Could someone please explain the best way to prep a memory card for the S3?
Do I need to format it (in a certain way, FAT32 or otherwise), create dedicated folders for the kind of contents or just dump everything in there?
Does the phone create the folders?
I have read conflicting info about whether the S3 supports 64GB cards. Someone please confirm.
On stock the phone will support 64gb cards formatted with fat32 or exfat, SOME custom kernels support both but some only support fat32, for now.
As far as folders go the phone creates the ones it needs.
Basically just stick it in and go from there, its a pretty pain free process!
You'll manage fine.
As far as I know they are already formatted as fat32.

Thank you for your help.
Does the phone create the folders as soon I insert the card the first time?
Sorry didn't buy one yet, hence all the questions, I would otherwise just stick it in and see what happens.

There are several graphical SD card graphical analysis apps... did you bother to take the time to use any of them or even search for them?

This is the general section, not development. No need to answer like that. It's a legitimate question. It would have been easier to point him to the apps you mentioned. Not everyone knows about those. It's a perfect opportunity to teach someone without putting them down.

Its a perfect opportunity for the user to try to do some researchnon his/her own on something so minor. If he/her didn't bother on something so easy can you imagine how they willing want to be spoonfed in the future...?

On my TP, in the SD Card storage settings it's color coded. I have 16G's free out of the 25G. What takes up the most space is purple which is songs, pics, and videos.

Hi folks,
Based any some other threads on this forum, I've been reading about swapping the original 2GB internal card for a new 32GB card, and the one principal question I have is, does the new card have to be formatted first on a PC, or does one just plug it in 'raw' so to speak?
Thanks in advance.
you dont go straight for 32gb card without knowing anything... have more read first... take your time understanding.. no need to rush anything...

Thanks for cautioning me, can you recommend a few links somewhere that can educate me better, in the successes and pitfalls I should know about.

This is a real dealbraker for me that my 32GB microSD card would not be recognized in CyanogenMOD because of the filesystem format i used.
I really like CM and i hope they will find a way to port the drivers, because i miss the clean experience of stock Android.
If anybody knows a way to store 5GB+ (without splitting or converting, because i use it for storing .iso files with 5GB+ size...) movies on the microSD card and be supported in CM, please let me know.
Ohh god, did you just ask for an eta?

READ post one and then ask in the CM discussion forum .

Nope, i just want to know if there is plans for that in the near future, because im getting a little sick from all that TouchWiz but the Camera and Storage experience are the best on Sammy's software
So, let me get this straight. You actually say it's the Cyanogenmod's fault that the exFAT binaries aren't open source? exFAT is a proprietary file system belonging to Microsoft, and it is far from open source.
How does that make it CM's fault?

Um, let me get you straight. I didn't accuse CM for anything, I am just asking if there is planned support for that filesystem or other that support 5GB+ files.
If you don't have suggestions, please leave.
let me remind you that you are breaking the rules by posting in the wrong section.
the answer is no

Planned support? How about no.
Planned support for a proprietary filesystem, which we're not even allowed to use, and the fact that CM only uses source material, won't happen. Ever.
Is it possible to increase ram, by swap or whatsoever
And please do not reply negatively. It is just a question

Using swap is the only way I've heard, I think after too much use it can burn out your sd card. I read that somewhere. Dunno if its true.

I also read that but i think that there should be a way without burning the sd.

swap decreases the life of sd card...
but
here is my question,
how long you are gonna use your sd card ??
better the class, longer the life..
a class 8 sd card may have 7-8 years life...
swap will increase the r/w cyles and hence life decreases.. (may be by 1-2 years)
it's not like that you are gonna use your sd card for 5 damn years

Man if it keeps on working for even one year, i will be damn happy XD. But please tell me the final ans. Should i do this? Plz help me out.

If you really need this - you should calculate how much memory you need for your apps... you can try even with programs that making swap image on sd card. If you will see no difference than you may just delete this program. Other way to increase ram place is just to kill / uninstall apps thats are not needed and taking part of memory like autoupdates and synch.
This is the reason why i like bareboned roms.
Everything I download gets sent to internal memory instead of my sdcard. How can I direct everything I download to my sdcard ? I'm on a cm based ROM btw

How big is your sd card and how is it formatted? I had a similar problem when upgrading to a 64gb sdcard. Windows by default formatted it as exFAT. I believe that for the gnote/Linux to see a card it has to be formatted to FAT32. Windows (8-7) wouldn't do it but I found a free utility put out by the sdcard manufacturers association let me format it to FAT32. You Should be able Google it. The only downside is that it won't permit a file size larger than 4gb.

Actually, I sort of know how to answer it, but I've been consumed with a headache of my own :crying:. I've found I'm able to control the download location if I use Dolphin Browser to download. When the download starts, it usually gives me an option to confirm the default download location. It is easy then to browse to a different download location. I use it mostly when I'm trying out various ROMS and need to keep them straight.
