For Stability I recommend Skyraider(Sense 2.1/3.0 hybrid) or if you prefer AOSP go with Thundershed.

Sorry for the late reply. These are both Gb. If you want stable, fray from ICS for now. The leak we have has bad battery issues, and people are having hit or miss experiences with AOSP.

awesome thanks a lot i appreciate the responses. I definitely need my battery to last at least 10-12 hours.. i bought a extended 3500 mhz on ebay for cheap so hoping that will do the trick.. no luck on those ICS roms unfortunately.. loved the look and the way they run just not cutting it with 6-8 hours on extended

any suggestions on kernels or just stick with the baked in ones?.. i installed thundershed this morning to give it a shot

I always used tiamats kernel with aosp ROMs running gingerbread. It gets good battery life and is responsive and doesn't mess up music quality.

thanks so much for the quick responses guys.. could you possibly point me in the direction of these radios? and are they flashable?
my current baseband (i believe this is the radio??) says 2.00.00.0308r, 0.02.00.03212r ... not sure what that means lol
Thanks and sorry for all the questions!

You'll find the latest .9 radio in this thread (found in the Thunderbolt Android Development topic):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048128&page=20
And radios are flashed via the bootloader (when you reboot in recovery you will see an option called "Bootloader". Select that one. It will take you into a pretty crude-looking program that requires the use of the volume up and down toggle to go up and down in the menu and the Power button as the "enter" key. Download the desired radio(s) and save them to the root directory of your phone's SD card. Rename the file pg05img.zip. Note, it has to be exactly that file name, as the Bootloader looks for that file to flash. Choose Bootloader, then hit the Power button. The screen will ask you whether you want to update your radio? Hit the Power button to choose "yes". The screen will tell you to not do anything while its updating your radio. It will take a few minutes, and then when its complete it will prompt you to reboot the phone (by hitting the Power button).
Once the phone has rebooted and you have given it a few minutes to settle in, it is important to either delete the new pg05img.zip file, or at least rename it or move it off the SD root directory (else when you go back into the bootloader you will create a bootloop or other problems.
btw, hopefully you have already changed over to a free app called 4EXT (found on the Play Store) which you should be using for making backups (Nandroids) as well as flashing ROMs and kernels (not radios, as described above). Very user-friendly way of managing your phone flashing (touch screen, very good UI).
If for what ever reason you have any problems flashing the radio, you can always use a micro SD card reader to move, delete, rename, and/or copy new radios onto the SD card root directory. Any place that sells computers will have one for less than $10. Just in case...
Hope this helps and good luck.

Sorry to butt in but I have a question. When I put a new pmg file on the root and boot into revolutionary. It automatically finds the pmg and tells me to press vol up to start the install, or down to not do it. First time I ever tried this I was installing radios for santods nusense. His provided instructions were lacking so I found a sticky here on xda that said how to do it along with a bunch of other things. Those instructions are more like yours, I was very surprised and nervous when the process didn't work as it said and it autodetected that file. So question is...what am I missing?
Edit: sorry let me be more specific. I hold the volume down button when i turn the phone on, up pops he revo screen, up pops a prompt to press vol up to install the new radio. I never have to "choose bootloader", it asks about the radios as soon as revolutionary is on the screen.

I believe everything you have described is normal. There are two ways to boot into the Recovery bootloader... one is by choosing it from the Reboot menu in the ROM, the other is by holding down the Volume Down button then hitting Power (this way allows you to go right into the Bootloader when you are not able to get into your ROM). Then when you choose Bootloader from the list (it may be selection already highlighted) and pressing Power to select (as directed on the screen) it should automatically see your new radio on the SD card root directory. It will prompt you to confirm you want to update the radio (I think by hitting Volume Up to begin the install).
Hope this helps.

No prob, my pleasure. Folks on this and other bulletin boards have always been very helpful to me, so I am hopeful that I can pay forward the favors. Glad everything is working well with the new radio and enjoy Thundershed.

I'm really leaning to T-shed but what are the biggest differences between Aosp and Sense?

Trackball

So my Trackball doesn't wanna scroll left or down, this presents a rather annoying problem when trying to flash new ROMs, anyone know whether or not this is q software / hardware bug or if there's a way around it for flashing until I can get to a Verizon store?

There is a version of Amon's Recovery (created by Scary Alien) that allows you to use keys rather than the trackball for all functions. See this thread for more details and install instructions: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...2-custom-recovery-trackball-not-required.html
If you want to unroot when you bring it to Verizon, you can install the Flashback21 ROM in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=792026
I'd flash the one without the radio myself.

By the way, the trackball-optional recovery image is available over here at XDA in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9124095&postcount=83, but I posted various installation methods and other files over on the AF link that doogald provided.

Oh, also you can try to clean the trackball by rolling it around on a blank white piece of printer paper. Lay the paper on a table and roll the trackball around on the paper. If it is a speck of dirt that is causing the trackball not to scroll in those two directions, it may clean it.
It sounds strange, and I have never needed to do this with my Eris, but I can verify that it works with the (improperly named) Apple MightyMouse.

I think I remember reading part of that thread way back when, but I never saw the images of the Blackberry trackball that someone posted. That's pretty cool...didn't know that's how the trackball worked.
Cheers!
Plugged in my charger and jiggled it.worked like a charm, back to froyo and waiting on a less bugged kgb to emerge.thanks for all the suggestions

Droid X2 Bootstrap with Chinese ROM Update Zip

System Recovery to requires you to have a WALL CHARGER being plugged into the computer will not work
www.bandbinnovations.com/xda/DX2/Bootstrap_signed.apk
This is a chinese update.zip I would not flash it unless you know chinese but it gives devs a good base and gives us a good start as we dont have to worry about signing the updates now
www.bandbinnovations.com/xda/DX2/update_signed.zip
Great news
Its still a lil too advanced for me to use yet, but the ball is rolling fast now. Has there been any word on the potential stable speed of the tegra when overclocked. My incredible was never stable beyond stock.
I did it it, and it was way easier than I thought it was going to be. Not going to bother with the chinese rom though. I haven't heard anyone say it was any better than stock, so why bother.

Eh, not rolling tooo fast, its rolling the same its been for the past week, people are just over hyping everything TOO MUCH, and that rom is practically an update.zip but Chinese (from what i gathered i may be wrong)
Im thinking of trying the chinese rom this weekend to see if I can muddle though the settings and change it to english. I dont read or speak, much less write, chinese. If anybody can tell me that this can or cant be done, let me know before I spend to much time on it... Please....

I got curious and decided to start looking at the files in the zip (one-by-one). So far, each file that I have opened is in English. Since the SBF does work, I'm wondering what would it hurt to at least give it a try and if it all comes up in Mandarin, then I can simply clean everything off and go back to how things were before. I'm not a dev, and I don't pretend like I could be one or know what I'm doing. I know how to flash, sbf and most importantly - ask for help when there's something I don't understand. I haven't seen anything (in the files I've viewed so far) that would lead me to believe that this is anything other than a normal ROM that the Chinese just happen to have.
If anyone else has any thoughts on this matter, please share. My curiosity may just be in overdrive and i've been hungering so long for a ROM that this might just be desperation and a case of huberus of the worst magnitude. I welcome all learned comments/suggestions on the matter.
Thanks in advance family.
If you erase data prior to flashing the rom, when you reboot, it will be at the initial android activation screen. It will be in chinese, but you can simply click the icon in the bottom right hand corner and change to english. Only problems I've ran into so far using this method is that the paid is that paid market doesn't seem to work. But with the new market available, you may just be able to install it over top and bring back full functionality.
Once I return home im going to make an all night attempt st conjuring something up based on this rom, I'll post it if I accomplish anything.

Now that is some MAJOR information that I needed to know. Thank you so very much. I will most definitely be trying this tonight when I get home from work. I feel like a kid with a new toy....is that bad? Oh well, can't help myself. Have to tinker. It will be interesting to see what happens during the next step of the test - seeing if it has the same problems as the stock version (rebooting when it wants to, powering itself off while in the charging dock, etc.) We won't even discuss Quadrant speeds or overclocking yet. I think that's the stuff I will leave to you experts. I'm a major novice who is a pseudo adrenaline junkie when it comes to my phone. I'm like Tim Allen wanting it to have "more power, grunt grunt'.
I'll stop being silly now and rather I will thank you again for the heads-up...it is greatly appreciated.
This is exactly the info I was looking for. I am not a dev either. I just know enough to get myself in trouble and then get out of it, most of the time..... I do believe we can just replace the market and if that is so that will be awesome. the next thing we are going to have to figure out is if and how we remove the chinese bloat.
About the issues affecting the stock ROM we have at the moment, from my understanding, the chinese one is basically the same. So the same issues may still exist...
I will attempt this tonight after work and a backup so that I can wipe and sbf to start from scratch...
Its great to see interest and attempts at advancing our current state of affairs, even if the progress is minimal. Progress is PROGRESS people!!!!
TIA
So I just flashed the Chinese ROM.... I did what c21johnson said and switched it to English using the bottom right hand button... After that its pretty much the same as usual, log in, configure VZW and Google access and then you get to the default moto blur crap that came with the phone... Some bloat has been removed, but again as has been stated previously some has been added... Two apps that are in Chinese that cant be uninstalled... Aside from that its all the same... I am restoring back to the backup I did before flashing the Chinese ROM as it is absolutely nothing special.....
Has anyone tried to overclock the chinese room? I heard its the same as original rom, but since its a custom kernal, it might be able to be overclocked.

Does it really have a custom kernel?
If it does then we should be mining Chinese forums to figure out how because someone would have had to sign it with our locked bootloader. I bet its stock.

This works great!
I've even recovered from a brick using the SBF and a nandroid recovery from the System Recovery on this. So when are we going to start seeing some ROMs?
Has anyone been successful in using this on a Motorola Milestone X2? I created this thread and skwoodwiva was extremely helpful in trying to help me out but it seems I still can't figure out what I might be doing wrong:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20295079#
Umm, someone needs to explain more about this. It doesn't seem to be anything that isn't already out for us, just it's in Chinese. I see no reason to use this or even have it posted here at all unless you can unlock the bootloader...has anyone tried that yet? I won't hold my breath on this btw.
I fail to see how this is different...our current recovery requires being plugged into a wall, why use this instead?
An oldie but goodie thread This is where our bootstrap came from...
That makes much more sense...I didn't look at the thread date, thanks mastafunk
New way to use this apk
Many thanks to Tenfar for the apk. This is the same but it is not installed form your file manager it is flashed with recovery mode already enabled.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426062
It writes to /preinstall , /system/bin and /data (just as the recovery mode-ON apk does) BUT NOT to /data/data (as the apk relies on). Also charge mode is not available as it needs to be recovery enabled in order to save "you" on a bad rom flash or data data wipe.
Why use it? You may ask:
With this you can now safely do a data wipe and still reboot into cwr by just flashing this as the last step before "reboot system now" it will save you from SBFing if anything keeps you from booting.
System Recovery to requires you to have a WALL CHARGER being plugged into the computer will not work

Okay, a few noob questions rolled into one thread

All right, so I just my Thunderbolt a couple days ago, rooted it, first time truly rooting a phone, used Revolutionary. Now for my noob questions.
Will saving apps to my SD card keep them on the phone after installing a new ROM?
I tried installing a BAMF ROM with Sense 3.0, it was laggy and I couldn't access the market, said I needed background data. ROM said it required a MR2 or above radio, I don't know if I have that or not, I'm guessing not since I couldn't access the market. Is there a way to check which radio I'm using?
I'm using the free version of juiceDefender, are there any noticable perks to upgrading to a paid version?
One last question, is there a good calendar app that will have a useful agenda widget (similar to BlackBerry's today feature)?
I'd like to learn what I can as fast as I can and stop being a noob ha ha. I ask about the paid apps 'cause I'd want to buy setCPU and really ramp up my speed. I'm using a free app right now and getting 1.2GHz, but I want 1.4GHz speed.
Okay, I lied, this is the final question, can someone link me to a good easy to understand noob rooting thread that can really help me understand more perks and good to do things with rooted phones?
Thanks in advance, any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Background data error should only be happening because you don't have wifi or 4g/3g on,so turn on either. Then go to market it would ask you to enable background data if it off
As for checking the radio not sure.
But on the benefits of root, in my experience is unlimited I have also just go a tbolt couple weeks ago and I have been switching roms and kernels left and right to find the right one to fit my needs. And it's really better because you can customize your phone to something you like.
My tip is to read the sticky threads in the general section and q&a.

Compare to the radios here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048128&highlight=radio
If its not a radio in the Gingerbread section, download BOTH radios, rename one to PG05IMG.ZIP and place on the root of the sd card, boot into hboot and let it update. After its updated and booted, delete that file from the root, rename the other and place on the root. Boot into hboot and update that radio. Doesn't matter the order. You can find a zip with both radios in one, i'm just lazy and did a quick search to find you that one.
As far as overclocking, look into custom kernals that support higher overclocking and the speedtweak.sh script is nice. I use IMO's kernals, then go into any terminal emulator on the phone (download from market), type su, hit enter, then speedtweak.sh, hit enter. Gives you some options. Also nandroid your phone before messing with overclocking speeds incase you set to a speed you're phone can't use. You can screw your phone up overclocking, be careful.
Custom kernels can be found in a sticky on the development page. If you started with the latest GB update, then you have the latest radios. For apps, use titanium backup from the market. It saves all apps and their data for you.

Good luck. Post back results or if you have any problems. And always always always back up current ROM and do a full wipe when flashing anything new (mod,ROM, kernel, radio) to your phone.

Don't not do a full wipe when flashing a kernel you are going to confuse him, if anything needs to be wiped just dalvik cache.
No wipe needed to flash a radio just do it.
Depending on the mod and what it changes just dalvik and clearing normal cache never hurts.

Okay, so I did notice one thing, I installed the Eternity Nightly theme, which I love, but I had to restore back to stock because when I used Titanium Backup to restore apps+data, it reset all my settings back to stock anyway and I really want to use the theme that comes stock with Eternity Nightly. Did I do something wrong?
when you do the restore on Ti, select only the apps you need, not all. Sounds like you restored some system files too that reset your theme.
I was attemting to try again, but there was an issue backing up the boot image. Is there a way to fix that?
Where are you backing up? I'm assuming through CWM? If it failed to back up, boot your phone up, download rom manager if you don't have it, and have it flash CWM recovery again. Then try to back it up again.
Yes, CWM, I have ROM Manager, I tried flashing recovery and attempting again twice, same issue, can't backup the boot image.
Figured it out, there wasn't enough space on my SD card for the backup, I found out when I tried to record a voice note and it said I didn't have enough space to record. I was using an 8GB card, but I think I'll have to switch to the 32GB. I was using sav ming the 32GB for a new mp3 player but a rooted phone could use it better I think.
So, I know what a sense ROM is, but what are the differences between and sense ROM and an ASOP ROM?
And what are the advantages of flashing different kernels?

AOSP = Android open source project. So Sense ROMs are based soley on HTC phones. AOSP is a more general Android OS. If you're running a Sense based ROM, you use a kernel for that specific style. Generally, using a kernel for one ROM on the other style ROM will most likely cause problems...

Okay, new one, I'm running BAMF Cubed 1.0.9 with the Red Hot theme for it and an Imosogen kernel, not sure if the theme or kernel matter. The only question I have with it, is how do I get FriendStream to work? I use FriendStream all the time (until I get to alpha test Social Scope), so any help is greatly appreciated. I hate the stock FB app/site, the news feed is crap now.

Hey id thought I just throw a couple questions in here since a new thread isnt necessarily needed.
I Just Picked up this phone, root is done, just wondering if anyone can tell me the best radio/kernel setup that works great with MIUI & 4G is stable?

[Q] Rooted Phase 2...a.k.a. What's Next?

I am living with what I'll refer to as a successfully rooted NT...
Got 9.9.9 showing
installing a lot of apps - most work, some don't but that's due to no camera, bluetooth, etc. that I discover later
Now, as crazy as this may seem, I'm sure there are some of us out there who want to get our NT's as fully "droided up" as possible, and then, lo and behold, leave it alone. Just enjoy it (with all due credit to the devs who have made it possible!).
So, for the rest of us, can someone offer a "checklist" of any outstanding mods that should be done? I am not out here too much but what about this CM7 and/or CM9 I hear about? Will this represent the final frontier?
My goal in asking this question is to understand when I've reached a point where I no longer feel compelled to fiddle with my device, but also feel I've advanced it as far as technologically and functionally possible
once we get a fully working cm7 and cm9, the NT will essentially be a full android tablet.
cm9 is ice cream sandwich(android 4), cm7 is gingerbread(android 2.3)
final frontier? maybe but right now both are in alpha stage development -and it has come really far in the past 2 weeks since the bootloader was cracked/hacked/bypassed
Great! Now, the question becomes, will it be necessary to install CM7 to get to CM9, or will it be possible to go right to CM9 (which I am assuming is the better of the two choices).

When it's done. the main holdup on cm9 from reading the dev section is- sleep of death other than that essentially everything else works i believe. personally my guess is probably next week for an alpha release, but that is completely upto the people working on it.
no hardware video acceleration yet.
cm7 main holdup is wifi and sleep of death- again they fix those two items and -again- probably next week depending
Forgive my ignorance, but what is "sleep of death?" unless by that you mean bricking it. What would be the reason to go with CM7 if CM9 is apparently a more advanced version of android and is on a parallel development track?

1 Sleep of death is basically the inability to wake the nook from sleep mode. On stock nooks and working android devices the power button usually puts it to sleep. Right now CM on the nook puts it to sleep without allowing it to wake. It doesn't brick the device but it requires you to hard reset/reboot the device to make it usable again. When I say "hard reset," I mean in the traditional sense (holding a button sequence or cutting off power to FORCE a restart the device). I do NOT mean a "factory reset" that erases everything.
2 CM7 is already fully developed and released on other devices. In theory it should be far more stable and reliable than CM9, which is bleeding edge and unfinished in general. In other words, CM9 is practically guaranteed to have more bugs since it's got so much new stuff in it.

cm9 is a different kernel then cm7. What this means is not all apps will work on cm9. cm7 in theory should have better app compatibility, but cm9 should be better optimized for the NT.
As for sleep of death, I am pretty certain what it is, is every time the tablet goes to sleep. it dies.... why by now they have probably buried dozens of poor helpless NTs who never got a proper chance at life.... all in the name of progress. (ok sarcasm aside, SOD is simply you can't bring it back out of sleep. while I suppose you could simply disable sleep mode, doing so would badly hurt battery life, Also I believe they are trying to get bluetooth up and running as well for cm9)
So I hear you say cm7 = better app compatibility and cm9 = better optimized for the NT. In honor of super bowl season, sounds a bit like "great taste, less filling."
In other words, which would be the better choice between the two (assuming bugs have been worked out and both are stable)?
personal preference?
honestly, it'll be whichever you like best, with the way they have it setup to bypass the bootload in the nook tablet, you should be able to flash Either with the press of a button or two, try one for a week, try the other for a week, then decide which you like best.
you do have to remember cm7 is more for phones, which cm9 is more for tablets....
I agree with lenardo. The better of the two is the one that meets your needs. That said, I am more looking forward to CM9. I installed it on my phone a month ago and love it. It feels so much more polished. Not that I had any issues with CM7, but it just feels like "this is what Android should be." But beware ... once you start flashing and modding, it's quite addictive.

I assume there will be some big announcement and posting along with step by step installation instructions?

announcement is likely, step by step instructions will most likely involve using cwm to install. So if you haven't already installed it, install cwm now so you will be ready
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458630
as for cm9 vs cm7 as the others have stated most people are waiting for cm9. I will most certainly give both a try. unless there is an app that I can't live without that just won't run on cm9, I will probably be using it. If I find I can't use certain apps with cm9, then I will be moving to cm7. However I will give both a try. there is little point in making a decision with only looking at one side of the choice.

Yes. to explain what the recovery flasher app does. it installs clockworkmod (cwm) or the nook stock recovery. the stock recovery is what you would use to fix your nook if you really screw it up somehow. you can access it by holding the power and nook buttons at the same time while booting up. (i.e. the power is off, turn it on with both the n button and the power button, holding them until it gives you the option to restore stock firmware).
Clockwork mod would replace this. If you use the recovery flasher to flash cwm, then instead of the option to reset the device to factory settings, holding the power button + n button on bootup will get you into the CWM menu. cmw can be used for several things. It can backup your firmware so you can restore things if you screw up. (i.e. backup your rooted firmware, so resetting isn't unrooting anymore) or it can flash zip files to modify your existing firmware. you would be using the flash zip files function to flash the cm9 or cm7 firmware once they are done.
There isn't much atm that you can do with cwm other then backup your current firmware in case you screw something up, however I would suggest doing so. it's always good to have an easy way to fix things if you screw it up somehow playing around makes it easy.
The flasher apk will also allow you to flash back to the default barnes and noble recovery if you wanted to get rid of cwm for some reason I can't think of.
EDIT: you can also download "Quickboot" from the google market to get to the recovery menu without rebooting and holding the n button + power button.
Also useful to know. controls in CWM: + and - buttons will move between options. n button will select whatever you are on, and the back button is the power button.
To piggyback on the reply above there really isn't any need for quick boot as Indirect's App ALSO allows to "reboot recovery" from within the app.
As the system would need to be running in order you use this, there really isn't any need for both app's strictly to get to recovery.
The advantage of Quick Boot is that it also offers you the option to "reboot" the device which I believe is currently only possible by turning it off and then back on. Not a big deal but it will save an extra step.
The disadvantage of Quick Boot is that it will also provide you with the option to boot into the bootloader. DON"T click that.

ok ill run my problem in this thread too, maybe i can get this working. i posted this question/problem in another thread too and i dont know how to reference via link to other thread thru my SGP so forgive me for double posting.
this is what i did, i downloaded dd_03052012.zip from entropy. unzipped it in winrar. then when i tried adding the tar to pda section of odin, it wasn't there (but if i were to open its folder thru win explorer then i would see it) just odin wasn't recognizing it. so i renamed the zimage file with .tar at the end, now odin sees it so i go ahead and add it into pda field and push start (player was in download mode) odin said reset....then after a couple secs it said passed! and then it reboot itself...still stock kernal. please help, I've literally been working on this for twelve hours with a break to go grocery shopping thanks in advance.
(all im trying to accomplish right now is gettin cwm)

How to flash .zip releases:
Put it on your sdcard, enter CWM, flash the .zip using CWM
If you do not have CWM, install an older .tar release then flash, or follow the "Any rooted device" instructions above, but extract the zImage from the .zip instead of a .tar

1 .Go to the OP (Original Post) of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445840&highlight=entropy512
2. Download this kernel:
DD_01142012.tarThen, place it on the desktop directory, or an otherwise easily accessible directory, on your computer.
Do not attempt to unzip it or manipulate it in any way!
3. Run ODIN.
4. Now, put your SGP into download mode by holding the volume down + power button until your device turns back on with a yellow construction-like sign.
5. Insert USB cable now, and ensure that ODIN has recognized the device by looking to see if a device is registered in the ID:COM field.
You should see something like this: 0:[COM11]
Now, you're ready to flash the kernel!
6. In the ODIN interface, press the PDA button and navigate to the directory where you saved the kernel you downloaded and double-click to open.
7. Now press START and wait about 20 ~ 30 seconds to finish the flash.
As this is but a kernel, and not a ROM, the flash time will be short!
8. ODIN WILL REBOOT YOUR DEVICE FOR YOU!
9. Now you should have entropy512's kernel on your device.
Good Luck!:good:
P.S. - Once you've flashed the original .tar file, you should have CWM active on your device. From this point forward, you should put entropy512's kernel updates on your SD Card and flash them from CWM and NOT ODIN!
You have to flash the CWM.tar in Odin PRIOR to even TRYING to install the kernel.
Once you have CWM, place the dd_1234567etc.zip AS IS in the root of ext sdcard.
Flash .zip in CWM.
Done.

dude..i LOVE u!! thank u sooo friggin much ur help. i actually did all of that exactly last night but to no avail. but what you did to help me was when you said something like 'download the tar and dont unzip it or manipulate it in any way'...i never unzipped it before either but when i downloaded it, winrar would automatically turn it into a 'winrar' file. so in a sense, my computer was "manipulating" it, so i uninstalled winrar (7zip is better anyways) and voila, everythings kosher. thanks dude. i wouldve never have thought of that if it wasnt for that one piece of instruction.
so i have done entropys updates yet, but when i powered it off to try out cwm (it was still plugged into cpu) it powered off and kept re-cycling the powering off action, until i disconnected it from cpu and everything was fine. i wonder if thats normal. anyhow, i trust the rest of my tinkering will fruitfull...thanks again bro.

What you mentioned is a known bug. It is kernel related. You cannot charge via USB plugged into a computer. Although, can charge via USB plugged into a wall.
In order to get to CWM mode (aka recovery mode) follow these steps:
1. Press and hold Power + Volume UP
2. The device will reboot and you'll see the Samsung logo. Don't let go yet!
3. The device will reboot once again. When you see the Samsung logo, let go of only the power button.
4. You should now be in recovery mode.
This is how I do it on my SGP 5.0 Korean model. The USA model may be different, and you may be able to skip STEP 3.
Ok sweet...well ive literally been playin around with this player since we spoke last. Im makin it tailored to my liking, however, theres one big and one small problem im having. The small one which isnt really anything is that when the players off and i plug it into wall charger the battery screen pops up but it doesnt display any juice in it - so im not even sure its charging in off mode, but it charges while its on no problem. Big problem is that when i have my earplugs plugged in, the player randomly owers the volume all the way to mute by itself and after i raise vol again it lowers it back down. But once i unplug earphones then the vol behaves again. I dont think its the earphones cuz theyre bose and i doubt they would make a faulty product (although its possible i suppose). Other than those two problems, everythings perfect. Any ideas? Tried doing a search on volume bug to no avail. Thanks!

A couple of questions:
1. What ROM are you using? *
2. What app are you using to listen to music? **
*The reason I ask is because the charging issue could be a ROM issue. I am running Supermaster34's CM9 build on my SGP 5.0 Korean model and if I charge my device while powered off I can see the juice registering in the battery. It could also be a kernel issue. Since I have a Korean model, I use an entirely different kernel, which could provide an entirely different outcome.
**As for the volume issue, I thought that it could be software related. Be sure there is not a automatic volume minimizer setting within the app itself. It could also be kernel or ROM related.
I am not an expert on kernel or ROM issues, but there are definitely people in this forum that could give you a proper developer's response. But, go ahead and answer those questions and I'll see what I can help you with.

If you're not too adamant about using the camera on your device, I'd say Supermaster34's CM9 build is a great way to go. He even put together a Bluetooth patch, so really the only things that aren't working on CM9 for the SGP 5.0 are the camera and hardware acceleration.
Like I mentioned earlier, that's the ROM I use, and I don't have any volume or RAM issues. In most instances, CM9 runs quite smooth for me, except for a couple widgets that really need hardware acceleration to be optimal (and, I stress the word optimal).
Better yet, we have some amazing developers in the SGP forum that are working tirelessly to get CM10 (Jelly Bean) working on our devices, along with a 3.x kernel for hardware acceleration and addressing other bug issues.
Worst case scenario, you could use stock ROM rooted for optimal performance.
Sorry to throw my two cents in but if you want to keep your camera, format the file system to ext4. If your fimilar to quadrent benchmark, this is my score after the ext4 file system tweak. I compared it to my dad's SGP 5 with the same rom and he got under 1300 so this tweak is a must have.

My friend, that's what we all do around here. Flash as many ROMs as you like. Just be sure to always keep a backup in CWM recovery! Also, take care to flash ROMs that are meant for your device. Always read the OP of any ROM's thread to make sure there is no technical detail overlooked.
Be cautious, but have fun.:good:
cool..well im going to tryout supermasters rom right now...wish me luck. and forgive me if this is a dumb question but are all launchers compatible with all roms? or just the launchers that are packaged with it?
