-ROM, CM, and AOKP, all with the same result.
To rub it in my wounds, both of those problems doesn't happen when the phone is charged, which happens at night or at work, which is the time I'm not reaching my phone to plug in the earphones and blast some music, which is stored on the external SD.
Maybe someone have the same experience, or have some insights to these problems?
We have a saying around here:

I was thinking about that also, but I've been hold off by my own dislike for TouchWiz. Meh...
Anyways, thanks, might try that in a couple of days
Use stock to see if the issue perists.
If it's still there, we could be talking hardware.
if it's not, it's software.
Sent from the little guy
After using stock (XWLSS) for two days, I guess the problem really is software. Phone doesn't overheat anymore, and SD card only undetected some 2 minutes after unplugging the USB/charger. Still strange, but it works. Thanks again gastonw for the advice
Np.
You can try chameleon ROM if you like, no touchwiz there.
