I had a galaxy tab 2 wifi but it was stolen. I did not install any security apps on my tab so i cant locate it. Is it possible to download apps on the market that can brick the device or apps that are not compatible which can also brick it. so that he cant access my files and the tab.
please help. i tried downloading many apps in the market but it failed.
Try Where's My Droid app to locate it. Another possibility is Plan B. I used Where's My Droid to find my wife's phone. Will only work if the device is still powered on and connected to the Internet. Just go to the Google Play Store via a Web browser to send the install to your tab.

Well, you can't download anything to it unless it connects via Wi-Fi. Once it does that, you may be able to locate it using "Where's My Droid" or "Plan B". If you have already sent those apps to the device via the Play Store, they will install once the device connects (unless the thief knows how to wipe it to factory stock before they try to use it). Maybe if you are lucky, the battery died and if they get a charger for it and get it connected to Wi-Fi the apps will install and start e-mailing you its location.
However, if it had a password of any kind to login, they would have to wipe it to even get it connected to another Wi-Fi network, so you are likely just out of luck. I know of no app you could send to deliberately brick it.
This is why Samsung has sites like http://www.samsungdive.com, so you can try to track, lock or wipe your device remotely. I just tried it on my Galaxy S III and it mapped it exactly to my house where it is.
Try plan b ! It's supposedly awesome and its supposed to work great!

i already tried wheres my droid and plan b. but i didnt receive any email. so my last resort is to brick the device by downloading apps from the market. ill try again plan b.
thanks for the samsungdive tip. i didnt know that feature. ill try that on my other samsung phone.
The apps needs to be registered on the phone. You can't just install the app from play store without registering on the phone, if it was possible it would be a serious breach, i could just log in with any of my friend's email, install things from play store and mess up their phone.
Don't think there is any app to "brick" the phone.

Hi Experts,
Sorry if I sound a little crude and maybe a novice(I am), but I have been a Symbian user so far and finally decided to take the plunge to Android. I received my HTC Hero a couple of days back and tried to connect to Android Market with my google account, but in vain. Tried to use the Google Mail app, but again failed. Am I missing something here? Tried to use HTC Sync with my lappy, but no success.
Provider: Orange UK.
Connectivity: Wifi (No data plan on Sim)
Laptop OS: Win 7 64-bit (connecting usin USB cable)
I have read a lot of threads on xda and on the internet and tried quite a few things, but no success.
Thanks in advance,
Jag
Closing thread as there is another one though not for UK. Will wait for that to resolve.

I had the same problem, and some packet sniffing showed that Android tries to contact google on port 5228/tcp. Our work wifi firewalls non-standard ports, presumably this is why I cannot download from the market (Hangs forever at "starting download") or sign into gtalk over wifi. Switching to 3G data, everything works fine (though the Market stalls a lot).
I had an issue where it wouldn't accept my details unless I entered them in on the initial setup screen.
i.e. if I skipped past the "set up google mail" bit, and went back later, it didn't work.
workaround was reverting to factory install and making sure to enter my account details at the start (and I used wifi since I was in my home, so it should definately work)
It worked for me after i manually set the APN for my carrier.
Please same problem, HTC Magic 32B Ion 1.6, how can I do?
Yes you should always try to log into google at the very start otherwise some problems can be caused.

All OK!
I did a wipe and all ok
How am I supposed to do this after a factory reset if I connect thru wifi, since I must first enable wifi radio and then put a password, so that means I would have to skip the "wizard" so that defeats the purpose of factory resetting everything... please help.
Solved
Logically, what you say is right, but practically it actually worked
1) after the factory reset, i get the google signin screen,
at that moment, my wifi wont be enabled.....but still i went ahead and entered the username and
password and clicked the signin button
as expected it throwed a message saying "it cant connect"
along with it it also said may be you are not on wifi with a
"connect to wifi button", which will take to the wifi screen where you can connect to wifi and it comes back to the google signin screen, where you login again....
.............there you go it signs in successfully now.
Hope this helps
I have this same issue on my galaxy s. Even factory reset and singing in at the beginning doesnt help. What should i do?

Hi
I am facing the same problem with my device (Galaxy S2). I am able to surf web with the stock phone browser using wifi, but apps won't connect. Apps connect only through GPRS.
I was wondering if you were able to resolve the issue. Could you please help me ?
Anyone else has a solution to this problem.
My phone has the stock firmware, purchased the phone today.
Apps have never worked over wifi, but the browser works.
Cannot download anything on wifi, for that only my GPRS/3G works.
Please help
I have been using my desire for over a year and it has been great, but now I also have this problem of no market or google mail over my WiFi. I was going to do a factory reset and start again, but after reading the posts on this thread this may not resolve the problem.
Has anyone found a fix for this problem
I have this problem too. I doubt it's the manufacture deliberately use its stock sbf to stop people using wifi to save data bandage. So they can make more money with the mobile operators!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1281034
me too I guess
well i was having a similar problem(would connect to wifi, the browser worked but not the apps).in my case, i have my router setup with the dhcp server off(you have to assign an static ip address manually to every device you that you are going to connect to the router) i solved my problem by enabling the "use static ip" check box and filling all the information(ip address, gateway, netmask, dns 1 and dns 2)on the advance settings tab in wifi settings.
hi all,
i'm sure i'm being really really stupid here, but i just cannot seem to connect to the market, or to download anything onto the phone at all....
i got it and then rooted it using dayzee's gude (thanks!). i now want to install debian, so i need to download the terminal app (or something similar) from the market. however, i didn't have a google a/c - so i created one online. this involved an sms being sent to the phone which was received, code typed in and account authorized, etc. then i tried to connect to the market from the phone, so typed in all the information to set it up and got this message:
Code:
Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server.
This could be a temporary problem or your sim card may not be provisioned for data services. If it continues, call customer care.
Now, I've tried this many times over the course of the day (today) and in different locations, too. I even tried registering another account from the fone - same response for all of these. Has anyone had similar problems, or got any suggestions about how to get around this?
one other thing i tried was to d/l stuff from http://www.cyrket.com/ but that also seemed to require that i sign into marketplace with a google account and i couldn't see any way to not do this.
extra info: t-mobile uk standard contract and phone, everything is pretty much 'virgin' still except for the fact i rooted it and have adb pushed the debian.img onto the sdcard as indicated on http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Installing_Debian
many thanks.
This has happened to a lot of people including myself. The only solution I am aware of is to factory reset your phone, and enter your Google account details in the initial setup.
This will solve your problem, but it does mean a reset.
thanks - that worked!! luckily i haven't done too much with the phone yet, so it was easy....
Im having the same problem atm
Bought my phone last august. Had a few problems this week (UIP need to hard reset?) So did a hard reset and now I cant get on the market to download my apps
Phone is rooted, Tried download thing but it doesnt have any UK T MOBILE option only NL/US/AUS

Any help?
I rebuilt my phone last night and re-installed all my apps from the market. Today I have tried to log in to check for any updates and all I get is Server Error and a retry button.
I am on Orange in the UK and am using wifi and 3G mobile data but it still wont work.
Market.android.com on the PC does work though.
Is the market down, how do I even check if it is just me?
Thanks

No other issues for me, however, I have decided to try one more time and reflash the rom, maybe it was something I inadvertently did.
maybe a dns issue. try pinging market.android.com and then try the ip in your url bar.

I've had the same problem with a different device, and never found an answer.
In fact, I trade that phone (Evo 3D) for this S2 (i777).
Heres the thing, for some reason my phone refuses to work on the school's wifi. Its annoying. On my last phone, I thought that it was just that phone, but apparently its not. Now I'm having the same problem on my S2. I can get notifications every now and then but cant use the wifi at all. Sometimes, randomly throughout the day, I can get about 1 - 5 minutes out of it, but then it just stops working again.
I kinda think it has something to do with my Gmail being synced or something, I really have no clue. It has the word "freaking" in it. I just dont think its a coincidence that BOTH phones in a row have the exact same problem. I didnt have the problem with any iPhone I've ever had.
I really need wifi, and I dont wanna get a new phone, so I would appreciate it a lot if some knew what this is about.
It connects and everything. Says it has great signal. Just doesnt work.
Im running the stable CM9.1, straight from the Cyanogenmod website. So its their kernel and all that good stuff. Android 4.0.4.
I know the ROM isnt the problem cause every ROM I flashed on my Evo didnt help at all.
Anyway, any help or tips anyone can give would be great. Thanks!
By the way, the wifi works perfectly fine every where else. Home, College, friend's house. etc.
You need to verify your school does not require special network settings or a proxy.
If you can see the network and connect then its just a settings issue. Have you tried reverting to stock?

I can connect just fine, as normal. It just doesn't allow me internet access.
By stock, do you mean the stock ICS Touchwiz? No. But I guess its worth a try. The only reason I didnt see that as a solution is because on my last phone, I had the same problem whether I was running stock or not.
It sounds like you need a proxy address to access the Internet at your school. Talk to the administrators of the network.

They have proxies restricted from what I know. I dont know too much about proxies, but I tried using a few different proxy apps and none of them worked.
And it doesnt do this to other peoples' phones. Why is it just mine? My other phone was an HTC on Sprint. It just seems like a weird coincidence that both phones have the same problem, and they're two completely different devices. That's why I thought it had to do with Gmail, I know that sounds stupid, but its the only thing the two phones have in common.

Two different phones and same issue. Friends phones work but yours doesn't. You have a PICNIC issue.
Problem in chair not in computer (phone). Talk to the network admin or help desk. You're probably using a wrong setting or password. The admin should be able to help you by looking at the logs.

I get what you're saying, believe me, but I just dont see how its a wrong setting. Its default settings ( until I tinkered around trying to fix it). I assume all of my less-knowledgeable friend's phones are default settings too. So it just doesn't seem to make sense that the default settings on two of my phones are the wrong settings, while every other phone seems to have it right to begin with.
I get what your saying, but I cant just talk to our Tech Guy at our school. It just doesnt work like that at my school. Lol. Thats why I'm asking for help on here.
And I dont think the multiple ROMs I've tried have the wrong defaults also.
Then sit down with a friend and make sure EVERY setting Is the same. Make sure you are both running android and using the same browser. If they are on CM too that would be best.
It sounds like something is blocking you from accessing the Internet while on the schools network. I don't think we will be of much help.

I can try the thing with my friend. Im just really the only one in my group of friends that's into, and actually knows a lot about Android devices. So they dont seem like much help. Haha.
And I was hoping people could tell me some ideas I havent tried yet. I know Android, but I dont know much about wireless networks and all that.
I'd love to help more, but since only one wifi network doesn't work for you it has to be something with that network.

Do you need to log in to your school's network? If so, when you enter your login id, if there's a line for anonymous id too, add your login id there as well. In other words, you have to enter your login id twice. Once where it says "login id" and again for "anonymous id."
If that doesn't work, what would help here is more info about how you connect (WPS, WPA, etc.).

It doesn't require me to log in at all. It worked perfectly fine on my old iPhone without having to log in. And it never redirected me in the browser. I've tried everything I can think of.
Proxies (Dont work)
I've tried static IP.
Factory resetting to stock Android (Every time I restart my phone it works for like a minute.)
BUT, I think I came across something. I compared my settings to a friend's, and his phone showed a different IP address. I'm still not sure if it was the IP to his phone, or to the school. How do I find out which IP is which?
Can anyone explain why it works for a minute or two and then stops?
Have you tried going to: Settings->wifi->advanced (you get to advanced by clicking the menu button) to make sure that:
Keep wifi on during sleep: ALWAYS
Avoid poor connections: UNCHECKED
Frequency band: AUTO
Wifi Region: United States
You may want to uncheck wifi optimization.
Oh, one other thing: you aren't using any battery optimization apps are you? JuiceDefender etc? If so, follow their instructions for uninstalling and uninstall!
Beyond that, I haven't got a clue. And no, your IP address has nothing to do with it. It should be different from your friend's.

i'll appreciate your response.
Was out earlier today, all Was fine with my phone, and never had an issue before. Then next thing I know I take my phone out of my Pocket and everything is in chinese, and apps gone, same widget setup as it came from the factory. I tried rebooting and changing the language to english. Also noticed that terms/privacy policy Was not already checked as usual (I got the phone from Taiwan a few months back and havent put a sim in it yet, just using on wifi, so it asks me for language/terms every time I reboot, but it has never been a problem in the past)
Everything is gone now, pics, videos, apps, and all data, even files I saved in folders I created myself in internal storage. I dont think I could havent "butt dialed" that sequence of commnds, especially since you have to select an extra setting if you want internal storage to be wiped during factory reset (I think). Possible but not likely...anyone else seen this? And more importantly is there anything I can do to get my data back?? I lost all pics from the vacation we're on and a ton of pics of my kids and family... I'm hoping its just some profile switch function IM not aware of, but I doubt it since storage space is all free now
One other interesting thing, google loaded and havent searc results in chinese, even after I selected English. phone UI did change successfully, but for same reason google still thinks I want chinese.
That doesnt sound normal

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. Outside of the initial investigation, I pretty much stopped using the phone altogether and shut it off. I'm still on vacation so I haven't tried any recovery apps yet. My phone is not rooted currently, does anyone have any recommendations on the best recovery tool to use in that case? The first one I checked out was Dr. Fone, as well as an app based tool, but that one required root access. I'm hoping the most effective tools don't require root, as I don't want to mess up my chances of getting my data back during the rooting process.
As long as your computer recognises it you can use any recovery tool that supports flash memory via your pc

Ah that's good to know, thanks. I tried using a few android specific ones last night. Dr Fone connected to my phone and started installing drivers I think, then just crapped out. The other one (Tenoshare i think) made it all the way to scanning (it said it didn't recognize my phone model, but let me continue anyeway), but the process hung during the scan. When I restarted it, it told me I needed to root my phone, which is weird since it let me scan before...
I'll keep digging around, hope I can find something that works!
EDIT:
Finally decided to root it since I was having no luck, and that did help for a few of the apps. Unfortunately it seems the only recoverable data is the stuff I had already backed up to the card. No photos or videos taken after that come up, which also seems very strange to me... I have no idea what happened, one minute everything was normal, the next it was like I just picked it up fresh out of the box : /
