in your xda's custom kernels i can't disable cpu 1 completly. i need this because of battery drain. i got only one game on my phone and i buy my phone for my game. fruit ninja is the best game ever. it runs on earlier oc'ed kernels from ryrzy, coolexe and, anryl. it runs at one core at 1.2 ghz without any micro lag. it lags when more fruits was on the screen(not lag but little slow down).oc to 1,5 ghz resolve this problem. i was using earlier "dual core" app to disable cpu1 completly. and it was works. NOW IT WON'T WORK. when i use option to disable cpu 1 completly on "dual core" app second core switch on always when needed(browses,games,etc...). fruit ninja is not dual core game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! now it's laggy. i must force both cores to minimize the lag but its laggy on FORCED DUAL CORE!!!. when it's not forced i got big lag every time when cpu1 go online in game(its turn on when need? and turn off when not needed???)(it's no needed at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). someone can say its not laggy but i am not a someone who got first android device. on neo v it runs much better. on galaxy s same. very much better! those phones got 1ghz cpu!. i got not f...... galaxy ace but dual core evo 3d and at my evo my game runs like on galaxy ace. this is just simple 2d game, not advenced 3d fireworks whitch my phone doesn't handles. can somebody tell me how to disable cpu1 COMPLETLY? before i crash my laggy baterry draining phone on wall
search for dualcore.apk which lets you disable cpu1 completely
echo'ing /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/online doesn't work too. that command only force both cpu's online and disable cpu1 but not completly. maybe i could search "hotplug_on" and "second_core_on" but i don't know where are they on miui rom.
I have cleaned up this thread and I strongly warn you that any more flaming and trolling in here and I will infract every last one of you under zero tolerance. I dont care if you have 10 posts or 5000 posts. No cussing or name calling. That goes for everyone. As for the OP...I suggest when people are trying to help you that you actually take their help and suggestions and not get mad when you dont get the answers you want.
i found kernel on other site than xda. completly disabling cpu1 is not working but fruit ninja now run like crazy. other 3d games works better too and my phone is not hot!
echo "999" > /sys/kernel/msm_mpdecision/conf/nwns_threshold_up
this command disables cpu1 completly

my sgs2 kept getting a little hot and i also felt that the batterylife wasn't bad, but could be better.
so i decided to underclock it to 500mhz and see what happens.
after all, it's a dualcore and 500mhz shouldn't feel like...500mhz right?
but it did feel like 500mhz with everything choppy and so on..
perhaps i just have the wrong concept of how dualcores are supposed to work....or perhaps gingerbread/apps/filesystem isnt yet fully optimized for dualcore? i don't know.
i decided to look for some sort of system monitoring app that'd show individual core usage...like "Tablet cpu usage monitor". but found none
StabilityTest 1.5 sometimes only shows 1 core. probably just the app's problem....
thoughts anyone?
edit: i just realised one thing...though havent tried it enough times to say it's something meaningful. from a fresh reboot, if i don't open SetCPU, StabilityTest v1.5 detects just the 1 core. then if i close Stability Test, open SetCPU, let it have its permission then back out, StabilityTest would then show 2 cores.
I use OS monitor. I found that Wifi Sharing was killing my battery, by takin up 20-30% of CPU time and causing the CPU to clovk itself to 1000 MHz! So using OS monitor, I killed the process and the battery drain goes away (until wifi sharing starts itself up again!)
yer i use osmonitor too but it doesn't display individual cores D:
and yes i probably check my cpu usage about twice a day specifically to make sure wifisharing isnt on and eating up my batt. im surprised samsung didnt fix this with their updates..
im very interested in this too, especially underclock + lower voltage for CPU - could drastically increase battery life.
Try disabling a whole bunch of default apps that come with the phone if you havernt already, details here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1069924&page=2
And report back your findings ???
plenty of battery threads lets not make another, we know there is a battery problem they say its 2.3.3 related to the dual cores.
As for wifi it might have something to do with your router the dlink dir 655 router was having problems with this phone, i imagine maybe other dlink routers have the same issue.
Get a app called juice defender it shuts of any wifi that is not in use ( when phone is in sleep mode ). it also works with 3g data.
Hope that helped
i suppose im more interested in the dualcore aspects here...rather than the batterylife. sorry i didnt really make it clear
i did search up on "dualcore optimization" here in the forum but there really isnt much about it
for example..what is the state of gingerbread's dualcore optimization? what about apps etc
i think i'll also do some googling myself
I don't think Gingerbread is dual core optimized but the underlying Linux kernel should take advantage of the dual core for multitasking. Every app using multiple threads will use the dual core too.
Ok so im rooted and overclocked and was using setcpu then decided i wanna try something different so i tried system tuner! When i checked the cpu it said that one of the processors are off line! Then i pressed the info button and sure enough it says only reading one! So i went through the settings and found force both cores online!
Since then i have no lag and virtually no checkerboarding on the web! Anyway i was just wondering if im the only one who noticed this and maybe it could help those who say that they are still getting lag on they're roms using dag's kernel!
Also i hope devs will notice this thread since i can't post there yet and take advantage of this how ever they can!
Now don't quote me on this but most likely the second core only turns on for processor intensive activities such as high graphics games or multiple programs running at once. I do find it hard to believe that it would be totally disabled. Most likely this is done to conserve battery.

Okay if this really is the case I could also see at&t disabling the second core totally to save battery because of lte but i guess it will take a dev that has more experience with how qualcomm's multicore cpus work in android. report back with differences in battery life like how much faster does it drain now that both cores are forced on.
if you want both cores on click on boot settings and enable force all cpus online. that heats up your phone and eats more battery though+I do not see any benefits doing that.

I've had it like this for 4 days on average i will take of the charger at 8am now is 8:30pm and i have 27% but i use my navigation for my Job! By 10:30 or so ill have 15% and recharge!
Settings
1836 max
192 min
Governer
Smartassv2
Both cores pushing
Screen off
192 max
In call
384 max
Tomorrow ill post some pics of battery life usage!
And my phone doesn't get any hotter than normal not even while using my navi! Mostly it just gives no lag and better rendering in the browser/maps/etc!!
I was under the impression that Gingerbread didn't fully utilize multiple cores. Need HC or ICS...

Same, but having a better processor helps. Like exynos. I bet once we update to ics if it ever happens, the differences will be only minor between processors, as it runs so nice.
Got system tuner pro, and it shows speed bars on both cpus running? I didn't change a thing?

Really? I switched Roms twice today and had to reset that each time! Cpu.0 online Cpu.1 offline! Like i said am i the only one? Lets hear from more people and let us know of any lag or rendering changes after turning on both cpu's! Battery too, i'll post mine tomorrow.
I thought I'd play and I have CPU0 running and CPU1 running.

Not entirely true.. the Galaxy Nexus has a kernel governor that turns one core off when the SCREEN IS OFF, but not when the phone is being used. Multiple kernel creators have since implemented this into their kernels. It is called "hot plugging" and it just turns CPU 1 offline when the screen is off and turns it back on when the screen is on

Just checked mine, rooted and OC with DaG's 0.1 version (first version). When I looked, it said the second CPU was offline. Changed it to online, we'll see how that impacts battery life.
How much of an advantage is smartassv2 anyway?
I just tried this with system tuner and both cpus were working but wone was of and on and zero was always on.
I am running stock rooted. If you just sit yhere and watch it you will see tje sevond core fires and shuts down alot.

Same for me (CPU 0 on, CPU1 off, most times) and I'll say I have noticed no real changes in functionality (speed, rendering, etc) or battery life...
I guess jury is still out or is this a YMMV kind of thing?
I installed system runner and watched the cpus. One was on and the other kicked in periodically
Mine said it was offline as well. Forced it on and am not noticing any difference in speed or temp.
Ill leave it like this to test it further.

As far as I know yes you must have super user permission to alter such system activities
I don't know why everyone is in such a rush to force the second core online, it turns on and off when it needs to.
At first: sorry for just using Google Translate... I have not much time to write everything new!
Problem:
After some time, the ongoing CPU / GPU load overclocked the processor down and the maximum stroke is limited to 820MHz. Under Android 2.3 that was detected with the tool Stability Test, which but now with Android 4.0 makes the Xperia S problems and freezes the display after 2min.
clearly evident in the following games / applications:
- Asphalt 7: Heat - after 10 to 15 minutes
- Mass Effect - Infiltrator - after 10 to 15 minutes
- Shadow Gun - after 10 to 15 minutes
- N64 Emulator (FREE) on TV over HDMI HDMI after about 20 or 25 minutes
- Dungeon Hunter 3 (FREE) - on charger during the third mission
- Real Football (FREE) - after 20 or 30 minutes... Keep the half-time Screen on for 15 minutes should bring the effect faster
- Temple Run Brave - thx @ monivan
Should you it with other games or the best tools that can follow the show cpu speed permanently, please post here. the above StabilityTest works definitely NOT currently until an update from the developer Comes
Here a short example Video in german... if you move Forward to 3:20 you will see the effect clearly after 3:30
ATTENTION! Please only Xperia S users participate in the survey, as the results will be forwarded to the developer and not with "I certainly do not" click just because you did not want to test this.

there is a solution from Bin4ry but it is a bit dangerous and we don't know if it has hardware-side-effects over a Long time...
I attached you a file... it is a config where the thermal throttling Trigger values are located at... it just sets the throttle value from 55 degrees to 70 degrees (CPU data sheet says Maximum temp is 80 degrees so it's inside his Limit) and the emergency shutdown from 70 degrees to 75 degrees....
there is also another emergency shutdown value for battery temp at 60 degrees because at more then 70 the battery may explode so: DON'T touch this values!!!
just unzip it and overwrite the existing one in /System/etc/
then reboot...
after that it will not throttle again but if you are charging and playing for a while (after 45 or 60 minutes) the phone get's damned hot!!!
so Bin4ry and I think, that the Xperia S has a massively failed Hardware design with this old CPU and bad heat Management!!!
EDIT: hmm who is the one without any Problems? a Statement what was tested would be nice you are the first one (out of 15 People voted in both Forums together) who has no problems
I'm on stock rom. Yesterday I played Virtua Tennis for 3 hours, and last night played Virtua Tennis with a friend, phone slightly heated, but not over heated also never had any problem !!! but my Arc is over heating
hmm ok but you should try with games listed above... the Problem is, that other games could have limited fps to save Hardware power... that's the reason why i listed These games
Maybe the best solution is to underclock the phone to 1-1,2 Ghz, so that it won't get this hot when playing games... I think a custom kernel is necessary for that but my BL is locked.... Is there anybody who can try this out and report?
lol...
i payed 600 EUROS for a phone with 1,5GHz dualcore CPU! i will NOT underclock it to make it run more stable
the best solution is to proove that the Xperia S has a Hardware issue that can't be fixed and forece sony to bring you an Exchange device with the same Price value like you have paid or you get your money back...

no this is a HARDWARE Problem... so there are two possibilities... the device clocks down much tooo early and games start to lag (like on stock FW) or it throttles just at higher temps (some custom roms with other throttle values) but then the Xperia becomes extremely hot!

I see, I'm still using my arc, it does get hot too while playing HD games it reaches upto 39degrees
I was planning to get XS, playing games is my priority, but when i read this thread im having second thoughts now
I got my Xperia SL, i have yet to test this problem
If you want gaming go for a tegra handset like HTC one X I think it's the best deal
Sent from my LT22i using xda premium
Same here, after playing like 30 min NFSMW my XS is extremendly hot and lag (Lag in game and sometime after close this)
Games with lag:
Gta 3 full settings (30~ 40 min)
NFSMW (30 ~ 40)
N64oid (30-40)
100floor (Jesus IS A 2D game)
Im on full stock .55
I think we need to talk with sony about the minimun speed after overheating from 820 mhz to 1ghz
PS: mods, can you move to xs forum plz?
htc one x+ stock 4.1.1 - 1.16.401.6
rooted
after all my lags ... tryd as u recommended to use cpu set and put my device on maximum cpu to try gaming...
the game play better in 20% but still have some lags (dead trigger)
and my cpu cant push to 1700mhz...
i did min 1700 and max 1700 on max proff... and cpu clock stick to 1600mhz...
maby i got failuer on cpu??
i did notice before that my battry draind very fast....
and battry and camera area get overheat very fast in games... !!overheat!!!! means that u almost cant move ur hands on the tuch cuz its make them stikky
and if i go to stteings>developer options >show cpu usege... i can see only 3 cores working and not 4.. as i shueld see...
(battrey save is off)
why im allwas stuck with the failur products ]=
]=
lol. You have me a nice little laugh.
DON'T put your phone at min 1700MHz. You will basically fry out the phone.
Also, why would you be going passed 1700MHz? The phone has a 1.7GHz processor. 1.7GHz = 1700MHz.
IF you want to go passed 1700MHz, you have to wait for a custom kernel that supports overclocking. Until then, you will not go passed the factory speed of 1700MHz.
MAKE SURE TO SET THE MIN BACK TO IT WAS!!! anything over 434 is practically useless. It'll just drain your battery, overheat the phone and fry your phone out, especially when min and max is at 1700MHz!
Oh yeah. If you use SetCPU, you have to choose "Set on Boot". But make sure you give it the right settings or your phone will bootloop.
the point is that i dont try to pass the 1700... but i cant reach him..... cant pass the 1600.... im not try to oc it...
its gets overheat with or without the cpuset ... and was like this from the moment i did unbox the phone...same as for the lags... (eaven in homescreen)
the battrey drain out eaven on low usege games... games that i did play on my iphone 3gs for 4-5 houers in and still had 30% left now drain my battry in 2-3 houers...
so much issues with stock normal phone somthing maby worng here dont u think?
and i bet for the hadware ... and not the software
for gaming first try the geming boost app (use search and you'll find it) this should fix most of your problems.
and further: don't set your CPU at constant maximum, this will eat your battery for breakfast.
keep the min/max values stock and if you still have lags in gaming you could try other governors with this app. but as i said... first try the gaming boost app, that really should do the trick
So you are saying your phone wont run at 1600mhz. How are you testing this? please explain in detail what software you are using and what test etc. I agree with the gaming booster app for gaming issue but it seems you are having greater issues. a 1700mhz phone should run at 1600mhz. We'll help you figure it out just need a little more info.

tested using cpuset... if i try to push it to 1700 he dosnt pass the 1600mhz just capped there....
100mhz diffrent is huge!!! not beacuse of the numbers... just beacuse its pointed about heavy issue... with electric or volt's failur or maby eaven failur cpu product
cpusets gets me 15% better gaming but still lag and somthims shatter
with game boost
almost the same ... a little bit smoother... but still dead trigger lag alot... and after 10min of gameplay its getting hot and the fps hard drop almost to slowmotion ...
shadowgun working good ...
gta 3 1.3 tegra moded work so bad and laggy still
dead trigger still lags
beach buggy blitz lags too (alot after 10min of gameplay)

I noticed, that the count off active cores is most of the time only or max two cores.even in gaming or benchmarking...
Could this be the problem for the bad gaming performance since jb update?on playing vice city i recogniced that the framerate raises a lot when all four cores are active.this happens some time for a few seconds, then it returns back to one or two active cores and the game starts lagging....
Any solution so far?or is there anybody still on ics to test if it is the same activitie there?
I used cpu stats to tes cause it shows cores activities in statusbar.
No one?doesnt really anybody give a s**t bout this tablet???
Know how you feel, I have a htc desire phone which is running for 3years and still has (few) active developers.. Here's like nobody home.. Probably because bootloader is still locked.. I don't have time atm but I really want to try to root my xperia tablet.. We'll see what the future holds..
For the cores.. Probably bad tuning by Sony devs, this is likely how they managed battery to last longer, ok but not for gaming..
They upgraded to kernel 3 which is a good thing, but they kinda f***** it up..
Know you're not alone and don't forget anything is possible..!!

Hi, since i finally can post here, Yes, the Xperia tablet S with the Tegra3 will only run on 2 cores.
I know how to fix this,
First off, factory reset (backup blabla) Why? Because when you update to jb and dont factory reset after the upgrade, it will be very laggy and buggy, dunno why, it try it. - could also just skip this if you dont want to back up and etc
Second, install an app calld tegra overclock.
Third, after that, open the app, go to core count, enable all cores, enable on boot, done, should run way way smoother and faster.
And last, thanks button if this worked
Note: App isnt free. but uhm, google
