Hello guys,
first let me say that while I may be a noob to the forum I am not a noob to the search features and I used it extensively before making this post. However, the problem I have still remains.
My tablet will charge when connected to the PC, but the USB MTP options do not start on the tablet when plugged in. I have tried all of the suggestions, such as, uninstalling the USB drivers on my PC and reinstalling. I have also checked the advanced storage settings on the tablet and made sure that connection as MTP is checked.
I believe this started happening after I rooted my tablet using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1474971 But, I'm not sure if that's the issue.
Any ideas???
Any help you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
J
Note: Currently running Stock ICS 4.0.4, Kernel 3.1.10, Build IMM76.UELP
No one has had this issue?
Depending on what I've done last. In settings under developers options. I've left the usb debugging box checked or unchecked and when I switch it from one to the other the tab gets recognized.
Try unchecking usb debugging. You'll need to be disconnected from the PC to uncheck it.
Please don't flame me if I'm off base here. I'm just trying to help with my old man memory.

Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it...but I've already tried that a few times...
not having this fixed is getting frustrating!
Update
ok...So I've tried a couple of other ICS deodexed roms and I still have the same issue...The MTP connectivity will not start on the tablet...
Could this be hardware issue?
Not sure on stock ICS,I hated it and flashed cm10 with pershoot kernel, after that I had the same problem as yu,try Settings>storage>three dots on top right corner of screen>USB computer connection>enable media device....worked for me,I also had the debugger checked off....Or if that isnt it,Bad usb cable??? (EDIT) No go for me ethier,I can only mount the PTP part, not the USB storage
Thanks for your input foxcartman, but I already tried that and it still doesn't work.
more troubleshooting...
ok...so I've tried some more trobleshooting...
I have an HDMI adapter, which works just fine.
I've also tried an SD card adapter and the USB cable adapter, the tablet recognizes both but it does not read any data. ie: the pictures I had on the SD card.
I'm waiting to get another USB cable to see if that's the issue and I'll report back.
Thank you, my new lord & saviour

Hello everyone,
I am a new user of galaxy s2 i777. I have been trying to connect the phone in usb mass storage mode.
I have gone through a lot of threads in this forum, none of them give a clear idea as to what to do.
some say install kies some say something else... I have tried many things. all of them dont seem to work.
Can anyone please guide me in a clear cut was as to what to do?
Thanks guys.
Out of the box, by the default, when plugging, usb icon will and should be displayed on the notification; pull the notification down then tap to connect the usb mass storage mode. Your PC should recognize it now.
Note: try more than one usb port.
Go to settings->wireless and network->usb utilities follow instructions
I ran into that problem after using one my sisters chargers when i was visiting my parents house. Apparently the usb cable bent the connector in my phones port. I ended up bending it back and it has worked like a charm since then
Or enable USB DEBUGGING option. If you do that as soon as you plug into any computer, the option to transfer files will automatically show in your notification/status bar.

To clarify:
The Galaxy S II defaults to MTP mode (media mode, similar to iPhone).
Unlike said iPhone however, we can change ours back to the UMS (USB Mass Storage) mode by enabling USB debugging.
I never found it documented anywhere, I just ran into by accident when enabling USB debugging for TB and MTP stopped working.
It took me a while to figure out why.
I actually like MTP mode (it's faster and easier to use, except in linux as I understand).
The "USB Utilities" option seems to be a per-use setting (not 100% sure, never used it). However USB debugging is a "set and forget" option.
Use steps I quoted above to enable it.
After that when you plug it in, you can select to mount it to the PC via the notification bar.
Hope that helps.
EDIT: It looks like this option was posted by at least one other person on here before: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20204599&postcount=12
Tried everything
Guys,
I have enabled USB debugging mode as you have recommended and and it still does not work. I am always getting the notification on windows as "USB device not recognized".
I have tried everything. i have installed the USB driver for I777 from the samsung website. That did not work.
Another strange thing. I tried "Wireless and Network>USB utilities>Connect storage to PC" on my FRIENDS computers(Windows 7), it works.! My phone connects in mass storage mode and I am able to transfer files as usual. I did not install any software on my friends computers.
But when i do the same thing on my WINDOWS 7 PC, it does not work. I use a Lenovo T420i with factory software installed.
I am a noob in the drivers department. Can anyone please tell me what to do.
Thank you.
Help appreciated.
you say "new user" which implies stock rom. if what they are asking you to do is not working, then i believe you might need to exchange the phone. if you have an ICS rom on it, then i think that you might be stuck with MTP until you switch back to Gingerbread. i might be wrong.
Is Anti-virus disabled on your computer? Seems I've heard that it should be, but can't find where... Also, there may be different drivers for a 64-bit machine (W7?) vs. 32-bit.
Have u tried a different USB port or cable on your PC?

Firstly, it's how amazing you are. You asked a question and only returns to it TWO months after? Obviously, it doesn't bother you that much.
Secondly, however, we're here to help.
About your friend computer, a. maybe he did install the Samsung USB driver already or b. maybe, at that time, you are using MTP mode.
Anyway, forget about his computer, let's get it work on yours.
I personally think the USB driver that you've downloaded from their website WOULD NOT work. I don't know why but I can tell you that it did not work for me. Give me some times to dig into my files or search again on this site for the CORRECT driver. You can also help me and yourself by continue to search for this on this xda site since I got it from here too.
Thirdly, along side with the 2nd above, do try different usb cables, do try on different usb ports
I can enable the USB mode on my note, but when browsing the phone with my computer (Mac & PC) I can not see the contents of the SD card?
EDIT: nevermind, rebooted phone and is working now.

First of all I appreciate the help you are giving me.
I am sorry if I offended you by not returning for quite a long time to post.
I have now resolved the problem and would like to share for everyone's benefit over here.
The problem was not with the software, it was with the hardware. I followed all the suggestions given over here and was in the end convinced that there should be a problem with my motherboard. This is surprising because my Flash Drive and USB mouse all work with my laptop without any glitches. But my phone(i777) and any other android phone would not connect to the computer. It would say device not recognized.
My nook e-reader which used to work perfectly started acting strange, it would be detected but i would not be able to transfer files onto the nook. So now I ws convinced that this was a hardware problem.
So I called up lenovo and showed them this problem via some software where i could share my screen with them. They asked me if a USB flash drive was working and I said yes. They reply saying that everything is perfect with your laptop and cut the call. I was offended , these lenovo support guys would not understand that it was a complex problem.
So I went to a local MicroCentre which had support for lenovo servicing and showed this problem to a technician. He was convinced that there was some problem and got my motherboard replaced . And voila there connects my android to my computer in USB mode..!
I would like to thank everyone for their help and taking time out to post here.
My laptop: Lenovo T420i with i3. looks like this was a case with my laptop only. a person i know has a t420(i5) in which my phone connected without any glitches.
Thank you for your help everyone. Hope to be helpful in return in the near future.
Hey all,
My roommate recently bought a Galaxy Tablet 10.1 and it just now wont connect to the computer.
When the device is plugged into the computer (we tried both a mac and a pc with updated kies mini installed on both) and the tablet says USB is connected, but it doesn't show up on the pc.
Any ideas?
We had it connected earlier in the day, and know it won't work. I'm puzzled.
I've got an infuse, but i've never had anything like this happen before.
Try going into settings> applications> development and tick or un-tick usb debugging. Might have to try both settings plugging and unplugging from the computer to finally get it to come up. Give it a couple minutes between each to be sure its going to see it or not.
This has worked for me in the past when something changes and I don't know what. Also re-installing the drivers on the computer has helped before for some reason. I'm using Windows7 so YMMV.
Let us know what helps.

Are you stating it's not showing up as a storage drive in Windows when using USB, or are you stating KIES cannot see the tablet (or both)? If Kies, welcome to the club - you are far from alone. I know of no known solution (that topic has been beaten to death on all forums). Togling the USB dedub option may help with respect to Windows seeing it as a storage drive (try another USB port, too), but with respect to Kies, if you find a solution (that you can duplicate) please share. The only way I've ever been able to get Kies to work twice on the same computer was to reset the tablet back to factory defaults - at which point, I can connect VIA Kies one more time, then back to square one.
Good luck!

Kies see's the device, but wont connect. Windows doesn't see if as a USB device.
We tried toggling the USB Debugging switch to no avail.
On my infuse when i plug it into my laptop i have to go to the notification window, click on the usb connected notification, and then select mass storage mode.
We get the notification on the tab, but when i click on it nothing happens...

nothing is supposed to happen. it uses MTP not mass storage. On your laptop, go to "Computer"...it should be there under a portable media device.
if that doesn't work....make sure USB debugging is UNCHECKED...it will NOT work with it checked.
If all that doesn't work..try another USB port
I believe the issue is on a windows machine it usually pops up a box where you can select what you want to do. Such as open folder to view files, etc... and this isn't happening. Probably wrong in my thinking but who knows.

Ezcats Re: Nothing should happen.
This is not entirely accurate. My experience parallels Benzoman's statement. Each and everytime I connect my 10.1 4G (GT-7500D), Windows does indeed open a box asking what I'd like to do with it. It does show up under Computer as a device, and I can readily access it to copy files (however, Kies won't connect... Kies recognized that fact that I plugged it in, and attempts to connect, but never does - again, unless I reset it to factory in which case Kies not only finds it, but will connect to it - once).

So today I noticed that my battery was about to die and I tried charging my phone and it wouldn't recognize that it was plugged into the mini-usb cable at all. Cleaned the port and pulled the battery and now it will will charge through the cable, but neither my phone nor my PC appear to realize that the two are connected, and ... strangest of all ...
ALL USB OPTIONS ARE NOW MISSING FROM MY PHONE'S MENU.
There are no USB options under "Wireless and network settings."
Under "applications\development" I can select "Android debugging," but that is it. And it doesn't seem to do anything. My phone just charges when connected to my PC and that is it.
No "mass storage" option available anywhere. It was there yesterday--gone today.
I'm running CM 7.2.0 RC2.
The ONLY thing I can think that I did was to delete a genie widget folder from my phone the last time it was connected to my PC. I looked it up first and it is supposed to be a news and weather app which I have never used and which I didn't even know was on there ... Could that have somehow removed USB options from phone's menu?
Also the mini-usb connection is definitely loose--if I jiggle it stops charging the battery--so it could be a hardware problem ... but how would a hardware problem remove all USB options from the software?
Any advice greatly appreciated! I use my phone as an MP3 player and not being able to put music on there is just going to ruin things for me ....

Sounds like you have a bad usb port on your phone. First thing I would try is a new usb cable from the T-Mobile store. If that doesn't work then you definitely have a defected usb port. www.mobiletechvideos.com will repair your usb port on the phone, it runs around 40 bucks but the usb cable will only be around $15. I thought my usb port was bad but it turned out to be a defected cable. Thankfully.
Ps: the news and weather app deletion should not effect usb mass storage what so ever.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try titanium back up.
All: I bought a new mini usb cord and tried it out. As soon as I connected my phone to my laptop, my phone displayed a "mass storage" message and I thought "Yes!" It's working! But then the message went away and my laptop displayed a message stating that there was a problem with the hardware I'd connected ...
Since then, nothing. It is exactly the same as before: phone will charge, but nothing else.
So it must be a hardware problem with the phone, or the ROM got corrupted and should be reflashed. I wish I could know for sure before pursuing either option ...
Which would be more likely to actually remove USB settings from the options menu? That is the thing I still can't figure out ...

In that case you should just reflash the ROM or flash a completely new ROM to see if that's the issue, considering that is the free option. If that doesn't work then it would have to be a bad usb port on your phone, which is a 45 dollar option from mobiletechvideos.com. . When you flash a ROM make sure you wipe data, cache and dalvik cache. I would format the system partition as well, just to make sure you get a fresh install.

If the pictures and videos are on your external sd card then you can just take it out as a precaution.
There may be an app that can do this for you if you're pics and vids are on the internal memory, since you can't connect to your pc. Google a app that backs up pictures and videos, you may find something. Just to clarify, you do have Samsung phone drivers installed on your pc, correct? You can't connect to mass storage through the computer unless you have the correct drivers installed. Also, as far as I know there is only one usb option you need checked to get in mass storage mode, and that's usb debugging. You say all other usb option are gone but that is the only option I have ever seen on any ROM, unless your talking about adb over network, which I don't think you will need to mess with that.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
Your pictures should be fine. Wiping only wipes the ROM for the most part.
Thanks Itz and FaultException for your responses!
I managed to back up my videos and pictures, by uploading them to mediafire from my phone.
I decided to bite the bullet. I went into recovery to reflash, wiped everything, went to install the zips, and ... there were no zips. I know I didn't delete them from the last time I installed a ROM, which was quite recent. But they were gone. I can't add them by connecting to my PC, and I can't download them directly onto my phone, because now ... I can't boot into the ROM. My nandroid backup does not work .... Man. This is going to be a fun evening.
I ended up pulling the external SD card, putting it into my mp3 player, downloading the zips onto that, put it back into my phone, and install from there (even though I know you're supposed to install from internal memory, not external.)
It worked just fine. I have a brand new, fresh installation of CM7. And .... I still can't connect to my PC via USB. It will charge, but that is it.
Yes, my PC has the required Samsung drivers, at least I put them on their previously. And in any event my laptop with windows 7 automatically recognized my phone before this issue began, without me installing anything extra ... Now, it will not.
It has to be a hardware issue with the port.
Now I have to decide whether it is worth trying to get it fixed, sending it off, etc, or if I should just start looking for a used Galaxy II on craigslist ...

At least your up and running now and your phone can charge, so that's a plus. I encouraged a member a few weeks back who had a bad usb port, to send his phone to www.mobiletechvideos.com because they are a very trusted source. He was up and running when he got his phone back and went ahead to say the service was great and had tracking on the package I believe. Here is the thread link, in case you want to read it.

Anyone know what could be preventing me from doing it? I just get a message that says: "Could not move file."
For the past couple of months I've been having the problem that my phone auto-mounts the usb storage whenever I plug it in to the computer to charge. I've done some research and found that Double twist and Winamp apps have automount as a setting, but I'm not running either of those. I'm running speed rom 7.5 as my daily driver. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Go to settings, and there should be an option that says "Connect to PC".
From there, you can change the default settings or have it always ask you.
doesn't seem like there's any such option in Speed Rom 7.5

Just installed 7.5, and I see what you mean. But however, when I plug my phone to the PC, a notification pops up, notifying me that it is connected to PC and is set to charge-only mode. I still can press on that and it'll allow me to change the modes. Hm.

Yeah thanks for the help, my phone always did that too until a couple of months ago. I'm thinking it might be an app, but i'm totally stumped as to which one.

So I did a full wipe and re-flashed and the problem is fixed now. Had to kind of start from scratch because the problem would come back if I restored data from my nandroid backup, but it's worth it.
Im very new to samsung (coming from HTC DNA) so please excuse me if this is a dumb question, but, is there a special way to transfer files from my pc to phone through usb? Unbelievably, I cant get it to work. I've been resorting to using my sdcard adapter and the process is mildly frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Unfortunately I cannot get it to work either. Since my first flash I started getting "missing hardware id' but it would work..... Then it worked less abs less. And now I cannot connect via usb to transfer files T all.... So I gave up.
Some alternatives.
AIRDROID: let's you edit/ upload/ download and change files including system files over your personal wifi network... I use this.
Or an Otg cBle and a flash drive
Or the annoying micro sd adapter.
From what I've read I think the only way to fix my problem is for me to flash back to stock I'm not sure if you have the same problem as me or not

Oh wow... Hmm I'm not sure if it would help but do you have usb debugging ticked in the developer options?

Thats funny, ive been using the usb from my 'ol rezound, so I tried using my samsung one and now I can drag and drop but after only about ten to fifteen seconds windows stops and a window pops up saying that the files cant be copied either because the device is busy or it has been unplugged. :/ I tried disabling usb debugging and my pc fails to install the driver software, maybe this is my problem? Also in usb settings its set to connect as a camera, but when I switch to mtp it switches back on its own (propably because of my driver issue?)
From my Note2
fixed itself??
i just had an update with the rom i was running (scott's cleanROM ACE 4.6.1-now updated to 4.7) im not sure if it was the factory reset that did it or if it was the rom itself, but it's working just fine now...
Do you have any experience in cmd line(windows) or terminal(mac). I know I have had issues getting my phone to mount as a disk drive for easy drag and drop file transfer. I decided to bypass that and get adb tools set up correctly. With that you can transfer files from cmd prompt or terminal using the adb push command.
