Decline EVO update? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hey guys, finally upgraded to the LTE after having the original EVO since launch day. Anyway, I just got the phone yesterday and a notification keeps pestering me to take a "system update." I wish to root in the future, so am I right in assuming I shouldn't take this? If so, how do I dismiss the notification? Thanks. Sorry if this is noobish, I haven't been in the game for a while.

You should be fine to root regardless.

I would decline the update. Check your hboot number and proceed from there if you're planning to obtain S-OFF.

Yea, if you have hboot 1.12, don't update. If I were you and it was hboot 1.12, I would root and s-off, then flash the latest stock rooted rom

Decline the update if you planning on getting root and S-off. is more easy to achieve it with the olders software.

You can downgrade from the other hboots but it is a pain. If your looking to just root though you'll be fine.

There is actually S-OFF methods for all HBOOTs (1.12,1.15, and 1.19). If you are still on HBOOT 1.12 use lazypanda. If you are on anything higher just use dirtyracun.

Thanks everyone. I definitely plan on attaining S-off. I'm on hboot 1.15.

This community is awesome.

I always wait a week before updating, unless you want done of the nasty surprise.

Dirty racun seems really intimidating. I Only have 64-bit windows 7 computers and no blank cd to run ubuntu anyway so I'm out of luck. Is flashing roms with s-on easier than gaining s-off? I'm considering working that way instead.

I saw one guy say he used win 7- 64 bit and was successful.... but I would follow the recommendations in the DirtyRacun thread just to be safe

Haha I want to try that so bad seeing as I have very few other options. But if anything goes wrong they're just gonna say I didn't follow directions. I'm really tempted to take the plunge though.

You dont need a blank cd to boot ubuntu, you can do it right of a usb memory stick.

I was going to try that, but I read through the thread and lady x was pretty adamant about USB sticks causing some sort of problem that they wouldn't help with.

What u can do is create a vhd or another partition and run ubuntu on a USB and install it on the VHD/partition. Then reboot into it and follow the process. When ur done its as simple as removing the VHD/Partition and readding the space back to ur main HDD

food for thot(possible downgrade?)

happened across this this morning:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1547695
(thanks to jcase on twitter)
value could be a couple different things,to us:
1)downgrade if there was an explolit in older firmware
2)use it to sneek on the signed eng hboot by using that in the third step instead of an s-on ship hboot, then running an RUU with hboot removed to finish recovering the phone
id love to try it,but i dont have a linux machine and my linux skills are basically none

Yeah, I am looking forward to Revolutionary or someone to make it a one click routine. That would be nice.
Interesting. If I were to guess, I would say that HBOOT unlocks something in order to prep for a flash of a PH98IMG.zip ... when you intentionally brick the phone by messing with the flashable file you've left it in an unlocked state, which you can take advantage of after rebooting by directly copying to the raw partition a bootable image. Obviously some knowledge of the underlying phone hardware is needed in order to find, modify, or build from scratch this bootable image and finding the proper partition into which it needs to be copied -- the directions in the linked thread are for a different phone and different code and probably different partition names would be required.
This may not even work on the Rezound.
And, I should add, the potential to permanently and irrevocably brick your phone is quite high.
It might work with the signed eng hboot. I would try it if I had a backup device. Hell if someone has one that is in terrible condition that is going to do an insurance claim reguardless, I would ask them to try it out. Or have me help them try it.
I'm gonna give this a shot. Worse thing that happens is, I go and buy another Rezound (or something else).

Yeah- I remember how easy it was on the Incredible to root. Then on the Thunderbolt it was a little harder (for those who aren't comfortable with adp commands) and eventually a one-click process came up. Now, it would be great to have something like that on the Rezound and maybe, just maybe, be able to root without this big, ugly UNLOCKED / RE-LOCKED showing in H-Boot!

awww yeah! here's hoping for some positive results!!
was just going to post this last night. good luck guys!
For anyone that wants to try it
Start with the OTA PH98IMG.zip
Then swap with our shipped PH98IMG.zip
So you should be trying to go from Hboot 2.11 to 2.10
Then when in linux, recover with the signed eng hboot image we have.
After that, I would recommend using fastboot to turn secure flag off (assuming you didn't brick and it worked)
Then flash a homemade PH98IMG.zip with everything except hboot in it.
What should be done first is identify which emmc block hboot is before you start this process.
woah... if we have a "signed" eng HBOOT why cant we just flash it over the one we already have?

My 3vo is coming back tomorrow!

So after roughly a week and few days my 3vo which I had only two days with before sending in, is coming back with all new front assembly, very excited! Now I'm curious I have not gottena chance to root this phone but I do know it is on 1.5 hboot will that be a serious problem or is there a decent work around?

After coming from rooting my LG (press a button in superonclick to root, then running a batch file to put on CWM), the htc is a mega pain to get access.
The common theme I've noticed after being in 3 different sub-forums is that all users complain about the manufacturers not releasing code. I'm not surprised the companies don't but it makes everything so hard. So just realise it isn't just HTC being a pain it's pretty much every company.
Very glad that there is hope for 1.5's Hbooters I do wonder what hboot version HTC will try to enforce on the E3D when ICS comes via OTA.

[Q] New to rooting.

So, I'm new to rooting, and, as such, after looking around the forums, I haven't found a similar thread (for the EVO 3D) about what ROM I should get. I've been looking through the CDMA forum at different ROMS, but I'm not sure which one to use. I won't be downgrading to 1.4 HBOOT, since I don't have a linux PC or the balls to do it, so I will be using the HTC Unlocker. All I want is to have the ability to use the Hotspot/tethering for free, because I'm not about to pay Sprint an extra 30 dollars/mo on top of my 65 dollar/mo plan right now.
So, if anyone has any help, I'd really appreciate it, because I have no idea what I'm doing.

My friend is saying there's more ways to root your phone other than the HTC Unlocker or the downgrade to 1.4 hboot. First off cause I don't have a linux PC, and my friend's friend said he used a program to root it on windows.
EDIT: After doing some research, I found this: http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-3d-hacks/how-to-downgrade-hboot-1-50-to-1-40-on-htc-evo-3d-new/ and this: http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-3d-hacks/how-to-root-htc-evo-3d/

Yeah, but the thing is, I've been comparing HTC Unlock with downgrade and root, the only difference, besides true s-off, is you aren't able to have you own splash screen with HTC Unlock (Big whoop.) So, instead of taking the time (albeit a few minutes) To downgrade my phone and to root it that way. I think I'll wait for ICS to come out, then for the HTC Unlock to update for it, since I rather like the way ICS will look, also as I've said before, all I really want is the ability to use the Sprint Hotspot without paying an extra 30 bucks. That and with the HTC unlock, I can still put on a custom ROM, if I so desire, once they've been updated for ICS.
Ohhhh... Where should I start.... Well for one s-off means a lot, not just splash screens... Which I love my custom splash screen btw.... Makes my phone extremely unique...
If I was in your shoes.. I would downgrade the hboot... Root it.. and install the tethering app... And be done with it... Regardless of when the ota comes out for ics.. that means very very little...
Once the ota does come out, ROM devs will be all over it, and custom ics roms will be popping up all over the place...
"All I really want is tether...." No its not.... Trust me once you dive into the rooted EVO 3d and you realize how the phone is suppose to run, not how it runs stock you will be glad you went through the trouble with the downgrade...
Do what you do, as long as your happy and enjoying your 3vo that's what's matters...

Well, my biggest problem with trying to downgrade is I'm having trouble finding a way to downgrade with just windows, since I don't have Linux. Unless I just didn't read it right, I think someone said that the link I posted about downgrading with windows is outdated?
EDIT: Why would I install a tethering app when, supposedly, I can use the Sprint Hotspot, which is supposed to be better than the tethering app? Also, I have quite a few apps on my phone and I'm not sure I'll be able to use them all still if I root my phone.

Well, for me, there's several issues with that. 1) I'm using a laptop that isn't mine for the time being, and i don't want to go and make a new partition. 2) If I were to wait till the parts for my new desktop to come in, I'd have to wait till the end of March anyways for a new processor to come out. 3) I've never even messed with Linux.

You s-off by reading the directions on the sites that have been referenced many times on this forum.
I got the wire trick on a bootcamped macbook pro running windows 7 32bit
took me like 30 minutes though.
Also worth noting that in this culture of Jailbreaking, S-Off, and Rooting, usually multiple developer teams start hacking the next generation devices, but only one vulnerability method is promoted and published at a time.
Why?
Because the OEMs are simultaneously trying to patch any security loopholes the community finds and locate more overlooked loopholes themselves.
If the public hack gets fixed on next round of software, there is a good possibility other unpublished methods will still be successful.
Gotta keep aces in the hole...
Hopefully the next OTA won't 'fix' this exploit. We shall see. I S-OFF'd with my HP laptop. Took me a little while and a couple tries. I had the video with the wire trick up to help me with the timing on it.
I never could get s-off I have a Mac and I couldn't get the wire timing right the few times I have had access to a pc... To be fair I used a rather short paper clip... Im still s-on :-(

My understanding was because of the physical nature of the phone a hardware change is required to prevent s-off.

For me, the only difficult part of getting S-OFF was the timing. I kept moving my wire from one contact to the other and getting the "STILL SOBER" message on the CMD window. But I found it works more easily for me if I had the wire held onto the pin 1 contact and then tapped ground twice instead of the other way around like the video shows.
I also got S-OFF using my desktop, with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and an 1100W PSU.

[Q] s-off on Hboot 2.49 firewater problem

Hi, this will be my first post but ive been a member for a while just never had a problem big enough to create a post till now. so this is my second max the first one was on 4.3 and rumrunner did the trick, but I have been reading almost every thread that had to do with s-off of hboot 2.49, i read about going to old drivers switching ports and cables basically did everything. I am on verizon and have temp root with weaksauce and have root but when firewater runs and its start chugging it either chugs one or two and then returns to the command line, one time it kept chugging to bottle 11(figured it was on a loop) so thats where i am at any guidance would be much appreciated. btw, i tried using the firewater temp root but i get a failed getting root so cant go on from there, just thought id share that.
By temp root, do you mean weaksauce?
Edit: reread and I see that you do. Sometimes these things just work randomly, I'd just keep trying. Maybe post a screenshot of exactly what your PC screen looks like when trying with weaksauce root?

I will, theres a lot of pople that have used firewater and it works i just might be one of those special cases, but keep watching this thread hopefully someone will get me on he right track
I just had an idea. I was reading about weaksauce and it takes about a minute for root to become available after device boot. So, maybe you could try waiting a minute after the part where the device reboots to execute the next command.

Also, make sure you are using a USB 2.0 port. People in other forums have reported issues with 3.0.

lol, ok so my computer has 6 usb ports four 2.0 and 2 for 3.0 i tried at first on 2.0 then reading on people said try using 3.0 then i stopped at 3.0, but when you run firewater it tells you this:
opening first bottle 1
chugging..........
after this it should say you are now s-off and blah blah blah(saw a pic someone put on one thread) what it does to me is:
opening first bottle 1
chugging..........
C:\Users\Desktop\ etc
basically to me means it failed because it went back to command line

found a pic almost like that but with the chugging
Strange. It might just not be possible on the latest firmware. Most s-off methods seems to work better if you've already unlocked the bootloader. But with the VZW model, you need to get s-off before unlocking bootloader, which I think might be a big reason why people have so much trouble with vzw s-off. I'm not too familiar with HTC, is there an official way to roll back the firmware without s-off?
