Boots to Woman on Video then shuts down - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

My NT used to work beautifully. It was rooted and was a great device. Then it started to randomly shutdown.
Now, after factory resets and just about everything else imaginable, it boots normally, gets to the woman on the video screen, then just shuts off. If I hold the power button only, it stays on but only for a few seconds as the power button, oddly enough keeping it on, shuts it down.
Also, the only way it turns on is to connect to PC via USB. Power button will not turn it on unless connected.
Any one have ANY ideas what could be the issue?
Thanks a ton!
HW

Try Formating your external sdcard if any, make a wipe data factory reset. Leave it on CWM then Put it to charge full with original charger and USB cable. Leave it for 3-4 hours. After that unplug from power, reboot device in CWM and report back

Thanks. The problem is, when I boot to CWM, it flickers and will only stabilize by holding the power button in. I've tried several cards with fresh CWM and it always flickers and is nearly impossible to make a selection.

It's a 16GB model purchased 12/25/11. I've tried everything and have no idea what it could be. The CWM issue is really odd too. It's just a very fast flicker that won't let me select anything unless the power button is held down which then defeats the purpose since it'll shut down.
Also, if I ever am able to get it to do a data wipe through the flickering, I get a message as it goes through that states, "E:format_volume: make_ext4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk1p2"
Then it says "Data wipe complete" while still flickering and continues to do the same on any restart

Ok, tell me if at list when you boot into CWM (internal or sdcard) your device remains on and doesn't shutdown after few minutes. This is important in order to perform unbrick methods. Also let me know what unbrick method(s) have you tried so far, if any.

When I boot into CWM it will remain on the CWM screen flickering forever until I shut it down.
I have tried everything on the forum to unbrick, including the ubuntu method several time. The only one I haven't been able to try is the internal partition restore since the files don't exist any longer to try that method.
Hope this info leads to something. Thank you for your help. I've spent endless hours on this and am now just trying to get it working again to donate it to a charity in a working condition. I have a new Nexus 7 which blows this away regardless but would like to donate a functioning tablet to a kid who would really appreciate it.

OK i think the unbrick method you're referring is @soshite's thread? that is the one i was going to suggest you, so what you need to follow that tutorial is meghd00t's cwm recovery sdcard which you can find here (it already have the gdisk and sgdisk built in), the scripts.zip (not sure if those scripts are built in the cwm sdcard aswell) and the 16gb partition images.
All the tools mentioned above and more can be found in my FTP Nook Tablet folder so i recommend you to bookmark it.

No luck. The instructions make no sense. How can I get "to a terminal" when the NT turns off so quickly.
I'm afraid this it fried.
Frustrating since it boots to the stock woman in the video and just quits.
Maybe someone else wants to take a shot.
Make me an offer for this POS. My goal was to donate it to a children's charity here but it's useless in this state its in. Anyone want it?
Let me know. I have no more time to mess around with something that's about a year behind the latest technology now.
Thanks for all your help everyone but it's time to let this go.

[SOLVED][with help of ddotpatel] Something BAD happened with Nandroid Restore - HELP!

Hey,
I have a huge problem, people.
I've had some issues with one of the ROMs that I tested, so decided to restore my Nandroid Backup. I've wiped everything and runned the Nandroid Restore of my previous - working ROM (EzHero 1.2.1) - everything looked as if it worked fine, the operation was completed succesfully. So, given that I've chosen reboot phone option in the Recovery (AmonRa 1.6.2) and it turned on with a regular booting screen and just stuck on it. It's been like 2hrs and I'm constantly stuck on this "loading" screen and cannot turn the mobile off either by holding Power or Power Home or Power Home Back. Nothing. I don't wanna take the battery out as I heard that it can be devastating.
So, to clarify all of that, I have a phone connected via cable (yet no connection through ADB) to PC, so the battery would not discharge and the phone itself is stuck on booting logo/animation, the one just before it goes into the usual desktop screen.
How can I go about it to restore it?
Thanks!
Do you have App2SD ?? If yes it may took ages to boot when you do a first boot... But that only works if you had done a Nandroid + Ext...
Its fine to take your battery out,... Reset and give it another try at booting. If it fails again, try booting without SD in. If it fails again, try doing another restore of your nandroid. Fail again,... Full wipe then reflash ROM.
There is only risk of bricking when flashing a new radio and interrupting the process.

I do have apps2sd but haven't done +Ext.
When I soft-reseted the device it obviously went into boot loop again BUT I have managed to connect it to my PC through ADB now and wonder if I could use it to my advantage?

The problem is my phone IS stuck at boot loop and even if I soft reset it I don't have enough time to press POWER and HOME to go into Recovery so I cannot check if I could do restore. Would connection through ADB help as I currently after soft reset have it?
I have to clear something up my phone is in the boot loop but not as in that it reboots itself time after time - NO! It just sticks on the booting animation and that's it.
Oh, and running this "fastboot boot recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img" through ADB just sits stuck at "< waiting for the device >" though I _can_ list the contents of my Hero through shell.
Also when I press vol up or vol down in the state with startup screen beeing stuck I can hear it same way as if I heard it in the working phone - as in beeping when pressing up and beeping lower when down.
I'm not so clued up on fastboot commands to be honest.
Take your battery out,... Hold HOME and put your battery back in..... KEEPING HOME HELD IN
OK! Finally after finding enough courage to do so I pulled the battery out as ddotpatel advised me to - I have to say it was scary 30s, real scary. Anyway, it seemed that his advice was correct and he is in fact a very wise man - THANK YOU! Afterwards I've done all the wipes again as I did initially and instead of trying to recover it from my Nandroid backup I just gave up and reflashed it again. It didn't work, so I reformated and repartitioned the SD card and it's all good now... And I'm a happy puppy! Actually, I'm no puppy at all but I am happy nonetheless.
@ddotpatel Thank you sir! You are a Gentleman and a Scholar and I shall praise your name forever on this and other Android forums alike. ^__^ Just a quick question though: removing a battery is prohibited only when flashing radio and when the phone's on the "phone & a box/arrow" picture, right? So if I ever have an booting/issue error whilst flashing custom ROMs that do nothing to the radio I should be fine poping the battery?
I know I sad it trice already but - ddotpatel, sir, THANK YOU!

sgs2 over night dead?

hey,
prehisory:
last night, my phone were somewhere in my bed, cus i fell asleep. the wohle night i'm charging my phone always.
(happened a few times, but i think this time i slept over my phone)
next morning i woke up, picked up the phone & wanted to use it, but it got a freeze screen, was medium-temperatured (not more than a little gaming).
didn't thought anything bad, i pulled out my micro usb charger and forced a restart by contiounsly press power.
problem now:
it booted up as normal but it took really longer than usual. it seemed to freeze sometimes during boot, sometimes i canceled booting, and tried another time..
really really strange behaviors happened, but after a long time just let the phone boot, i got dropped to my homescreeen. all was looking good except the whole status bar just wasn't there. damn.. but ok, tried another 1-2 boots, to see if it get stable after a while but that doens't changed anything..
i can't eitgher get into CWM, just into download mode.
ideas?
i thought overheated but i guess that my phone either would'nt boot up (cpu burned) or stays at black screen (gpu burned)?
so i tried getting into CWM which doesn't worked. then i flashed official samsung ics via odin -> boots up till the coulorized "S" appears, stays in this state, and keep bootlooping (see this when the animation starts by this kind of flowers again)
tried another older stock rom, the same. stock kernel, the same, cf-root with CWM4, the same, i cant even then get in CWM..
any idea??
i'm goin crazy on this.. too much money wasted if this wont work -.-

Which part of "i can't eitgher get into CWM, just into download mode. " did you not understand?
OP:
Just flash a ICS rom for now and later you can try to see if it works or not. (CWM)
Have a good day.
Can you get stock recovery?
From Odin flash cwm, not the CFRoot one. than try it, strange you can get download mode but not recovery.
You have to wipe to get rid of boot loop

jje
so, finally i got it back,
did this howto: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457458
so now i'm back on stock ICS samsungs rom.
flashed the suitable CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LPH-v5.2-CWM5.tar
but now i can't access the CWM menue, by pressing power, vol up, home
?
When you say you can't access recovery, what's happening?
PROBLEM SOLVED
YOU FORGOT TO USE THE HOME KEY
1. Put 1 finger on home
2. Put 1 finger on volume up
3. Put 1 finger on top of power
4. Press them all together, and as soon as you see the anything on the screen, let go of everything

i did, it doesnt accessed cwm. never mind tryin around solved it.
now all fresh installed off samsungs official, but it isnt as good as before:
still slow bootup, and my status-bar is missing after booting (using latest miui which i also had before this problem, so formerly it was working)
after bootup, touch keys and all other won't response, so if bootup to lockscreen -> wait til screen goes off -> u cant wake the phone, or u have to wait a while maybe it light up for some reason.
any ideas?
hardware damage? i hope not..
no i think you need a good wipeing. but you need to find a way to get into download mode, dont give up try it 3 more time's, dont keep pressing the after the buttons logo apears
try this or its hardware............ you do any deviation and you are on your own.
remove your external sdcard and dont put it back until you are sure your phone works
as per your above post you can access cwm
1: format data / cache / system / sdcard or emmc [system is a must]
2: format preboot / boot [cwm 5.5 or some alternat if option available]
3: download stock i9100 ROM from checkfus (prefer) or sammobile
4: flash using odin, after first boot dial *2767*3855#
5: do not sign in, use for half hour or so, if you think it works sign in to google.
6: do not restore any thing, no titanium backups/restores
7: do not put your sdcard
if your phone works now you know its not hardware now do whatever
thanks mate you strength my opinion and hope that it isn't hardware.
i already had an stock ICS samsung rom on it, with sd mounted all worked fluently and well. (LPH rom). so i flashed a suitable CF-root with CWM, get in there, flashed custom ROM (latest miui + siyah kernel, the same combination i used for month and it worked).
so but what causes these problems i have? before it was fast booting and stable, now slow and the status bar is missing, the rom wont boot up in a normal way, i have to "bully" my phone while boot that i can see the desktop..
?
And your problem suddenly changed!
Custom ROM issues, download again, download something else, wipe, flash again.

One and only one thing comes to mind. You must continue to charge when you boot this even if your battery is 100%. Use power cord to turn on NT and keep it powered for the entire time. It (ubuntu) freaks without power and shuts down!
I hope this is your problem if not please tell more including which NT 8 or 16 gig, etc.

i do not have the experience to help with a corrupt partition. ( if it is a corrupt one ) . i have not had to fix / repair a corruption on my unit . . i was lucky that the adam outler restore ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1470910 ) fixed mine and it went back to a factory boot-up . . my thought is that your NT is not corrupted because the boot is working . . the boot just fails to load the next piece . . ( i took some time and read over the 'partition repair' posts and they scared the hell out of me ! . http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1605664&highlight=damaged+partition+table ) my advice is to not re-format. do not re-partition. the senior people see the new people dive into un-necessary ( wrong ) steps way too early / often. . the senior people say they see 'relatively easy' fixes turned into a mess. . http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1635116
.
if the steps seem too much or are going nowhere... . do you have a large B&N store in your area ?

from notes – safe nt recovery with cm7 sdcard:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826
make cm7 sdcard boot and setup.
install http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458630
Nook Recovery Flasher.apk
Run Nook Tab Recovery Flasher and select Install Stock Recovery, exit program.
Power off. Remove sdcard.
Press power and n key and hold 2 seconds after screen is lit. Release power.
After 1 second longer release n and you should get data reset. Press n key twice to accept.
If lucky your trouble will be cleared if not then hard reset.
Power off. Remove sdcard if installed. Hold power and n till screen lit and continue to hold till screen goes black. Do this eight times. Ninth time use power as normal and when you see recovery press n key twice to accept full factory reset.
Good Luck!

If you can get back into recovery mode, try reflashing the rom or flashing another rom. I've had cases where a rom just wouldn't work for me (I too, have the AT&T Note). Never had the patience to try to figure out why. I usually try to flash several times (making sure I do a factory wipe) but if it still didn't work, I would just flash another rom.
If you can't get into recovery mode, then you may need to flash a stock rom via ODIN (in download mode) and then start all over from scratch (root the phone, install CMW or TWRP,flash custom rom, etc.). Please search the forums for a stock rom and all the files / instructions on flashing via ODIN if you aren't already familiar with it.
Since your PC recognizes the phone to some degree (it at least recognizes that the phone was connected and interacts with the sd card), it sounds like you have a soft brick which is fixable via one of the methods above. If your phone was hard bricked, then the PC more than likely wouldn't recognize it at all, it would do absolutely nothing and you would basically have a paper weight. It doesn't sound like you have a hard brick.
If anyone else has more insight, please chime in. I'm definitely no expert here.
it wont even light up to samsung logo or even vibrate also the sd is recognised but it randomly connects and disconnects odin does not see phone

Bootloop, Not rooted

So my phone started restarting randomly. It will only show the Samsung logo turn off and do the same thing again. Its not rooted and I am pretty sure that its not from something I installed recently (Everything was from the play store and no immediate problems after any of them). When I did the hold volume up,down and power it would only keep on restarting still. But when I just hold volume down it comes to something else that asks if I want to install a new rom. So I was wondering what I should do. Install a new ROM and then revert back ? or will that not work? Also I have a extra I717 with a broken screen I could swap the insides and see if that would help. Also I don't know much about rooting and stuffs. Lemme know what I should do guys! :highfive:

Its not rooted and I am pretty sure that its not from something I installed recently (Everything was from the play store and no immediate problems after any of them). When I did the hold volume up,down and power it would only keep on restarting still. But when I just hold volume down it comes to something else that asks if I want to install a new rom. So I was wondering what I should do. Install a new ROM and then revert back ? or will that not work? Also I have a extra I717 with a broken screen I could swap the insides and see if that would help. Also I don't know much about rooting and stuffs. Lemme know what I should do guys! :highfive:

Take out the battery. Insert the battery without touching anything else. Does it just power on itself or does it stay off? If it does turn on, you might have a stuck power button. Let us know what happens
did that too :/
I did that too. It would turn off and on again but only show the Samsung logo then restart again. Also I have the case removed so It cant be the power button being stuck and I have tried the battery thing still nothing.
Whatcha mean? It would turn on by itself once the battery is inserted or you would have to press the power button. Once the battery is out and then inserted back in, it is not supposed to be powered on by itstelf. If it does turn on by itself, then the power button is most likely pressed in.

I have a I717 doing the same thing. (Eg. device boots and seems to function for a about 2 minutes locks up and reboots. )
As the device was stock when it started having this issue I figured it might be an OS issue Factory reset to it would leave the device booting to optimize applications then reboot. Checked power button checked it was clean.
Also staied on when in recovery without issue.
As I figured this was an OS issue I installed CWM
Downloaded and installed SlimBeam
Device booted and completed instlation and operated for about 2 minutes and rebooted.
Device will does not have any issues with in CWM or Odin. I
I read alsowhere that the internal SD-Card filesystem might have become corrupted and need to be reformated however I have yet to find instruction or confirmantion.
Anyone have some ideas?
.
to Tal Star.
1. When you were in CWM and were about to flash, did you wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache then do the flash? Or just flash?
2. So either os it would do the same? Stay on for about two minutes, then reboot? Would it reboot back into the os and do the same?

So right now you can boot up into the os and it will turn off in 2 minutes? or just given enough time? Will it boot into the os each time? I dont think ill have an answer for it, but i bet someone that does will want to know the same things to possibly narrow it down

Naw it starts optimzing the Applications and lasts a few minutes reboots locks up and starts again. SlimBean completes the process and makes it all the way to the launcher but after a same amount of time it reboots. back to the launcher. (Slim bean has a resonable number less Apps and that's why it completes or is my best guess)

I really wouldnt know about that. Hopefully someone will come by and help you out. I wonder being on the latest recovery would help if youre not already and then doing it all over? Hopefully someone more experienced will chime in.
Could be a corrupt download.
Again, I always flash rom 2 times. You can get different reactions from 2 seperate flashes. 2 time seems to get a more solid installation.
Wait your 10 and reboot.
Still think its a power button issue. It can act normal but still be the problem. Hows you battery?

HAAAAA I hope some one finds this trouble... having the same issue Here... Does your phone starts up correctly when sim card removed? Mine does when sim card removed and pluged into coputer or wall plug.... Did the same steps you did with no effect either... could it be a power management problem ??? :silly: This is getting me nuts...

I dobut it's a download. I use CWM to flash from an external SD card. However I did try reflashing like you suggest with no change. The battery is fine as far as I can tell, like I said it will stay online in recovery on battery for what seems like forever.

Nope I am working on the one I have with the SIM Card out & SD card out.
happens
So what I done so far is taken out the sim and sd card. Took out the battery put it back in and when I power to turn it on It vibrates (like it normaly would when it starts) then shows Samsung logo turns off and loops. I tried doing the hold volume up down power thing and it does not work. But what does work is when I hold volume down it takes me to a custom OS thing. I don't know what that is but I cant get there. So maybe put a custom OS in and then revert it back?
So I used Odin and put 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Official Firmware but its still doing what it was doing before.Used 3.07 and it said it passed fine. Should I try a different rom or something else? Also the first time it starts up after installing the rom it goes past the logo to the ATT ball animation logo freeze there and turns of then when I turn it on from there it will loop at the samsung logo again.
You can try the firmware upgrade and initialization feature in kies. It will return your device to the original factory firmware, software, and settings. If it still loops after that you have hardware issues.
Ok so I guess im making progress now. After I put the stock rom (Different one from befor) It DIDNT BOOT LOOP well it did but only looped 3 times then stoped. Also there are 2 Samsung logos. the frist one was just normal logo ( same one I was having befor ) then the screen turns off and shows the same logo but this time its a little bigger its white with a blue glow! ( Made it further this time but still crashes afterwards) BUT now I can actualy get into the Manual mode. I did a wipe data/factory reset in that mode which didnt help i wiped the cache too. Still didnt help.
Now in manual mode my computer does recognize that something is connected to it now but it tries to configure it and keeps on failing. And so samsun kies cant connect to it either.
But from where I started at its a improvement
My Note is doing the same thing too now, but I know the reason why. I was trying to install clockworkmodrecovery so I would be able to upgrade to jellybean and I think I flashed a kernel that was meant for rooted phones (pretty dumb of me I guess). So now the phone is stuck and I'm going to try to install the original jellybean 4.1.2 for rogers and hopefully that will fix it.
As long as you can get into Odin download mode, your phone can be fixed.
