The solution to your problem is here:forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1837434&highlight=hardware+id
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII
I'm having the same problem, and none of the solutions mentioned works for me.
The problem only occurs when the phone is connected to my machine running Windows 7 64-bit. It doesn't happen on another computer running 32-bit Windows 7.
I assume the problems lies with the 64-bit drivers.

Try this:
Uninstall Samsung drivers, reboot pc then reinstall Samsung drivers in compatibility mode.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a try.
To do that would I just uninstall Kies, reboot, and then reinstall Kies using Windows XP Compatibility mode?
Sounds like its completely nothing to do with Samsung/Kies. The problem lies within Windows update I believe.

I had already tried that before I posted here - several times in fact. It was the "compatibility mode" you mentioned that I was interested in trying. How do I do that? Is that just a matter of reinstalling Kies in Windows XP compatibility mode?
Yes. Install it in compatibility mode for Vista but Xp.
I know you have tried my steps before but just follow it. Replace install kies with install kies in compatibility mode

Just to update this, I followed the procedure you suggested and reinstalled Kies in Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) Compatibility Mode. After rebooting the same problem happened again.
I then uninstalled Kies and repeated everything again, this time installing and running in Windows XP (Service Pack 3) Compatibility Mode.
That seemed better at first, but now I'm getting the "Hardware Id Missing" balloon come up again and Kies cannot see the phone.
Thanks for your help, but I'm still looking for a solution to this problem if anybody has one.

I had the same problem I think it's the 64 bit system and samsung's new update of drivers something that help me was
1. When you plug in your device on your phone screen it has a usb symbol at the top pull down the notification bar
2. Press Connected as media device (mtp)
3. Change from media device (mpt) to camera (ptp)
4 . It should work now

I have tried all 4 ports on my laptop and the SAMSUNG MTP DRIVER for Kies still fails to install, I have deleted it and reinstalled, manually pointed it to the USB Driver directory and yet it still fails, anyone any ideas?
Did you try rebooting the phone? Kies also didn't recognized mine and a reboot fixed this.
Tried a reboot still no good DRIVER NOT SUCCESSFULLY INSTALLED
Millions of posts on this subject a read of them may find a solution .
Laptops do seem more of a problem in this regard .

Kies has an option to install the correct drivers for it on the computer, have you tried that option? I believe its under tools.

Yes, same problem
Right well problem half solved, had to phone Samsung, I had to tick USB Debugging, so ticked that all drivers installed correctly with no errors, I then had to untick and reconnect, so did that, it goes through installing drivers again and once again fails and phone still not detected. Samsung might copy a few things from apple, but the slogan "It just works" doesn't appear to be one of them.
Wasted 3 hours on this, time to admit defeat, is Kies really needed anyway? I can get music etc on the phone fine without it.
You only need Kies for official updates as opposed to stock Samsung updates via XDA .Well before Kies updates also .

It's obvious isn't it? The issue was Vista.
I had the same problem with Kies under Win7 x64.
Latest Kies, latest USB drives.
What got it to work, was switching back to TwLauncher instead of MXHome I was using at the time.
No idea why the laucher affected the USB interface.

I might give this a shot. I somehow managed to miracle a connection to Kies today, just don't ask me to do it again. Typically it's a no go. Also on Win7 64 bit, laptop.
This was an issue pre and post root. I may just back up my phone the old fashioned way if it continues to be a PITA.
I had this and noticed when i plugged it in, the windows connection sound would play but would play the disconnected sound immediatley when the mtp mode was launched in the phone. A second later the connected sound would play again but kies didn't find the phone.
I got round this by getting kies to start when phone is connected. This remains the only way it will recognise my phone

Does your phone connect normally via USB to the computer ? completely uninstall and re-install via a fresh download of KIES. Clear your Temp, %Temp% and prefetch folders. Check if the cable is faulty or not. One of these is bound to help you.
I have tried reinstalling keis and done everything i can think of but nothing seems to help. Before the update of kies my phone used to be able to connect via usb like normal ever since the update its all gone to pot

First of all, I must say that KIES is one of the worst pieces of software I have ever seen. It is buggy and you must hope it will work eventually.
I got one successful with my old phone (galaxy 551) after updating via ODIN first to the correct firmware for my country.
But with my current Galaxy S2 I had to go to the repair center who used ODIN to get the right version on my phone.
I now have made KIES work on my windows 7 machine. I had to install the UK version (not the country version) and used the connection problem wizard to reinstall the drivers. Now it says I have the current version of my firmware.
To go back to your problem. It would help if you post which OS you are on and which version of the firmware you have currently installed ?
Also have you USB error detection off in the settings of your Galaxy S2 ?
Hi,

Make sure your S3 isn't plugged into your PC at the time. For some reason Kies wouldn't install for me while my S3 was plugged into my computer. Hope this helps...
Yep. Don't use it! Use Odin to flash firmware.

You can use the SAMSUNG USB Drivers instead of Kies.

This is because of java - I can't remember which way round it is, but you either need to install it, update or uninstall it to get Kies to go past hotfix. I think its install
It's a common problem!
So, trying to install the driver exe file from Samsung's website and it won't work. Keeps saying that it failed to install drivers. And, if I have the phone as USB Debugging enabled, it'll pop up with 2 out of 4 that says it failed to install.
My roommate was able to install the .exe file on his Windows 8 beta laptop (I'm running Windows 7 64-bit) without a problem. And, the phone installed fine on his laptop as well. For me, no.
If USB Debugging is not enabled, then yeah, the phone is fine. But, since I want to root this thing, it won't accept the drivers. And, nowhere on Google, searching or Samsung's website provides me any answers whatsoever.
I've done:
Going through regedit and deleting all things Samsung related
Deleted every Samsung folder on my hard drive
Rebooted the computer
Uninstalled the drivers
Reinstalled multiple times
Downloading and installing Kies (did not install any drivers, still failed)
I've done everything I can possibly think of. Couldn't find any answers on here, either. And, doesn't help that the search function is broken.
So, anyone have any idea on how to fix this? And, please do not say "Reinstall Windows" because that's just ridiculous and I shouldn't have to do that for a simple phone driver install. I had my Epic 4G before and that all went smoothly.
Go do something in control panel and uninstall the samsung drivers that you already have on your comp
Then try installing
But I reccomend reinstalling windows

And, I'm not reinstalling Windows all over again just for this phone, as I also said. But, it doesn't matter, I already got it rooted through the roommate's laptop.
EDIT: I managed to get it to work. My other half had similar problems with device drivers so just had to have me remove the phone from USB, uninstall driver and then plug the phone back in. And, it actually worked.
Hi all, I understand this issue has been posted many times but I may have a different issue than most. Both of my s2 phones cant be seen by Odin in debugging mode but recognized when booted up.
1. I have checked and both Samsung USB and ADB drivers are installed fine and seen in devices and printers within windows 7. (tried different flavours of the driver too)
2. Debugging mode is on before going into download mode
3. I have tried 2 known working cables as I used them previously to update.
4. Tried 3 different versions of Odin
5. Tried 4 different USB ports
One is on stock android ICS and the other on the wrong version of ICS I9100P instead of I9100. I did this in error when first playing with ROMs.
I haven't tried it on another machine although that may be an option later next week. I am guessing it has to be the PC but at a loss as to what could be causing it.
Any help would be appreciated since I have been playing around with this for 4 hours and getting no where.
thanks in advance
Chris
Well Chris, it's time for you to download Kies.
And close the antivirus just in case.
Laptops are good for this kind of thing too.

I tried rebooting and disabling the antivirus but it made no difference. Never tried it without kies installed, although I opened up task manager and killed all related processes to do with kies. I suppose its something to try tonight!
I checked to see if kies would see the devices and the GT-I9100 Stock ROM connected fine but the fact that I have a foreign rom on the other one causes issue.
Its an odd one

Its worth a try mate, I will give it a go tonight.
I have been going over it in my head. It has to be the adb driver as it works in kies, gets recognised by odin when turned on and affects multiple devices. What really puzzles me is that when in download mode the driver loads fine and the phone is showing in devices and printers. The only thing not seeing it is odin.
Try 3 odin versions at least.
Another usb port/cable.
Another pc/laptop.
