Hi guys iv been a long time lurker on this forum using it to gather information about rooting different phones and such,
I'm currently in the market place for a new tablet its going to be android as im so used to the OS for everyday use, but what i realy want is the ability to duel boot it with a linux OS, ether debian of ubuntu, i'm not new to installing roms or rooting but normally i buy first then find out what i can play with after, but this time round i want to buy the technology to meet my needs.
basicaly what im asking is what tablets do you have and what linux are you running also how does it run ? is it smooth or very slow ? does the wifi, bluetooth, and usb slots work ok ?what in you opinion is the best 10 inch tablet out there for me to run a linux os on ?
i whant to spend around £250 on the tablet but cheaper is always better providing it still does the job, for example i saw an archos g9 101 turbo at HMV for 150 quid and for the spec that seems very cheap, iv read on hear about people running ubuintu on this tablet, anyone got any comments about it.
i know theres a lot of questions but if anyone has any info or links they would like to share with me feel free
Cheers Guys

Hi, I've been thinking about buying a budget Android tablet for a while, but mixed reviews of things like the AndyPad put me off. I now have the opportunity to pick up a used Archos 101 Internet Tablet for about £100 (so inside budget territory) but I can't figure out whether this is a gen8 or gen9 device. I think it's a gen8 as it originally came with FroYo and the screen resolution is only 1024x600, but could just do with someone who knows more about them confirming that, I'm wondering what the chances are of a newer OS coming out for this device.
Even if it's the older gen8 version, is it worth a go for £100 anyway and just put a third-party ROM onto it to get the features I want? Cheers!

this would be the Gen8 tablet, there is very little chance of a newer OS coming to it officially but there are a few projects including getting gingerbread running and also a few people are trying to get ICS to boot
Thanks for confirming that, I've been reading up this morning and it seems like while they were a good purchase a while back, I might be better off with something slightly better specced (more RAM) and with a bit more support. Now tempted by an Advent Vega which is also for sale locally, a little bit more money but better specifications and they already have a working (very well, from what I can gather) Honeycomb port, with ICS well on the way. Thanks for your response though
I think is better buy the g9 .. it's new, use honeycomb and not froyo like the g8 and... Archos have say that upgrade the g9 to ics!
Hi everyone !
I've got few question about the lapdock for the Atrix. Especially the OS that we could put on the Atrix for use with it, can we put any ubuntu or linux versions on it ? Is it difficult tu adapt a linux distro on it ? And have we all functionnality as a netbook ? (Like for exemple download library to program some kind of application (In java/PHP/C....) I'm a computer scientist student so it could be interesting for me to have a computer with a 11.6 inch display, an autonomy of 8 hours and a little weight...
Thanks for your answers
And happy new year !!
there is a hack to do this in ATRIX ROM DEVELOPMENT section. you can try and do a search there.
I'd try posting this is questions section, more people will properly see and be able to help you out

So after spending the last Month on my Lapdock, trying every combination I could, I settled on using WebTop2sd. It takes the Webtop and copies it to the External Sdcard and allows you to create whatever partition size you have room for. This only uses the Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04) Distribution that comes with the webtop. Jaunty has been deprecated and no longer has any updates coming from from Canonical. I looked at some of the other ways of changing to newer version of Ubuntu and Debian, but did not find anything that I thought was usable at this point. Or at least as usable as Webtop2sd. So even thought it is an older Distribution, I find it very usable and extemely fast to be running off of a MicroSD card. The latest Webtop (2.3.6) has Firefox 8 which is fast and you can use most all of the normal addons with it. I have the full Open Office 3 package running on mine along with XFCE-4. So right now, you would need to see if what apps you need as a Computer Scientist are available on Jaunty Armel (Have to be made to run on the Arm processor, cannot be X86 or X64) There is a lot of information on the webtop in the Development thread, so just read up on it there. I am a Sales Engineer and I travel quite a bit. I got this for that purpose, it gives me a decent size screen that I have fast web access anywhere, I can work on Docs anywhere, I have movies, music and Books (Firefox ePubReader addon) with me to pass the time. For that it is it works really well. It is not a full on linux laptop though. It has its limitations, but works very well despite of those. Just my opinion.
I think of it more along the lines of a netbook in terms of performance.
Hi i've seen the jetson tk1 a k1 processor development board, now i know it runs linux fine but i want it for android gaming. So i am wondering if anyone own one and/or can tell me should i buy it for the sole purpose of android os gaming,i am concerned of shelling out 200 pounds for a device i may never be able to run android os on.I can't help but think there's a catch like a lack of a chip or something potentialy hindering the chances of loading an android rom on it.I'm debating getting it next fortnights time if anyone thinks it can be and definately will be done i'm sold.

Yes, modifying the linux kernel for ubuntu to run android was quite easy, took less than an hour...
Rootfs was even easier, took 15 minutes....
booted first try...
But getting Cuda in android will have to wait for official Nvidia support.

Hi, im also interested in Android for Jetson TK1 (I already ordered one, I like Ubuntu very much but it doesnt have many games compatible with ARM). If I understood well, you have booted Android on it? You can post it maybe on Nvidia developer forums dedicated for jtk1 or make thread here on xda? Thanks

There is a noob guide on xda featuring instructions for building your first android ROM. That however doesnt mean Jetson TK1 could bave Android ROM from that guide

Hey XDA! This is my first post so bear with me...
Recently Acer announced their new Tegra K1 Chromebook and I have to say it's pretty intriguing. I really want to buy one, my only problem being Chrome OS. Don't get me wrong, I love it, it's just not robust enough for me. I want to really make use of the K1 by playing more high end games like ones for Android that are more optimized for it. Touchscreen not being a huge issue here. I'd use a PS3 controller of course. Plus with all the apps already developed for the Droid platform it makes a lot more sense than web based Chrome OS.
So, question time.....
Do you think it would be possible to install KitKat or maybe even Android L Beta on a system like this? I have researched it a little and the Tegra uses ARMv7 architecture. I don't know a whole lot about what that means, but as far as I understand it's 64-bit not 32. Does that mean I would have to use a special KitKat OS on this? Also how in the world would I go about doing this? I have successfully installed Ubuntu (I think 12.04) on an older Samsung Chromebook which dual boots both Ubuntu and Chrome OS; however, I am not sure that the steps involved would be the same. Seeing as how this is a fairly new device, Google is of no help whatsoever....
EXTRA, EXTRA!
Would it be possible to make Android the default OS so it auto boots without going to the OS verification screen?
Thanks for reading! Really hope I can get some answers, looking forward to doing some "real" gaming on the cheap!
Hi,
my mom won a crazy 55" Panasonic TV, one of the brand new models running on Firefox OS. Not bad , since she needed a new one anyway. But I want to bring this thing to the internet now, I'm always scared of stuff I can't control so the question is simple: Are there chances to get root access or at least a way to install apps running as root or whatever? Or forget about it and buy a Android Settop Box? I mean I'm interested in this new thing from Mozilla, looks promisiong and runs very smooth, stable and all that from what I can tell at this point although it doesn't seem to have a shell but Android is so damn easy, mouse and keyboard are no problem (and would cost a few bucks to get it in this case, too but that's not the problem).
OK, not rootable in terms of getting SU like access the way it works on other platforms but a very open platform, that allows a lot by default (don't know if I failed because of permissions or stuff I tried isn't possible at all...I mean it's a TV...) if you're interested read on here:
How to create and setup your Development Environment
How to connect to your TV with Mozialls WebIDE
Not sure if it's step forward until now but it's a damn interesting new toy to play around with.
