Currently have a rooted XMP SK17i that has a bootloader that I cannot unlock meaning I miss out on all of the kernels. I presume not, but does this mean that I cannot flash any kernel at all?
My main question is that since I have a locked bootloader, I need a ROM that is good on the RAM etc. Currently that is the Real ICS r5.1 which I am thinking of updating however I was wondering if anyone had any quicker ICS ROMs that were good on the CPU and RAM. Ones that are just as good on locked bootloaders as unlocked ones.
Any help is appreciated
Rom for unlocked bootloader is always better than rom for locked bootloader because it can utilize all the power of a costum kernel. I would suggest you to try Real ICS r5.2 (it's the newest version), because it has some kind of ram management script running. I am on locked bootloader too, and I use Real ICS r5.2 with no problems
Real ICS r5.2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1707876
Real ICS r2 LITE: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739569
Both of these work on Locked bootloader, but I would suggest you to go with the first one.
Cheers

How do I go about updating from 5.1 to 5.2?
Do I need to clear everything and then flash the new ROM again?

You should be on ics first to flash it. And did you wipe all or just the necessary things? Flash the stock rom again like in this tutorial.

Okay you have cwm recovery. To flash ics roms, you should be on ics first. So just root and upgrade like explained here.
If you are on rooted ics, download the zip of the rom and copy to sd card.
Boot in cwm and select backup/resotre -> backup and back up your current rom.
Now you must look in the installation tutorial, what has to be formatted (like system or data or just do a factory reset, that's explained).
Now choose "install zip from sd card" -> "choose zip" and choose the zip file to install it. After installation normally just reboot.
Make sure before installing, you downloaded the right zip file for your phone model. If there is no specific zip to download, there should be an installation assitangt built in, called "Aroma installer". There you navigate with the volume keys and the home button to select. Just choose your phone model and that the bootloader is locked.
After that everything should be fine

Yes so try flashing the stock rom like in the tutorial from the link I posted. Or are you able to enter cwm? Then only restore the backup!
How do I install CWM? cause x-parts wont install it properly. I asked for root permission and I allowed it but after restart no CWM upon pressing volume down

I've got a problem, but I'm not sure if it's been addressed anywhere else on here, I've searched through several pages. I've found a situation that was similar, but not the same. So I'm putting it out there, and hoping someone will solve it:
I've got a Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman (WT19i)
I rooted my phone, unlocked it's bootloader, and flashed a ROM; everything went well until it rebooted. Now I'm stuck at the point where the "Sony Ericsson" logo is shown, i've been stuck there for almost 30 minutes now.
Any help possible? Any at ALL would be MUCH appreciated.

What ROM are you trying to flash on your phone?
Did you checked first if the Bootloader was actually unlocked?
Did you flash a custom kernel thru fastboot?
Custom ROM needs custom kernel.

I was trying to flash HYBROM.
Bootloader was unlocked for sure as I had installed Coconut previously, which also requires bootloader unlock.
No worries though; i solved my problem. I flashed an older firmware, along with a bootload relocker, with Flashtool. Now my phone has switched on, to my stock ROM. Still no clue how to flash hybrom ROM as it caused the same problem even after wiping dalvik cache and all other data (which was the solution provided by dev)

check first page of hybrom thread
Installation instructions
Needs unlocked bootloader
(actually hybrom does not contain a boot image. Thus, when you install hybrom you don't mess with your boot image at all.BUT recovery from nAa is installed in /system and while system is formated during the installation of hybrom, recovery messes with it self. That's why unlocked bootloader and a custom kernel with recovery is necessary for now to install hybrom)

I did not deny that a custom kernel is needed, I wanted to know how to flash/use a custom kernel?
To flash a custom kernel you need to have flashtool (sticky thread on the dev section) so:
1.- you download the custom kernel (it is a boot.img file)
2.- open flashtool
3.- connect your phone to your computer while the phone its off and you are holding the volume up key without releasing it the notification led should turn on blue.
4.- if the phone it's not recognized go to the flashtool folder and install the drivers located on the drivers folder once it is done repeat step 3 and it should be recognized.
5.- once your device it's connected click the thunderbolt icon on flashtool in the new screen select fastboot mode and continue.
6.- in the new screen click on select kernel to flash and browse to the boot.img you downloaded.
7.- check the flashtool log to make sure everything is fine if it is you are good to go.
Hope it helps.

Depending on the ROM, you want to install, you need correct kernel.
CM ROMs work only with FXP kernels, included in their topic.
MIUI ROMs have only specific kernels also, included in their topic.
Stock-based ROMs(XROM, Hybrom) work with Rage Kernel, X Kernel, bbooff's kernel, all these are in Development section, just search.
Glad to be helpful anything else just let us know.
Thanks very much!
I have a live with walkman from 3 etwork. the bootloader is locked. can I still flash hybrom 16 through CWM?
check service menu,
confirm if bootloader can be unlocked.
it should state "bootloader unlock allowed : yes".
after unlocking bootloader then there will be no problem installing hybrom
check this thread for more info about unlocking bootloader.

IMPORTANT !!!!!!
ONCE ROOTED,
Download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&hl=en and backup all your apps(on SD card)
Step 3(next step) of this post will reset(factory reset) your phone.
BACKUP ALL YOUR CONTACTS AND CALENDER ON GOOGLE
BACKUP ALL YOUR MESSAGES AND IMPORTANT STUFF !!
MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR SD CARD ON PC FOR SAFETY (THIS WILL BE DONE AFTER ALL BACKUPS ARE DONE I.E. LAST BACKUP)
Step 3: UNLOCK BOOTLOADER
If you have no idea about this, read this
Why exactly is this a big deal? For the general population, this doesn’t matter. However, for the modding community, locked bootloaders are simply a pain. When the bootloader is locked, certain portions of the device are unable to be customized such as recoveries or kernels. A lot of the time, when rooting a device, the first step requires the bootloader to be unlocked or bypassed. So, depending on the device in question and the will of the developer, creative Android hacking has allowed some devices with locked bootloaders to run custom ROMs. Generally, these devices aren’t as stable as they could be if the device was able to be completely customized from the ground up.
1) http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ and follow the steps carefully ( skip step 13, we've already done that )
IF YOU GET STUCK ON STEP 14,DO THIS
to navigate to android SDK folder, use this command(without quotes)
"cd location_of_your_android_SDK\platform-tools"
for me, it was - "C:\androidSDK\platform-tools"
2)If you followed the rules, you will have an unlocked bootloader
3)Yipeeee !!!
4)Dont worry about your apps, they're still on your SD card
5)Restore only the apps which are very important and you cant live without them for a day..
Step 4: INSTALLING CWM(CLOCK WORK MOD / RECOVERY)
if you dont know what cwm is, just read but dont follow the steps to install it
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...-and-how-to-use-it-on-android-complete-guide/
1) http://www.mediafire.com/?73xv18tht0e8zt4 download cwm
2)Connect your phone in MSC (mass storage mode) mode and wait until SD card available to PC
3)increase your display time out to 2 minutes
4)Enable USB debugging and allow 3rd party/unknown sources
5)open the downloaded folder(extract first)
6)Run install-cwm1.cmd
7)sit back and enjoy!!!
8)once finished, you'll have cwm installed!!!!
9)to check if you have cwm, turn off phone
10)turn on and when sony logo appears, repeatedly press vol down button until you reach a blue colored menu, if successful, cwm is installed properly!! if not, please comment or reinstall it.
11)navigation in cwm-
go up-vol up
go down-vol down
select option-home button
previous menu-back button
thanks siddharthsure93
Step 5: TAKING A NANDROID BACKUP
if you have no idea about this, read this
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/38468-nandroid-backup-what-is-it-and-did-i-need-it/
make sure that your sd card has at least 1gb free space and you have 50% battery charge
1)Hoping that you have cwm installed, turn off phone
2)Enter cwm by repeatedly press vol down button when sony logo appears
3)go to "backup and restore"
4)select "backup"
5)wait for 10-15 minutes till your phone is backuped
6)now you have a copy of your current phone and rom memory
we do this to restore phone if something goes wrong
NOW YOU HAVE PREPARED YOUR PHONE TO GET CM9 OR ANY FU*KIN ROM !!! :good::good:
IF I GO WRONG SOMEWHERE, PLEASE CORRECT ME WE ALL LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKES.

You will need to root your phone first. Installing a custom ROM won't automatically give you root acces. In fact, I don't think you will be able to install a custom ROM without ClockWork Mod Recovery which needs root access first. Follow Sony's own rooting guide here: http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/41119?start=0&tstart=0. Then install X-Parts from the Play Store to get CWM.
Once you have CWM you can install any appropriate custom ROM you like.

Use flash tool and an ftf file to update to ICS. You can go with 0.587 version for example.
After update as you are on unlocked bootloader you should flash a custom ICS kernel like suave, night elf or any other ICS compatible. This will give you root and cwm.
Look at the stickys. You will find all you need.

You can always relock the bootloader (don't know what method you used to unlock, so can't advise on how to relock - I only know how if unlocking was done through Sony). Update the firnware to stock Sony ICS using Sony's PC Companion. Then root it using Sony's rooting guide. After rooting you can unlock the bootloader again. Install X-Parts and CWM. Then try out the custom ROMs+kernels to your heart's content.

On the other hand, unlocking via official method gives you an easy option to Relock bl via flashtool!
There's a thread by Blagus on how to do that!
Btw even Relocking via setool is an option for unofficially unlocked bl users!
So there's always an option!

Yes. That's the tutorial I'm talking about. I only mentioned what I did because I've done it before. After relocking use PC Companion to update your phone. Or the Sony phone repair program. I don't remember which. If you try both (like I did) one (or both) of them will work. But still you are out of warranty. You know that, don't you?

I think you are right. It's basically about losing DRM. I don't know what it is and of what use it is. All I know is I've never missed it. If you are into trying out custom ROMs then unlocking the bootloader is a must because certain custom ROMs need custom kernels. To install custom kernels you must have an unlocked bootloader.

stock IML74K.WW_epad-9.4.2.15-20120221
stock bootloader (locked)
rooted
CWM 5.8.3.4 installed
problems are:
i don't get OTA update notification (maybe 'cos I'm rooted)
i cannot get back to stock putting WW_epad-user-9.4.2.28.zip onmy SD card root, because update starts but at the first reboot I'm bumped into CWM instead of installing new rom.
I tried trekest (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1909820) method with no luck (I always get bumped to CWM).
I wish someone could help me! any suggestion is appreciated
THANKS IN ADVANCE
P.S. i realized that this is an ancient problem 'cos last ICS ver should be .28 and not .15 :-/

imho if you have cwm -> you're unlocked -> no ota
truly speaking i don't know if i'm locked or not... but running the ASUS unlock app still ask me to unlock, with the unlock warning...
so i desume i'm still locked (and perhaps this is why i cannot install any other rom), strange thing is i dont get the OTA notification...
i gusss i'm LOCKED, but supposing i'm UNLOCKED, what i can do?

Supposing that you're unlocked, head to the development section and flash a custom rom of your preference, no point settling for a stock ROM supposing that you've already voided your warranty

no...
just eee pad asus boot logo....
To know if you're unlocked, only boot your prime: at the boot screen, upper left side, it'written "device is unlocked".
I am unlocked, same CMR than yours, I just download the WWW zip on Asus support website, extract once the zip (once more but just to know what was inside).
And in recovery, wipe data/factory reset, and flash the zip that was inside the downloaded zip like any custom Rom.
Then reboot, and wait for installation end. (It flash the recovery again I think.)
Then JB!
Well.... Then i'm LOCKED... I dont think i can flash the update in this Way, right?
Got it... Followed the suggestion thanks

to solve the mystery, you're unlocked?
Well, when i was on ICS nothing showed at bootstrap, but when i booted to JB it says 'unlocked device'... so NOW i guess it's UNLOCKED :-{
Hi
Always happens when you do a favour for someone......
Anyway, i have an xperia U stuck in a boot loop.
1. Ive unlocked the bootloader (that went all ok)
2. Downloaded a prerooted rom and tried to install through fastboot using command line. I couldnt get that working so i used the flashtool to install the rom that way. I renamed the rom system.img and flashed through flashtool and thats pretty where im at now....
If anyone could chip in that would be great
Thanks to anyone that does
Comfy

Hi - thanks for that - im there now - i cant seem to get it into fastboot - the green light comes on but then it carries on trying to boot - is it a timing thing - ie how long i leave the down button pressed?? or is it knackered....oh- thanks for the link as well....
drsanket_xperia_u - just to say thanks for the link - if anyone else comes across this thread i got the image reflashed - for whatever reason (and i dont know why) it was the usb cable that was the problem - i tried 3 different cables at home but the one that worked (by chance as i thought it was knackered) was a long, quite thick blackberry usb cable - just thought id say....
No ive got my rom back on there - the initial problem i had was rooting firstly....havent got to the CWM part or the rom part but once rooted i guess thats the same as most other phones.....now im reflashed is the bootloader locked again.....?
Again thanks for the link - i dont think i would have found that without your help.
Thanks for the Help!
The same happened with me as well! While trying to install JB unofficial from PIPI, I unlocked my BL which went out fine but the mistake I did was I did not copy the JB fw on to my SD-card when the phone was working. Flashed PHANTOM kernel and my phone never started up since
Downloading the stock FW ftf file from the links provided right now!
Thanks a lot

Yeahp just follow the steps:
1. Reflash stock FW
2. Save the kernel and Pipi's JB in the phone
3. Reboot into Recovery (if you don't know how to install recovery let me know)
4. Full wipe
5. Install from SD card (first JB, then kernel)
Hope that works for you :good:
DONE!

Buddy the Kernel had to be flashed first, because it contains that Recovery option and then I flashed the first copied JB stock!
Anyway, the phone is rocking since and I'm easily playing my current love Dungeon Hunter 4 with a Breeze!! although it closes down after every 10 minutes (approx) of lag-free play :-/

Well that's great. When I said flash kernel after rom I meant PHANTOM zip. Just for future reference, you have to flash boot.img via fastboot first, then go into CWM and follow the steps I posted. I forgot that first step
I think the game thing is because of RAM
Simply Flash the Factory Original Sony Firmware Once Again

Just Google for "Unbrick Xperia U"
theirs a official Sony mobile thread.
Sorry i am new to the forum and can't post links yet
Trust me this works.

I'm about to install KitKat 4.4 on my Sony Xperia P but I can not get into CWM mode!
Some say I should press Home + Volume down (doesn't work) and some say Power + Volume up (doesn't work) or Power + Volume down.
Which is it???? There should be three vibrations and then....?
Thanks!

I am taking it you did not unlock bootloader, case you cannot flash no non stock based custom ROMs.
Forget about ROM manager, it's not gonna work on XP, not untill they make it work on XP which I don't think they did.
Install recovery using recoverx its a windows software then after install shut down and use volume up at Sony logo.

She has to flash a kernel to get CWM, no?
Ok, see.
You'll need to unlock the bootloader to have the CWM, Sony stock doesn't has a CWM to flash ROMs so it won't work but here's the thing...
In order to get CWM you have to unlock the bootloader and fast boot flash a custom kernel, once you got it you can enter by pressing volume up repeatly, or depending in the kernel you've flashed.
If my vocabulary is so strange to you, I can explain you better, I guess.
But that's it.

No there is CWM for unlocked bootloader, But since the OP wants to install CM anyway he/she need unlocked bootloader.

Ah, okey! No I have not unlocked the bootloader (yet) and I am reading about RecoveryX for the moment and if I have understood it correctly I will get CWM with it, yes?
I am going to install cm-11-20131201-UNOFFICIAL-nypon-NIGHTLY-14 and gapps-modular-mini-4.4-20131118-signed on my LG Optimus x2 first, before I try it out on my new Xperia - just to make sure I like it and that the incoming call bug is gone with 4.4.
No need to upgrade if the incoming and outgoing dialer issue is still there.
It has CWM installed and is ready to go.
Ps. Yes, I'm a woman.

So THAT's when I do it - at the Sony logo! Thanks!
I have tried RecoveryX before, never worked.
You must have bootloader unlocked to install CM and since you going to flash kernel anyway just use the provided kernel don't bother with recovery.
I don't know if the dialer issue present in JB CMs at all, so you might try them first. CM11 is still in early stage.
LG has the call lag also?
Sorry deleted i saw it to late it was for kitkat
Well, first, like everybody has told you, Unlock the bootloader, then for incoming call lag, i recommend you try CM10.2 or CM11, those are good in this .. and are great for daily use, no big problems.
For unlocking your bootloader you should follow the steps that Sony™ gives you. That´s the easy way.
Have luck..!
