Water damaged Amaze probably just needs LCD replacement (phone powers on, vibrates, makes sound, bottom of LCD screen makes a weak attempt at glowing).
Bought LCD screen from ebay, decided I didn't have time to attempt the repair myself. Took it to a phone repair joint who has given the unit back, claiming that their attempt to separate the LCD/digitiser (the heat applied) caused the glue to bubble up and they didn't think it'd be a clean repair. It looks like they attempted to pry at the chassis in 3 places, so I have no interest in arguing with them.
Essentially, I'm in Australia but travelling to SF in a month. Can anybody (privately?) recommend a place to have the phone repaired within a few days? Will discard the new LCD screen and simply have someone replace the LCD+Digitiser combo for simplicity.
I read the forum rules and seeking advice on a commercial repair place in SF doesn't seem to break any rules.
Appreciate any advice.

If you're going to replace it as a combo it's really not all that hard. The separating the LCD from the digitizer is the only really dangerous part, as long as you can follow instructions...should only take an hour or so.

LCD Screen
Warning: Images are very high resolution
Part Number: 60H00037-00M
Willing to accept any sensible offer and would prefer a UK sale.
If you're in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee I'm willing to give it to you in person if you want to save postage but it would have to be at a mutually convenient time.
The screen is immaculate - I removed the plastic cover when it arrived in the post but haven't used it at all.
N.B. The part number is very important as I believe there are 3 different types for different versions of the Tytn.
==============================================
I used to wonder how people managed to break their LCD screens so carelessly but now that I'm one of them feel a great sense of pity and sorry for them
Seriously though, I broke my LCD screen the other week and I've been kicking myself since. I went and bought a replacement LCD for it but I couldn't get it working in my phone because I broke a little black component that holds the ribbon cable onto the contacts.
Anyway, now I have a broken phone and a spare LCD screen so I'm going to sell the bits as spares if anyone is interested.
Right now I'm going to sell the LCD screen as I've not decided if I want to break up the phone itself, especially as it still contains all my data
Dropped my Thunderbolt at the bar last night and, unfortunately, the screen cracked =(.
Where would be the best place to buy some new glass? Does something like iFixit exist for non-Apple devices =P? Also, on a side note, from a previous accident I had with my phone almost a year ago, the backlight for back and search dedicated buttons died. While I have my phone apart, is there an easy way to replace those, or are they attached to something larger? In the mean time, I'll keep using "keyboard backlight" to keep them always disabled =/
You can buy a new screen from amazon. There are repair videos on YouTube that are pretty easy to follow too. The backlights for the capacitive buttons I'm not sure about.

The reviews on Amazon make me weary... it seems to be hit or miss in terms of quality.

Just a tip, I fix phones for a living and it is incredibly difficult to remove the LCD without breaking it, I would highly recommended buying the LCD and digitizer together. Use repairs universe or wholesalegadgetparts.com, I've had great experiences with both.
I can see where you are coming from but all of the replacements I saw were both in one piece.

Just a quick update for future reference:
I bought a digitizer ONLY from Repair Universe (RU) originally, but after reviewing the take apart guides/videos for the Thunderbolt, I figured it'd be smarter and easier to buy the LCD + Digitizer pre-assembled. So I returned my digitizer to RU.
RU didn't have the LCD+Digi combo, so I checked wholesalegadgetparts.com (WSGP) per brandogg's suggestion. They not only had the combo, but they had the digitizer MUCH cheaper than RU, keep that in mind if you're buying from the two.
The only problem was WSGP had the LCD+Digi on back-order until mid-May, and I didn't want to to wait. So I got onto eBay and bought the LCD+Digi from a high-ranked seller that a personal friend had purchased iPhone LCD's from before.
Received the eBay screen and an hour later, I have a fix Thunderbolt! It actually feels like a new phone since there are no tiny scratches or nicks on the screen! Not to mention cleaning out all the dust/dirt/grossness from the inside made my proximity sensor function correctly, huzzuh!
Thanks for the help and suggestions, you've saved my phone and wallet!
I realize the original poster has resolved his issue, but I'm posting this just as a reference for others.
My lovely wife has cracked her screen to the point it needed to be replaced twice in the last year. First time I paid $100 (including parts) to have a local place do it. The person did a poor job, claimed it was a difficult repair, and the sensitivity was wrong. When she cracked it a second time I fixed it myself using a screen from http://www.directfix.com/ and used this youtube video. I found it fairly easy and replaced it in about an hour taking my time. After my repair, it works fine although I did have to clean out some dust once (not as well sealed as factory obviously). I believe the screen, plastic pry tool, and small screw drivers was around $64 including tax & shipping. I have no connection to the company that I purchased the screen and tools from(just stumbled on them via google), but I am happy with their service.
I am an engineer and do have a little experience taking apart other electronics, but I am by no means particularly good at it. It's definitely doable by anyone with the patience, and I had no trouble replacing just the screen and not the LCD. It may have been a bit easier for me as it was the second time the phone was taken apart.
I've made Gorilla Glass a requirement for my wife's next phone...
It was definitely easier since the screen had already been replaced and the replacement LCD did not have the same adhesive that the original would have had...and the Thunderbolt does have Gorilla Glass.
Also, gorilla glass is made for scratch protection not impacts.

Hey everyone,
I had the unfortunate mess of dropping my Evo face flat onto some concrete today. I didn't play the insurance plan so I don't have that to fall back on. Only the glass is broken; the digitizer is working perfectly fine. I emailed my university's Sprint rep to find out if replacing just the glass is a possibility, and if the price point is low enough, I'll gladly just mail it in. However, I heard that chances are, I'll end up having to settle with a refurbished unit and pay money on top of that. I'm comfortable opening up my own electronics and replacing parts, but I've never dealt with replacing just the glass before. I know I'd need to melt the adhesive with a hair dryer in order to remove the glass, but are there any techs out there willing to divulge the exact process on how to remove the glass? I would be eternally grateful!

Also it's my understanding that the digitizer is built into the glass. Glass and digitizer are words used interchangeably. Hope that helps. Good luck

I don't usually recommend YouTube but that for tutorials since most of them don't take the time to explain theory which leave a lot of new users in trouble but in this case watching any of the tear down videos will actually help you much more then written instruction

Glass can carry an electrostatic charge, its because of this ability that glass is preferred when building things like copiers(the charge keeps the paper in place) and touchscreens. The built in digitizer can read subtle changes to the capacitance in the glass.
I can replace the whole screen for ya.

I looked at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxMxgnMmm60 for a tear down of the actual phone. Then I was going to assume that removing the screen would be similar to every other phone (i.e. the OG Evo) and would have went by a YouTube video and an iFixit walk through to do it.
As for the glass, I thought the purpose of the hair dryer/heat gun was to melt the bonding layer keeping the glass adhered to the digitizer grid. But, taking a second look at replacement parts I can buy, they don't just sell the glass; it has to come in a whole pre-adhered package (which is much better). I'm guessing the glue that's actually melted is the glue that keeps the glass/digitizer adhered to the casing? If that's how things are, then that's a little less scary than what I originally thought. It's really just this whole melting-the-glue procedure and having-a-really-hot-item-near-my-phone that's keeping me from doing this myself.
And I work with Dielectric Elastomers, so capacitors are a topic I'm quite interested in. But thanks for the quick background anyway =].
That said though, I found http://www.cpr-nyc.com (CPR = cell phone repair, clever huh?) and they look pretty reputable. I'll have to stop in their store this weekend and find out how much the procedure will cost. If it's under $100 bucks, I'll probably consider it (the glass & digitizer itself is $50 without shipping). Do any of you NYC goers have any experience with them? No disrespect to tuscani1821, but they're a subway trip away and unless you'll do it for much cheaper than they quote, I'll have to go with them. Would you mind enlightening me on how you would go about replacing the screen anyway? I would be very grateful.
Thanks everyone for chiming in!
They quoted me for 130 here in Missouri and they didn't have the part. They told me I would have to check back with them weekly to see of they had the part. That was a month ago. I just shipped it to HTC and got the screen replaced by them. (I would not recommend this unless it's a last resort)

Thanks for giving me some insight! $130 for just the repair, or $130 for parts and repair? And if you don't mind me asking, how much did HTC repairing your phone set you back? Also, how long did that take?
Maybe physically going to the store I can haggle as well as make sure they get the part soon. I'll share my experience when I go make a visit.
Ugh HTC was a nightmare. Originally quoted me for 140 then when I mailed it to them they didn't get it for 2 weeks (not sure if that's their fault or usps) then they requoted me 220 for the repair when they got it and didn't tell me why. So I just paid bc they charge you a 45 dollar diagnostic fee just to look at it and by this point I'm 3 weeks no phone. They sent it back quick. Got it back and fired it up and they had re locked my s-off lazy panda bootloader and erased my files. (I halfway expected this even though it had nothing to do with a screen). Then my phone won't activate on sprint, sprint had to do a special thing (quick ticket?) that took a day with adding my esn to the network. Took me forever to figure out what the hell that was about and eventually got a hold of someone from HTC.
Turns out they replaced my entire motherboard and that's what also led to the extra charges. I asked what they did that for (thinking that it was simply spite about my s-off bootloader) he said he didn't know. So they basically charged me (punished me) for having s-off because my phone was working just fine, just had a broken screen, which doesn't require mobo replacement. He supposedly escalated my call to a special team that I have yet to be contacted by and that was last week. I'm going to call again tomorrow and get some answers. Needless to say I wouldn't do that again. But I was in a bad spot and needed a phone and didn't think I'd get this much bs.
CPR seems to know what they are doing and even though I didn't end up getting to use them, I definitely would have had they had the parts. A quick look online and I noticed that lcd screens and digitizers are (separate and together) are now in Stock from some wholesalers. I'm sure you'll have better luck with them. They said 160 I believe with parts and labor. But that wasn't definitive bc they didn't have access to the part at the time.
Phew

Find a replacement screen for $50, watch a video on repair online, and fix it yourself. Not that difficult once you get the hang of it.

You can buy all you want on ebay.
I had a carabiner case, which was attached to my bag, so the phone was hanging off of my bag. I put my bag down in the car, and closed the door...on the phone. The phone has a nice, tiny crack at the top left of the screen, rendering the touchscreen portion from working. At the time of the incident, the screen was still working, but after 3 days, the screen started to "die off". Now, the screen is not working, as in not turning on, but everything else is still good (I think...the sound's working, the phone's turning on as if there is no problem). I'm living in Belgium and I've called Samsung Belgium, but they weren't much help. Checked the store that I bought it from, but they weren't much help either. I've decided that I'm gonna just replace the screen myself. I've looked online for a similar issue, but I've found nothing. My question is, what do I need to get to begin repairing my phone.
I'll post pictures of the phone later.
You need an display panel and digitizer (they come as one unit. I've seen them on eBay here for £119 for the entire screen assembly and (in this case white) outer frame. It's a very easy job to take apart the S3 and attach such a unit to the motherboard as the S3 is not a complicated assembly at all.

Thanks...another question, what kind of protection you got on your phone?
There's an iFixit teardown on YouTube. Just watch that. Basically though, you take the battery/SIM/Micro SD out, remove the screws at the back to take the rear panel off and expose the motherboard. There's one more screw as I recall, a few ribbon connectors, an aerial clip, a protector over upper portion of the unit which just pulls away and you then remove this and the motherboard and you have an exposed unit (the same unit you buy ready assembled from a number of outlets. As I said, the cheapest I've seen one is for £119 from a seller on eBay which I believe was refurbished.

I use a TPU case and a pretty bog standard screen protector. After my girlfriend broke her screen completely (to the point of not even switching on) from a drop of less than two feet and a friend of mine had the same happen I'm massively paranoid about my S3 breaking and am even contemplating selling it for that reason, though it is reassuring to know I can fix it easily enough I suppose.

So, an update. I've had a screen protector the entire time. It didn't occur to me to check the crack. Turns out the crack is inside the glass, which means that the screen is not cracked. Does this change anything?

Not really screen and digitizer are bonded together, with the right tools you might separate them but how are you going to bond the new digitizer to the old screen?

I just bought a new screen digitizer thingie, so it's on it's way right meow.
Hi everybody. So, I've had my S3 since April.. it was a birthday gift. I love it and baby it as if it were my own child.. yesterday I had taken my Otter Box Commuter case off to take out my battery because my phone had restarted itself, but had been stuck in some odd boot loop. So wah lah, took the battery out and put it back in and Bob's your uncle it fired right up. Normal.. now I've only dropped it twice in the past three months I've had it and well, nothing had happened to it, except for some minor scuffs on the back casing.. yesterday, being the second time I've dropped it, hit the concrete pretty bad but on the back side only.. it may have impacted a corner of the phone though but never flipped on the screen side. Well I immediately put my case on after going back in the house and today, actually just about 30 minutes ago, im just scrolling down my Facebook page and I feel and hear a click sound.. at this point I was just thinking my case had shifted or moved in some way but I started looking at my Facebook again and there is now a crack going from about the middle right side of my screen curving up towards the top left all the way to the bezel of the phone just beside the LED.. Now come on.. I know we all make mistakes, but I didn't really expect my screen to crack this early.. especially for the price I paid for this device. Has anybody had this happen to them before, and if anyone could point me to a good screen replacement place it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.. ps, the top glass or screen is all that cracked.. The LCD and Digitizer seem to be OK.

There are guides to replace the screen only but it's fairly involved and requires things like heat guns. Obviously it voids warranty but having an international version in US means you probably have no warranty at all.
The unit is often sold with screen but you can buy the glass only but you'd want to get a professional to do it I'd say,
Now when you're asking to recommend a good "Screen replacement place" what do you mean? You want us to recommend a shop? Not really knowing anythign about where you are, it's unlikely we can do that. Any descent repair shop / service centre should be able to help.
Please be aware, the general section is not the place for support threads. Should be in Q&A. I've reported the post to be moved.
I have read about the screen replacement and using a heat gun so yes I will have somebody who knows what they're doing get ahold of it. Do you know any long term effects of using a phone with a cracked screen are? Like other damages that could occur? Besides the glass cracking even more than it already is.. Thanks for the reply though, and sorry about the post in the wrong area..

Theres a digitiser under the glass somewhere so it's possible to pierce that after some time if the glass gives. It's obviously weaker now. I would definitely recomend getting it changes ASAP.
