Ok first I have to say that I haven't tried to unlock my bootloader and have no idea on how to check if they put a magical dev bootloader on it. With considering statistical odds and the Univerise as I whole I'm going to guess they just updated my phone.
The problem with the phone is that one side of the screen appeared to start lifting up and at that time it started to have a problem taking touch input. Pressing on that corner would temporarily fix it but finally I decided to send it into repair a couple weeks ago. I had never unlocked the phone so to prep it I wiped and flashed 198_7 to send it back to stock and set it in. Today I got it back with 254_13 and to say the least I was frackin pissed off. So I got on chat and expressed my feelings. The following is the log, all names have be changed, most responses from the rep took about 10 minutes to get.
SupportRep: Hi, my name is SupportRep. How may I help you?
MinceMan: I sent my photon in for repair and it was sent back to me with something else broken
SupportRep: I do apologize for that inconvenience. I will do my best to help you with that today.
SupportRep: What part of the phone that was broken?
MinceMan: You've put a non-unlockable bootloader on the phone.
MinceMan: I would like the information to roll back my photon, which I own and bought with my own money, to the previous bootloader.
MinceMan: An sbf that I can flash through RSD would be best.
SupportRep: I do apologize but if you will going to root your device, that will automatically void the warranty of your phone.
MinceMan: I
MinceMan: I'm fine with that now that it's repaired and my warranty is over in a month.
MinceMan: I just want the ability to put different firmware on it. An ability that I had until I set in my photon for repair because of a factory defect.
SupportRep: If that is the case, we recommend you to send in the phone for re-evaluation and possible repair.
SupportRep: You can put a note that the phone was not totally repaired.
MinceMan: I don't like sending it in for something that a technician/you can help me fix on my own, I've already been without my phone for a week. that's not only $5 in shipping and handling already but $25 that I'm paying on contact without my phone. Now your asking me to part with it for another week or two. How am I going to be reimbursed for this?
MinceMan: It's an easy fix. All I need is the sbf.
SupportRep: If that would be the case, I am going to escalate your case to our Repair escalation team department for further assistance.
MinceMan: Thank you.
SupportRep: Please provide me your contact number MinceMan.
MinceMan: 5555555555
SupportRep: Thank you.
SupportRep: Our repair escalation team will going to contact you within the next 24 - 48 hours. Please keep your line open so they can contact you easily. No worries, they will going to take care of your concern to get it resolved.
MinceMan: I maybe busy when they call. Will they give me a call back number or try multiple times?
SupportRep: What is the most convenient time that we can contact you MinceMan?
MinceMan: 10am-11pm and 2-10pm for tomorrow. After tomorrow anytime works.
SupportRep: Okay. Noted.
SupportRep: Please keep your line open. No worries, we will take care of your concern MinceMan.
SupportRep: Would there be anything else that I can assist you with aside from this?
MinceMan: No, thank you.

I highly doubt this will go anywhere but I have to try. To be honest if they don't fix this for me I won't buy moto again cause they just push me over the edge, but I should have seen it coming. I'll be updating with my expedition into this territory. If anyone has any phone numbers or emails that I could contact that could help I will do it. I'm trying to raise hell here and the worst that will happen is I get tagged by a company that I'll never buy from again.
Interesting! And funny! Kinda curious how this will turn out although I think I already know. Lol

I'd love to see how this plays out. Be persistant and cool. You never know, they might end up giving us the key to unlocking the 2.35 bootloader.

So Motorola has not called me back, not a huge surprise! I haven't been able to pull myself away from the Olympics this week and I'm going on a trip this weekend. When I get back early next week I'll get back to hounding them. I swear I'm not going to drop this!

wait, so you void your warrenty then expect them to fix your issue? i dont think you know how warrentys work.
i had this chevy cavalier, brand new, i put in a Z24 engine in it( tho is was a standard 4c engine to start) then when i tried to get them to fix the issue's they told me i violated my warrenty and it was no longer covered... thats just how it works. you cant do that and expect to get them to accept responsability for something... -_-

Try Sprint... This is what I came up with
Russel: Thanks for moving the chat window.
Russel: Thank you for contacting Sprint. While I access your account information, can you please provide more details about why you're chatting with us today?
Customer: I recently took my photon in as it was unable to boot. today I received my replacement, but it now has an non unlockable bootloader.. I am a developer and need to be able to have it unlocked for development and testing
Customer: I am extremely dissatisfied about this major inconvenience as development is my primary means of income
Customer: so without being able to develop on this phone, I am stuck with no way to work
Russel: Thank you for sharing additional details. Please give me a moment while I research that for you.
Customer: alright
Customer: the Photon ships with 2.3.4 firmware, and an update was made by an employee to 2.3.5 which restricts the bootloader
Russel: I'm still researching the information for you. Thanks for your patience.
Customer: not a problem
Russel: Thanks.
Russel: Please switch off your phone.
Customer: ok
Customer: its off
Russel: Thanks.
Russel: I have refreshed the phone.
Russel: Please turn it on and try to use it.
Customer: it still has the 2.3.5
Customer: I was in chat with motorola about this, and they said that the only thing to do would be to exchange it for one with 2.3.4, but i would have to do it thru sprint
Russel: I understand that. I would suggest you to visit our Sprint repair center with your phone. We will fix this issue or will replace the phone for you.
Customer: I just got the replacement thru there
Customer: and the software was updated to 2.3.5
Customer: hindrances like this are making me consider switching to a carrier that is not so restrictive on their phones, this is ridiculous
Russel K: I want to inform you that your phone is under warranty, you can get the phone replacement. When you go to the store, please tell them to give you 2.3.4 this time.
Customer: okay
Customer: that is what I asked for today, but was still updated
Russel K: I understand your concern and apologize for the inconvenience.
Russel K: Jordan, all the manufacture replacements handled at our Sprint repair center.
Russel K: I assure you that we will fix your issue. Please visit there to get this done.
Customer: okay.
Customer: can you tell me the closest one to xxxxx?
Russel K: The only repair center is in xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Russel K: Please visit there. We will handle this issue there as well.
Customer: Are you sure they will exchange it for one?
Russel K: Please do not worry about this.
Russel K: I will notate it into your account notes. Please go there, we will fix it.
Customer: alright, thanks
Russel K: You are welcome.
Russel K: Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
Customer: No, not at this time, thanks

Nope I never voided my warranty. They took away my ability to void my warranty after I purchased the phone and I want that ability back. They can't tell me whether or not I can void my warranty on a device I purchased and own, that's my own choice!
I've been contacted by Motorola about this. Hopefully I'll have an update about it early next week.

how DIDN'T you void your warranty? and yes they can no longer honor the warranty if the terms of the warranty are voided... you don't service the car in the way set forth in the warranty, you are no longer covered under said warranty. how is this soo hard to understand. it's the same in EVERY industry...
you're right, they cant tell you that you CANT void your warranty, but if you void the warranty, than they no longer have an legal obligation to fix or replace it. that's why every custom recovery thread, they tell you that it will void your warranty, and no longer be covered under it...
Update : went to Sprint, and got a replacement in the mail.. Refurb with the OTA it... Been contacting Sprint trying to get a new replacement, but so far to no avail

Ever hear of the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act? Maybe you should look into it before spewing your beliefs
Sent from my MB855 using xda app-developers app
He didn't void the warranty because he hadn't rooted or unlocked his phone! He just feels that they should not be able to lock his phone down to prevent him from being able to do those things if he so feels because it is HIS phone, not Motorola's! Like if you buy a car and the manufacturer makes it so that you can't install an air intake under the hood. Even though you know it may void warranty you still have the ability to do it if you want, thats all he (and the rest of us) is asking for!

Ok update:
When I called in they told me that I already talked to them and was told to send it in. I had not talked to them before and they also didn't know what was wrong with the phone. They thought that the screen was still broken. Understandable with how I was phrasing the problem before and I don't think that rep knew what I was talking about. I updated them on the problem about the new bootloader. The rep put me on hold and did research for five minutes and got back to me. As I was talking I tried to take notes as best as I could. This is a lot more paraphrasing and a lot less quotes, the conversation was also a lot longer. I'm trying to give the highlights and tell it is as best as I can.
Rep: "Why would you want to change the firmware?"
MinceMan: "I am an app developer and don't have the money to spend buying different phones for every version of android, which seems to come out every couple of months. I also need to be able to roll forward and back on the versions at will to be able to develop for them."
Rep: "Our policy is to update to the lastest version of the firmware when we get it in for repair. There's no way to change that policy. You can send it in but they will not bring it back to the previous version as that is against our policy."
MinceMan: "So I send it in and you send it back to me with less functionality then what I bought it with. I just want that functionality back."
Rep: "Our policy is to bring it to the lastest firmware version."
MinceMan: "Can I get an sbf which I can flash through RSD lite that will let me roll it back?"
Rep: "No, our policy is only to bring devices to their current versions."
MinceMan: "So there is no body that will help me. There's nothing we can do here? That's it."
Rep: "It's our policy."
MinceMan: "You're losing a customer here, I won't be buying motorola again."
Rep: "I'm sorry."
MinceMan: "I'm sorry? That's it? Could I get an sbf that will unlock the new bootloader. I know guys have that."
Rep: (Tone changes from nice to aggressiveness) "Sir that is for internal use only."
MinceMan: "That's it?"
Rep: "Ok thank you for calling Motorola." Click.

So um... confirmation that the sbf exists right!? (*cough* not really) I could try calling in again with the same case number but it's flagged for sure at this point in time. Also if someone here is good at social engineering they could give it a try but I doubt you could ever get to someone with access to those files in the first place. *prodding/challenge*
I can and will be trying Sprint but if I'm going to get a refurb I would rather it be an epic touch at this point:crying:
P.S.
If your from moto and have access, do the right thing and I promise we'll keep it anonymous. I just want to get this fixed and be a happy customer again.

I would continue escalating the issue both with Motorola and with Sprint. Every time you are told no, ask for a manager or supervisor and plead your case. Also, email Dan Hesse's office (dan at sprint dot com) and tell your story. You have a very valid complaint/issue and you should keep taking it up the ladder until you get a satisfactory result.
You are not asking for anything outlandish, just a device with the previous version loaded or the sbf to unlock your current device.
Good luck and keep fighting the good fight

For all the negative posts I have seen since the prime came out, I just want to give credit where credit is due.
My prime crashed and burned hard after the ICS update; i had the non stop rebooting issues and the prime had turned into a brick.
I received a private message on the XDA forums from the customer service rep asking if he could contact me. At first they asked that I send my unit in so that it could be used for R&D on the issue, and they would send me a new unit once it was received. I objected not wanting to wait 3 weeks for a working unit.
I was then passed a long to a product manager who worked with me on the phone to get a new unit sent to me over night if i signed a legal form that guaranteed I would return my broken unit to them in 14 days.
They also asked if I would like them to open the unit, install ICS, verify all parts are working including the lack of a screen bleed before sending it out. I agreed.
Just wanted to give them proper due, that is amazing customer service, to find me on an end user forum and offer me an exchange. I went from never wanting to buy an Asus product again to them having a lifelong customer.
That's the way it is done.
Nice to hear such a positive story. People tend to forget only bad stories come to these forums normally.
I would like to know about this "mysterious" Asus person as well because my TP has been a brick since ICS update as well. It is permanently stuck at the "gears with exclamation" screen.
Oh I love Asus customer service. They are, after all, the people cleaning up after Asus engineers and whatnot have messed a lot of things up.

This is really great that Asus actually read the forum and providing help on it (although they should have really test their code and prevent this from happening.. at the end it is the first HC -> ICS OTA upgrade in the world)
Hopefully it is just the upgrade code that is causing issue, I believe once they actually release the full recovery zip, people can download that and run a clean install.
That's great- congrats. I got treated like garbage by the ASUS Customer Service team-twice. They refused to replace my tablet- they flat out told me nothing was wrong with it despite the fact that it has never been able to receive an OTA update and can't be rooted.
So they're still on my sh*t list.

I've been saying for years to people that rooting does not affect your ability to return a faulty phone. I have returned dozens of phones rooted rommed and even a few bricks. Verizon does not give a ****, why would they? It's just software , and when the device is refurbished it is wiped with machines that are built to reinstall the factory condition (think of re imaging a pc harddrive with the manufactures build of windows)
But now with phones saying "tampered" I'm seeing more and more people worried ..
Well don't take my word for it...
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/06/1...ging-full-price-of-warranty-phones-if-rooted/
" Our friends at Verizon saw this post and wanted to reach out to clarify everything immediately. First up, is the fact that their policy says absolutely nothing about checking for root on devices. When a phone is received, a phone is checked for three things and that definitely isn’t one of them. They check to see if the box that the device was sent in is damaged, if the outside of the phone looks awful, and if it powers on – satisfy all of those and they move on to the next phone. So basically, these reports of being charged for a rooted phone simply mean that these people were sending in garbage phone with defects."

You unlock your bootloader you voided warrenty. This is why we need s-off so we can go back to full factory if need be. I sure wont be sending my rezound into verizon.

not every s-off method, is capable of turning back to s-on..
The point is.. it doesnt matter. Verizon is not checking that.
As I said , I've sent back many devices rooted. HTC dinc.. sent back like 6 of them with s-off.. same with thunderbolt and dinc2. And now.. between my wife and I, we sent in 3 rezounds.. they have all been unlocked and rooted.
So either I'm really lucky (which would he news to me) or verizon doesn't give a ****.. as indicated by them saying "we don't give a ****" in that article

not incorrect info. read the disclaimers on the htc dev site, the revolutionary unlock site, heck most if not all of the custom rom threads. if you unlock and root you voided the warranty, since if you relock the bootloader on the rezound both verizon and htc will know by it saying "relocked". im not taking the chance of being charged $500+ to ship it in for repairs.

Your s-off obsession is starting to worry me.. you need another hobby.
And read the disclaimers--it says you MAY void your warranty. HTC is effectively letting you know they'll choose to honor the warranty or not. And they may. Which means it's not voided. It means it might be voided.

it's not an obsession at all, it's the fact that if my phone bricks or becomes defective once i unlock via htc dev there is no way to go back to a full factory state. im sure this is why alot of users have not unlocked and just stay stock. trust me if i knew how to make s-off happen i would. i remember when this phone first launched the devs were hellbound on trying to get it achieved and since it's become a dead project up until recently.

It's become a dead project because there's zero evidence that not being able to go back to a factory state matters in the slightest. To anyone. To the user, to Verizon, to HTC. It means nothing to have "relocked" stamped at the top of your phone.

might not void the htc warranty but it does void your insurance with verizon. which means i could not get a free replacement device without paying or going without my phone for a few weeks. that's all i was saying.

Dude, tons of people have done it on this forum and others, with, as far as I know, a 100% success rate. You're not a guinea pig, you're among thousands of other people who have done the exact same thing.
I guess I don't really give a **** in the grand scheme of things, my Rezound is off contract, but it's a fear that has no basis in any sort of experience any user has had with Verizon, Assurion, or HTC. And if you have insurance, just dunk your phone in your toilet so it doesn't turn on if you're that worried.
I've sent two Rezounds back to Verizon, both rooted and relocked, no problems at all.

so even with a statement from Verizon saying they don't check for that stuff, you still think that they do? But you offer no evidence of this. That's fine..
I am going to get to the bottom of this, because it seems that everyone is just going off of what they "think" is the right answer, with no real evidence.
Im a researcher in physics and engineering, and I can assure you that if someone on my team said "well ya this is what happens because i said so..." it would not go over well.
If it takes me a day or a month, im going to get definitive answers about exactly what is covered and not covered under warranty replacements when it comes to rooting and unlocking.
my hypothesis is that if a phone has a factory defect (bad pixels, faulty buttons) then rooted or not, unlocked or not, it will be replaced. I base this off of YEARS of replacing DOZENS or devices, and not once have I ever "restored" them to factory conditions. I have never been charged for a device. They also say you have to return the device in 10 days or you will be charged. Ive returned devices 2 months later and never been charged, I often wonder if then even verify that it was returned at all..
Anyway, I will get back to this.. my biggest pet peeve is people passing faulty, or "propaganda" information with absolutely no evidence to support it. (myself included)

I agree, there's no point in arguing. Send it back, don't send it back, it's your choice in the end.
and you wouldn't be a guinea pig, I have, like the OP, sent back over a dozen phones between Eris, inc1, and inc2 that were each time still rooted with s-off, and never had an issue.
I am not however going to care whether or not you choose to do so, nor should anyone else. It's your phone, you paid for it, do with it as you please.

key words here.. "MAY NOT" and "RESULTING FROM"
This means that normal factory defects will not be affected by rooting or unlocking. things like dead pixels, faulty buttons. etc.. as they are not "resulting from the unlocking of the bootloader"
this is pretty cut and dry in my opinion, still, I have emailed both VZW and HTC in order to confirm

I mean, it's not totally a myth--Verizon could, I suppose, decide tomorrow to start checking all phones for relocked bootloaders just to **** with us. But the point is that they haven't, and there's no evidence they will, and even if they decided to do that, we'd probably get wind of it.
I just got my note back from Samsung this past Thursday. I just flashed it with Liquid Jelly Bean and the newest Gapps. It won't reboot but when I hook it up to my computer one drive in Windows Explorer goes on & off repeatedly. I do think it has life but there is no video, sound or vibrations? Can I handle this or will it need service again? Thank you in advance for any help given!
Personally I think you should man up and send it to Jtag. I assume since you sent it to Samsung, that you have one fraudulent claim already. Why would it be the fault of the manufacturer that you bricked your phone (twice)?
Take responsibility for your actions. And if not, please don't post about it.

I know. I wish I had noticed
So there is no question ... You take reasonability ... Send to jtag this time ... Learn your lesson ... Read better from now on. Right?

Would it be safe to say, that 99% of device bricks are user error?
And the other 1% either bad files or hardware failure ?
I think so, and wholly agree that if you make a mistake and damage your device, then take responsibility and pay to repair the mistake.
Making another party (Samsung) pay for the mistake just drives up the cost of new devices for everyone.
This device is nearly a year old (ancient by device standards) yet the retail price is still $500.00.
Personally, I already paid for mine, and I really don't want to pay for device repairs that I didn't cause, due too people not doing the research they should have when I buy another one.
Now I get it, and I'm not a heartless azzhat, but if your gonna lie, don't advertise it here....g
I'll add one last thing .. If your going to screw around with a device that is this expensive, don't trust a link from an email. Do some research. Come to xda ... Ask questions if needed, read all you can, and read some more. How many junk emails did you delete today alone?
This is 99.9% your fault. Send it to Jtag ... Take your lumps. LEARN. Accept that it's not Samsung that failed. I for one will think more highly of you.
When you get your phone back ... Before anything else ... Go here:

Whatever turns you on. Just remember when you dig one grave you better dig another one. I can't see the problem of exercising my rights to warranty. Sorry y'all are all Scrooges. Why should it bother you how I do it. Whatever u chose to do wouldn't cause me to harass you.
But still in my Christian heart. I wish all of you a very blessed Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!!!!
In your lying thieving Christian heart.
you are committing a crime. You void the warranty by just rooting it, you tired to install a custom os, and failed. The only right you're exercising is your right to commit fraud...again.
It's your fault your phone doesn't work now.
Why should we, the modding community as a whole start to jump through hoops to get access to our own devices because manufacturers and carriers want to lock down devices because people are stealing from them?
That's the main reason why New devices are so expensive and Verizon forces locked boot loaders... which has set a precedent, and if this continues I see other carriers following suit.
OK guys point well made.
OP,
You already used your warrenty on something that could have been a device defect or an issue caused by something you did that caused the part to fail. Either way this time was fully your doing. What you plan to do is a big problem and is not condoned by this site. Man up and get it fixed yourself.

now the Note won't even turn on or go into download mode or do anything at all. I made a total noobie mistake and now the Note is bricked. I guess I need to try it, got nothing to lose at this point. Any suggestions?:crying::crying:

If your under warranty you could get ahold of Samsung and see about sending it in for repair. Turn around time is roughly 3 weeks. I doubt that a "jig" is going to work (from my previous experience.) You could send it out to get it JTAG repaired. Which is more probably what your thinking of. Either way your looking at between a couple days to a couple weeks to get it fixed.
If your sending it in to Samsung, you could tell them that you were installing an app, and then the phone turned off and wouldn't turn on or anything.
You need to pay up for the mistake and get jtag. It's going to cost you about 50 bucks. Sending it to Samsung is considered fraud since this is not a warranty issue but user error

I guess you ignored my advice to educate yourself. You're getting off cheap. Slow down.
thanks guys, I've ordered a repair service with Josh Groce at MTV as mentioned in posts above, paid $50 through Google Wallet (you can also pay through Paypal but they are evil), now I just need to find a postal office near me.
Just to make it clear, I never said I was going to return it to Samsung for warranty repair. I didn't know Sammy offered a 2-year warranty on their consumer mobile products, you learn new things everyday especially on XDA!!! (sarcasm)
It shows there are two kinds of people here: one group wants to really help people in need to the greatest extent including legal and possibly illegal means, the other group just wants to sit on their asses and go "I told you so, you should be more careful and do research first"
I did my basic research, including asking newb questions on xda. Based on what you guys said, I bought an i717 instead of the t-mobile version. Because I was carrying out a research, I had dozens of tabs on open on Firefox, and that's a contributing factor as to why I mistakenly flashed an international kernel on my at&t note.
Before you jump in, fingers waggin, saying useless things like "do search," please realize that an older device like the original note can have a long and sordid history of development. I was overwhelmed by the variety of "guides" and "howtos" and questions and answers when I first started reading about the Samsung Galaxy Note. Please be kind to semi-newbs like me, we are the silent majority here. (ranting)
One more rant before I go back to sleep (it's 6:25am here in rainy Southern California),
kernel developers should NOT be allowed to name their kernels "UNIVERSAL" I was suckered in to flash a "UNIVERSAL" kernel on my ATT Note I717. That UNIVERSAL kernel was only for International Note N7000.
I know, I should've known better. Well, a lesson learned, and as someone said above, it only cost $50.
If you are referring to me in your rant, I never even referred to you in my post. I pointed out that the posted suggestion above to return to Samsung for warranty was not only fraud .. But also against xda rules to be talking about. As for the post I agreed with ... If you've been reading around here lately you know there has been a rash of "help I've bricked my phone"threads lately. Some were due to a bad link to a rom outside xda. For some reason ... a lot of users here think that Samsung should replace under warranty for their mistakes. It's not the case. Simple fact is ... once you root the phone you have no warranty. That said, I believe that there is a grey area ... a know hardware failure ..I think it is fine to revert to stock to warranty.
I'm glad you've worked you issue out and wish you luck in the future. But instead of going on a rant to people who you may need help from in the future ... ... Just saying .. don't burn any bridges.
Have a good weekend
Edit:
In rereading ... I really don't think anyone was that harsh. Some of these have gotten quite ugly.

Allright, got some needed sleep, got up and went to the post office to mail off my bricked Note to [email protected] in Texas. Priority mail to Texas from Southern Cal cost about $6 plus insurance cost $4, so all told about U$10 to mail my Note (sans batt, back cover, stylus, sim card and sdcard). According to the MobileTechVideo site, it will take about 4 business for Josh to repair it. So I'm looking at about 2 weeks before I can get mine back. Kinda wishing that I had sprung for express service for another $15-20.
I'm now regretting the rants I spewed out earlier. However, I believe I made a couple of valid observations. I am grateful to those who pointed out the jtag repair, specifically sending it for repair to mobiletechvideo. I know I can attempt the repair myself but for $50 it's well worth it for me to let a seasoned pro handle it.
One of my pet peeves is the "I am holier than you" attitude, you know the kind who goes around saying "I told you to research, make a backup nandroid, do md5 hash check on ALL your downloads, etc..." You know what, things have happened and now you're holding a brick in your hand due to whatever you did. No sense in kicking a man when he's down. How can you call it a help? And to those of you who clicked on the Thanks button to these kind of people, you know who you are, Fie on You!!!
To Bubbajoe,
Cool, I didn't mean to refer you or anyone else in my regrettable rants in my previous posts. I thought I needed to clarify that I never thought sending my bricked note to Samsung for warranty repair was an option. Thanks for pointing out that it would've constituted a fraud, had I done it. Having said that, now that the cat is out of the bag, I now know I have an option. I am sure other people who read this thread have now seen the option of sending it back to Samsung for repair under warranty. I don't want to judge people, what they do with their stuff is their private matter, I can only hope that you would do the right thing. I believe in karma, what goes around, comes around. If you gloat over other people's misfortune, your turn will come.
It seemed harsh to me. I was down and instead of helping me get up, some people were taunting and kicking me: "I told you so," "you didn't take my advice," "why didn't you read", etc, etc, etc... Do you call these advice "help" that deserved to be thanked???
From just reading the title your gonna need jtag. Its like $50-$60

Sir if your rant was directed at me I never said you were implying you were going to send it to samsung. I was only pointing out that that advice that someone else mentioned was not a good idea.
I am glad that you got in touch with mobiletechvideos to get it repaired. He has helped many people out with hard bricks around here. As for doing the repair yourself you need a riff box to do jtag and the cost of that is a lot more than what you ended up paying for Josh to do the service.

He flashed a kernel for a completely different phone. You don't need root privileges to do that. So, no, this doesn't contradict the xda position.
Buy a new gasoline fueled car, then go and put diesel fuel in it and destroy the engine. No dealer will cover that error under a warranty. You pay for your mistake and learn to double check next time.

While I highly respect Adam's opinion .. If you look at the attached post, you can see the statement copied directly from the Samsung website. Adam may be right ... Maybe not... But since it's Samsung we would be dealing with .. I would say the statement I made holds true. I'm not willing to fight my way to the supreme court to find out. If you are .. Let me know how it turns out. Also if you can gain root privileges without modifying or altering the electric circuitry .. Let me know that as well. Here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36727175
As far as xda .. If the official opinion is that rooting doesn't void the warranty .. I have to wonder ... If we do have a rooted user .. Say with a hardware issue that wants to claim warranty .. why are we not seeing everyone post that it's no problem .. Just send it back rooted. We see responses on how to unroot to claim warranty. Why bother? Why aren't the mods closing these threads stating that the unrooting is not needed? Additionally if I'm denied warranty, I'd venture to say that xda would not replace my phone or help me hire an attorney to fright Samsung.

So this is going to sound odd, but hear me out. I like many of you got the ME7 update. On sunday I tried rerooting and reflashing. Soft bricked my phone. Used ODIN to re-install ME7 firmware. All runs fine. In the midst of this however I panicked and called verizon for a replacement under warranty. I made the claim that "I unplugged my phone during the ME7 update" and that's how it bricked. If the phone they send me is MDK can I send my ME7 back? Should I "re-brick" my ME7 and send it back to them or just do a data wipe and re package it? Would they be able to tell?

True. . . but I'm not sure I want to pay the full price for the phone they sent me under warranty. I would rather send the replacement back and wait for the ME7 bootloader to be cracked.

Yup

You mean, send back the new phone they're sending me? I can't think you would want me to tell them I'm rooting and re-flashing my device. . .

I mean if your device does not have any faults why are you getting a replacement? I understand you requested before you realized it is actually ok. You came here asking for advice on how to trick a company that is honoring a defective device that actually is not defective. So yeah send back your replacement or find a legit defect with your device. Sounds like an integrity issue to me.

Alright the point is taken about being honest. You don't really need to make an underhanded comment about my character over something like this though.
I would tell them that you just fixed it with Odin..
I called them and said I fixed my phone. Sending the replacement back. Goodbye MDK=/.

Why be underhanded about your character? Your title is how to trick Verizon? What this really is though is a hey look at me guys I commited fraud to replace a device that I knowingly and willingly violated my warranty with and had verizon send me a replacement device only to find out my original device wasnt broken after all. To add to the character comment even though you've fixed your device you're still contemplating continuing with the fraud by purposely bricking a device that you repaired...
I think this whole thread speaks volumes about your character or lack there of. You posted this on the internet. You screwed up the device. You fixed it. Own it.

The one thing I hate about the XDA forums is the rudeness of some people. It's completely up to the OP regarding his conscience in the matter. I will give you my opinion:
I have never read about anybody getting back charged for returning phone that was modded / rooted. Those of us that have been long time VZW customers have seen the decline of trust with them. I know it's too late for you to change course now but in the future you should have no regrets if you decide for another equipment swap. With the root / unlock bounty reaching towards $6K you can ask any of them how they feel. VZW sneaked in the so called OTA update with minor improvements overall; and completely locking down the phone.
It's up to you in the end but I wouldn't worry..... You would be the first casualty.
Edit: The title of your thread didn't help matters either

I agree with you completely, it's on the person. The question was how do I trick verizon....so my answer was don't. If you don't want the feedback, don't ask. No rudeness was intended. I am fairly sure the lack of ownership on mistakes is frowned upon in the XDA community. Oh well, my opinion was to be honest. Enjoy your decision
Nothing rude was said to the op. The fact of the matter is that the very premise of this thread was to seek advice on warranty fraud, which is illegal.

It probably wouldnt even matter if you sent back the "broke" one back fixed, they probably don't open each phone package to verify it functions, probably just check for water damage and cracks
Alright, alright, I dug my own grave on this one. I don't want to resort to such tactics but like everyone else I'm a little peeved with Verizon so I'm contemplating doing things I normally wouldn't do. Not that it's an excuse but making sweeping judgments about my character is a little overboard. It's not like I sneak out at night punching babies or anything. I'm annoyed that I was hoodwinked into an update that prevented me from modding my phone. I'm sure I'm not the only one. I just saw a potential way out and wanted to know if anyone had any experience with getting charged for sending back a rooted phone. If you think I should just be honest, say so. This whole "you lack integrity," stuff is B.S. If Verizon had any integrity I wouldn't even be contemplating pulling a stunt like this.

The Verizon rep said something similar. He said they check for water damage, broken screen, etc.

Here's the deal, no one thinks you are a bad person. Strike me down, but verizon is not lacking integrity here. Never once was this device advertised as being unlocked or unlockable and they have never said they support modding. If this was a nexus that they locked the bootloader on then yes, problem. I said be honest, my point was this decison is an integrity one, not you lack integrity. If you wanted to know if will VZW charge you for returning a rooted phone, that would have been a more appropriate question and thread, not how do I trick Verizon. Lesson learned, not beating up on you.
The OP owned it, he said he was sending the replacement device back. Good for him. Like others I wasnt trying to come across as being rude as much as appalled at the blatant disregard of personal responsibility. At the same time posting this type of title and thread up on XDA is kinda asking for it, which again, the OP has acknowledged.
We know we hate the carriers locking devices down. Locking them actually presents more of a risk of bricking than unlocked devices that you can always flash back to stock. Almost every thread here has something to the effect of "by following such and such your warranty is now void and we are not responsible", come on, we're registered here at XDA, we all know this. If we want an open device get a dev or nexus device and get an extended warranty or insurance option, they're out there.
Congrats to the op for staying classy, your choices are your choices and you'll live with whatever choices you decide to make.
And as we all should know by now, dont post on the interwebz if you dont want to hear what people, trolls and non-trolls alike have to say...

Think of it like this. What do you use your phone for? To talk on the phone. Send messages. Email. Take pictures. Surf the web. Play games. Watch videos. Video chat. The other 20% is customization. If this was the year 1999 you would only be able to use your phone to make calls send messages and half-assed surf the web. Your phone is used for those types of things. Just because an update happened to a phone doesn't mean that you cannot use your phone to do those things it only limits you from updating to a different ROMS. ATT Verizon and them paid the money so they could have the locked boot loaders for the phones. If you didn't want restrictions then you wouldn't have used the upgrade you had and went and paid full price for the GPE s4 or other phone. Not saying that I like having a locked boot loader but since Obama came into office this is how its going to be because he's UN Americanized. But there are people working hard to get the boot loader unlocked it just takes time. You can still root it. Just my 2 cents
