Quick Question - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've got my old thunderbolt rooted running thundershed 1.6 CM7, my friend needs a phone to use for a few days until the new battery for her droid incredible 2 comes in. Am i able to just swap out the sim cards and activate her number on the phone without unrooting? I'd rather not have to go through all that hassle if its only going to be for a few days. Any help quickly would be appreciated

I don't know if activating on cm7 is possible but you can activate the phone while it is rooted. Maybe make a nandroid backup and switch to a stock sense rom to activate the phone and restore back afterwards. You will need the new sim and you will need to have them call Verizon to activate the sim. Do not dial *228 it can screw a thunderbolt up big time.

Thanks for the quick response I figured i probably couldn't on CM7 but wasn't sure since i've never had to do this before lol. Does her getting a sim cost any money or is it simply just going to verizon and asking for one? I ask because her current phone is an Incredible 2 with a verizon vodafone sim card in it right now.

No that kind of sim is different. That is a GSM sim. The thunderbolt needs an lte sim. You can order them over the phone through customer service which is what I do. Usually takes two days if you get them during the week. If you order on a Friday you'll get it on Monday. If you get one from the store make sure it is a corporate Verizon store or they will try to charge you for it. I say it is better to do it over the phone yourself because at the store the rep is going to want to handle your phone and if you don't want them to know it is rooted then I wouldn't suggest that unless you just don't care.

But really they don't care, hell they're either afraid to root or root themselves (speaking from lots of experience), but they don't like make a note of it and damn your warranty.
They also have no idea that you can unroot and make it look as though you never rooted.... boy.

Although all this is true it is still not worth the risk. They can note your account though and when you try getting a warranty replacement charge you hundreds of dollars for a replacement when they see you don't have one. I have heard of people that were charged after sending a phone in for warranty replacement and they noticed it was rooted.

That's why you send back Thunderbolt dust when you send it in for a warranty replacement

The only real decision before sending in a rooted device for a replacement is:
Blendtec
or
Vitamix

Help with something

I want to know if there something i can do to my phone : to keep tmobile from tracking down my IMEI number and seeing if my SIM card has ever been in my phone. This has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with any kind of fraud or anything against the law (just letting you guys know before the thread gets locked).. Is there any kind of mod at all? To keep them from tracking my IMEI number?

theory1: ur trying to keep away tmobile from tracking your imei number so they can't suspend your phone.
YES they can suspened your phone making it useless ( whatever sim card u put in, its not gonna work) I confirmed it with tmobile and they usually use this method when new customer just stop paying their bill and just take the phone.

No i dont want them to track it down because about 4 months ago i did a warranty exchange on my phone.. But then i fixed it before i got it.. So i called tmobile back and asked them if i could cancel the shipping.. And they told me i could because the phones were on backorder... Well about a week later, i got the phone in the mail (even tho i wasnt suppose to)... And then eventually forgot about the phone. Well about 2 months after i recieved the new phone i realized i had it again and sent it back. ( but ended up sending back my older one instead)... Well tmobile is telling me that there was no history at all of me calling them and cancelling the shipment. Or no history in UPS that i even shipped it back. But i told them that i never recieved the phone tho... So i have been billed $475 on to my cellphone bill for a mistake they started by sending to me when i canceled it, and then not having a history of me calling. So now they are going to track down my IMEI number to see if my sim has been in it, On the phone i have now.... So im pretty much needing help to prevent them from doing that, because i have been charged with all this money, that was their mistake inthe first place... They said its un-creditable unless my sim was never in it... Is this anywhere near even possible at all to do?

Hmmm...thats odd...when my Vibrant went "DEAD" I called them and they sent out a replacement..I got mine working again the next morning and called them back to cancel the replacement and I was told that they "do not and can not cancel an order after one hour of the order being placed." And when you go through the replacement steps with CS, they tell you up front that if you dont sent back the old phone you will get billed a $475 "restocking" fee and you have 7 days to return the phone.
I sent back my replacement back and kept my old one..
They was only able to cancel it bc all the vibrant were on backorder and not in stock. It took them 9 days for it to become in stock again. So ya i was able to cancel it... And no it shouldnt of mattered if i forgot about sending it back or not bc they shouldnt of sent it in the first place. Bc i canceled it... ****ing pieces of ****

[Q] I'm selling my Thunderbolt, un-root or leave rooted?

I'm thinking I might be forced to sell my HTC Thunderbolt. Right now I am running the latest BAMF 2.1, and my question is, can I sell my phone and be able to meet someone at a Verizon Wireless and have the rooted Gingerbread Tbolt activated to whoever the buyer will be? Or do I need to flash back to bone stock unrooted 2.2? I'm hoping to leave it as is and just do a data wipe so that perhaps mine will have a little bit of an edge over the other phones I'm seeing posted now. I hate to sell it but times are tough. Thanks for any advice! -Phil

I'd leave it as is, custom rom & all. Whoever buys it will most likely appreciate it. If they've had a rooted HTC before, they can figure out how to swap roms/radios.

So close to giving up

This phone is awesome until i make or receive calls. I've tried numerous roms and modems that all result in the same result which is muffled voices that i often can't even understand. Seems that its when im talking to iphone users more than anything but its always there. My inspire was great with phone calls and really never had an issue understanding with any phone I've ever owned. Very frustrating and even happens on headset and Bluetooth devices. Any advice, anyone else experience this?

It very well may be a hardware issue. It happened to me on my last SGH. When I got a new phone, I haven't experienced the issue.
Try getting a replacement with whoever you bought the phone from. I had my phone replaced via hardware warranty and not insurance, so I got it for free.

That's probably what I'll try. I bought it over the phone with at&t so I'm sure they will want me to send it in since they aren't selling the sgsII over the counter here in austin (they are pushing the skyrocket). Sucks to be without a phone for a week or so!

You'll keep your current phone until they mail you the replacement. Then you'll pack your old phone into the box and ship it off. Make sure you've flashed back to stock and removed any trace of root because if you don't you'll lose warranty.

It should be pretty easy to make a claim on faulty hardware when you do it online and send it in, I haven't had any issues with call quality or anything so I'd guess it's a hardware issue
also I've done this before, except I did it with insurance claim, and I'm pretty sure they sent it with like FedEx overnight shipping too so you wouldn't really be waiting either

I would rather have a refund than a phone someone already used and broke. I buy new, I expect new.
refurbs are often times just a new phone that they cannot sell as new because it was opened. No scratches or damages but its still new.
Refurbished phones right now are basically still new phones. Most of the refurbished phones were phones bought brand new and returned within the 30 day free-exchange period. Some people didnt like it and a lot of people returned it for the Skyrocket... so AT&T has to resell the phones as refurbished even though there was nothing wrong with it at all. So now is the time to buy a refurbished phone.
I got my Dad one last week and he got it on Thursday. Its completely brand new. Not a scratch or anything on it. He got it for $9.99 and its perfect.
of all the refurbs I ever received from AT&T, all of them looked new.
I was up to 4 Captivate refurbs last year and they all looked brand new.
Interesting, not having any call issues with my phone.

Got screwed on a Craigslist deal

Yesterday, I traded my wife's razr for a purple razr. It was a straight up trade on Craigslist. Seemed legit at the time. As soon as I drove away, I noticed the 4g kept dropping. I had to toggle airplane mode to get it to come back,... and then I just dropped signal again. It does it constantly. If I change it to 3g only, it works fine, it just doesn't like being on 4g at all. Anyways, I texted the guy back and of course he never replied.
So I went to Verizon yesterday, thinking that maybe the sim went bad when we swapped phones. A new sum didn't make a difference. Well, the girl in the store said it was a warranty issue and that she would send us a new one on Tuesday. I even told her it wasn't the original razr we bought. I told her of the trade. She still said it was a warranty issue. At first I thought it was cool... get a new phone out of it. However, now im wondering - if I do send this razr back, and the imei numbers don't match the original razr, then would I end up being charged for a whole new phone?
At this point on just thinking of sending the replacement back and just buying a new (used) phone.
Anyone have any idea how the warranty works? Is it just on the original phone purchased? What's my best way out of this mess?

I say don't worry. You may be over-thinking on this issue.
just relax and do the swap with vzw since even they suggested so.
something unusual happened to me too.i bought my razr on craigslist too and they sent me a letter to offer me insurance and extended warranty. i called them and they told me they are doing that with 2 years old or less phones no matter where you bought it.today i still having insurance and warranty.
