So I can't connect my Droid RAZR to my windows 7 machine...
I have tried a lot of things!
I've tried:
*Different computers including Vista and Linux
*Different cables
*Different fastboot files
*Re-installing drivers
*Factory reset
*PIM sync from the market etc.
What happens when I plug my phone into my PC is the computer recognizes it, it makes a sound, then it says Unknown Device connected or some times it says USB malfunctioned and then on my lockscreen it says the phone is charging but it doesn't show on my battery icon.
Whats also interesting is if I got into Fastboot mode and connect to my computer it says USB connected and then I can use it in RSD with no problems.
I'm on ICS with no root.
Please help!

You could try Software Data Cable @ the Play store. It is what I use, I've never connected to my PC via USB.

I'm going through the same thing except mine won't connect to fastboot and has charging problems. I also get the weird white light on the front when trying to charge with the screen off. I contacted Motorola but haven't heard back from them yet. Anybody else have these problems?

Haha I am going to get to the bottom of this! I plan on calling Motorola early tomorrow. I've read a lot of stuff about the same problems and no resolution except for a warranty exchange or repair. I've already had to open the back to force charge the battery once because it was beyond dead. I'll let you know what they say after I talk to them.

I really hope some one can find a solution, if no one can I'm definitely going to get rid of my Razr and never look back

That's understandable, I got this one for free because it wouldn't power on and got the white light of death. I knew it was still good because at least a light came on. Popped the back off, directly charged the battery for 2 hours and it's been running perfect except for the issues above. I didn't think I would say this, but the Razr is really impressive for the price...and I have 2 Galaxy S III's!

That was my main concern too! Just got off the phone with them. They let you send it in for repairs with no questions asked. There are a couple stipulations though, obviously no water damage and cracked screens:
HOW TO SEND
- Use secure packaging; We recommend using the free FedEx packaging that is available at a FedEx location. - Print the email (packing list) and include with the package when returning
- Include Proof-Of-Purchase (If Required For Warranty)
- Ensure box is well sealed and the product is well protected
Does anybody know how I can get a proof of purchase if I was not the original buyer of the phone?

I'm sure they will. As long as when you boot into AP fastboot it says 0 for root status and you are on the official release you should be all set.

Fastboot doesn't give "root status", that's recovery.
Next, Jeanjacq, are you able to fastboot the phone? Make sure you enable USB Debugging on the phone and try to put the phone into MTP mode, not mass storage mode (when you connect the phone to USB, a USB connection manager comes up on the top bar of the phone, click on it). What are the USB device IDs on the phone?
I don't think your USB port is damaged because you are able to fastboot the device. It sounds like some kind of configuration thing.
From Linux please do an lsusb and output the information, and from windows take a screenshot of your unknown device's hardware properties (i'm looking for the USB VID and PID in the screenshot)

For some reason, when I go to flash a file in RSDLite 5.6, everything works until the program puts it into AP Fastboot. The program isn't able to recognize my phone and ends up displaying "The phone failed to switch to fastboot mode."
Any ideas?
Thanks!

I am having the same exact problem!! i was about to post a new thread when i found this.... hope someone can chime in and give us a heads up.
my problem is that i can only get windows to recognize my razr in bp flash SBF mode. it will not recognize my razr while in AP fastboot mode. no matter how many times i've tried. i have successfully flashed an sbf before.
since then i have removed and re downloaded the drivers just to be sure that i have the correct ones. thought it might be a usb cable so i switched it out along with multiple ports on the comp. i have no idea.
don't know if this helps but the only bootstrap i could use prior to bootlooping was razrbootstrap. cwmonboot would not work no matter what (which i had working once also) and i came from arctic rom where i also lost usb mode while booted. no options at all to connect to pc. thought that might have something to do with it.
i really hope this helps someone to point us in the right direction. if i don't find anything out tonight i am going to take it to verizon. thank you guys for all that you do!!

What a lengthy post haha. I think the problem may be that I was using my 64x laptop. Switched to my moms 32 and its made it much farther so far. *fingers crossed

It was just about done, and I guess the battery got too low.....I'm screwed. It says it cant transfer because the battery is too low. Now im stuck in ap fastboot...
figured out my problem..... it wouldnt recognize my razr while in AP fastboot mode all because of me using a different cable. make sure you use the cable that came with the phone!! I thought i had the new cable but i was using an old one.
what a relief!! so that was my problem. if anyone experiences the same thing you know what to look for.
thanks XDA for somewhere to go to when i have a problem like this tho lol.
also have you tried to boot into AP fastboot then just hit the power button once. should just turn off the phone so that you can charge it on the wall charger for a while.

I went through a situation of FCs with my first Razr that VZW nor Moto could diagnose, and local Verizon replaced it with no questions asked. But I'd only had it for 9 days. Was told VZW replacement period was 14 days; but I never confirmed it.
I was able to unroot/factory reset though before taking it in. Your's might be questionable unless you have a good relationship with the VZW dealer.
IMO, if your way past any warranty period, I'd hold out for a factory cable or get someone experienced to build you one via the post above.
Good luck!

not if you've rooted, that voids the warranty & gives them an excuse to hide their corporate heajs in the sand, & force people to do without a full system backup b/c they don't have root…
also, it saves them fm having to support all the difftroms, patches, etc.
So ive had my galaxy s 2 for a few months now, downloaded hundreds of songs, taken near a thousand photos, and yesterday the digitizer/lcd was shattered after being sat on. I can't replace this phone, and my parents who own the contract didn't purchase insurance for it. I am nearly broke, and the repair costs for this part is over 200$, and my parents refuse to pay for this. All I need to do is copy all of the files from my phone to my computer, but i cannot enable mass storage to access the pictures/music on the internal storage because the screen is out. Does anyone have an idea as to how I could fix this, or move the files off of the phone? A thousand thanks to whoever could help me in this/:

Is Android Debugging on? Then you probably could get ADB to work.
If not, then...
Thats the thing. the screens black on my phone cause its broken, so i cant check if its on or not. idk how to use mass storage w/o this):
Droid VNC server may be an option, if you can somehow get it to work.
You have to download the app on the market to vnc with the computer, it would work if I wouldve already downloaded it.. I cant do anything on my phone at all. Thanks for the attempt though

sure you can, plug it in to your computer and just run adb devices, if it shows up, then debugging is on, if it is off it will tell you no device found
so to pull all the files off your sdcard assuming debugging is on..
1. in adb mount the sdcard (I forget the command off the top of my head, but google is your friend)
2. adb pull /sdcard some_folder_name_in_your_sdk_directory

Assuming I understand this correctly, you can still download apps to your phone by logging in to the market from your computer. This may still be an option.

You could always look around eBay craigslist or anywhere else you can think of and you might get lucky in finding a cheap gs2 that doesn't work but the screen is still intact or maybe if you know anyone that maybe willing to let you borrow their screen from their phone for yours if you know how to. I just haven't pulled apart any phones since I came
To the US in 2002 so I'm not sure if its still that simple to do.
I haven't tried it yet so some of the others may be able to chime in but what about the possibility of using the HDMI adapter. I have looked at purchasing one and they are not very expencive depending on the source. I just do not know if it will automatically output the video when connected or it needs to be enabled.

it automatically works. nothing needs to be enabled
1) If you had USB debugging enabled, you can use ADB. If you're not sure - try it.
2) If you had a custom kernel with CWM installed, you can use ADB from within recovery. Recovery does not normally mount the sdcard but you can do it manually via ADB. I can provide info on this IF you can get ADB connecting first
3) HDMI is another possibility - although controlling the device will be problematic if the touchscreen is also failed. (It's possible that touchscreen is semiworking and main AMOLED is busted.)
For getting ADB installed and running, try Droid Explorer.
Been there done that.
Unfortunately, it'll cost some money to do a diy fix with this phone.
Last summer I dropped my htc aria onto gravel and the glass shattered. I googled around and found an oem digitizer for 30 bucks on ebay, and some great how-to-tear-apart your phone videos on youtube. 5 hours and multiple clumps of hair ripped out later, I got the thing fixed. Granted the light from the soft keys now bleeds onto the screen (thankfully CM7 let me disable them) and the trackpad became recessed in too far to use. But it still got me through until I got my SGS2.
Only thing is, my lcd still worked, it was just the glass digitizer that broke.

Im trying to upgrade my samsung galaxy s2 (SGH-I777). I connect my phone using the Samsung Kies program. The installation goes all the way to the part where my phones screen has the android and it says "firmware upgrade i process..do not disconnect from target." it stays at 0% then i get the error saying "pc failed to recognise the mobile phone". Ive re installed drivers, used different cable used different port and still get the same error. please help.
Sounds like the part of the driver that recognizes download mode isn't installed at all or correctly. What I would do is close KIES, restart both phone and computer. now put the phone in download mode by holding vol up & vol down while plugging in usb cable. when you get warning screen press vol up to get to download mode. let the computer install the driver (don't open KIES yet)
after all of it is done, restart again and start from beginning - open KIES, connect phone, update to LE5
It's not all it's cracked up to be. I did it just out of curiousity but soon left it for custom roms again.

two questions:
1. are you holding the buttons down until you see something on the screen? hold both buttons down, insert usb cable (other end plugged into computer), hold buttons until you see text on the screen, then release.
2. no offense, but you do have the i777, right? so many people come here to the i777 forum but actually have the i727 Skyrocket, or something else.

I would try a custom ROM for sure. I just came from an iPhone 4 and loading AOKP on my i777 was a breeze. I never messed with whatever was on it before so I wouldnt know. Im not sure if there is a one click stock ROM you could flash with odin. Does odin even recognize your phone? If not full uninstall of kies and reinstall and be sure that you have the samsung drivers installed, which you said you have done time and again.
But really though, check out the Task and Ktoonsez AOKP rom, if you dont like there are several to choose from. and then there is this galaxys2root.com website. @ pichienyfl - What OS do you have on your computer? Windows XP/Vista/7? Mac OS? Linux?
I agreed with Phalanx7621 that it is not your phone (at this point). Especially if you have Windows 7, you will have to install the right driver for it. Or it will not work correctly.
Ok so last night I transferred some files with otg cable. Unmounted and then went to put it on charger and it does not recognize the charger. It did charge after I powered it down. But when the phone is on it doesn't recognize anything plugged into the usb port. Anyone have any suggestions? And if not how do I run a ruu or something to get back to stock for warranty without a connection to pc?

So seems like a firmware/software issue. Is there any way to flash firmware without using usb to pc? Because it won't recognize the usb at all.

Also see if you can access it through bootloader. You might be able to RUU. Alternatively, factory reset and install ROM in recovery. Or try side adb in recovery..

I'm currently using the same firmware ROM base combination as you with no issues. Are you using the charger that came with your phone, have you replaced the usb cable to make sure it isn't faulty?

I am going to look into flashify. That sounds interesting. I have tried getting the thing to pick up the usb in hboot. But no luck so far.

I have tried three different HTC branded charger/cable combinations. With no luck while booted up. I charged to 100% while shut off.
I have been running this combo for a week or something. Ever since the firmware hit the forums. And had no issues until two nights ago when this first started giving me grief... so I don't know what has caused it.
I also posted this over in the international forums and there's a guy over there with the same issue.

well i am downloading a stock backup and i have a stock recovery not sure how to get them both to work... because i have to flash the stock rom with twrp and then how do i get the stock recovery flashed with a stock rom.... i will figure it out. anyway my plan is to try to take an ota and have that change the firmware and then i will know if i have a hardware issue or a software issue.
Lol. Now I'm not sure what to do. I reverted back to stock rom and recovery and then realized the touch drivers I have aren't compatible.... But I am booted up and plugged into the pc and it is charging but not coming up on the pc as a device. I don't know if debug mode is on because I am stuck at the first setup screen... Ahh I can't seem to catch a break here...

How do I get into safe mode?

Press the power button until the power options open. Tap and hold POWER OFF on the screen and the phone should ask if you'd like to boot into safe mode but if your touch panel is not working for you this is not going to work.

Correct. I have totally screwed myself I think. I think I basically at this current time have a fairly lightweight brick that lights up. I have no touch capabilities at all and nothing recognized when plugged into PC. I have tried plugging into a windows 8 and also a Ubuntu machine with no dice in fast boot or adb....

I dont think it is prob with some ROM. I used HTC One with stock rom (official stock by HTC) and after three months my phone stopped charging and also stop USB connection. I googled it and it was universal prob and also HTC knows about that.
See this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2417377
Phone acted very strange. Details are in above link. And also there are 2 or 3 threads more like this.

I don't think AT&T will look kindly on me for having it unlocked and s-off and for having a rom/firmware mismatch...

Unless the OTA adapter screwed up the USB connector pins for data but not power, then you should be able to recover. However like stated there has been a few reports of failed USB connectors.
Does there seem like there is any damage to the usb pins in the connector on the phone?
Did you make sure to have the HTC device drivers installed on your PC before trying ADB. Do you have a Windows 7 PC to try?

So far I have tried on win8 winxp and Ubuntu.on the windows pcs the drivers were definitely installed. No dice on any of them. I am thinking the connector must be messed up. I can't see anything obvious looking at it but the fact that on three pcs one of them running Linux didn't find the phone but will charge it is pretty definitive. I don't have the money to pay for repairs due to having "tampered" with the phone(even though it doesn't say that) it is an AT&T phone with s-off and unlocked and a 1.55 hboot and has a inverted splash screen. Pretty obvious...

If you boot the phone into the bootloader without the cable attached it should come up and say fastboot. When you attach the USB cable does the display on the phone change to fastboot USB or stay only fastboot?

Yep, then it seems the pinouts on the USB connector have been damaged. Bummer.
On the plus side consider this: AT&T will probably still give you device exchange without charging you a fee. First, they mostly don't care about users modding their phones. Secondly there are so many exchange requests coming into them for the One, that all the defective units will just be sent back to HTC directly by AT&T and at that point HTC is not going to bother to go back to AT&T and say listen this list of devices were modified. If they did, that would create a backlog on work for AT&T to match the records to owners and then contacting them and trying to prove that the user did this so far removed from the exchange that it doesn't make business sense to them.
I have seen AT&T users report that they have sent in devices that were extremely modified and obvious, but AT&T proceeded with the exchange anyway because they would rather keep you as a happy customer than spending time trying to prove what you did was the only cause of the failure. Users have even sent back total bricks that they created by doing something stupid and AT&T still replaced the device without question.
When you modded the phone, that basically ended AT&T's obligation to help you with any service/software related issues, but the modding did not void the hardware warranty and it seems your device has a hardware issue that was unlikely caused by the software modifications.
The key in your case would be to do the defective device exchange via phone/mail and not via the walk in device service center.
If you don't want to do this because of the possible risk of flagging by them, then I may be willing to buy your bricked device if you are not going to do anything with it. PM if interested.
Was on Bonsai rom and was running fine. Noticed the phone acting kind of weird the last couple days and thought it may be related to Xposed or some of it's modules so I deleted all of them. That didn't fix the problem. The problem being that the battery icon in the the notification bar would randomly flicker and with it so would the touch keys. I'm pretty sure this only happened when I was attempting to charge my phone (in my car.)
Instead of getting the usual phone charging indication in the status bar I either got nothing or it would say that the phone was connected to the dock (WTF?) I ended up restoring a nandroid of an older Bonsai rom and for a few hours there were no problems but then it started happening again. At times I would get a reboot from just plugging in the USB cable to charge the phone (car or wall) Other times the phone would just freeze up.
I then did a full wipe and tried MAXIMUS rom. I plugged in the USB cable and attempted to sync the phone to my PC as I have done countless times just days ago but I was now getting a message that my USB device is not recognized. I did another clean flash and tried Steve's Odexed rom. Same story more or less. If I attempt to sync the phone to the PC I get the same not recognized message.
Here are the steps I have taken:
- tried numerous USB cables
- tried numerous charging ports (wall/car/PC)
- tried numerous roms (none will let my PC see the phone)
- reinstalled the Samsung USB drivers
I'm at the point where I'm thinking this is a hardware issue and I probably have to return this phone. However, before I jump the gun I wanted to see if anyone has input on this. I appreciate any advice u guys may have.
My initial thought s maybe a cheap car charger, then a bad USB cable, but you've already eliminated those options. When you backup /restore your backups, are you including the efs.? I also remember the option in Wanam to keep old efs, was that option checked while it was installed?

I'm pretty sure that when I backup and restore I have all the boxes check off. However, I not only used backups. I did clean flashes on two separate roms but both had the same issue. I'm still on the fence as to whether this is software or hardware

Have you tried flashing the MJ4 firmware to see if that straightens things out?
I would suggest to odin the stock rom found here if you can get your computer to recognize your device in download mode..

Hopefully somebody can come up with a solution for you.
If it fails to recognize your device in Odin mode, you should be able to remove the battery, reinsert it and reboot to your system. No harm, no fowl.

Sounds like a Windows driver issue. Could be unrelated to your phone.
What Version of Windows are you running? What do you see when you plug in your device when you go into Windows device manager?
Have you installed any new Android devices of the Nexus variety on your computer?
Alright, I'll assume that you're asleep. I agree, you may not want to do PC Odin if your computer isn't recognizing your device.
Go into device manager (right click on My Computer, select Manage, go to device manager from there). Do you see your device? Do you see any Android device? If so, do either have a yellow question mark adjacent the device name? Either way, delete the device if present, then reboot your PC.
Now plug your phone into your computer using a different USB port on the machine (cable we'll assume is fine). Your computer should automatically recognize the phone. If yes, profit.
Also check that USB debugging is set to on. If recognized and the phone is plugged in, deselect MTP device and choose the photo option. Then select MTP again.
If the above doesn't work, you can try rolling back drivers and reinstalling.
Let me know if this helps.

Mic, thanks for taking the time for taking a look at this Q&A. I'm on Windows 7. Under DEVICE MANAGER it says UNKNOWN DEVICE with a yellow triangle with a exclamation point inside. When I click on that icon this is what I get for device status: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
I went through all your steps but it hasn't worked. I get the same message in DEVICE MANAGER before and after doing your steps.
As far as the phone is concerned (running Steve's Odexed) it indicates that the phone is charging but it doesn't have the usual MTP message in the status bar. Simply indicates that it's charging.
Is it safe to assume this is a hardware problem with the phone? The only thing I can think of that could have caused this is the other day my car charger (part that goes in the phone) fell in some water that accumulated on the rubber car mat. I dried it off with a napkin and plugged it back into my phone. These problems happened a day or two after this incident. Not sure if it's the reason. I was leaning towards blaming it on Xposed modules that got updated.
Nope, Not Safe to Assume...

Hi, SantinoInc, let us hope that the car charger issue and your Code 43 is a cum hoc ergo propter hoc (with this, therefore because of this) fallacy, or a non-correlated set of phenomena that, though happening contemporaneously, does not mean (though one is enticed to infer) causality.
The Code 43 error is a Windows issue, and if you are using a laptop (I hope), turn off the computer, take out the battery, let it discharge for 10 minutes, slap your laptop battery back in, boot up, plug in the phone, it's alive (I'm hoping). The USB controller on your computer actually holds a small amount of charge for rapid use when the computer is started, which can corrupt the port and driver. Draining the charge and pulling the battery is required to get rid of the problem.
Report back and let us know if this works for you.

Google the error code you flipped me. You'll find that it most certainly looks like a USB controller issue. Tom's Hardware and Microsoft look to have the info you need, bro.

I had this issue as well, not with the same phone symptoms, but in windows.
Remove the driver, go to samsung's site, download and re-install the latest driver. Also make sure you are connecting directly to the ports on your motherboard and not on the front of the PC or a USB hub on something like your monitor. Also make sure you are using the cable provided by samsung if possible. 3rd party cables for some reason can cause issues. (Thank god for standards to specifications

I have tried all of your suggestions (including Windows error code 43 in Google and trying those recommendations) nothing has worked. Of course I can't find either of the two laptops I own to test this POS phone out. If I get the same error another PC I'm going to take the phone to Sprint to get it replaced. I'm really feeling that this is hardware related considering I have not installed any new phone drivers to my PC at all and have made no significant changes to the PC.
Agreed...

Agreed; any PC would be suffice to determine if it is phone related. I'd almost be inclined to hop in the car and hit a Best Buy store and be done with it, like now....
Best of luck.
