[Q]Soft Bricked - Motorola Droid RAZR

I soft bricked my droid razr by restoring a back up session and then it wouldnt get passed the "M" motorola logo. Any suggestions on what I should say if i take it to verizon to try to get it replaced since i preordered it. Also is there any way to fix it with back up files? Thanks for your help cause this sucks major nuts

I went to them and said that battery died , i plugged it in and went to sleep, when i got up the screen was like that. they took 1.5 hours trying to "fix" it but then did give me new phone

It's exactly what you should do when you brick an unrecoverable phone...
Anyway, this is the wrong section!

And that's why companies have crap warranties. Because people like you keep taking advantage of them when, after breaking their phones because they have no idea WTF they're doing, they even don't have the balls to take responsibility for their mistakes and try to pass it off as someone else's fault.

Whatever dude, if the companies weren't such assholes and lock the bootloader i would have had to do it.

Lol, it's always someone else's fault, right? The big bad motorola must kicked down your door and made you buy their phone at gunpoint. Did they touch you in your naughty parts too?

Wow guys, relax. Hopefully a lesson has been learned: it's not safe to dink around right now w/o an sbf file.

Motorola left the bootloader unlocked but Verizon locked it. Stop being dumb on the internet because you can.
I'm still waiting for the kinks to be ironed out before I root

+1 tired of people exploiting the system.

This is why Motorola locks the bootloader.

You guys don't realize how much a company makes off of you and furthermore how a company cares about you at all if that. The guys that keep doing the "right" thing go ahead and keep living life doing the "right" thing. Your are then 100X more likely to get ****ed and then they'll make more money off you good for them. Do you ever think about how they outsource all the US jobs to foreign countries for cheap labor and then sell to us 1000% more then what it cost them. So you must think that's right? Whatever I'm going to **** the big companies every chance I get and trust me it won't affect them.

Was rooting worth it?

For the whole month of waiting for S-off the only thing that was going on in here was people complaing and bashing other people. Well now that we have S-off it seems every thread is someone having problems with there phone after they rooted it. It seems to me this is why sprint and htc dont want us toying with these phones. Rooting a phone is suppose to make it better correct? It seeme to me its making the phones worst

welcome to rooting for me
YES its worth it 1000000000%
The forum is usually a place for questions, consumption & troubleshooting. I can post a thread about how happy I am if anyone cares. : p

And we would have less if people will read more thread or the whole description of how to root and what really is

Yea there were some minor problems before root but now look...people losing 4g not being able to send and recieve messages. Web not working. Some batteries got better some peoples phones wont turn on at all lol. But the funny thing is. All these problems people are having from rooting if they dont get fixed there gona go into sprint store complaining.

I dunno, the "no calls/txt/data" is a problem that is hit-or-miss when you do a hands-free-activation....root or not. It happened to me, took me under 2 minutes to have fixed by Sprint, who did it happily.
People losing 4G? I don't think this network is robust enough to blame that on root...and even if that is in an area with a rock solid 4G signal I still think there may be some user intervention at play that isn't the fault of getting s-off all by it self.
The funky "turning on, or not, or plugged in, or not, or take out battery, or sdcard, or both, or not" problems were there from the begining...I used to think it was only certain phones, but, I think it's all phones in certain conditions. Being s-off and rooted gives us the ability to put the phone into more conditions where that may or may not happen.
...and as far as battery performance is concerned it's nearly impossible to prove that it ISN'T user/application related. I'm not saying it definitely IS their fault, but, it's impossible to prove that...so many conditions vary for your phone so frequently every day even if yours do not that battery life claims are nearly impossible to prove and impossible to refute based on any changed variable all by itself....not to mention a near 100% chance of someone else reporting the exact opposite condition.
...aside from my data going slow after hands-free-activation (which is fixed in 2 minutes) I have experienced none of these problems after rooting...okay, I take that back, I have experienced the "sometimes it turns on while plugged in, sometimes it doesn't"...but, it did that before s-off/root as well.
...and let's not forget that the s-off hack likely has nothing to do with these issues. I have the eng hboot...non-hacked. Just the way god intended. If it is from anything it would be from the rooting of the ROM, which I still doubt.
Honestly, compared to the initial period after the s-off/root exploits releases for other devices this doesn't seem out of the ordinary at all...and no offense meant, but, are you new to this?
EDIT: Oh yeah, to answer your question....yes, s-off and rooting were VERY worth it to me. Now bring on the AOSP
No way. I hate having a better phone

Oh, I dont have any insurance on my new 3D phone.
Two words: User error. The problems you see are because people do not know what they are doing. Simple as that. Rooting your phone does nothing but give you permission to be able to do what you want to do with "your" phone.

Yeah, that's a really good point. I think that Sprint in general has probably been taking in a lot of new users, likely mostly smartphone users, because of the unlimited data thing...and the fact that Sprint actually has the most compelling collection of smartphones right this second IMHO. Sadly I'm thinking about jumping ship since this signal is just useless to me in most places now, and that's to say nothing of the over-loaded network.
...not to mention the droves of E4G defectors who were following the developers, and the larger and more frequent droves of defectors from every phone from the last generation that want the developer support that the E4G had but they definitely did not see...and then there are all of the people who finally got off of their contract from Heros and Moments from when they were still hot items....
...so, yeah, there is just so many goddamned people in here that I'd be surprised if there weren't more complaints on average. Contrast this to the NookColor forum where there are far more actual tricky problems but nobody blames the root method for them missing a step or not understanding a process...not to mention how god damned civil it is around there.

To me it was worth it. However I've noticed many issues are because folks don't read, can't follow instructions, make changes without knowing WHAT they are doing.
Sorry but if you don't know what changes you're making, what issues they cause, how to fix, how to undo what you screwed up, then they shouldn't be rooting, flashing and changing settings.
By "you" I don't necessarily mean you, but more of a "folks in general".

And really?... basing the success of something on a DEVELOPERS forum's Q&A section?
I can pull up every single phones Q&A section and get just as many, probably more issues in the general dates of when they where first rooted/cracked/jailbroken.
Soooooo, chill buddy.

Lol I'm like the first one to brick it... congrats to me with a dead metal brick...
was playing with the temp root (tool and script) so just remind everyone there
are still risks associated
basically i got temp root, then after firing up titanium backup and backed up all my apps it crashed, then super user started crashing, it's stuck in forever boot loop, master reset will just shut down the machine lol i'll probably take it back since just got it 2 days ago

That's not S-Off (if it were, it would say 's-off' not 'unlocked'). Also, by taking HTC's unlock you voluntarily void your warranty, so I dunno if Tmob will be helpful...

I hope T-Mobile will help you.
By unlocking the boot loader, you informed HTC that you voluntarily voided you warranty.
Those posts in the dev forum are extremely dangerous, both the bootloader unlock and temp root ones. The unlock being the most dangerous. I am grateful for the brave souls, that risk their device everyday, to help everyone.
However, until there is a method to restore a device to that "factory-fresh" state, people are playing Russian Roulette with their devices.
I am sending my best wishes your way though. Let's hope for a loophole.
Thanks, I just got a new phone. I walked in when the t-mobile retail manager was on an asshole attitude, so I just "attempted" to turn off the phone, he didn't even power it on, he just charged me a $50 restocking fee, I'd pay that instead of taking my chances of not being able to return it FOREVER, plus square trade deductible is the same anyway... so yeah now I got a new phone and I'm happy as ever,
Learn from this my friend, and spread the gospel to others.
Thou shalt not unlock the bootloader using HTC's method.
Thou shalt let people with more experience than thine self test new methods for anything.
If thou does not have extensive experience with development, thou shalt not do anything to thine device, unless there is a foolproof method to recover the device.

Am I the only one annoyed by this. Your brand new to android and attempted rooting after reading next to nothing on xda. Once you bricked your phone, which was inevitable considering your complete lack of preparation, you cheated the system and saddled HTC with brick.
They won't continue being friendly with the dev community if they keep getting screwed by idiots who think there are no consequences to jumping the gun.

My thoughts exactly...OP is dumb for jumping in ****-deep. OP is a twat for lying/stealing/cheating TMo. Take responsibility for your actions...I cannot count how many times idiots did this in the Vibrant forum.
calm down folks. While agree that the OP prob should have waited a bit, how does someone gain experience unless they try? Maybe be a little nicer instead of just outright insulting someone for their inexperience. Were you guys all born with complete knowledge of how to root a phone, did it by instinct? I doubt it. lay off the guy.
Secondly, cheating T-mo? like they don't make money hand over fist off all of us anyway? besides, for that guys $50 restocking fee, all T-Mo did was sell another phone so, they make twice as much money, and they get a phone back to recondition and sell as either a refurb or give it to asurion so that they can use it as an insurance replacement.
Be [email protected]$%@#g nice on these forums people, otherwise people are gonna get burned out on doing stuff like this and there will be no development at all on anything.
People with no experience need to wait until the more experienced make things clear and stable. As for the cheating, etc, it is fraud. Just because we feel that companies rape us does not make it legal to steal. That is all I will say on it.
Applaud the successes, cast stones at poor morality.

A New Melvin?

To do as Litetaker requested I am starting a new thread regarding MischiefsMommy's information that she posted regarding that she "may" have an unlocked bootloader and/or some kind of software that can help us to unlock our phones.
I personally think this is way too good to be true, but I think that this is important enough to start a discussion in a new thread about.
I do not want any childish banter between angry parties in this thread , but I do want to know how everyone feels about this information.
IMHO I am hoping and praying that she is right and that some tech at VZW sent her something awesome, something good has to happen to the Motorola community eventually right?
Fire away....
Don't get too off topic Ash....

Yeah, it is definitely a possibility that that is the case. The whole reason I posted this is because it has been so long since we heard anything from either of them.
Perhaps they have been PMing instead of going at it in a thread since it was such a heated discussion before.
I don't understand why people are even giving this the time of day. If we get an unlocked bootloader its not going to come from an idiot user who claims to have got it from verizon. Your just feeding the trolls here. Just ignore those comments and move on. Secondly, people are getting a little too emotional about a phone. Someone said we have been burned as a community and we don't want to get hurt again. Really? If your getting your feelings hurt over a phone you may have some other issues you need to take a look at in your life other then a unlocked bootloader.

true, but I'm also thinking that this may be possible, that this could be the way to unlock the bootloader without having to buy another phone. Maybe i'm being too optimistic about this, but that's just how I feel, and how I was raised. Maybe this has to do with me being screwed over by a girl I was in love with because she moved onto her "high school sweetheart," and me wearing my heart on my sleeve, but that's just life. I'm trying to get the best out of my phone until I can upgrade to the GNex or the next best thing, but as of right now, I'm going to see this to the end and if that means I'm going to get hurt again "over a phone" then so be it. I'm going into this to optimistic, too involved, but oh well, that's me not you.

I think it was me who said that. Granted I exaggerated it a little. But I definitely felt notably dissapointed by Melvin when he came trolling here. After all, I paid $200 of my hard earned cash for this turd of a phone and at that price I could have done a LOT of stuff. So, sorry for having feelings for the $200 of my money! sorry, I guess this seems like a bit of petty quarrel and is exactly opposite of what the OP asked us to do but I felt your comment needs some perspective and explanation.
Moreover, I guess given that you gave a Gnex, you don't seem to understand the pains of users with unlocked bootloaders!!!

Why do we need a thread dedicated to information everyone is almost 99% sure is false? I'd she had the tools and really wanted to prove something she would give us hard evidence. You don't walk your ass in here claiming you have the key to making our device infinitely better and just dance around answers like she did.
Sad we need to port her in the spotlight to do so. She is trolling us. Leave her be until she puts up.

Yeah I'm not sure how I missed this either, but reading through her posts she seems to be extremely confused about things. I'm not sure how one can be aware of or unlock their phone and not know how to get a screenshot app.
Just going out on a limb here, but I think she is really just talking about the Razr and is just confused or maybe thinks that what will happen with the Razr will apply to the dx2.

Because of that 1% nobody knows if she is right or wrong. NOBODY. You cannot say she is wrong without knowing the facts yourself and why not hold onto that glimmer of hope, if you read the original post I did ask for opinions, but I did not ask for your opinion on the validity of threads.
I see that you agree that this is most likely false, but it was taking up a lot of space in a different thread and I for one am interested enough to try to find out more.
I told everyone I am willing to attempt all of the tests once the soak/actuall update come out so if we can unlock the bootloader before that even happens I would be in heaven, I hate Moto Blur....

You are correct, I am hoping she is right and that it is an exe and we can somehow apply it to the X2.

That's exactly what I thought. Id like to know how and why she got the unlock from Verizon and not Motorola, cause correct me if I'm wrong but Verizon does nothing in the development and design side if things.

Lol man I did not read back that far this morning. I so wish that was true. With that being said I do not think there is any way in hell we would get all this by end of the month. My wife's bionic would get it first. Like I said if it ever happens it will be when I am onto my next phone. I have till October but been watching eBay I might snag a gnexus if the price is right then no contract.

I sent her a PM this morning, hopefully we get an answer sometime today.
"I'm getting too old for this ****".
Its been almost a year since release and they've been yanking us around. The only way I'll have an unlocked phone anytime soon is if I get a free one from my complaint to BBB.

Dunno who that coulda been
I may have gone a little overboard with the flaming, but she hit a nerve. Not getting into it again, just wanted to apologize.
Nah, I'm kidding. Good riddance.
Even ignoring the insults between myself and her, I don't think it's debatable at this point whether or not she's a troll (or equally possible: horribly, horribly confused).
I think my summary from that thread summed it up pretty efficiently.
theredvendetta said:
So let me recap.
We have an illiterate Droid Razr owner posting on the Droid X2 forums about talking on the phone with a Verizon representative about an unlocked bootloader (even though Verizon doesn't do jack **** with android) for their phone, which is a Razr, even though she claims it will work for an X2 (actually she hasnt, she just posts about it in the X2 forums. The ****?). This person tells us that the unlock our phones, and it will come alongside an ICS distro at the end of April.
Okay, cool, I didn't believe a word of it, but that at least is a possibility worth considering. That is, until they posted more information.
So as we ask her more about why she's in our forums and why the Verizon rep would have this information (keep in mind, a rep would never have this information if even Motorola reps don't), and she drops a bombshell: she's got an unlocked bootloader. OUT OF ****ING NOWHERE. Not ONCE before this did she care to mention she was unlocked. This contradicts everything she said before this; why does she have it now if it's coming at the end of April.
Alright, let's move on.
So apparently, she found this bootloader unlock on the Verizon site. Again, this contradicts her own story in more ways than I care to mention. Not only that, but Verizon would NOT be in possession of such a tool. It's not as if they even know how to work with Android; they are a service provider!
And finally, she presents us with a file she claims she found on the Verizon site (which she did not) and that it will allow us to unlock our bootloader by entering (this is what I could decipher) a series of ones and then a string of 7 random numbers and letters.
K. I don't know why anyone is still trying. This is worthless. It seems I'm the only voice of reason whenever people try to troll us. This is what, the third time? Fourth? I can't remember.

It is annoying that you already began something I asked the community not to do on the first page of the freaking thread.

Are you serious you post a thread asking for peoples opinions on this and then you want me to not post because you don't like my opinion, or because it isn't what you intended for people to post? What you posted in your thread left this open for discussion. My opinion is its complete BS. Like someone said if we get an unlocked boot loader someone will have the tool or the means and post it. Not dance around answers and complain about migraines. Why even feed into it?
Also yes I do have a gnex but I still have my x2 and use it frequently at home. I too want an unlocked bootloader.

Hiding water damage for warranty - bleach?

I was planning on bring my SGS2 to the repair center, since its been giving me so much trouble lately, unfortunatley i dropped it in water before i could get there
As far as i can see there are 2 water indicators on the phone - on the phone itself to the right of the battery, and also one on the battery.
I actually used a Q-tip and bleach and both are no longer red, but are there any more anywhere else on the phone? And are there any other ways they will be able to tell it has water damage?
Are you really asking the forum for help in scamming AT&T for you? Take responsibility for yourself.

O god forbid someone scam ATT!!!!!!:crying: We should all be so careful to treat this honest and ethical company with nothing but respect. They get what they give after all.
Ive been paying for insurance for 2 or 3 years now, have never made a claim, and they raise the deductible for a claim to 200 dollars? Screw you ATT. The phone was faulty before it got water in it. Im saving someone else the trouble of getting this device refurbed, because you know ATT would just repackage this phone and give it to some poor SOB.
Whether AT&T is an evil company or not is not the issue. This is not the forum to be asking for help to scam them or anyone else.

Hey genius, it's only a scam if by flashing a ROM you mess the phone up and then try to get AT$T to replace it. What you are trying to do is get AT$T to pay for your clumsiness. Fine, go right ahead and try, but trying to enlist people in here to be your accomplice in that scam is against the forum rules. This thread is destined to be closed.
Don't even try it. They check more than the indicators. The check corrosion on solder points etc......... they will know.

I dont know, I doubt they will even bother to check anything besides the obvious. They make so much money on these phones, the amount it would cost to pay someone to analyze what happened to a phone wouldnt pay off.
You don't deserve help. Scamming is not supported here, a mod will most likely shut this down...so inb4lock?

There is a distinct and significant difference between returning software to stock to enable a user to return the phone for hardware defects that were not caused by the user (failed usb ports, power buttons, etc.) and trying to return a device that was physically damaged by careless use/abuse. The reason deductibles go up is because of this type of behavior.

like i said the phone was failing before it got water damaged. Disagree with you on the second reason. the deductible went up because of ATT's greed. I can outright buy this phone off contract for not much more than their deductible, plus what i pay every month - it doesnt make any sense.

How to trick Verizon?

So this is going to sound odd, but hear me out. I like many of you got the ME7 update. On sunday I tried rerooting and reflashing. Soft bricked my phone. Used ODIN to re-install ME7 firmware. All runs fine. In the midst of this however I panicked and called verizon for a replacement under warranty. I made the claim that "I unplugged my phone during the ME7 update" and that's how it bricked. If the phone they send me is MDK can I send my ME7 back? Should I "re-brick" my ME7 and send it back to them or just do a data wipe and re package it? Would they be able to tell?

I mean if your device does not have any faults why are you getting a replacement? I understand you requested before you realized it is actually ok. You came here asking for advice on how to trick a company that is honoring a defective device that actually is not defective. So yeah send back your replacement or find a legit defect with your device. Sounds like an integrity issue to me.

Why be underhanded about your character? Your title is how to trick Verizon? What this really is though is a hey look at me guys I commited fraud to replace a device that I knowingly and willingly violated my warranty with and had verizon send me a replacement device only to find out my original device wasnt broken after all. To add to the character comment even though you've fixed your device you're still contemplating continuing with the fraud by purposely bricking a device that you repaired...
I think this whole thread speaks volumes about your character or lack there of. You posted this on the internet. You screwed up the device. You fixed it. Own it.

The one thing I hate about the XDA forums is the rudeness of some people. It's completely up to the OP regarding his conscience in the matter. I will give you my opinion:
I have never read about anybody getting back charged for returning phone that was modded / rooted. Those of us that have been long time VZW customers have seen the decline of trust with them. I know it's too late for you to change course now but in the future you should have no regrets if you decide for another equipment swap. With the root / unlock bounty reaching towards $6K you can ask any of them how they feel. VZW sneaked in the so called OTA update with minor improvements overall; and completely locking down the phone.
It's up to you in the end but I wouldn't worry..... You would be the first casualty.
Edit: The title of your thread didn't help matters either

I agree with you completely, it's on the person. The question was how do I trick verizon....so my answer was don't. If you don't want the feedback, don't ask. No rudeness was intended. I am fairly sure the lack of ownership on mistakes is frowned upon in the XDA community. Oh well, my opinion was to be honest. Enjoy your decision
Nothing rude was said to the op. The fact of the matter is that the very premise of this thread was to seek advice on warranty fraud, which is illegal.

It probably wouldnt even matter if you sent back the "broke" one back fixed, they probably don't open each phone package to verify it functions, probably just check for water damage and cracks
Alright, alright, I dug my own grave on this one. I don't want to resort to such tactics but like everyone else I'm a little peeved with Verizon so I'm contemplating doing things I normally wouldn't do. Not that it's an excuse but making sweeping judgments about my character is a little overboard. It's not like I sneak out at night punching babies or anything. I'm annoyed that I was hoodwinked into an update that prevented me from modding my phone. I'm sure I'm not the only one. I just saw a potential way out and wanted to know if anyone had any experience with getting charged for sending back a rooted phone. If you think I should just be honest, say so. This whole "you lack integrity," stuff is B.S. If Verizon had any integrity I wouldn't even be contemplating pulling a stunt like this.

Here's the deal, no one thinks you are a bad person. Strike me down, but verizon is not lacking integrity here. Never once was this device advertised as being unlocked or unlockable and they have never said they support modding. If this was a nexus that they locked the bootloader on then yes, problem. I said be honest, my point was this decison is an integrity one, not you lack integrity. If you wanted to know if will VZW charge you for returning a rooted phone, that would have been a more appropriate question and thread, not how do I trick Verizon. Lesson learned, not beating up on you.
The OP owned it, he said he was sending the replacement device back. Good for him. Like others I wasnt trying to come across as being rude as much as appalled at the blatant disregard of personal responsibility. At the same time posting this type of title and thread up on XDA is kinda asking for it, which again, the OP has acknowledged.
We know we hate the carriers locking devices down. Locking them actually presents more of a risk of bricking than unlocked devices that you can always flash back to stock. Almost every thread here has something to the effect of "by following such and such your warranty is now void and we are not responsible", come on, we're registered here at XDA, we all know this. If we want an open device get a dev or nexus device and get an extended warranty or insurance option, they're out there.
Congrats to the op for staying classy, your choices are your choices and you'll live with whatever choices you decide to make.
And as we all should know by now, dont post on the interwebz if you dont want to hear what people, trolls and non-trolls alike have to say...

Think of it like this. What do you use your phone for? To talk on the phone. Send messages. Email. Take pictures. Surf the web. Play games. Watch videos. Video chat. The other 20% is customization. If this was the year 1999 you would only be able to use your phone to make calls send messages and half-assed surf the web. Your phone is used for those types of things. Just because an update happened to a phone doesn't mean that you cannot use your phone to do those things it only limits you from updating to a different ROMS. ATT Verizon and them paid the money so they could have the locked boot loaders for the phones. If you didn't want restrictions then you wouldn't have used the upgrade you had and went and paid full price for the GPE s4 or other phone. Not saying that I like having a locked boot loader but since Obama came into office this is how its going to be because he's UN Americanized. But there are people working hard to get the boot loader unlocked it just takes time. You can still root it. Just my 2 cents
