How to trick Verizon? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

So this is going to sound odd, but hear me out. I like many of you got the ME7 update. On sunday I tried rerooting and reflashing. Soft bricked my phone. Used ODIN to re-install ME7 firmware. All runs fine. In the midst of this however I panicked and called verizon for a replacement under warranty. I made the claim that "I unplugged my phone during the ME7 update" and that's how it bricked. If the phone they send me is MDK can I send my ME7 back? Should I "re-brick" my ME7 and send it back to them or just do a data wipe and re package it? Would they be able to tell?

True. . . but I'm not sure I want to pay the full price for the phone they sent me under warranty. I would rather send the replacement back and wait for the ME7 bootloader to be cracked.

I mean if your device does not have any faults why are you getting a replacement? I understand you requested before you realized it is actually ok. You came here asking for advice on how to trick a company that is honoring a defective device that actually is not defective. So yeah send back your replacement or find a legit defect with your device. Sounds like an integrity issue to me.

Alright the point is taken about being honest. You don't really need to make an underhanded comment about my character over something like this though.

I would tell them that you just fixed it with Odin..

I called them and said I fixed my phone. Sending the replacement back. Goodbye MDK=/.

Why be underhanded about your character? Your title is how to trick Verizon? What this really is though is a hey look at me guys I commited fraud to replace a device that I knowingly and willingly violated my warranty with and had verizon send me a replacement device only to find out my original device wasnt broken after all. To add to the character comment even though you've fixed your device you're still contemplating continuing with the fraud by purposely bricking a device that you repaired...
I think this whole thread speaks volumes about your character or lack there of. You posted this on the internet. You screwed up the device. You fixed it. Own it.

The one thing I hate about the XDA forums is the rudeness of some people. It's completely up to the OP regarding his conscience in the matter. I will give you my opinion:
I have never read about anybody getting back charged for returning phone that was modded / rooted. Those of us that have been long time VZW customers have seen the decline of trust with them. I know it's too late for you to change course now but in the future you should have no regrets if you decide for another equipment swap. With the root / unlock bounty reaching towards $6K you can ask any of them how they feel. VZW sneaked in the so called OTA update with minor improvements overall; and completely locking down the phone.
It's up to you in the end but I wouldn't worry..... You would be the first casualty.

I agree with you completely, it's on the person. The question was how do I trick verizon....so my answer was don't. If you don't want the feedback, don't ask. No rudeness was intended. I am fairly sure the lack of ownership on mistakes is frowned upon in the XDA community. Oh well, my opinion was to be honest. Enjoy your decision

Nothing rude was said to the op. The fact of the matter is that the very premise of this thread was to seek advice on warranty fraud, which is illegal.

It probably wouldnt even matter if you sent back the "broke" one back fixed, they probably don't open each phone package to verify it functions, probably just check for water damage and cracks

I don't want to resort to such tactics but like everyone else I'm a little peeved with Verizon so I'm contemplating doing things I normally wouldn't do. Not that it's an excuse but making sweeping judgments about my character is a little overboard. It's not like I sneak out at night punching babies or anything. I'm annoyed that I was hoodwinked into an update that prevented me from modding my phone. I'm sure I'm not the only one. I just saw a potential way out and wanted to know if anyone had any experience with getting charged for sending back a rooted phone. If you think I should just be honest, say so. Here's the deal, no one thinks you are a bad person. Strike me down, but verizon is not lacking integrity here. Never once was this device advertised as being unlocked or unlockable and they have never said they support modding. If this was a nexus that they locked the bootloader on then yes, problem. I said be honest, my point was this decison is an integrity one, not you lack integrity. If you wanted to know if will VZW charge you for returning a rooted phone, that would have been a more appropriate question and thread, not how do I trick Verizon. Lesson learned, not beating up on you.

The OP owned it, he said he was sending the replacement device back. Good for him. Like others I wasnt trying to come across as being rude as much as appalled at the blatant disregard of personal responsibility. At the same time posting this type of title and thread up on XDA is kinda asking for it, which again, the OP has acknowledged.
We know we hate the carriers locking devices down. Locking them actually presents more of a risk of bricking than unlocked devices that you can always flash back to stock. Almost every thread here has something to the effect of "by following such and such your warranty is now void and we are not responsible", come on, we're registered here at XDA, we all know this. If we want an open device get a dev or nexus device and get an extended warranty or insurance option, they're out there.
Congrats to the op for staying classy, your choices are your choices and you'll live with whatever choices you decide to make.
And as we all should know by now, dont post on the interwebz if you dont want to hear what people, trolls and non-trolls alike have to say...

Think of it like this. What do you use your phone for? To talk on the phone. Send messages. Email. Take pictures. Surf the web. Play games. Watch videos. Video chat. The other 20% is customization. If this was the year 1999 you would only be able to use your phone to make calls send messages and half-assed surf the web. Your phone is used for those types of things. Just because an update happened to a phone doesn't mean that you cannot use your phone to do those things it only limits you from updating to a different ROMS. ATT Verizon and them paid the money so they could have the locked boot loaders for the phones. If you didn't want restrictions then you wouldn't have used the upgrade you had and went and paid full price for the GPE s4 or other phone. Not saying that I like having a locked boot loader but since Obama came into office this is how its going to be because he's UN Americanized. But there are people working hard to get the boot loader unlocked it just takes time. You can still root it. Just my 2 cents

Yeah that sucks, but what did you really expect? HTC can't be expected to support unlocked phones bc ppl can really screw up their phones if they don't know what they're doing. HTC is only protecting themselves and this was absolutely expected IMHO. Good news article though regardless.

I'm glad that some companys have listened to the community. We asked for them to give us unlocked bootloaders t and they are ACTUALLY delivering. Of course it voids the warranty I'm not suprised at all. Stops *****ing bout it cuz they could've NOT unlocked them and than everything would be the same. Change is good in my opinion.

Definitely will. We'll have less people coming over to this forum and whining at us because we won't hold their hand through the entire rooting process (although there has been enough of that already anyways), and more time for expansion ROM cooking.
And +1 to easily being able to fool anyone into thinking our warranty isn't void.
Lets be honest here, anyone on this forum would never use the MFW anyways, we are all here for one reason and one reason only. To get the most out of our phones and exploit their capabilities. You technically void your warranty with any other root anyways, so what's the difference? We are all taking a risk at doing anything with our phones in the first place. I can't say I blame HTC for taking their stand. They will give you the unlock, but you have to be willing to put your feet in the water too.
I just think it's funny. During the flame wars there were multiple people saying "htc would not release something that voids warranty."

I saw this posted yesterday, but ever since I started rooting phones with my Hero a year and a half ago I always knew it technically voided the warranty. It is easy to switch back to stock and I have never had them even check when I returned a phone in the past.
Glad that they are going to release it. Not suprised that it voids the warranty. No different than putting mods on your car.....

This is exactly why it was in HTCs best interest to release the unlocked bootloader before we got perm-root.
To bad...they fail.

Isn't that what RUU's are for?! I haven't had any problems at all returning previously rooted phones to Sprint, even after bricking my GF's Optimus S trying to get it back to stock, they took it back and gave us a new one. If you don't know how to revert to stock, you shouldn't be messing with root in the first place.

I soft bricked my droid razr by restoring a back up session and then it wouldnt get passed the "M" motorola logo. Any suggestions on what I should say if i take it to verizon to try to get it replaced since i preordered it. Also is there any way to fix it with back up files? I went to them and said that battery died , i plugged it in and went to sleep, when i got up the screen was like that. they took 1.5 hours trying to "fix" it but then did give me new phone

Motorola left the bootloader unlocked but Verizon locked it. Stop being dumb on the internet because you can.

You guys don't realize how much a company makes off of you and furthermore how a company cares about you at all if that. The guys that keep doing the "right" thing go ahead and keep living life doing the "right" thing. Your are then 100X more likely to get ****ed and then they'll make more money off you good for them. Do you ever think about how they outsource all the US jobs to foreign countries for cheap labor and then sell to us 1000% more then what it cost them. So you must think that's right? your right it affects the cost of goods to us. they dont ever lose but instead pass it on to the consumer.

While putting the battery back in, plug in the USB cable and volume down.
Or find a spare battery to test, or jig.

Given that Juggernaut 3.7 is for the T-Mobile T989, it is most likely what bricked your phone.
God only knows what trying to install it would do to an I777.
Believe that ROM included boot loaders which got you, well different mount points I believe as well. If you're within 30 days try talking your way into a replacement. If not then time to buy a new one and chalk it up to experience gained.

I haven't seen anyone say anything about jtag for our phone, but if it was my phone, I think I'd look into jtag unbricking first, find out if it is possible, before replacing it.

I believe Connexion2005 does JTAG unbricks for the I777.
Actually, you're hosed. I saw in another one of your posts that you have the Telus "SGS 2 X" - which appears to be a rebadged T-Mobile T989 or maybe a rebadged ****rocket.
It has NOTHING in common with the I777. My kernel is ONLY for the SGH-I777. You probably overwrite something critical when you flashed something that was NOT intended for your phone. The T989 and ****rocket have a COMPLETELY different partition layout than the I9100 and I777.
I have no idea why you have been posting in the I777 forums and trying to flash I777 kernels when you don't have an I777, and you clearly knew this fact if you were running Juggernaut.

It's going to be because of morons like you that warranty returns on Android phones are going to become a lot harder in future. I hope you exchanged it for an iPhone or something.

Let me explain. Developers come to this forum to share ideas and give people the means to do things extraordinary with their devices that the manufacturers/carriers did not intend. The fact that you were flashing the WRONG software to your phone but included Entropy's name in the post, likely came off the wrong way.
Also take into account that people that abuse the system, yes, you're an abuser of the system, frustrate the rest of us honest customers. Next time I have a legitimate hardware issue that requires replacement and the rep gives me crap because they've "cracked down" on replacements, I'll be sure to send you the bill.

It wasn't a warranty return and I didn't go through insurance I just knew the person at the booth and had just got the phone.

I would not be all the surprised if they end up charging you for the new phone. Unless the phone is completely destroyed, they have ways of telling you rooted it, or at least tried too...

I'm not on the OP's side by any means and I agree with the bashing of the OP for being not so smart. How ever the terms of mine and most others on ATT would have no issue returning a rooted phone. There is nothing that states flashing custom rom's voids warranty just water and extreme abuse.

Hmmm. This is an important issue. Do you know this for fact or are you making assumptions? What is peoples experience with returning rooted and bricked devices? I don't know, but I would predict that the answers will be mixed and highly varied and most likely due to how local stores deal with this on their own.

No... The whole reason behind flash counters and locked bootloaders is to enforce the warranty clauses that custom firmware = voided warranty.
We are fortunate that AT&T is lax about checking the counter as long as the ROM is not obviously rooted or custom, and also assumes that hardbricked devices are suffering from hardware failures, however - if more people do stupid **** like the OP, they'll be more likely to crack down and start waiting for Samsung to do a final determination on failure cause before refunding.
It has ALWAYS been AT&T policy that custom firmware (and even rooting) = voided warranty. Similarly - Barnes and Noble cashiers are specifically trained to identify rooted Nook Tablets/Colors and immediately reject the return and void the warranty if a device is rooted. (Which is why you need to unroot before a return...)

Rooting does not void your warranty...

I've been saying for years to people that rooting does not affect your ability to return a faulty phone. I have returned dozens of phones rooted rommed and even a few bricks. Verizon does not give a ****, why would they? It's just software , and when the device is refurbished it is wiped with machines that are built to reinstall the factory condition (think of re imaging a pc harddrive with the manufactures build of windows)
But now with phones saying "tampered" I'm seeing more and more people worried ..

You unlock your bootloader you voided warrenty. This is why we need s-off so we can go back to full factory if need be. I sure wont be sending my rezound into verizon.

not every s-off method, is capable of turning back to s-on..
The point is.. it doesnt matter. Verizon is not checking that.
As I said , I've sent back many devices rooted. HTC dinc.. sent back like 6 of them with s-off.. same with thunderbolt and dinc2. And now.. between my wife and I, we sent in 3 rezounds.. they have all been unlocked and rooted.
So either I'm really lucky (which would he news to me) or verizon doesn't give a ****.. as indicated by them saying "we don't give a ****" in that article

not incorrect info. read the disclaimers on the htc dev site, the revolutionary unlock site, heck most if not all of the custom rom threads. if you unlock and root you voided the warranty, since if you relock the bootloader on the rezound both verizon and htc will know by it saying "relocked". im not taking the chance of being charged $500+ to ship it in for repairs.

Your s-off obsession is starting to worry me.. you need another hobby.
And read the disclaimers--it says you MAY void your warranty. HTC is effectively letting you know they'll choose to honor the warranty or not. And they may. Which means it's not voided. It means it might be voided.

it's not an obsession at all, it's the fact that if my phone bricks or becomes defective once i unlock via htc dev there is no way to go back to a full factory state. im sure this is why alot of users have not unlocked and just stay stock. trust me if i knew how to make s-off happen i would. i remember when this phone first launched the devs were hellbound on trying to get it achieved and since it's become a dead project up until recently.

It's become a dead project because there's zero evidence that not being able to go back to a factory state matters in the slightest. To anyone. To the user, to Verizon, to HTC. It means nothing to have "relocked" stamped at the top of your phone.

might not void the htc warranty but it does void your insurance with verizon. which means i could not get a free replacement device without paying or going without my phone for a few weeks. that's all i was saying.

There's zero evidence of that as well. There's simply nothing to indicate your fears are grounded in any sort of fact.
Edit: Tons of people have sent in a relocked phone, myself included, and it's never been a problem for anyone. Ever.

not going to argue, i just know i won't be a guinea pig and try to ship it in. it also boils down to what tech you have working on your phone. i remember in my sprint days some stores would flag your device and some would not.

Dude, tons of people have done it on this forum and others, with, as far as I know, a 100% success rate. You're not a guinea pig, you're among thousands of other people who have done the exact same thing.
I guess I don't really give a **** in the grand scheme of things, my Rezound is off contract, but it's a fear that has no basis in any sort of experience any user has had with Verizon, Assurion, or HTC. And if you have insurance, just dunk your phone in your toilet so it doesn't turn on if you're that worried.
I've sent two Rezounds back to Verizon, both rooted and relocked, no problems at all.

I am going to get to the bottom of this, because it seems that everyone is just going off of what they "think" is the right answer, with no real evidence.
Im a researcher in physics and engineering, and I can assure you that if someone on my team said "well ya this is what happens because i said so..." it would not go over well.
If it takes me a day or a month, im going to get definitive answers about exactly what is covered and not covered under warranty replacements when it comes to rooting and unlocking.
my hypothesis is that if a phone has a factory defect (bad pixels, faulty buttons) then rooted or not, unlocked or not, it will be replaced. I base this off of YEARS of replacing DOZENS or devices, and not once have I ever "restored" them to factory conditions. I have never been charged for a device. They also say you have to return the device in 10 days or you will be charged. Ive returned devices 2 months later and never been charged, I often wonder if then even verify that it was returned at all..
Anyway, I will get back to this.. my biggest pet peeve is people passing faulty, or "propaganda" information with absolutely no evidence to support it. (myself included)

and you wouldn't be a guinea pig, I have, like the OP, sent back over a dozen phones between Eris, inc1, and inc2 that were each time still rooted with s-off, and never had an issue.
I am not however going to care whether or not you choose to do so, nor should anyone else. It's your phone, you paid for it, do with it as you please.

key words here.. "MAY NOT" and "RESULTING FROM"
This means that normal factory defects will not be affected by rooting or unlocking. things like dead pixels, faulty buttons. etc.. as they are not "resulting from the unlocking of the bootloader"
this is pretty cut and dry in my opinion, still, I have emailed both VZW and HTC in order to confirm

I mean, it's not totally a myth--Verizon could, I suppose, decide tomorrow to start checking all phones for relocked bootloaders just to **** with us. But the point is that they haven't, and there's no evidence they will, and even if they decided to do that, we'd probably get wind of it.

now the Note won't even turn on or go into download mode or do anything at all. I made a total noobie mistake and now the Note is bricked. I guess there's a first time for everything, never bricked a phone before in my life. I did some search and I hear there's a thingamajiggie called "Samsung debrick jig?" I guess I need to try it, got nothing to lose at this point. Any suggestions?:crying::crying:

If your under warranty you could get ahold of Samsung and see about sending it in for repair. Turn around time is roughly 3 weeks. I doubt that a "jig" is going to work (from my previous experience.) You could send it out to get it JTAG repaired. Which is more probably what your thinking of. Either way your looking at between a couple days to a couple weeks to get it fixed.
If your sending it in to Samsung, you could tell them that you were installing an app, and then the phone turned off and wouldn't turn on or anything.
You need to pay up for the mistake and get jtag. It's going to cost you about 50 bucks. Sending it to Samsung is considered fraud since this is not a warranty issue but user error

thanks guys, I've ordered a repair service with Josh Groce at MTV as mentioned in posts above, paid $50 through Google Wallet (you can also pay through Paypal but they are evil), now I just need to find a postal office near me.
Just to make it clear, I never said I was going to return it to Samsung for warranty repair. I didn't know Sammy offered a 2-year warranty on their consumer mobile products, you learn new things everyday especially on XDA!!! (sarcasm)
It shows there are two kinds of people here: one group wants to really help people in need to the greatest extent including legal and possibly illegal means, the other group just wants to sit on their asses and go "I told you so, you should be more careful and do research first"
I did my basic research, including asking newb questions on xda. Based on what you guys said, I bought an i717 instead of the t-mobile version. Because I was carrying out a research, I had dozens of tabs on open on Firefox, and that's a contributing factor as to why I mistakenly flashed an international kernel on my at&t note.
Before you jump in, fingers waggin, saying useless things like "do search," please realize that an older device like the original note can have a long and sordid history of development. I was overwhelmed by the variety of "guides" and "howtos" and questions and answers when I first started reading about the Samsung Galaxy Note. Please be kind to semi-newbs like me, we are the silent majority here. (ranting)
One more rant before I go back to sleep (it's 6:25am here in rainy Southern California),
kernel developers should NOT be allowed to name their kernels "UNIVERSAL" I was suckered in to flash a "UNIVERSAL" kernel on my ATT Note I717. That UNIVERSAL kernel was only for International Note N7000.
I know, I should've known better. Well, a lesson learned, and as someone said above, it only cost $50.
If you are referring to me in your rant, I never even referred to you in my post. I pointed out that the posted suggestion above to return to Samsung for warranty was not only fraud .. But also against xda rules to be talking about. As for the post I agreed with ... If you've been reading around here lately you know there has been a rash of "help I've bricked my phone"threads lately. Some were due to a bad link to a rom outside xda. For some reason ... a lot of users here think that Samsung should replace under warranty for their mistakes. It's not the case. Simple fact is ... once you root the phone you have no warranty. That said, I believe that there is a grey area ... a know hardware failure ..I think it is fine to revert to stock to warranty.
I'm glad you've worked you issue out and wish you luck in the future. But instead of going on a rant to people who you may need help from in the future ... ... Just saying .. don't burn any bridges.

Allright, got some needed sleep, got up and went to the post office to mail off my bricked Note to [email protected] in Texas. Priority mail to Texas from Southern Cal cost about $6 plus insurance cost $4, so all told about U$10 to mail my Note (sans batt, back cover, stylus, sim card and sdcard). According to the MobileTechVideo site, it will take about 4 business for Josh to repair it. So I'm looking at about 2 weeks before I can get mine back. Kinda wishing that I had sprung for express service for another $15-20.
I'm now regretting the rants I spewed out earlier. However, I believe I made a couple of valid observations. I am grateful to those who pointed out the jtag repair, specifically sending it for repair to mobiletechvideo. I know I can attempt the repair myself but for $50 it's well worth it for me to let a seasoned pro handle it.
One of my pet peeves is the "I am holier than you" attitude, you know the kind who goes around saying "I told you to research, make a backup nandroid, do md5 hash check on ALL your downloads, etc..." You know what, things have happened and now you're holding a brick in your hand due to whatever you did. No sense in kicking a man when he's down. How can you call it a help? And to those of you who clicked on the Thanks button to these kind of people, you know who you are, Fie on You!!!

Sir if your rant was directed at me I never said you were implying you were going to send it to samsung. I was only pointing out that that advice that someone else mentioned was not a good idea.
I am glad that you got in touch with mobiletechvideos to get it repaired. He has helped many people out with hard bricks around here. As for doing the repair yourself you need a riff box to do jtag and the cost of that is a lot more than what you ended up paying for Josh to do the service.

He flashed a kernel for a completely different phone. You don't need root privileges to do that. So, no, this doesn't contradict the xda position.
Buy a new gasoline fueled car, then go and put diesel fuel in it and destroy the engine. No dealer will cover that error under a warranty. You pay for your mistake and learn to double check next time.

While I highly respect Adam's opinion .. If you look at the attached post, you can see the statement copied directly from the Samsung website. Adam may be right ... Maybe not... But since it's Samsung we would be dealing with .. I would say the statement I made holds true. I'm not willing to fight my way to the supreme court to find out. If you are .. Let me know how it turns out. Also if you can gain root privileges without modifying or altering the electric circuitry .. Let me know that as well. Here's the link:

As far as xda .. If the official opinion is that rooting doesn't void the warranty .. I have to wonder ... If we do have a rooted user .. Say with a hardware issue that wants to claim warranty .. why are we not seeing everyone post that it's no problem .. Just send it back rooted. We see responses on how to unroot to claim warranty. Why bother? Why aren't the mods closing these threads stating that the unrooting is not needed? Additionally if I'm denied warranty, I'd venture to say that xda would not replace my phone or help me hire an attorney to fright Samsung.
