The phone service is the easiest way to find out. What provider is her phone on?
Go to hboot, shooter is cdma, and shooter_u is gsm
Gsm phones have a sim card
Sprint and virgin mobile are cdma

Moving to Q&A
I have a Rogers Evo, unlocked, go here: http://www.mobifree.ca/
costs $10, just need to provide them your IMEI.
Got mine in a few hours.
*edit
holy necrobump
CellUnlocker worked for me
I have a Rogers Evo 3D too and I got it unlocked through cellunlocker dot net for ~$8. Just as amace04 did, I provided my IMEI and within an hour and a half they sent me the code which it seemed to work without a hitch (haven't had a chance to test the data side of it). I will pass back here and update this, after I test it properly in a few weeks.
As promised I am checking back in. I am in Jamaica using the phone which was unlocked from Rogers. So far I have used it with SIM cards from 2 mobile networks here and everything works perfectly (both voice and data). My only complaint which has nothing to do with phone or unlocking service is that 3G coverage outside of the major cities is sparse.

This worked for me, and it was free. Apparently for GSM (with s-off) models only.
Wish I owned a GSM device when I'm out of the us. Is the GSM model capable of working in the U.S?

Hmmm I thought it was S-OFF because I was rooted, I was tired when I rooted my phone (Did Taxes earlier that night).
I now notice that it S-ON. How do you S-OFF? Do you need a wire (Like I remember flashing the firmware on my Nintendo DS having to physically complete a circuit I suppose enabled write access)?
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-gain-s-off-on-htc-evo-3d-with-revolutionary/
That method doesn't seem to need a wire, but I already have Revolutionary and see no option for S-OFF. It also mentions a beta key, but I never needed one to download Revolutionary, TBH I don't even remember where I got it from.

Ramjet's guide is the easiest to follow to get s-off. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889438
That says Spring and Virgin Mobile only, I'm with Rogers

Hey guys,
I think I know the answer, but i just want to make sure.
I am actually living in the United States, but I am moving to france in two months.
Before i'm leaving i would like to buy an HTC rezound. I just would like to know if i can unlock it and install a custom rom, And it will be working on any of the french networks ( with a sim card from a french network)
If you have an answer to my question. Please let me know.
Thanks.
Sure, but just buy a true GSM phone. It doesn't work 100%, as of now.
What do you when you say a true GSM phone ?
One that is not developed/sponsorised by any network ?

One that is designed to work on GSM networks. The Rezound can work on GSM networks, but it's not 100%.
Basically the GSM part of the Rezound is an added bonus, not a reason to buy the phone.
Something like the one X
Wanna ask some stupid question, what is unlocked phone? If I buy, still can use in my country?

My understanding is unlocking a phone only works for GSM phones as they use SIM cards. Unlocking it allows it to be used with other carriers on the GSM network. For a real example, I unlocked my wife's Samsung Captivate on AT&T and she gave it to her brother who was able to use it with T-Mobile. With CDMA phones, you don't unlock them. You have to flash certain things to the phone so it can be used with other CDMA carriers. Example, again, a real one, a guy at my work had an Evo 4G flashed to Metro PCS, however, I don't think he had 4G. To be honest, I think unlocking a phone is easier than flashing one to another carrier.
If anyone can elaborate further, please do.
EDIT: As for use in your country, that is outside my realm of knowledge. Never had to use a phone outside of the USA. Sorry, can't help there. By the way, where are you?
Yes. most other countries use GSM phones. Phones are usually locked to the carrier that sells them. Nowadays its very easy to unlock the sim. Once unlocked you should be able to insert any major carrier's sim card and phone should work just fine.
Unlocking bootloader and rooting phone is different than sim unlock.
They have a new device out, I don't know how well it works because I've never tried it but its out there:
http://www.dhgate.com/universal-sim...-cell/p-ff808081371757e4013726905fd16172.html
Also too, One way to unlock your phone for free in USA (I paid $9.00 for this information a long time ago) is call your phone company. Tell them that you'll be traveling abroad and need to Unlock your phone so you can use it over there.
They will email you the Unlock code for free after you give them your IEMI and serial number.
The method I used to unlock the Samsung Captivate was by rooting the phone and using a free app from the Market to give me the unlock code, which is now the Play Store, of course. All free. No phone calls made. Total of 20 minutes.

I think this is the best method for those who do not want to root. I'm not sure if the GSM Evo 3D is having the same HBOOT 1.5 issue that the CDMA folks are having.

Yeah, I'm over here in the good ol' US of A. I know GSM is more prominent outside of here. GSM tends to have the fastest data speeds, but, CDMA has the best cellular coverage.
how i can downgrade my htc one sprint from 4.4.2 to 4.1.2 to unlock it for gsm ??
You would have to S-Off to be able to do that. Is this for the Sprint version? If so, the international unlock works well, but if you want to use it in the US, you will most likely have a lot of connection issues trying to stay connected to the towers when you move. It likes to drop off and you have to reset it a couple of times to get service back. Very frustrating. If you don't have the Sprint version, disregard.

I dont know how to downgrade my Sprint HTC One runnin 4.4.2, I want to use it on a GSM network, I am a novice.
Please help me
Hey guys, I was considering buying a HTC Evo 3D and a bit confused about this. The things I'd like to know:
1. I've read that there are two types of this phone: CDMA and GSM. Could you guys explain what is the difference between the two?
2. Will the phone work properly if I order it from the US and use it in Hungary, Europe. There is no Verizon or Sprint here.
3. If I buy it and SIM unlock it can I use it here?
4. What is s-off?
5. What is your experience with the phone in general if you have it?
As a note: We can buy phones here too, but they cost too much. I'm not sure if they are CDMA or GSM though.
Thanks in advance guys, and have a nice day!
CDMA uses ESN/MEID which is hard coded into phone.
GSM uses sim cards.
There is more difference but those are the easiest to identify.
S-off is security off, and different from unlocking.
Unlocking allows custom rom and recovery.
s-off allows more, and makes things easier to do, but has greater risk of bricking the phone if you do something wrong.
I love the 3d, best phone.

Thanks for your answer!
Is there a reliable way to identify which phone uses which type? If I'll buy one I'll need to know if it accepts SIM cards.
So S-off is some kind of root, or similar?
Are we talking about the same "unlock"? I meant unlock as SIM unlock, so the phone accepts any kind od SIM card.
Do you know if there's a safe way to SIM unlock the phone, here on XDA? I have some experience with unlocking but I've never done it on an HTC.
We are talking about bootloader, unlock or s-off.
Sim unlock is different.
Also can tell by hboot version. Odd numbered seems to be gsm and even is cdma.

Yeah, I see. But do you know if there's a way tounlock these phones? I've seen some threads here that might me working but I'd like to know if you've used them.
Also a phone with a bad ESN is only blocked at the current carrier, right?

Bad ESN means it CDMA phone and those don't have SIM card slot. If you want to buy it from US search for GSM model. There is a way to SIM unlock every phone, but in most cases you have to pay for it

Thank you for your reply! Knowing this is valuable when buying from the US, yeah. I was looking for a free way to unlock it, through tutorials and such because I can't and wouldn't like to afford paying for it anyway!
I recently had a tough time flashing regional firmware to Samsung phones... When I flashed a Czech one or with a different carrier it didn't have signal. The EVO 3D's firware is not regional, right?
Greetings from Hungary!
US is a specific market and you should think twice before buying a phone from US. There are ways to SIM unlock Evo, but they require s-off. I suggest you do some serious reading before going through with your purchase. I know a guy who bought mint condition Evo 3d from US very cheap and now can only look at it and cry because he got CDMA version which doesn't have SIM card slot

Yeah I was lucky to discover this early! If there are no regional firwares I think it's a go.
Anything I need to know about S-OFF
A quick look at the forums and stuff tells me that it can be a bit complicated to do on some phones... Is it carrier dependant? Different HBOOTs can be S-OFFed differently?
