I have a few questions I hope somebody can shed some light on regarding images and videos...
Problem 1 - Dropbox Image Resolution
Firstly, it seems that Dropbox auto-uploads scales down the photos? Is there a way to stop this?
I noticed because my images are always sideways because of how I hold my phone taking pics, but then in my dropbox folder they were all portrait, so I checked image resolution and they are indeed smaller?
Problem 2 - Photo distortion/corruption from Windows File Transfers
Also, when copying photos from the phone to computer via USB (MTP), many of the pictures become corrupted. By corrupted I mean really strange lines across the photos and colour distortions. The actual pictures taken are fine because on the phone display in the Gallery they show perfectly. It is just when copying to PC they seem to corrupt. The photos are a mixture of some on the memory card and some on the internal storage and the problem happens with both..
This has happened to me on random photos (I transferred 150 and probably 30 were corrupt). I have tried this on two computers, one that has Kies installed and the Samsung Galaxy S3 Toolkit installed, and another computer that has no drivers installed apart from the ones Windows installs.
The file transfers were using Windows Explorer. I also tried with Kies and had the same problem.
Importantly: When trying a second or third time to copy the corrupt files, they copy fine and the problem disappears.
I noticed the Dropbox problem because I thought, well the photos are already uploaded so I can just copy from there without any photo problems, but they were all smaller resolution?
Problem 3 - HD Video Stutters
And my final problem. I copied a video taken on the phone to the PC (taken at 1080 full HD) it is a couple of minutes long in broad daylight. When viewing on the phone, quality is perfect. However when playing on the laptop (Core i5, 4GB RAM, Sony Vaio) the video has some stutters and distortion/corrupt bits.. it seems to play fine for a few seconds and then the video goes all distorted, then fine, then more distortion?
The problem appears on videos saved both on the phone internal storage, and on videos saved to memory card (class 6 SanDisk microSD)..
I have plenty of space and RAM available on the phone, it is only a week old, I have setCPU set to use Lazy CPU governor, using SIO scheduler, and I have dynamic hotplug disabled and all 4 cores running. Phone is rooted, with CWM touch..
Has anyone faced a similar problem or have any suggestions? What is the optimum way to transfer my photos to computer? Should I store photos and videos on internal storage or on the memory card?
Thanks
mine is like this, it should be 2mb and its only 333kb

only i did cut and paste and now left with nothing. is there way to recover it ?
That is a perfect example of what happens to my photos...
As for recovering, not too sure. NEVER CUT things you don't want to lose. COPY then delete after.

Never had any corruption at all ever .
You may have something else working in the background during copy ????

Do you mean working in the background on the phone or the laptop?
I was transferring some background pics to my phone last night and the connection kept dropping and files became corrupt, many many files became corrupt and unusable..
This happens in both MTP mode and the "Camera mode"..
I don't understand what is going wrong.. My phone is pretty much stock apart from my NEAK kernel.. I don't have any apps using the USB..
Don't know why the files get corrupted the first couple of times you transfer the, but for automatic transfer to Dropbox, Google, and my web domain I use FolderSync. Seems to do the job without compressing any pics/videos.

Thanks I will use that app for dropbox sync, looks awesome!
I just checked and there is no compression of my Dropbox Camera Upload syncs at all. Maybe it's your ISP? Are you using 3G to do this? Orange compress and alter the quality of images downloaded on webpages over 3G. I know because I've only just switched to Three and Orange used to do this all the time to all 3G connections.

You are 100% sure that your photos taken at 8MP remain at 8MP after using Dropbox Camera-Upload option?
Standard dropbox upload should remain at 8MP, but the camera-upload function that automatically uploads photos as you take them, that compresses them I think?
Do you experience any of the USB problems I ask about?

About a month ago I was transferring files to/from my Amaze 4G, and then I disconnected it from my computer (without clicking "Eject" in Windows or disabling USB storage in Android) and after that, every time I would open an album, a few photos would disappear. A dozen here, 20 there, until my >1000 photos (carried over from previous phones) were GONE.
I removed the memory card and put it in my computer, and used an un-delete program to retrieve them intact and unharmed. I guess the file table got corrupted or something. I did a factory reset on my phone, reformatted the SD card, put all my files back, and went on my merry way.
Just a few minutes ago, I was copying all of my photos from the phone. I made sure the click "eject hardware" in Windows, and then selected "Charge Only" on the phone, disconnected it, and then, just to make sure it re-mounted properly in Android, I un-mounted and re-mounted the card via the settings page. When I open up the Album app (Which was presumably running in the background during this whole operation), several hundred photos are missing.
I plugged the phone back in, deleted the photo directories, and reloaded them from the backup on my laptop, making sure that the Albums app was closed. I then re-opened the Album app after properly disconnecting the phone, and about 600 photos were still missing. I closed the app and reopened it, and only a couple hundred were missing. I went back to the album list and then re-opened the camera album, and fewer photos were missing. Wash, rinse, and repeat, until all of the photos had reappeared.
This whole ordeal has left me concerned about the safety of my files. Ever since the first one I have often opened and re-opened the photo album to see if the number of photos decreases each time I open it, and I've had no issues other than the ones mentioned.
Any ideas on a cause/prevention for this issue?

Maybe the album software wasn't given enough time to create all the thumb pics it uses for browsing for the 1000+ pictures you just added? It would take even longer if you had vids in there too.

That would explain the second incident, but in the first one, the photos were actually deleted; when I used an undelete program they showed up as "_mage_210" and the like.

It has happened now with two different cards, one of which I'd been using for about a year with no problems, the other straight out of the package.

Not in a usable state. However, I've had no problems with drive/card corruption from my computer.
Failing the faulty computer, do you think the phone is faulty, and should be replaced?

If you can eliminate the computer as a variable then yes I'd assume the phone has a defect.
You've already said you tried two different microSD cards. One new and one old.
So that variable has been eliminated.
Only two left to go. One you can do with relative ease at a friends or even a internet cafe.
The other requires waiting for a replacement.
I would try and isolate the issue to one element first before I sent off for a new phone.
In any case if you'd rather just send off for a new one and be done with it then go for it.
Just make sure you test the new one and see if the problem persists.
Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions!
This problem seems to not happen if I make sure to kill the HTC/Android Albums app before connecting the phone to the computer, so it's usable for the time being. Once I go into the next payment cycle (I used up all my high-speed data, and I don't want to attempt a reload on 2G) I'll take it into the store and see if they'll swap it out, just to be safe.
So no-one else has had this problem?
I first saw this on my wife's S3 and now I have the same thing on my Note 2. Whenever I go into the Gallery app, it is so extremely slow. I thought it was building indexes or something, but my Thunderbolt wasn't this slow. I have searched around and can't find anything.
I do have images on an extSD card, but even before I put the card in the pics I took on camera were slow to come up. I can use other apps like quic pic but I don't think S-pen works with other apps.
Anyone else seen this?
EDIT: It appears the S-Pen works fine in quic pic. I was able to select and copy to clipboard just fine. I would still like to know why Gallery is so slow though.
hmm I'd call mine quite fast. I have 42 local pictures already and it that album and facebook ones instantly and when I click local, the pictures all pop right up instantly. Have you noticed reads/writes from your memory being slow with anything else?

My phone overall is very fast. It is just the gallery. The fact that I saw it on my wife's S3 made me wonder. I even moved her pics off of her extSD card and onto her internal memory. Then I reformatted her card. I also reformatted my card in the phone before putting the pics back on it. Quic Pic works like a champ, so I believe it has to be Gallery.
No issues here with opening gallery, pics taken from phone or photos on memory card. Also my s3 was fast.
Yep, mine too. I have a lot on my card, when i open the gallery it shows a bunch of gray squares that should be the folder names.it takes forever to show thumbnails for some reason. Never had this on my S3
I have 6000+ pictures separated into 50+ albums all stored on my 64gb xdhc and its fast. for an album of more than 600 pics, the gray boxes turn to thumbnails quick enough to keep up with my scrolling.
I'm in the same boat as the OP.... It takes quite a long time to load up my pictures in my gallery. Quite annoying...
use a ultra high speed sd card an it will help with gallery speed. i have a 64gb sandisk that reads 50mb/s...

I have had the same problem since owning the S3 and now the GN2. I have about 6gb of photos on my internal storage and a couple gb on my sd card.
I have been able to figure out that it's something with my home network. Try to turn off Wifi and then open Gallery on all 3 of my Sammy phones the gallery is instantly fast.
PS Someone also told me to disable Tag Buddy and Face Tag as well.
Motorola is similar yo this except that the moto gallery pinch room is choppy. Quick pic fixes. Its something about the ui that makes it drag along on the gallery. Hopefully they address it because my old gs2 didn't really have that issue.
Same issues with gallery sometimes
I've noticed some slowdown on the gallery but mostly when other apps try to access it.
Like if i try to look at the gallery from picsay or something.
I notice the camera folder shows up right away but it hangs on the other folders.
I have it showing all my facebook photos too. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.
And I have noticed its quite hit or miss. Sometimes its instant sometimes it hangs.
It is quite weird when the phone is so fast.
I would love to know what is causing it.

I haven't found a way. I went into facebook sync and unchecked "sync gallery" and changed the gallery sync interval to never, then went and cleared all data from the gallery but it went through and downloaded them all over again.
Did you try changing the sd speed? I switched from the default 128k to 2048 and my galleries load as fast as I can scroll

I too have this issue. It would be worth trying what LordRalh3 mentions. Dont know if this is going to help. I had several pictures on internal memory until I remembered to install my external 32gb card, it is slow both ways.
I had the same issue, and found that gallery was caching a ton of data. Over 2 gigs the first day! I cleared it, and again the next day it began caching data again. I have resorted to disabling the app, and I am in the process of wiping to see if that helps. I will let you know what happens.
Stock gallery is bull****. Better is quickpic i use it nearly 1 year
Wiping did not help. Gallery still as slow as molasses. I will report back on cached data. How would I go about changing the sd speed?
I just changed the sd speed to 2048. There was no difference. This is really annoying. I turned off syncing with picasa, facebook, google +. Im not sure what else could cause such a slow down.
Today I got my new GS4, and was going to make sure all my stuff was backed up from my GS2 before I turned on my new phone. I went into "accounts" from contacts and checked the box for "auto-sync app data" (this is the only thing I did, period, since I was viewing my photos only about an hour earlier) and then connected my phone to the PC so I could back up all my photos. When I did, all the photos "loaded" but I could not actually view them, merely their file name. So I unmounted from the PC and went into gallery on my phone, only to find every single photo, both internal and on sd was replaced with a grey box and I cant view them. I have since reconnected to my PC, and now all those folders are completely empty. If I go into gallery on my phone, it still shows my folder names with all these grey photos, but when I use a file explorer to try and view them, nothing, 0 files just like on the PC. I have NO IDEA how this could have happen, and the only link I have to something going wrong was the auto-sync box I checked. I had about 6 months of photos I didn't back up, and some VERY important and irreplaceable pics I can't get back. I was hoping someone my have an idea as to what happen/how to recover my pics. I have gone through multiple folders, and literally every single .jpg file is gone! This includes all pics taken using the camera, any screenshots I had, all photos saved from texts and websites! EVERYTHING!!!! PLEASE HELP ME GET MY MEMORIES BACK!!!!!

Define "loaded". The sdcard mounts like a hard drive, then you copy them off. Not sure how you screw that up.

When I say loaded, I mean all the file names showed up in the folder, but I could not open the picture to view it. So it looked like they were there, but the file extension didn't show as .jpg and when trying to view them it said something about how microsoft viewer was unable to display image. I never actually attempted to do the copy from phone to pc, so there was not an issue with a transfer, but something that happen prior to even connecting to the pc as far as I can tell. After disconnecting and reconnecting, however, the files don't even show as there, just says 0 files in folder when I open it. Also, its not just sd card, but literally every single file that had a .jpg extension is completely gone....this includes internal and sd, and everything from wallpapers, camera shots, pics from texts and web, everything!
You could try Disk Digger to recover the photos.
Thx for the disk digger recommendation! It was super tedious going thru over 9,000 pics of thumbnails n all kinds of bs, but I was able to get back most of my pics from the internal memory! Now just need to do it with the sd card.

Remove your external SD card and try to access the images through a card reader. Some Sammy devices have had issues playing nice with SD cards, and the resulting behavior can be similar to what you have experienced. Technical details can be found around d the web.
Guys . I am on the the latest official samsung leak from two days ago. everything seems to work fine for the most part. However i have this problem with Icons , emoticons and album artwork not only showing up in my photogallery but pretty much outnumbering my photos 2 to 1. It has gotten to the point where I am no longer synchronising my phone with my pc. my Music folder also has windows files that are not music just sounds that windows makes. today i formatted my external sd card and erased all music and pictures from my internal storage as well.. In reinstalled windows too because i have been seeing these things on my pc as well. i used a flash drive to put about 2 gigs of pictures and 6 gigs of music on both my phone and pc.at this point i thought i had cleaned everything up and that just not syncing would solve my issues until i looked at my dropbox and google plus and picasa accounts. in no time at all my pc was already putting icons and artwork with my pics.
I looked into this issue on other forums on xda . but this problem does not seem to have much of a solution. some say to put .nomedia files in the directories which i have my pics and music. others say that it doesnt work with ics or hc i havent seen any solution for jb. or I9300 or 4.2.2 . By the way I am using the external micro SD card to store pics and music. maybe thats the problem. I dont know. My question is Does anyone know how to fix this short of avoiding syncing with a pc and ditching cloud storage?

Well there isn't a sure shot solution. For the album arts, try embedding them directly to the mp3 files. That should help. And try not to use the stock gallery app. Use quickpic and hide pics you don't want to see.
.nomedia does work on JB, but I'm not sure that it does what you want.
It is used to hide pictures from the gallery, audio from the music player etc.
It's just a case of creating an emtpy file called ".nomedia".

I am in urgent need of help. I have a non-rooted Mate 20 Pro with a nano memory card. Today I noticed all my photos and videos are gone from the memory card.
All the folders are still there just empty, all my files and music is still there just my photos and videos are not.
I tried connecting it to a computer and the same thing. Empty folders,
I'm not sure what happened as they were all there earlier. I didn't use my phone or do anything out of the ordinary for this to happen.
Im on EMUI 10 currently. I took the memory card out and downgraded back to 9.1 to see if the software was the issue but same thing.
I also tried opening the files in different apps to see if they would show up but nothing.
My memory card still shows the same amount of memory being used as it did before.
I also tried to unhide folders, look into the safe but nothing!
At this point I am quite upset
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It is probably the most obvious assume you have rebooted?
Have you mistakenly ejected the card? If not try ejecting from settings and reinsert.
Are you using stock gallery viewer? Does it need update?
These are the most common/obvious actions, don't have anything else to add if tried and didn't work.

Yes, I have rebooted. I even unmounted it and reset the phone then put it back in and nothing.
I am using stock gallery, I believe it's already updated.
Weirdly all my files and music are still there along with the folders. Just my pictures and videos are gone. I looked to see if they were hidden but they're not. They won't show on the computer either.
I'm not sure what could have possibly happened. They were there in the morning and then they disappeared. I didn't take the card out or anything.
Are there apps that could somehow erase all your photos and videos if you install them. I can't think of anything else it could have been. I've never had any problems until now.
The newest thing I have done is update do EMUI 10 but even after the update everything was still there until the other day when they just disappeared on me.
Do you use Google Photos App? If Yes, see if you can find the missing photos and video with in Google Photos. Google Photos once uploaded will remove the local storage.

I tried. Nothing. There are some .hidden or .outside files in some of the folders. I tried to set it to show hidden files just in case but it still didn't pop up.
I'm going to try getting a nano card reader to see if maybe the phone is somehow doing something to the card. In the meantime I'm no longer using so no more damage gets done just in case.
Try sd card recovery, either on phone or on pc.
