[Q] Quick question regarding Kernels - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I've just a quick question regarding kernels (in general)
I'm currently running a JB ROM by TheBill, and it's running great. However, coming from my previous phone with a custom rom, I see there aren't many governers available. I would think that a custom kernel would do the trick, but would they work regardless of rom/OS version? Most of the ones I see seem to be for Gingerbread/Froyo, and I'm with Jelly Bean.

I didn't try this so I am not sure, but I think that kernels have their compatibilities with rom. So whatever kernel you are going to flash just read the kernel's details. Then you'll know what roms (cm7,cm9,cm10etc.) it will support. And I hope that you know kernels are phone specific.
Atrix 4G, CM7 based TopSmarts 1.3 rom, Faux123 1ghz kernel.
If I m helpful dont hesitate to thank me.

Don't try to mix and match kernels unless you know what you're doing. It will probably not work as expected, very likely not at all.
There's probably a reason for the lack of governors in some kernels, don't you think?

Well I'm running CM10 and it seems like most of the kernels haven't been developed specifically for 4.1, which is why I brought up the question.

Well, I was wondering if I could get a bit of a power boost with a kernel supporting overclocking, but if I do try and install a kernel that doesn't work out, a Nandroid backup should restore my previous kernel as well?

[Q] X10 Overclock question

I know that the overclocking possible is pretty low (I've heard 1.1Ghz is really all it can manage).
But i'd still like to try. I'm running a custom ROM currently and know it involves flashing the kernel.
Does that require a wipe or anything? And are all kernels compatible with custom ROMs? Thanks to anyone to answers..
The only kernel with 1.2Ghz overclock is doomkernel. I used it before at 1.2Ghz and no problems came up as I only use it when I'm playing heavy games.
All kernels should be compatible to all custom ROMs, except for FXP CM7 which requires it's own custom kernel or DoomKernel FXP-CM7 and requires an unlocked bootloader.
The same goes for Luke's MIUI ROM(and all that's based on it), it requires Luke's custom kernel, or DoomKernel for Luke's MIUI.
Other than that, they should work good with any custom kernels/ROMs. And no, installing a custom won't wipe anything. But it is recommended to wipe the cache and dalvik cache after installing a custom kernel.
i think the x10_029e_Th Kernel also has 1228mhz overclocking. But yes i heard somewhere the safe value is around 1.1Ghz.
Okay thanks. I have another question:
I've looked, and a lot of people recommend the TEAM ROM. But there's also the Th ROM.
I was thinking of changing off the MIUI one I'm on now. Which of those two would be best? I'm looking for performance

I am running the ThGO2 v7.5 ROM atm, i find it extremely smooth. TEAM is pretty good as well, how about you try out both of them and be the judge of it yourself as i don't find much difference in the roms unless there is major lag or something.
Well I'd love to try both, but I hate having to wipe all my data and stuff all over again.
What's the differences really? Just in a nutshell.

I think just basically the visual features are different. The performance as i said i don't notice much difference but TEAM does offers their app "Appman" which basically shows you all updates for their roms etc and different roms include different apps which i can't remember specifically which apps are included in which rom. So just try them out, i don't think you would be disappointed with any.
Okay. I was reading the Th one, said you have to backup APN? Is that data?
And I also saw three different builds for that one (stock, CM, and some other one). What are the differences there? CM has "Super speed" next to it, is that a faster ROM?

Help ROM Question

I am looking for a ROM that allows overclocking.. currently I just tried Suprarom as it's AOSP with HTC Sense so still very similar to what I am use to without a whole new learning curve. But I hate it when developers developing these ROMS don't unlock them completely Set CPU does not work.. I can not overclock so I need to know what would be the best ROM for me that allows overclocking but not too much of a new learning curve and 3D and that still works.

Overclocking does not require you to flash a different ROM. Just flash a overclockable kernel on your current ROM and you will be fine.
NOTE: Not all kernels work on every ROM.

I do not guarantee this will work on your current ROM or not.
If anything goes wrong like you are stuck on htc screen/broken wifi/4g etc reflash th kernel that came with your rom. Also if you are on hboot 1.50 you will need flash image GUI to change kernel or use fastboot method. I dont know whether these can be overclocked or not. Check their description. What is your current rom based on?
2.08.651.2/.3 or 2.17.651.5 ?vCheck whether those kernels are made for your current version.
Hope this helps.......

Kernel for unlocked Stock?

What kernel is safe to use with the stock rom unlocked?
Someone, i think Joker? Made a bunch of kernels and its in Dev section somewhere, any of the Blur kernels should be GTG. Nandroid backup and if have any issues just restore.
I downloaded one of jokers kernels, but it says cm9fix, so I'm not sure if that will work on the stock unlocked rom or not.
I'm trying the one from jokers website now that said blur 1.3 hopefully it works

Blur1.3 *SHOULD* work, never tried personally i jumped straight to CM7 then CM9 after unlocking. Worst case scenario you can just Nandroid back to your backup if it doesn't work.
Do kernels just let you overclock, or do they do more. I can't find any info on the blur1.3 on his website it was just a download link?

Depends on the kernel, the 1.3 in the name suggest that it allows you to overclock up to 1.3 ghz. Some kernels have tweaks and improvements to make them perform better, run more efficiently, etc. However I cant tell you exactly what Joker's blur1.3 does or doesn't have, other than the fact that it will allow you to overclock.
So far it's been running smooth. Not sure about all the tweaks, but I am overclocked to 1.3 without any problems. Thanks guys for all the help, I really do appreciate it.

What to look for in a kernal

Hey guys, I'm not gonna ask the dreaded question "Which Kernal is best?", but I am currently rooted and want to overclock to 1.5, but besides that, what else should I be looking for in a kernal?
What about modems (or is that embedded in the kernal)?
We only have 2 options, Entropy or Siyah and they do not include a modem.
Check the dev section for kernels & modems.

Both kernels we have offer oc abilities.
Personally I would look at stability and battery life but that is just me. Try both and see which suits your needs.
Modems are not associated with kernel and depend on your area. Whichever works the best where you are.
We have two choices here and both are incredibly stable and allow overclocking. You can't go wrong. Basically the biggest difference as far as I can see is the recovery that comes with it which is almost entirely preference.

So if I find a ROM I like but want to experiment with the other available Kernal, is it as simple as flashing my ROM first, then once booted up go into Odin and flash the other kernal i want to experiment with?
Or is the kernal that comes with a ROM the one your stuck with?

Just use CWM to flash the zips provided or Mobile Odin if you prefer it that way.
No need to use a computer to change the Kernel.

Thanks for the quick response chris,
I guess what I'm asking is if I have a rom with the Syiah kernal, is it possible to keep that same ROM but swap kernals, sorry, I just wasn't clear on what your answer meant.
I'm guessing your saying it is indeed possible and just flash the .zip for a different Kernal on top of an already installed ROM.
Sorry, I'm tired...
Changing the Kernel on 2.3.4 & 2.3.6 roms will not break anything.
For CM7, CM9, MIUI etc you have to stick with what is included or see what works with it.

For example, latest Siyah with touch recovery. Awesome for flashaholics.
Your talking of version .14 I assume, if so, doesn't it say in .13 description that .13 would be the last for Gingerbread?
Obviously it works if your using it, so i'm gonna download now...

Recommendation + Question about kernal :

My Rom is Rasbeanjelly
first , i have to say its the most stable rom !
i have Paranoid and Rotbox and a its much better rom (without offense , just my opinion).
sure a less options , but too much options its not always advantage... so thanks for that.
question
I have a question now... i am still new on android area , and the developer wrote after we the ROM i need to flash a Karnel
name Trinty , i have no idea how to do that, where to download that karnel , and what's happened if I just flash the Rom
without the kernal (what I just did), or if I can flash it now without format my all system and do the process again...
thanks a lot guys.

You flash the kernel just like the rom, AFTER you flash the rom. You can find the trinity kernel in the original development area.
You can flash the kernel anytime, you don't have to flash the rom again, just clean cache+dalvik cache after you flash the kernel.
thanks, But i heard that all ROMS COME WITH A

SO WHY I HAVE TO FLASH IT AGAIN?
AND WHAT ABOUT ALL MY APPS AND STUFF? THEY ALL WIPE?

Yes, all ROMs come with a kernel. Most of them come with the stock kernel from samsung. Trinity, ktmanta, franco and others are custom kernels, based on those from samsung but with some small modifications for performance and battery life.
I'm not an expert in android coding, not even close, but from what I understood so far kernels are some kind of drivers for the CPU, GPU and the other hardware parts like bluetooth, gps and so on.
Short story: with custom kernels you can overclock the cpu or gpu, adjust the voltages etc.
Trinity kernel is a good choice, flash it and dont chage anything.
Nothing will be wiped.
thanks... but if i dont know how to change my
GPU , CPU and stuff, that it actually will improve anything ...
i guess if i was an expert its should help me... but for some one that not understand what the advantage and disadvantage of each parameter
you recommended that also?

It really depends on what you want out of your device/ROM. KTManta lets you hand-set a lot of tweaks, but also benchmarks just a smidge slower than other ROMs, for example, while Trinity is fairly fast.

No. It's an issue with Android 4.2 from what I understand

There's a thread in here somewhere about just that. Have a search at it, although there's really no one kernel that's "best"-- they'll all interact with your ROM of choice, so it becomes a kernel/ROM combo to look at. Personally, Carbon's stock kernel does best by me.
@samwheat Oh look, the person who complains about how atrocious his battery life is and how it's all the device's fault is back to try and recommend kernels and ROMs to users.
for a lot of modification, KTManta is your best choice I think.
