Most Likely an S-OFF for HBOOT 1.58 will be (most likely) Released tomorrow.
So this means this new HBOOT is no big whoop. For Once.

Those guys are genius. Probably the same hack for 1.5
Wire trick has been confirmed working on hboot 1.58 already in multiple threads in the development section. Confused...

I have always wondered...why some people get s-off and some s-on and different versions of Hboot? anyone know?
its obvious what s-off and s-on does, but what are the differences between the Hboots? any advantages of one over another?

I don't know why some phones came with S-Off and the rest with S-On, but Hboot is kind of like the BIOS of a computer. Whenever there is an update, HTC will update the Hboot.
I have been running ViperROM Nightlies for a little bit but now I'm on MeanROM v2.6 ICS. Yes I am somewhat a newbert, for instance I have no clue what ENG HBOOT is. Someone care to shede some light.
Right now I'm on JuopunutBear's HBOOT 1.5050 (I believe that's what it is)
Any help would be much appreciated!
TIA!!!!!!!!!

Engineering hboot 1.04 is just an hboot that will accept more fastboot commands than the others will accept. It does not have a locked/unlocked banner and it was probably the first hboot for this device. If you want to give it a spin, here it is. Just rename this file to PG86IMG.zip and flash through the bootloader.

For cdma
As for the best one for sense ROMs, that depends. If you want to run GB and VM leak ICS ones, then hboot 1.4 or 1.5 our the eng hboot is fine. If you want to run an ICS ROM based on the new ota with the new kernel, you need hboot 1.58.

I was on freezas thread in the cdma dev section. I just did the wire trick to get S-OFF today and I would be super pissed if i messed it up. But if I upgrade to 1.58, would I still be S-OFF?
Yes. You keep s off. You can downgrade the hboot later if you wish
Hi,(First day with my 3D)
Since the same process is used to achieve S-Off on 1.50 and 1.58...
Is there any good reason to NOT update to 1.58 before I S-Off?
Thank you.

No.
Check out this guide if you are planning to get S-OFF. It will update your phone to the Sprint ICS 2.89.651.2 build, including hboot 1.58, before rooting and gaining S-OFF.

Links working now.
Going to read and see if it would be safe to take the ICS OTA in place of the RUU?
Thanks again.

The RUU is a more complete update for the 2.89.651.2 Sprint ICS build than the OTA, and I highly recommend using it if you want a solid base for rooting and S-OFF. Some people have had problems with the HTC unlock required for JuopunutBear S-OFF after taking the OTA, and the guide I linked requires the RUU.exe as a base.

well, to be quite honest I don't really know why you would want to update your hboot... hboot is different from most software in that sense, the higher the version the more problems you are likely to have with roms and kernels. bottom line, there's no advantage having hboot 1.5x to having 1.49.xxx

Totally agree the lower the hboot the least problems you will have, my phone is hboot 1.49 and people with 1.53 are having issues galore

I am already S-Off, but it is from lazy panda. Should i switch to Dirty Racun, or try and retrieve S-Off through Dirty Racun? Are there any benefits, or any differences between the two? Also if I were to switch to Dirty Racun what would be the benefits, if there are any?

No benefit at all...keep what you got.

When you are s-off that's it. You are s-off. No reason to s-on just to s-off by another method.
i think the only difference would be the version of U.IO's HBOOT you're on and you can flash those to update if need be. but i can't tell you what benefit there is if any to doing that. best bet would be to go to their site and jump on IRC and ask them the specific question, (should i flash a newer hboot)
There is no benefit to updating hboot, its really just security and future proofing for oems. If there are any future hardware revisions like different lcds or the like, the hboot may be updated across the entire line of phones but its not like firmware or os updates.

i'm inclined to agree with you on those points, yet my cynicism tells me if there's no difference between them then why does U.IO have multiple versions for our one device?
Because they patched the original soff exploit for hboot 1.12 with 1.15. Then hboot was updated to 1.19 but that was mainly a maintenance type release. They also removed access to boot partition with hboot 1.15

i know that's why HTC did it, but why would Unlimited.IO ?? why not just have HBOOT 12.12.12.12 "HornyGroundMole" and use it to patch overtop of 1.12, 1.15, or 1.19? or am i not recalling properly that they came out with an updated version for LazyPanda after their original release? or did they do it and they only did it for the sake of changing the version number and no actual code was updated?
The original release was an early beta they refined it, this new soff is only for hboots 1.15 and 1.19. It's a different exploit then what was used for 1.12
