Over the past month and a half that I have had an atrix I have noticed that my atrix has burnt me several times. I have it in my pocket and it just gets really hot. It doesnt seem to be the battery as the entire phone is very hot. This has been happening even before I rooted my phone. It burns me through the otter box. Im reluctant to take this back to at&t as i would have to unroot it. Are other people having this issue?
Never once had that problem

I have that problem too. It's not a problem with your phone. It just gets warm naturally. The otterbox definitely doesn't help cool it off though. I have the defender, and God forbid I accidentally leave it under my pillow while charging. I'll wake up in the morning with an uncharged, flaming Atrix.
If it's really burning you, like so much you can't touch it, then something is wrong, regardless of case.
Sounds like a future class action lawsuit and recall for AT&T... except mine, you can't have it *hisss*
I swear I just seen this post in a image forum, with exact wording...hmmmm. Otterboxes are terrible at disappating heat. You also may have a process putting load on the processor causing it to run hot.
So, do you think it would be wise to get rid of the otter box? Should I call or email the otter company?

Thats what I thought maybe there is a runaway app causing the heat. My Atrix stays in the Commuter and rarely gets hot, if it does its not for long or Im outside in the sun. Try an app like Watchdog to monitor for misbehaving apps..
Thanks wiredpirate. That is one great app. Im thinking that will at least help me narrow down the problem. Im sure this is the reason that my atrix is consuming an excessive amount of batter power too. thanks again.
No problem let us know if you find out what app was causing you to overheat.
Ok, so it seems like there is not an app in particular in fault. I am currently using a root app called 'CPU master'. This seems to at leas greatly decrease my problems.
Yeah, it definitely gets warm, but I have never had it that hot. The only time it gets warm on me is if I am backing up in cwm or flashing with rsd.
OP How hot are we talking? (like Temp-wise?)
Also anyone use Battery Booster and leave the Temp Icon on at the top so actually gauge how hot your phone is getting?
My Milestone and Telus Fascinate definitely hit the +40c a lot more than my Atrix.
The Fascinate will always hit above 40c when browsing on whites, because of the S Amoled screen. Plenty of times I average 40-45c.
The Atrix in idle is usually in the mid 20's, and browsing in the mid 30s for me...
I have also had this problem from day one. I had it charging under my pillow overnight and woke up with it really hot. I did this with my iPhone before I moved over to the Atrix and never once had an overheating iPhone...not that I'd go back to it.
That would be the dual core lava reactor conflicting with the flux capacitor. Gingerbread should fix it

I've been noticing a good amount of heat up by the camera during moderate use. I thought this was a CM7 problem since I had been on it since day 1, but I am now on UnNamed and the problem persists. After some googling it does seem that many other people are having this problem. Not on WIFI, and not in a poor signal area either. Just wanted to see if anyone had any leads as to the cause. What is a good app for monitoring CPU usage by app?
Yes, it may get a little hot but it isn't something to worry about as far as I know. I've gamed for three hours straight and not had any problems except for a low battery life!
yeah mine gets hot near the camera during use but i dont think its a problem
I use a battery monitor.
From what I've read, it will shut off for protection. I've heard that as long as it doesn't ever get too much above 130 F, you should be OK.
Now if it constantly stays high, there may be a problem. Mine stays around 80 F most of the time and the highest I've ever seen is 99 F but i don't game much or use my camera. One thing you don't wanna do is charge it while hd gaming or charge it in a hot car. My infuse reached 146 F one time doing that.

I only notice my battery gets hot when im charging while playing a game or sometimes watching a movie

Somehow 'Words with Friends' caused my phone to really warm up a lot. More so than I've seen with any other situation and on numerous occasions. Luckily I suck at that game and uninstalled it...
Mine is cool unless i put a thick case then itll burn up

When I first got CM7 running on this thing, I tore through the market installing the apps I'm used to. When I was finished, I noticed that it was indeed a bit warm in the area you described. It wasn't hot enough to cause discomfort, just warm enough to note.
I notice when my phone gets hot in that area when it is around 30% remaining and I charge it. I also notice that when it is charging, it really isn't charging but battery is draining. When I got home and charged it at 30%, I left it sitting there for about 30 minutes and when I checked the phone again, it was at 25%. GPS and wifi was turned off. I decided to power down the phone and remove the battery for 5 minutes. I started working fine after that. I noticed it getting hot again today when I plugged it in to charge at 40% but this time it actually was charging. I am running stock rom but rooted. Should this be a concern?
Seems as though a lot of people are having a variation of this problem. Hopefully it is addressed soon.
The CPU will always get a bit warm if it's running.
If it's getting very hot when the screen is off, you've probably got some background task wakelocking the phone.
My phone's screen gets pretty hot when I run web videos/flash videos on HSPA.
Runs a tiny bit warm when i'm running pristine 3D Tegra games on it...otherwise no.
left my phone turned on unattended in the car glove compartment for almost half a day in the afternoon. It was under direct sunlight, and when i finally took out the phone, the casing of the phone was very hot. Anyone can tell me if it would adversely affect the phone in anyway such as battery life or internet connection? cause i feel that the internet loads much slower compared to last time and i wonder if its a psychological issue. any help or answers is greatly appreciated

Your phone is fine, don't worry. These phones are able to withstand high temperatures. It's designed to shut down if it overheats to prevent damage anyway.

Hi guys,
I've bought a SGS3 and i am facing some temperature issues and i want to know if it is normal. At a normal usage (for example while im writing this thread) the battery temp is at 45 degrees Celcius at the bottom of the device - sim card / micro SD zone. Is it normal?!?! it is burning my hands!!! i had a htv desire and a SGS2 and it never happened to me...and no, im not playing any game.
What should i do?
Cheers mates!
Not normal return it.

Sounds familiar:

I'd return it asap.
My first galaxy s3 would reach temps above 49c. I was able to exchange it without issue from expansys. But yes that's not normal.

Depends allot on ambient air temp and what the task the device is performing.
Say, OAT is 35-40 and surfing away with 3g will put the battery temp well into the mid-high 40s. Also performing high CPU tasks and charging at same time will do this.
If this is not the case for you, then it is not normal temp just sitting there in a controlled environment surfing the net.....
But before doing anything, check that there is not done rogue app eating away at the CPU. Maybe also factory reset and check before installing any 3rd party apps.

I think I found the cause...i was surfing the web using weak 3G signal. If i use WIFI, the phone will stay at 30/35ºC. But its normal that with 3G network, the temps reach 45ºC??
Thanks for the help!
Hi,
I've got same trouble, over 3g the bottom is over heat,
but in wifi mode, not heat too much.
Is there a way, maybe a radio upgrade ??
The baseband processor and radio amplifier work at maximum capacity to make your phone reach the antenna when you got a very weak signal, so it's normal that the phone heats up.
If it gets really uncomfortable to hold you should return it, since it might have a hardware fault (not very likely but still always possible)
When you picture that a small (roughly 4cm!) antenna has to emit enough power to be heard up to ~1.5km IN ANY DIRECTION away with the signal not being sent in a straight line but rather reflecting off several objects, it's awesome what modern technology is capable of.
I'm asking myself the same question, i'm afraid to return it without a reason. Can someone, with a Custom ROM, test a simple 3 min web browsing in weak 3g connection and report the temp of the battery?
Thanks in advance!
i got 46 degrees celcius while browsing on 3g..idk what`s the problem
The problem? i don't know if this is a problem, that's the reason because i wrote this thread I had a Desire and a SGS2 and i haven't felt this kind of heating in nether of them.
Have the same problem here man
Look at the attached picture.

~45c will not burn your hamd, it may make your hands sweat but other than that you should be fine.

Are you in a weak signal zone?
No i have full signal. It's crazy. The service center guy replaced my battery but the problem is still persistent. Please help.

What were you doing with the phone when it reached that temp?
Using whatsapp.
And downloading swiftkey from the play store.
Just a little multitasking screws this thing up.
As i said, it's crazy.
And also, no other tasks were running in the background FYI.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Your signal being "full" doesn't indicate the signal strength of the area you are in. As signal becomes harder and harder to reach, the antenna will use more and more power to try and improve it. This means your bars may look good, and your phone will get hot, but you're in an area that signal is not very good.
It is not a defect or a problem for the temperature range it reaches. If you are concerned about burning yourself you can get a case to prevent that, but the temps that it reaches will not burn you.
If you are indoors and actively using your phone try to switch to wifi so you get better battery life. Using 3g inside can use a lot more power and generate a lot more heat.
mainly its the battery
look at this thread

i had high temp problem the same as u
once i changed my battery It's all good
My screen get hot my max temp is 40 is that on?

Hi all. Long-time lurker, first-time caller.
I'm digging this phone, but I've noticed that it gets uncomfortably warm (screen and back) during most any usage. It's fine on standby. I'll notice it after less than a minute of web-browsing, when streaming from subsonic, during calls sometimes, almost anytime its on. Is that normal? I'm coming from an iphone 4, and the last android I had was as the original Incredible. Is this just how new high performance phones run? FYI: I've got a TPU case that eliminates the problem, but I prefer going naked.
It's unlocked and rooted, running nova launcher. Happens regardless whether I'm using data/wifi 3g/4g.
EDIT: I should note that it's not "hot" exactly. Warm enough to make your palms feel like they need to breathe after 30 seconds or so though.
I don't have mine yet, but I've read here that using launchers other than Sense can cause performance issues. Perhaps the phone is pulling double duty trying to run Nova while still having elements of Sense going too.
You could troubleshoot this pretty easily. Try using just stock Sense, and see if you still have the temp issue.
I ran go launcher ex for a little bit and I noticed the same.. Not saying it was for sure the cause... But I did notice the phone getting hot more often

I've only noticed it getting hot if I'm playing games. Otherwise it runs pretty cool.

I am running Nova and have absolutely no issues with the phone getting warm. A warm temperature means the battery is being discharged at a high clip. A launcher, unless absolutely borked, should not cause this on a regular basis.

as a stock phone mine has only gotten warm during game play. after i unlocked and rooted i tried factory rom which had apex launcher and had the same issue along with all broken google apps but i switched to ukb and all issues disappeared also i noticed all three custom kernels out at the moment keep my phone abnormally hot so it just depends i suppose
