3hrs of charging only up 4% WTF - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Read through al the other charging issues posted and can't find one like mine. So here is my issue.
Prime been working wonderfully then yesterday was on it watching netflix videos and while plugged in it kept loosing charge until it was down to 5% on tablet and 0% on dock. So I shut it down and left it plugged in all day. The battery icon showed the lightning on it stating it was charging but after sitting for about 4 hours nothing. still showed about 6% charge on the tablet and 0% on the dock. So I tried another outlet and eventually left it plugged in all night well this morning still only about 15% charge on the tablet and 0% on the dock.
Going to try again and leave it turned off all day and see if it charges, will report back in 3 hours on my lunch break to see if anything changes. The prime recognizes when the charger is plugged in and when I unplug it I get the message that it is low on battery. Here's a screen shot of it stating it is charging.
Also note: Neither light on the power button or on the dock is on while plugged up but yet it shows charging on the lock screen.
Edit: plugged in directly to tablet to wall and only has gone up to 8% charged. Seems something wrong somewhere. Tested charger on SGS and it works, hopefully just the cable gone bad. Will order new one to see if that works, but until then no prime for me. :crying:

After being completely turned off and plugged in all day here we are:

what do you mean tested your charger on SGS and its fine?
the Prime has a proprietary plug and cable that only works in the prime and dock where as the SGS just uses micro USB.
what part did you use on your SGS?

Plugged my SGS charger into the black box of the Prime, plugged that into the wall outlet and i get charging icon on my SGS is what I mean. So the black box itself seems to be working. No way to test out the cable itself seeing it works only on the Prime.

Be careful the prime charger delivers 15 volts you could have burnt your phone lol.

Only had it in for a second to see if it was sending a charge.
Update: Have had prime plugged into wall completely turned off. Still no light on the dock plug in or on the tablet itself and now after 6 hours it is only 7% charge. This is pissing me off.

If you have a test device try to check the delivered voltage from charger, if it's correct it' s a hardware **** in Prime, or a bad connector in cable.

The Prime charger delivers 5v when another non-Transformer device is connected. Otherwise they could not use an USB standard connector for the charger

Found out issue. It was my power brick. It is not bad it is just doing a trickle charge to the prime for some reason. Here's how I figured it out.
Did some research and found out that the following charger and adapter does work on the Prime to charge it (Using it now) with the OEM USB Cable.
Radioshack:
Enercell 12VDC*1.5A AC to DC Power Adapter Part #273-358
Enercell Adaptaplug USB_A Socket Part # 273-227
Total Cost $24 bucks and the first adataplug is free.

Charging issues

I'm loving my razr so far with the exception of some charging problems. Firstly I find that when using the phone when charging from the mains it is generally unresponsive and erratic.
Secondly my phone charged from a usb cable for the first hour or so and then it wouldn't charge anymore?
Thinking of sending my phone back in exchange for a galaxy nexus but I really do love this phone...
i had the same isue with my x2 and it wasd my cable.

I am experiencing the same issue, which sucks because I love the phone too
are you using the cables that came with your phone?
I've actually not had any issues with chargers, i've used generic, z Samsung galaxy S2 charger, Nokia n9 charger and the old Sony Ericsson charger from my old xperia x10

I noticed it was not charging on my buddy's pc yesterday (first time I've ever seen this), and when I plugged it into my charging dock later, it still didn't start charging. My battery was pretty low so I rebooted it and it started working again
Other than that I haven't had charging issues
I've now tried it out over the weekend with different cables and PC's, the results are erratic. It only sometimes charges via other cables. I can see from the charging status it is not getting as much voltage as it does when it charges normally.
On the plug/cable that came with it though it seems to always work. Maybe not a dealbreaker but irritating that I'll have to carry the same charger everywhere?
Motorola phone's are strange, use the one that came with phone and problems go away

No problems charging from all sorts of junk cables, computer etc. Razr 910 en.ca
I am also having this same issue. I am currently using the charger and cable that the phone came with and it's not charging. I also multiple other chargers and cables all with the same specs and it's odd, sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. I have reboot the phone multiple times today and the phone just seems to stay at the same battery level while plugged in. The last two times this happened it seemed to correct itself eventually but it's getting quite annoying.
I left a download to complete and plugged it into a usb port into my comp. I wake up in the morning to find it dead. It wont boot up. So i plugged in a wall charger, turns out it had died out. How is this possible if the USB port in my comp was charging it?!!!

You need to check when you have it plugged into a PC that it is set properly. Tap on the USB connection in the notification bar and see what is selected.

Charging Issue = Charging Lag
Started talking about this in another thread.
Bottomline is that the Lag your experiencing is not a new issue for Motorola for whatever reasoning. You'll see my comments in the other thread, but I believe the best course is to get a replacement.

DC Power Jack??

Anyone been able to find a genuine Asus Car charger? I have several DC to USB adapters but when I plug them in the Prime doesn't register a charging battery. There are after market ones but I'm afraid they may not work like the ones I have tried.
Most car chargers are in the 5V range, while the Transformer Tablets need a 12V charger. Not sure where to find those though, but I've never looked. I just use an inverter and whichever AC charger I need if I'm in need of power.

I purchased the one from Amazon and when I plug it into my Prime, the prime locks up. Has anyone else encountered this?

The Prime needs 15v in order to register charging status. Most care adapters will only deliver 5v since that is the voltage expected by most USB devices. The Prime will charge from 5v however the device will need to be completely turned off, and it will take a long time (~20ish hours) to go from depleted to full charge.
I don't know if there are any 12v to USB adapters that will really meet the power requirements for full-charging the Prime because the Prime's power requirements are fairly unique. If you really need to charge your Prime from your car you might be better off using the Prime's normal charger with something like this: http://www.amazon.com/BESTEK-inverter-motolora-blackberry-notebook/dp/B003Q54V88/ref=pd_sbs_sg_1
They are available on ebay, you will probably have to import one from hong kong, it is essentially a 12V to usb adaptor, the one I bought was packed with a asus plug aswell. It puts 12volts onto the usb adaptor.
The prime does not need 15V to charge, it will charge at about 11.8. Mine charges fine in my car with the engine running i.e alternater putting out 13.2 volts but the prime starts spitting a dummy when the engine stopped as the battery voltage is right on the threshold. The only way around is to shut down the prime before stopping the engine and then it will happily continue charging on ~12 volts.
The Prime requires 15v to charge at a normal rate. It will charge at 12v albeit at a slower rate. Normal USB output is 5v.

Hence this one feeds 12V to usb rather than 5V

Yes, I bought the same one and my Prime locks up and reboots a few times. Never tried it again after it did that.
I played around with the cable which came with the car adapter and found that it would not work with the transformer prime. I hope to test the cable with came with the TP and the car adapter. Will report my findings later.

I did this test this morning (using actual asus cable) and my Prime just went into a reboot loop. i was able to get it back after a while. I'm returning mine. I don't think this item should be on the accessory list. Unless i just got a bad one...

I hacked one together based on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1087321
I used the 100W transformer pictured towards the bottom. It also has a regular USB so I can charge two things at once.
I'm glad I carry a dc-ac converter in my car. Just need to get another cable / adapter.

[Q] 9.4.2.21 update causes tablet to not charge

I am not sure if it is a coincidence, but after I updated the tablet to 9.4.2.21, it will not charge. I can plug it into my laptop, and it is recognized as a ADB device, and ADB pops up on the tablet, but it says not charging. If I plug it in to a USB Power jack, it does absolutely nothing. Does anybody have any ideas? I think I may try a system restore, since I never did when I installed ICS.
I have none of the issues that you mentioned. Try a soft reboot, that should help.
I tried that at first, and I just factory reset the tablet, and to no avail. I may have to go back to best buy. Ill try resetting with reset button, an hope for good luck.
[edit]
Dumb thing, the Asus power block outputs a higher DC voltage than a normal USB charger, and the tablet will only charge from the Asus block. Odd because I have used other power blocks previously.

Are you trying to charge from the laptop USB port or from the Asus wall charger?
If you are trying to charge from a PC USB port, you should know that the Prime won't really charge from anything less than 15v which is 3x the voltage supplied by your PCs USB port. Also when charging from a 5v USB source the Prime won't charge at all if it is not turned off.
If you are trying to charge from the Asus wall adapter you might check out this thread:

FWIW I got the .21 update this morning and I have no problem charging my Prime.
i recently had this issue - i have not updated to .21. neither my dock or my tablet would charge for over a day. it ended up fixing itself somehow, the dock battery died but there was a little left on the tablet. just suddenly started charging. my computer also recognized my TP without issue.
try unplugging it for a while, let it sit plugged into your computer for a couple hours then back into the wall...thats what i did at least.

This is probably a charger issue over a prime issue. The charger will shut itself off if it determines it has gotten too hot, sometimes permanently... Try popping the thing in the freezer for a bit if the problem doesn't resolve itself in a few hours.
Same issue here. Just updated and now no charge.

ive not had this issue, mine was at like 20% when i did the update and it charged fine after
mine has been charging just fine after updating
It's not supposed to charge on anything less than 12v, which is what the official wall charger outputs. My Prime's never charged over PC USB (5v), even before the .21 update.
The Volts and the Amps are important...

The prime will charge from a 5V USB socket; albeit slower than from the supplied 12V unit (and it helps a lot if the Prime is off at the time.)
The other factor is the Amps that the USB socket is able to supply. A "good" mains powered 5V USB socket will usually be able to deliver 500mA - 1000mA which will charge a modern phone at a fast rate.
A PC USB socket will probably only be able to deliver fewer amps; which is why phones charge slower from a PC USB and may not be enough to charge the Prime at all.
I have a 5V USB wall socket that's able to deliver up to 2000mA and it is able to charge my Prime.
- And just to add, my Prime has been charging fine since the .21 update, and generally running better all round...
Mine charged fine overnight.

Ah, true, it is written in the tiniest writing on the adapter. I just checked the manual and it states the TPF requires 15v at 1.2A for charging. Not sure where I got the 12v from.
One more thing: I've realised that if charging from 5V USB with the TPF still on, the TPF doesn't show that it's charging, even though it is, slowly. This could explain why some people are reporting that it won't charge from USB.
Fixed it by plugging into PC then back into charger. Weird that it quit charging first time plugging iafter update.n

Do a restart and see if that helps.
For me seems that my TP is not going to sleep like before he update. When screen is off, i come back a few hours to check email, it feels warm on the top right hand corner, and seems that the battery will drop about 7% every half hour with the screen off.

My prime stopped charging for the 1st time. Don't know if it's related to the .21 update...tried reboot etc didn't work.
In the end it started charging again after I followed others' experience that unplug the charger, connect the tablet to pc via the usb to verify the cable connection, wait 10-15 min (the theory is that the charger would reset itself this way which may have turned itself off after being perhaps too hot from previous charge, I didn't put the charger in the freeze as others suggested because it's cold already), plug it back in and it started charging again!
Never had this issue before the .21 update, could be coincidence. Was really worried earlier as my battery was at 2%...

[Q] How fast does it the charging dock actually charge?

From my experience with Sony's charging dock on the Tablet Z, I found that it charged quite slowly as compared to a usb connected charge. I would see an overnight charge which is roughly 8 hours to only charge 30% to 85% whereas a direct usb charge would give a full charge within an hour and a half. Just wondering cause I've ordered the Z2 and hoped that the dock wouldn't be such a bad experience cause I don't want to bother with the flaps unless I have to.
I picked up a generic dock from Amazon. Seems to be 'straight through' connections, so chargers as fast as the charger will allow...

The magnetic charging port is definitely slower but mine still charges in a few hours on the dock next to my bed(not sure how many amps the wall adapter is). In my car it seems about the same off the 2 amp charger(so I assume the other is only 1-1.5 amp) with much heavier drain(bright screen, BT streaming, navigation, etc.).

A lot will depend on the quality of the cable as well. I have the no name dock from amazon and it is slow to charge with the supplied short cable but very quick with the Sony one
Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk
It depends on the charger and the cable, to charge a 3200 MAH battery for the z2
a minimum 2 amp charger and 38 pin cable is definitely a must !
My magnetic charging port charges at a rate of 1% every 1 1/2 mins, 2 1/2 hours for full charge according to my battery stats which seem about right.

Ookay... I just connected the Mulitmeter between smartphone and dock (it's a hassle.... Hacked USB cable would be nice....)
The official Sony wallcharger (1.5A) is charging the dock and Smartphone with 800-850mA.
I tried Doomkernels Fastcharge and forced constant AC =roughly 1300mA.
Strangly when I set it to 1500 or 2000 in Faux app it falls back to 800mA.
The battery was 85% charged when I made those tests.

Yeah,,,, so.... i made a reallife test!
Set FauxApp to "Constant AC" in FastCharge options.
in 5 hours it charged 16% xD 3.2% Per hour.
Then after that i set to "Custom" 1200mA
Charged from 76% to 100% in 3.5hours
tonight i'm trying to empty the phone (Unreal Epic Citadel might be a good idea, or maybe GFXbenchmark Battery Test....) and set to Custom 1500mAh and see what happens.

i wonder if it would charge faster than the Sony 1.5A charger.

Phew... dem chargers! 18W and 30W editions!
5V 4A
9V 2.2A
12V 2.5A
20V 1A
Quick charge 2.0 does only use 9V sporadically doesn't it ?
Edit2: and 9V 4A .... wow
I wish. I could do charging in 90 minutes. It takes twice as that now.

I got one for my Idol 3. It works just fine...HOWEVER:
1) It is a slow charge vs. the USB cable (2-3 times slower).
2) Heats up the battery pretty quickly and gets pretty hot
3) Really inconvenient if you only have one wireless charging station and have to charge in the car or something
4) Tore mine because it was flimsy and I needed to charge using a cable (see #3).
Over all recommendation, yes, get it, it's fun to have wireless charging. BUT if you're going to be removing the plug everyday and switch between wireless charging and USB cable, be forewarned of what could happen.

Personally I feel the USB cable, with the included wall adapter, is STILL an extremely slow charge. That's one thing I dislike about this phone. The battery seems to take forever to charge just 5%. My phone was at about 60% one day and I decided to plug it in and went under battery and it said 4 more hours until full charge. 4 hours to charge just 40%? I wish Alcatel added the Quick Charge feature since the Snapdragon 615 it uses is capable of doing so.
Mine charges from about 25% to 100% in about 2 hours using included wall adapter with Dollar Tree USB cable (longer).
4 hours? That's a really long time. I charge mine using a sorts of chargers laying around and from nearly depleted to full, maybe 2.5hours max. :-/
The quality of your USB cable will affect the charge time. Cheaper cables contain less copper. I just replaced my ebay cables with branded, and the charge time for all my devices is much improved. The new cables were still under 2 GBP.
Thanks for the replies. I'm using a 6' charging cable from a brand called Xtreme bought at FiveBelow. Guess I'll start searching for a Samsung one or something.
As I mentioned in my previous post, I am using a USB cable from Dollar Tree. Can't get much cheaper than that. It charges just fine, from 25% to 100% is about 2 hours. The original cable that came with the Idol was not faster and it was too short for my use.
Charging cable deal five for $5.49

Personally I feel the USB cable, with the included wall adapter, is STILL an extremely slow charge. That's one thing I dislike about this phone. The battery seems to take forever to charge just 5%. My phone was at about 60% one day and I decided to plug it in and went under battery and it said 4 more hours until full charge. 4 hours to charge just 40%? I wish Alcatel added the Quick Charge feature since the Snapdragon 615 it uses is capable of doing so.

Your connector must be damaged, mine charges 1% per minute until it starts it's trickle charge cycle around 80%.

Actually it was just my charging cable that was the problem. I bought a new Anker charger and it charges the phone 10 times faster now. Really relieved that it wasn't something with the phone itself.

daft question maybe - will it still fit in a case?

Fairly certain you'll need a case to be able to use it since there's no removable back on the Idol 3 so you'll need a case to hold it in place between the phone.
