XDA Members and Galaxy Note II Owners:
Some of you may have noticed a particularly interesting article on the XDA-News page today. It pertains to the presence of a feature hidden within stock, 4.1.1, Galaxy S III ROMs. This feature is an extension of the Smart Stay functionality introduced alongside the Galaxy S III and it is called "Smart Rotation". Now, before posting this, I did a quick search and a quick pass through the Galaxy Note II forum and I found no posts pertaining to this. However, if I did miss something, please let me know and I will request that the mods delete or lock my thread.
Anyway, as I read the article, and then the thread about which it was written, I started to think it is very likely that Samsung introduced this very same feature into GT-N7100/GT-N7105 ROMs as well. Considering the not-so-negligible similarities between the GT-I9300 and the GT-N7100, as well as the GT-I9305 and the GT-N7105, I think this is more than enough reason to see if this feature can be enabled on the Galaxy Note II as well.
Unfortunately, as much as I would like to create a CWM-Flashable *.zip which contains this mod, I will not have access to my desktop or notebook until the end of next week. Also, in the interest of being completely honest, I really only use my notebook to manage, restore, etc. my multiple mobile devices and not much else. As far as my desktop goes, it hasn't even been powered on since 2010. I use my Galaxy Note II and my Galaxy Note 10.1 for 99.999% of my computing tasks. Before that, I used a Galaxy S III and a Galaxy Tab 7.7 (Which, oddly enough, was my favorite device combination ever!!). Before that, I used an OG Galaxy Note and a rooted B&N NOOK Tablet. Before that, I used a Galaxy S II Skyrocket with a rooted and CM7-flashed B&N NOOK Color. See a pattern? So, I'm pretty sure you're starting to get an idea of what types of things I pack with me on a business trip. Obviously, this is one of those times when I SHOULD have packed my notebook.
In any case, since I have no reliable means of decompiling an *.apk, recompiling an *.apk, or making said *.apk part of a CWM package, I'll have to ask the community for help. So, is there anyone out there who feels up to the challenge? Yes. I know it's not really a "challenge". It's more of a task. However, you'd probably rack up a buttload of "Thanks" if you created a bug-free, CWM-Flashable package that enables "Smart Rotation". So, like I said, if anyone's interested in taking this on, please feel free to chime in. A link to the original thread is below. Good hunting!!

Im confused! This feature isn't hidden at all, its clearly presented in the display section of the settings just under smart stay.

^^No need for confusion, it's just been misunderstood/misreported in the News article as relevant to the Note II.
This feature comes stock on the N7100, no mods or anything needed to enable it, it sits alongside "Smart Stay" in the display options

Damn. Just updated my N7100 and there it was. It wasn't an option on my previous build. However, XXALJ1 and XXALJ3 seem to have it. Well, this thread was short-lived. Thanks for pointing that out.

Hmm, that clears the initial confusion as to why this was posted anyways, it would have been an impressive mod if this feature was not present by default. Cheers mate.

Hi guys
I'm thinking about getting the Galaxy S2. If I download LauncherPro will it rearrange the app tray to be in a mode where all the apps are on one page and you scroll down to look at them (ie. like in the Nexus S and basically all other Android phones)?
I love the phone but I just hate how they copied the iPhone's app tray...I hate Apple! If not I don't think it would be a deal breaker...but we'll see.
I also saw that now the Atrix's bootloader is unlocked...so now I'm unsure of which one to get. They're both good phones and now that the Atrix's bootloader is unlocked it can actually compete with the GS2 (I think?)
What do you think/suggest?
Thanks,
Elliott

Yes you can use any other launcher and most (Including LauncherPro) have vertical scolling app launchers. Personally I'm a fan of the TW app drawer after coming from LP but both have their merits.
As for the dev scene, I had a quick look over on the atrix forum and the activity on the S2 dev section seems much more active already. Not to forget that the S2 hasn't hit the US market so a good few devs probably don't have their hands on it yet. I'd say that the atrix dev section will heat up pretty soon but the S2s will still dwarf it if the current trend is anything to go by.
Not before this is another comparison thread but i believe the gs2 dev community>atrix dev com. There are a number of new chefs everyday here

Thanks guys I'm not trying to make a comparison thread between the 2 phones because I know what that can turn into. Anyway I made another thread here asking about the phone so anyone can refer to it if they want:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1148156
I've seen a little bit of talk about this now that we have some AOSP ROMs and personally would like to see this happen but I know that if I just go make a request to someone like the Cyanogenmod team I'll probably not get a response or just be told they're considering it and that's it(I could be wrong). So I'm making this thread to find out just how many people are interested in this and figure out how we should get a hold of whoever can make it happen.
I don't want to get a bunch of people to just start mass email/post/calling anyone into submission. These dev's are already doing a lot of great things for us and I don't want to ruin that. I would really rather give Google an idea of how many people want this feature or already have it through one of Samsung's ROMs and would like to keep it with AOSP so that maybe they won't give the AOSP dev's such a hard time.
So go ahead and chime in if you want multi-window for AOSP and if you know who we should get a hold of or have a good idea of how we should go about asking or if you're a dev who's tired of people always asking for features and just wants me to shut up.
In case you haven't seen cornerstone it's similar to Samsungs multi-window. http://www.onskreen.com/cornerstone/
In case you haven’t heard the story between Google and Cyanogen about cornerstone yet. http://www.geek.com/articles/mobile/samsung-adds-multi-window-despite-threat-from-google-2012109/

No thanks. CM isn't going to risk it. Google allows CM to use their proprietary apps and gives CM users access to the market and other Google services. If multi-window modes are going to risk that relationship then I don't want it.

I understand that and I know that's why CM didn't pursue it before but I think that now that Samsung has gone ahead and made multi-window available it gives us a good precedence, especially if they start using it on more phones than the note 2, like the S3. I think the big thing would be making it only work for apps that specifically state that they work with cornerstone the same way that Samsung does. I know it's a small amount of apps right now but once it hits a certain point most developers would hopefully make it standard when they make their apps and the ones that won't play nice with odd screen sizes can be left to run full screen. I'm just hoping that if they implement it they can use the same flag in apps that Samsung does so that so that app devs have a little more of a reason to make their apps use it for multi-window on AOSP and sammy ROMs.
I haven't found an app that doesn't work. Haven't really tried with games but did check a few with no problems. It works Google should roll it out.

I think in this case Google is too worried about catering to the lowest denominator - ie. the people with smaller less known android phones rather than beasts like the S3/Nexus 4/DNA/Note 2 and their misguided complaints that their new device can't run the core OS properly.
I asked Entropy about it in IRC a couple nights ago but he said it really makes no difference even with Samsung implementing Multi window. I looked into cornerstone but it seems a bit outdated. It was last updated 10 months ago.

It hasn't be updated to work with Jelly Bean yet, they are still working off of ICS source.
Thanks slick_rick and imnuts glad to hear some input from a developer. I've done a little research and haven't found any JB ROMs using it so darn. Unless it gets updated or if anyone thinks that Samsungs multi-window can be ported to non touch-wiz roms. I should go see if I can get a hold of anyone at onskreen to see if they have any plans on updating.
Howdy all,
I am looking at the Crash ROM for my Note 2, mostly because it seems to be the best at supporting the S-pen and the features that make the Note 2 more than just an oversized S3. Question though... I cant find anywhere that states if the ROM does or does not support the Verizon version of the Note 2, SCH-I605. The offical ROM posting is in one of the other dev forums, and the only post I could find asking for Vzw support wasnt answered.
Does anyone know if Crash ROM will work for me?
If not, is there a similar ROM everyone uses to maintain maximum use of the S-pen and other features?
Thanks
Why don't you link the thread? Also you could just make a backup and give it a shot. If it didn't work just restore.

This is true... I am something of a noob when it comes to this, as I've only rooted one phone and it was a few years ago, so I am hesitant to experiment too much. Especially if something is specifically NOT designed for my device. You make a good point though. Could easily Nandroid myself right back to stock.
Heres the official Crash ROM thread.

Understandable. I personally wouldn't try it because it seems to have a modem flash built in. I'm sure it would be okay, but I don't like to play with the modem.
I'm not sure what it does special with the s pen though? Any of the Verizon touch wiz bard ROMs keep use of it. So check out Eclipse (my personal choice), clean vROM, Jedi (crazy fast), or Beans

Thanks for the recommends! I will check those out. I had just read several posts and seen some vids which indicated Crash maintained more support for the pen and other Note 2 features. Some ROMs apparently dont. Im still getting up to speed on what my options are. Thanks again.

The Galaxy S4 was finally able to dualboot using the DoMaco.switch for the galaxy S4, but it only works for GSM devices. Is there any way we can tinker with this in order for it to work for us Verizon galaxy s4 customers?
by the way, heres the link:

Here is a second link from a developer for the international GS4, does anyone know how to manipulate these towards our advantage?

I'd never use it personally, I have no use to switch ROM's. All I need is AOKP.
It's kind of a cool idea but I just wouldn't ever really see anyone needing to really do this much if at all. You most likely either like touchwiz or like stock.

Also, I would think this may be easy to manipulate. Say, having two roms onto a pone that can dual boot, not just restricted to Google edition and touchwiz
If I could dual-boot rather than having to go through the whole Nandroid backup/restore process every time I want to try something new, I'd be a lot more likely to dabble in CM nightlies and the like. This'd be great.

Exactly! It's so nice to be able to switch back to your trusty DD with not much more than a reboot. There was an app called BootManager that I used on my EVO3D. You could boot as many ROMs as your SD could hold. It was great to play with CM, MIUI and others and reboot to Sense when I needed stability and reliability.
EDIT: just looked at the article. One data set is totally awesome! I wonder how easily you can swap the #2 ROM and leave the data untouched.
Do I smell ubuntu touch possibilities?

Thanks for the link. That could potentially work with some small tweaks. However that won't help me at all. Too much relies on your specific kernel and ROM versions.
The only way a tool like this is truly useful for ME is if I can dual boot anything I want for both slots. Whether that's 2 aosp, 2 tw, or 1 aosp and Ubuntu.
I really don't think either of these would work for my development purposes at this point. But I'm hopefully we'll get a dual boot option soonish.
I wouldn't even mind just a straight up text based grub style boot loader. Which would be no problem at all right now if Verizon didn't lock us up. :-/

Seems like the edits would be pretty straight forward, right? Basically changing install locations or would the bootloader business change things? even this form of dual boot would be awesome IMHO.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
It's not what I'd consider real dual boot. You are allocating cache space for the second ROM which mostly is fine since we have a 2gb cache partition. It shouldn't be that hard unless he coded it specifically for a single boot loader with an argument that will only allow it to run if it sees a specific board property or something. But that would be a huge waste of time since it seems like all those functions could be accomplished from within the stock environment.
But without dling it that's all speculation

I did a quick search but only found results related to Samsung Tabs.
Has anyone ever made a ROM for kids for our beloved S2?
I've given my 4 year old my S2 and it's running AOKP's latest ROM. She's pretty good any grabbing new apss and navigating but I'm a little leary of leaving the WIFI on for her.
Are there any ROMs for the S2 geared towards Kids? I'd rather go that route as opposed to putting any parental controls on the phone.
Dont post here...this is a development thread.
