Hello,
I have an HTC Aria originally on ATT in the US. I currently have no sim and haven't had one for like 1 1/2 years. I recently turned it on using wifi and it intermittently will just shut down and reboot. Any idea whats going on? This happens all the time. I can't get over the air updates since it is still locked to att. I don't have a sim card in there so can't get att updates. Please help?

It's a known problem with the phone, and no one really knows for sure why it's happening. The only proven solution is to put a SIM card in the device -- and even then, it actually needs to be a recent SIM card, too, not an older one, for reasons that aren't clear.
My suggestion is to walk into an AT&T store and ask if they can give you a non-activated SIM card to put in your phone.
You can read more about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650934

I bought my Vibrant off-plan, then swapped in my SIM from my G1.
This means Android doesn't know my phone number. Does anyone know how to set this? Apps like Nimbuzz complain about the missing number.
What? Are you not able to make calls? I took my SIM card from my G1 to a Vibrant and worked fine. What happens when you try and put your SIM card in your G1? Does the # appear again?

Yup, that's it. I'll try the OTA activation message thing. Thanks!
I had this problem on my MYT3G. TMO support was not able to assist.
I finally found a solution here on XDA. (cant find the link right off hand)
I removed my SIM,
powered up the phone
shutdown the phone
installed SIM and voila.... My number now shows up on the phone.
I had this a couple of years ago with my G1. I called T-mo, let them know... 5 minutes and a reboot and it was showing up, no problem. Just call T-Mo...
Thanks again smerff, that worked and the T2 support lady fixed my friend's missing number on the same support call. Can't argue with that!
Mine had always been like this, in my old G1 and now. Figured it was my sim card, I never looked into it though. Maybe I'll call Tmo and see what they day.

This was like this for me with my old SIM card (had it since the days of the first PocketPC Phone Edition from like 2002). Replaced the SIM for other reasons with a brand new one and now my phone number shows up. Don't know if that was the reason or not.
The tmobile rep told me that they were duplicating old sim data to new sim cards for issues just like that. Don't know how that would affect anything or why. Just an idea.

Ok, so I'm totally used to CDMA, obviously, but I've lived abroad and appreciated the beauty of just swapping SIM cards in when you're in a new country.
Is it possible to just swap SIM cards like GSM cards, or do you still have to call Verizon to activate? The reason I ask is, my father and I were going to swap Thunderbolts, but I didn't have time to call Verizon and do the ESN swap thing. Could we just have swapped SIM cards?
SIm card
SIM cards are for GSM technologies.... Verizon LTE is a GSM tech... And yes thats the theory, with Verizon announcing some day you will be able to use other networks LTE SIM cards in VZW phones. Sim card in your fathers phone gives you access to his google account and contacts.. unless you have transferred all google contacts to your SIM card.
It will only work with the sim you are given for the TB.

Got it. So the SIM is tied to the ESN somehow? Either way, they don't work like GSM sims.
they would most likely if the phone were entirely gsm, but since it's not. Like if you ruin the one you have, the only way to get a new one is directly from verizon and they can only be activated for the phone they are first put into.
dude no one here knows what they are talking about. if you swap sims with your dads phone then it should work fine. the phones will activiate with the respective phone number tied to your sim card. that is how you activate a replacement device as well. i just took my sim from my old phone and put it in the new phone and that is it. works JUST like GSM

If that was true, I wouldnt have to replace my SIM card both of the times Ive sent my phone in for repairs. My service is still on, just switched to a different phone. The verizon rep I spoke with yesterday(One of the few that actually know what she was talking about) confirmed that the moment that a phone gets disconnected the sim card gets retired. I dont know why, and I dont understand it, but thats the way VZW is rolling with it for now. As long as I dont have to pay for it, IDC. lol.

that must be because whoever is disconnecting the phone is killing the sim also for some reason. i have used the same SIM card in 2 thunderbolts and a samsung charge.

That's just it. That rep doesn't know what they're talking about. If you get a replacement TB, nothing should be changed on the account - no phone gets "disconnected." You simply move the SIM to the new phone. Sounds like that rep thinks it should be like a CDMA phone, where the account is changed to reflect that the phone's ESN has been changed when swapping phones.

Did you activate an old phone while waiting for repairs? That's really the only way your SIM would be deactivated.

I did. Im still unsure of why they retire my sim though. All in order to send me another one that will sit here till my phone gets back. Why not just put it on hold or put it on temporary hold?
Sim cards work in any phone that will take them.
Just to put this one to bed--they work just like GSM SIM cards. I swapped my SIM between another Thunderbolt and a Charge, and it worked perfectly every single time.
I have been on an escapade with Google and have received mixed results, so I will turn to my last resort!
My question is, what does it take to use the HTC Aria with a GoPhone SIM card? I have read it will not work, it will work with no issues, and it will work after a SIM unlock. My cousin currently has an HTC Surround and it works fine with his prepay account. He desperately wanted to move back to Android and seems to adore the Aria so I picked up a broken one for cheap with intentions to replace the digitizer next week. Long story short he popped his SIM card in the phone and it does not work.
Both the Surround and the Aria are smartphones from AT&T, different OS or not they should both work if one does. I know he wanted my old Inspire before the rain took it and we encountered the same problem, his SIM wouldnt work. Could it be as simple as carrier unlocking the device or are all the people just getting lucky and their device works with the GoPhone card?
The Aria is currently running CM7, it is of course rooted but is carrier locked if that could be the culprit.
Any help is appreciated, thanks guys and gals! :good:
Just got an HTC One M8 from Swappa and started setting it up earlier today. I stuck my nano sim in from my Moto X and went about letting it install apps and fiddling with some settings. I noticed that I never got cell service that entire time and didn't know why. The sim is not recognized at all in the phone, but works just fine in my Moto X. Another sim card also did not work in the M8. Already contacted the seller on Swappa and he hasn't responded yet. Is there something stupid simple I can do to fix this, or am I stuck having to return the phone? (if the seller ever responds...)
I am also not getting the 4.4.4 update in the settings either. I thought that the update might fix something, but likely not.
AT&T nanoSIM?

AT&T updates won't come through unless you are connected to the AT&T network. Most other carrier versions don't have this requirement, so its a little counter-intuitive. But if you have no service, you won't get an AT&T update either.

Yeah, it's an AT&T nanoSIM from an iPhone 5s.
That whole not getting updates unless connected to AT&T network really sucks.
I should be getting a partial refund of $30 to get a replacement from HTC and everything will be good.
Need help with this one... I just bought the phone from someone on Facebook. Well phone is unlocked and when I put my att sim card in it says inserted sim and restarts but still says no sim when it restarts. I called Sony and they told me to hook it to computer and download the software again so I did and it still has the same problem. I put my wife sim card it it it will read that there's a sim card inserted but will never give me cell service. I don't know what else to do. Please if anyone knows what I could try please let me know.. Thanks

Check your mobile network - access point name....does it have any APN service option....
Yeah, do what Martin wrote, and also try yet another SIM card. If it detected your wife's SIM, then it's probably not a hardware issue. May I ask how old your SIM is?
The SIM tray on the Ultra is also one of the worst designed trays in the history of time, so be 100% sure that you've put it in correctly.
The sim is only maybe 6 months old.. I am going to go in the morning and see about another sim. Maybe it will work.

Okay, so it's definitely not the SIM card, but the phone did detect your wife's SIM, so I'm not sure what the issue could be
I will post what I find out tomorrow when I take it to att tomorrow
OK so I took the phone to my phone provider and got a new sim and it works great now. But when I make a call on it the screen goes black and can't turn it back on until the phone hangs up even if the phone is nowhere near my face. I have looked to maybe keeping the phone on during call but there is no setting for that. I have read a few forms about this and there's only stuff about screen protector or cases which I am not using either of them. Please if anyone know something about this please help.. Thanks

1. What Android version do you have installed?
2. Are you using a screen protector?
