Phone hangs on USB OTG file transfer - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I'm experiencing a complete break down that requires reboot every time when I try to transfer some files to a USB key connected via adapter.
I can transfer small files no problem, but when trying an avi file roughly 2GB in size the progress meter in the status bar will get to 15 or 16% then stop, and the whole phone will become unresponsive, even after unplugging the usb cable. I've tried leaving it run for over an hour in case the file was transferring during the hang, but it didn't transfer.
I'm on a sim-free i9300 bought in UK, using AOKP milestone 6 with Siyah 1.5, and the usb key is NTFS.
Thanks

New kinda Charging problem:((

everything was fine till now with the charger, lately i have this strange charging problem which goes like this..
previously when we connect the wall/usb charger charging used to start immediately but now it takes time..i need to wait for 45 seconds then the light appears..??
previosly it used to attain 100% charge quickly..but now its slogging??i mean very slow trust me...
responds late to the power n then slow charge??????????????
its the same even when i try with usb and the worst part is it doesn even detect usb connection but charge at slow rate??
any ideas?thanks in advance!!
right now im on cobratos 2.3.4 awesome miui rom!!
So you are using APP2SDcard? You are going to have problems mounting it to USB, if the SDCard is already being used.
For the 45 second thing....I donno....do you have any Task Manager app where you can make sure you don't have like 10+ apps running? Check that. Turn all apps off and then try.

Can you unmount the SDCard under Settings->SDCard and Phone Storage?
If you can unmount it....do that....then plug the phone into a computer (using the original USB cable that came with the phone)
And try using different USB ports or a different computer.
It not charging for 45 seconds after you plug it in would make me want to reflash and start from scratch again. Not a good sign.
That is probably what I would suggest next.
Will try with a different computer and let you no...
apart from 45 seconds delay even the charging process has become very slow:-(
Tried even with different usb ports and computer..no luck
Phones usb socket has gone I guess

Can the computer recognize the phone in flash mode?
If so, try flashing 2.1 with flashtool to fix the problem

What about getting into xrecovery?
You could flash a different ROM with the baseband it matches.

Yea could do that but still the problem persists
Have you tried changing the usb cable? I was convinced my usb port had gone, as it took ages to recognise the charger, and I often had to wiggle the cable where it was plugged into the phone to get it to start charging.
Then I left my cable at home and had to buy a cheap £1 blackberry charge cable from poundland to charge my phone at work - and all problems went away!
After checking the ends of both cables, it looks like the usb pins have become bent inside the small end of the usb cable (mini-usb end).
I'd doublecheck this before doing anything more drastic as it's a simple thing to overlook (well, I did!)
Yep tried with different cables too..i don't think its the problem of usb port too as there is a late recognition ..slow charging but no sd connection

[Q] Samsung Moment - USB mounting only in recovery

I have a Samsung Moment that has a flakey acting usb port. I can connect with qpst and cdma workshop, but I can't charge the battery or mount the sd card. Debugging is off, usb set to pda (tried modem setting too). It detects the usb cable connected but when I try to mount a blank screen titled Android System appears and disappears in a fraction of a second and no usb mount options appear. The weird thing is that I have no problem mounting the sd card in recovery, and I have no problems transferring files in either direction. The phone still won't charge, but everything else with the usb port seems to work without a hitch. The only time my batt. seems to charge (or act like it is) is when I power down from system, but then it only charges for about 30 secs before saying the batt. is fully charged. And it does this no matter how low the battery actually is. I only get about 2.5v on the batt. pins, but on another Moment I have that won't boot up but will charge the batt. I get around 4.5v. I'm running a 2.2 rom right now, but this phone had these issues when I got it (used) running stock 2.1.

[Q] Problem with my USB cable

Hi,
I have a GT-i9100 which i've had for maybe a year more or less. With it came a USB cable which has worked flawlessly until about 2 and a ½ week ago. When i plug it in, the computer recognizes the device, no problem. But then when i move that cable a little it suddenly unrecognizes and then immediately recognizes the device again. I'm talking even just a slight touch sometimes can trigger this behaviour.
This is a problem because i move many files from my phone to my computer, that takes alot of space. Sometimes up to 2-3 GB worth of information. (i don't technically move files, i just update it's file on my computer eg. if i take a picture, i later move the new file with the newly taken picture to my computer, then delete the old one and thus updating it)
Another major problem is if i want to flash a Kernel/ROM via Odin or upgrade a firmware through Kies. If i accedentally move the cable and it does what's stated above, i could potentially brick my device, right?
So please if you know what could cause this "flickering", don't hesitate to reply and if i can fix this somehow please reply also.
Could be the usb cable, or the usb flex on your device. The same thing happens when charging via AC? check it out.
Don't think about flashing with that cable just yet...that can be nasty if a fly suddenly sits on it while flashing.
Use dropbox to move your files for the time being.

When connecting my Note 2, to the PC I cannot transfer files. Please help.

About 3 months, I had some issues connecting my i605, rooted, running Jelly Beans Build 13 ROM to my PC (windows 8). It started with not being able to detect the phone at all, it then evolved into spotty charging, and the phone randomly going into "car mode" because from what I could tell, it thought it was docked. So I figured this was due to a faulty charging port, so I took it to a renowned shop and got the port replaced. Prior to getting it replaced charging got better and car mode (which was incredibly annoying because it caused many stutters and force closes from constantly turning on and off in quick succession) pretty much disappeared completely except for once. Since getting it repaired, charging has improved, and car mode has yet to appear, however it will not transfer files still. The PC is 50/50 with recognizing the device at all. Sometimes it will show up under "My computer" sometimes not. When it DOES I can explore the SD card (sandisk 64gb class 10) fine, and the phone onboard memory, but when I try transferring TO the phone I get an error that says, "The device is not responsive, or has been disconnected". Now when transferring from the card to my pc I get another error, but that error is also 50/50. I just tried it and can transfer from the card to my desktop fine, but not vice versa EVER. Anyone have similar issues or even better, a solution?
EDIT: I tried changing the ROM's extension to just .file and it moved over fine. This leads me to believe it for what ever reason just will not transfer .zips(seeing as that's all I've tried transferring, and .file worked fine).

You say Car Mode still hasn't started up since having it replaced? Could it be an issue with the replacement? I have replaced ports on plenty on phones, doing it myself not taking it to shops, and have never had this issue but it could be they didn't do a good job, didnt use enough solder to fill the PCB holes, and it isnt making contact the entire time.
It may also be a driver issue but to me it sounds like maybe the replacement isnt a quality replacement, maybe he didn't use enough or used to much solder, or there is another underlying problem with your phones MoBo that is causing this.

No, not having car mode is a GOOD thing. Car mode was giving me hell. It'd randomly at anytime just start turning on and off rapidly. The only remaining issue is the transferring of .zip files.

And its *only* zip files that will not transfer when the phone is acting wonky? What kernel are you using?

From what I have seen, yes, just .zips.
Kernal is "3.0.36-Perseus-alpha35"

Have you tried troubleshooting this issue using just the micro sd card in a card reader?
It could be that windows 8 hasn't the proper drivers to interface with the phone.
Also, a cheap workaround could be to transfer the zip files to a flash drive and
use an otg cable to connect flash drive to the phone for transfer there. If the zips transfer that way I would suspect
the windows 8 pc samsung drivers to be the culprit. After considering all the facts, though, you might want to return your phone for a port repair again. My curiosity got the better of me. Does it charge with the factory wall charger with no interrupts?

You mean put the micro SD into an adapter to make it a regular SD card and then try that? If that's what you're talking about I've tried that too, for what ever reason that card (64gb sandisk class 10) is read only. I can't write to that card. Maybe its the formatting or something but if I recall right I researched why I couldn't write to it months ago, and though it's very fuzzy I feel like my research amounted to: "you're **** out of luck". Trying with an OTG might work, but I'd have to get an OTG cable first. Thing is it USED to transfer .zips. That's how I rooted and placed ROMs on my phone. It's only recently after all this charging port problems that transferring became an issue. I thought it was simply because the port became loose and the "connectors" (excuse my lack of hardware-speak) were touching and then jiggling during charging or unplugging the phone or whatever caused the port to lose connection with the rest of the phone. So I blamed a defective port for all my issues and decided to replace it. Now since it's been replaced all past issues are gone, except this transfer issue. And to answer your final question, it did not prior to the repair, it does now from what I've seen.

rbox pro 3-32gb bricked/dead

i had my rbox pro 3+32 for 2 weeks which immediately showed power issues randomly cutting out i contacted the seller who gave me a 25% refund if i agreed to keep the box so i thought a sd burning update of the new firmware may fix it but it cut out just as update was starting now it is hard bricked with no tv output and only a light blue light with a reset button not seeming to work (i have since found the power adapter was causing the orig power cutout issues and replaced it), i have tried to do sd burn but nothing happens, i have tried usb burn but does not connect i tried shorting pins next to the bga emmc where an older style nand chip could have been optioned , i cant even get it to connect via uart ttl
i have tried to find another solution but im all out of luck any help would be appreciated
my only other idea is to remove emmc chip and install a sd card socket in its place but i cant find any info on this and im not sure if its even possible
Ok finally all sorted by soldering 2 wires on the old tsop pads (even though it uses a bga emmc) and holding the wires together for 8 seconds from the time i plugged in the power, also it had to be powered via a usb port instead of main plug as the sd didnt seem to get power to it while it was bricked using the main plug ??. anyways after the 8 seconds the screen lit up and i opened the shorted wires and the sd update started, after 10- 12 minutes it completed and all is well
I used the h96pro plus android 7.1 firmware and it seems to be very compatible with no issues that i have noticed so far
Any way you could document your process a little more? Like which pads you used? My r-box died watching youtube, and stops at 7% using usb burning tool, and also stops right away using sdcard method. Would love to revive this device.
