[REQ] 4G Statistics - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Evening all,
Bit of a odd request here, but I figured I'd ask and see what I could come up with. I'm required to write a paper on 4G versus 3G speeds, prices, etc, etc...however I have a problem. I don't actually have a 4G phone, and thus can not run the tests myself. If people would be interested in helping a guy out, I would appreciate the following statistics.
1. Speedtest Screenshots 3G/4G
2. Timed downloads for a identical APK from the PlayStore on both 3G and 4G. (I don't care which just so long as it is download both times and uninstall between the to obviously.
3. A timed download for a external file outside of the play store on both 4G and 3G.
Thanks will be handed out for results, and it would be much appreciated!

Atrix Data Very Inconsistent - Frustrating!

Data speeds have been horribly inconsistent since I got it. I have had several AT&T 3G phones in the same locations I'm using the Atrix and I can say with confidence it's not just the network. In the same spot at the same time a speed test will tell me ~3Mbps down ~1Mbps up and yet it will be horribly slow surfing the web. I'll bench it again a few minutes later and the speed test page won't even load. Apps will complain of no data connectivity and then boom, all of a sudden it's back. The whole time I'll have a 4-5 bars of service and my wife's iPhone sitting right next to it has no problems. Many times I have to reboot the phone to get data service back. Sometimes the data speed is so good I think I left the wifi on. That rarely lasts however.
I have tried nearly every "ROM" and radio in the dev section. I'm currently running the latest AT&T radio and CherryBlur. Is the radio in this thing just a PoS? I was thinking of having it swapped anyway since the front facing camera is completely blocked with pocket lint.
I just got the Atrix as a company phone. I traded in my company iPhone 4 for it for a couple of reasons.
1.) I prefer android phones
2.) I have an upcoming trip to Europe and thought I would have an easier time using the Atrix over there than the iPhone.
3.) I have an android tablet that also has a Tegra 2 chip in it so I thought I could run of the of the games I got for my tablet on this phone.
4.) Both my personal and work cell phones were 3G phones.
After having it for only 2 days, I am not a fan. I noticed the crappy data speed and also have suffered the network not available errors.
I have a rooted Droid X as a personal phone and I absolutely LOVE it. I travel for business and pleasure and when I do I usually take both my work phone and personal phone and I consistently see I get a stronger and better signal from my Verizon Droid X phone. Even when I had the (AT&T) iPhone 4 (3G) I saw the weak signal and slow speeds.
Anyway, back to the topic of this thread. Yes, you're not alone. This Atrix is pretty disappointing being a "4G" phone and all. Last night while at home I tried watching videos from several sources on this Atrix. Fox Television, Hulu Plus, and Crackle all complained about "a network error" and would take forever to load a video if it didn't error out first and then it was really poor quality complared to what I experience on my old 3G Verizon Droid X. If that wasn't bad enough I even got the network errors popup when I would move around in the Market looking at apps and such.
I am planning on upgrading my personal phone to the Droid Bionic when it is released next month but alas that phone is not "global ready" so I will see what I can do with this Atrix once I get root on it just so I can have a "world phone" as a backup.
Atrix 4G HSDPA+ speeds
I'm glad I'm not the only one!
I'm currently just outside of Princeton, NJ... running the speedtest.net application:
H+ data, 4-5 bars connectivity
Ping: 99ms
Download: 53kbps (yes, k)
Upload: 90kpbs
I regularly measure in the 50-80kbps speeds.
When I got my Atrix, I figured HSDPA+ would be faster.....
(yes, I made sure nothing else was using CPU or the data connection - I run this test regularly).
Admittedly, in other areas I've seen as high as 1 Mbps, but it's consistently bad in this area, even given an apparently strong signal.
I do not share your frustrations. I am on Bell in Canada and average 2 mbps down / 1 mbps up. That's blazing fast for Canada in my books!
Maybe flashing up the latest radio by kenneth (in dev section) may be of some help.

Huh???
Look in your settings/about phone and post what network type and radio version you have on there. You should certainly be on HSPA+ now with the rest of the US and probably world.
Is it the phone or the network? Just asking since I have both an AT&T phone and a Verizon phone and have noticed network and download speed issues and am really disappointed with my Atrix.

The network severely limits non-iphones. Same deal with HTC Inspire, Samsung Infuse, etc. I can usually hit 3-4 MB/s down, 1.5 MB/s up. That's not 4G. It's not the Atrix causing this.

[Q] Streaming Video - Lagging

Hello Forum,
Not sure if this is a Amaze issue or just a Tmobile 4G issue.
It seems that whenever I want to stream a video one it lags to open up and when it does open up it always gets interupted and seems to have to load again and I get that clock symbol that it is clocking.
I check and even when I have full bars and 4G running full it still seems to happen. I live in the Miami area and supposedly it has good 4G coverage.
I even tested it next to my friend's phone who has Iphone (not even the 4s) on AT&T and we both streamed a video and his started automatically while mine took like 7-8 seconds to open and play.
If anyone has any input or advice, please let me know.
Cuz according to Tmobile commercials especially the ones run during Xmas with elves it should be lightning fast....
Thanks
Sounds like you're throttled..lol

No, not at all. I have the 5GB Plan and I never go over... Not even close...
I cant believe the little response..
Is anyone else having this problem??
Could people please comment either if your is super fast or having same problem I am having....
Thanks
I have the 5G plan also..I go over it once in awhile. And I have experienced throttle...from what you're describing sounds like a throttle (to me). Which APN are you using? Have you upgraded your SIM card?
You can also check how much data was used with that T-Mo app. MyAccount. I need to use that because I stream and download tons of crap a month..
Sent from my HTC Amaze 4G using Tapatalk
try getting speedtest app from the market and run a few tests check your ping and speed, wireless net speeds vary greatly.
whats site are you streaming from and what is the quality

I love the EVO LTE but the 3G speeds I'm experiencing are abysmal. I can get a carrier pigeon to move this fast. Pathetic Sprint, just pathetic...

Everyone knew or should of known before getting the phone that lte was not up yet and you would be on the 3G network.
If your sales person didn't tell you this then I would take it up with your salesperson. If you bought the phone online then sorry about your luck, lesson learned. ( Hopefully )
Either way don't knock Sprint for something they have made clear. It was never stated to have 4G WiMax. Only 3G and lte when available.
Better speed.....wait for lte.

that is abysmal for 3G speeds I think was his point. Everyone is anxiously awaiting for network vision/LTE so we no longer have to deal with Sprints horrific 3G network

You brought the EVO LTE thinking you might get decent 3g speeds? I'm sure you're smarter then that or am I giving you to much credit? This is an old subject we should be discussed somewhere else.
I completely knew what I was getting. However, I did not expect slower 3G than I had with the OF EVO. Nor .MMS that don't download. LTE will be here soon but I'd like just a but of utility out of 3G...

All you guys complaining about 3g speed ever heard of the Network Vision?
BE PATIENT. Sprint is in the process of improving their entire network. You may not see the improvements yet, but trust me they are working on it.
I live in Aurora, CO and there are two towers here that are as opposite as night and day. One is totally bogged down and speeds are 200 kbps Down and 200 kbps Up with 400 ping. About 3 miles away, another tower gives me 1200 kbps down and 800 kbps up with 100 ping.
They are working on it, just have patience.

I've been patient with Sprint for over 12 years. I get that it is coming. The point is 3G is worse now than it was with the OG. And this is with new towers on 3G in the area. Simply pathetic especially considering I work and live next to a major international airport and large technology corridor.

I like Sprint. The whole point is speeds seem worse with the EVOLTE than on the old device. It is either an issue with the EVOLTE or the network is getting worse rather than better.

The problem is that most people, including myself actually have better 3G speeds with the newer radio technology on the LTE compared to older generation smartphones.

You could always call the Sprint direct customer service line, 877-775-4886, and make a formal complaint about said speeds. See if they can give you some freebies if not some information regarding the Network Vision roll-out in your local area. Who knows, they might throw in some credit or something.

That might be my best bet. I was cool with 3G on the OG - hardly ever used WiMax since it was so spotty. I am simply at a loss for how this is playing out when everyone else seems to be having much better luck.
My 3g speeds are about the same as they were on my og evo, and most of the time they suck. The part that really sucks for me is that I might notice that my speeds are really slow and run a speed test, and confirm it, then an hour, or day later, the speed might be flying.
As an example, I just ran a speed test because it seemed slow, I got 203 kbps down and 506 kbps up. Yesterday I noticed it seemed faster than normal, so I did a speed test from my desk at work, the same location as the test I just did today. I got 2389 kbps down and 925 kbps up, by far the fastest I have ever seen it here.
At home I rarely see speeds over 100 kbps, yet just the other day I got about 1000 kbps down there. The bottom line for me is, I wouldn't care if the speeds weren't great if they were just consistent. It sucks when I need to do something quick and the data connection is crawling, which is the case more often than not.
I had a problem right out of the box. My ping was over 800 and was getting under 100 down. Weird thing wad that up was at like 300. I had this problem with my 3# so I called sprint and asked for my msl. Enter ##72786#. Enter your msl and then go to menu reset. It will reactivate. My speeds went up to over 1000. Worth a shot for u guys. Interesting sidenote... When I called in the tech told me to power down the phone and remove the battery. I let him know that these phones don't have removable batteries. Amazing that some techs don't even know about their flagship devices...

I ran that and updated profile and PRL again and I see some improvement. Sprint acknowledged an outage but it sounds like it covers Baltimore, DC and VA which doesn't narrow much for me. It is also off peak hours so we'll see how it works tomorrow. Regardless, thanks for the code.

Does Verizon tell you if you're throttled?

Just curious... My speeds aren't what they should be. I can't even get through a HD video on YouTube without massive buffering.
I think total me and my wife used about 15-20GBs of data last month.
3G or LTE? As far as I know, they aren't legally allowed to throttle LTE.
Run a speed test. It should be about 3-5 mbits/sec if your throttled on lte.
A good lte speed is about 15-50

Sense 3.6 ROM...
I wonder. What might your signal strength be at the time you are trying to use data? I'm not talking about what it says in the signal strength indicator in the status bar but in the settings rather.
Got four bars..
First number is teetering in the mid to high 90s, second number stays a steady 8. I'm on a global ROM.
Your sppeds can depend on your area. I know where I live I can have 4 bars and be from 3 to 10 Mbps. Now if I go in to town I can get 15 to 20. Then if I go to my uncles place in the middle of no where I get 20 to 35. Just because you have 4g doesn't mean you are going to download at those speeds with play store. It depends on their servers and how congested their servers are. I have been on WiFi that had killer speeds and it still downloaded at the same speeds. Verizon doesn't throttle by your sim card but by tower location. If a tower get a lot of congestion they will cut the speeds of everyone so everyone can use the data. Once the congestion goes away they put the speeds back.
With that said I have heard people talk about when they check their account there is something on their account that means they are the top 5 percent and are throttled. I use from 50 to 75 gigs a month and never seen this throttling.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
Absolutely what Jedi said. According to the signal strength I asked you to provide, everything seems in order. What I would do now if you are still concerned is just contact VZW about the issue and see if something may be going on in your area.
This happened to me before when I lived 30 miles out into the country, I had to contact VZW because my phone was getting slow speeds even though the signal seemed ok. They ran some tests and such and finally contacted me back informing me indeed a recent storm had caused the box on the nearest tower to be struck by lightning. They sent out crews and within a few hours my area was restored to full strength again. This may not be your case, but it might be worth it because VSW told me if I had not contacted them, they would not have known for a long time. Just a thought.
I'll have to call then. Just ran speed test, got 22mbp/s. Updated some apps. Download speed crawled. Turned ny home Wi-Fi on, speeds starting flying. Something is definitely wrong...
I don't know about you guys but I wouldn't use YouTube as a reliable test. YouTube has begun throttling video streaming especially during peak hours. I can't hardly stream an SD video around 6:00 anymore.

First of all, let me preface this with the fact that this is my experience, so ymmv.
I tried it with tmobile 3G here in Orlando (the js won't do the tmo lte frequencies, iirc) and it was absolutely horrid. I've since moved it to at&t lte and it is obviously much faster, though, not quite as fast as my galaxy s3.
Hope that helps.

I'm up in Washington State, and service is great up here.
Most of the areas I frequent have the re-farmed 1900mhz PCS spectrum, so I've been able to use the Jetstream on cellular all the time.
I took a couple screenshots of what we're working with. I apologize in advance, the DPI isn't very forgiving using the SpeedTest app on the tablet.
The first is a screenshot of the cell info - showing that the JS is connected to T-Mobile's Network.
The second are the SpeedTest results on the Jetstream, on the 1900mhz network.
The third are the SpeedTest results on my GS3, on the 1700/2100mhz AWS network.

If you have a stylus then you can tap the pen icon -- the fourth icon on the status bar. My Jetstream has a list of two options here: one that takes you to a nearly barren Pen settings screen and one that lets you Take a screenshot. From this point on it is self explanatory.
If you don't have a stylus then I hope you have root. I believe that all screen capture apps in the market require root. I have had success (on my Jetstream) with an app called Screen Capture. The following is a QR code link.
[QRCODE]play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tools.screenshot[/QRCODE]
If you don't have a stylus or root then I think that you are out of luck. Someone please chime in if you have another solution.
