I just want to make sure this is not a problem to downgrade from 4.1.2 ICS to 2.3.7...is it true?
This downgrade wont break anything
Well, you can downgrade from CM09/10 to CM07 or even stock but make sure you downgrade to 4.5.91 / 2.3.x as when motorola updated you to 4.5.91 they changed the boot-loader and if you try to go below that you would brick your phone for sure.
if you need a stock firmware its here --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125944
else browse xda forum and there are many good GB based Roms, but do check whats working section to be sure of what is missing there.

Why would it be a problem?
Are you confusing standard ROM flashing via recovery with flashing via RSD?
i m confusing about downgrade not to use cwm or rsd... downgrade would be make my phone brick( that s why i want to know can i downgrade my phone 4.0.x to orginal factory rom 2.3.5...
and how?

Use CWM or another recovery to flash ROMs. I have switched between Stock GB, CM7 and CM10 multiple times, it doesn't brick the phone. If you installed ICSROM or AtrICS or one of the other leaked ROMs, restoring is best way (provided you did a backup like instructions say).
Instructions (restore):
1) boot into recovery
2) backup/restore
3) restore from external/internal
4) choose last backup, restore and reboot
Instructions:
1) boot into recovery
2) clear data/factory reset
3) wipe dalvik under "advanced"
4) format /system under "mount"
5) choose and flash ROM and gapps

dont know if im just getting confused or if we're on different tracks so im going into depth and just let me know if you were referring to that or not.
in old bootstrap, you had 3 packages from the thread
1) on boot cwm
2) remove cwm
3) cwm with on boot (only to be used when flashing new rom)
in this 1 i can only see
1) touch screen cwm
2) remove cwm (via flashing old bootstrap)
3) (after wipes/formats) wondering what do i need to flash when installing new rom?? old bootstrap cwm with on boot package or just flash this cwm touch package again?
cheers

I currently have stock GB version 2.3.5. I plan to flash CF-Root kernel with ClockworkMod Recovery and flash ICS. If I make backup of my current version will I be able to revert to it once I install ICS? Or will flashing ICS flash a kernel which is incompatible with GB?
Yes if i make a backup of 2.3.5 i can flash a ICS rom and from there even if i flash a custom recovery for ICS i can still restore my 2.3.5 backup its "universal"

So will I need to flash another recovery after flashing ICS or will ClockworkMod Recovery still be there?
Clockworkmod will still be there no matter what 2.3 or 4.0 rom you use just that every rom tend to have their own "themed" version of cwm. but they all still backup and restore the same way. Just a note, for the SII the recovery is part of the boot.img (had to get this in my head the first time as my old phone was different

I'm not 100% sure what that means so do I need to take some extra steps because of it?
Erm if you dont know what it means then its ok (it was meant for those that has prior experince)
Just to add, if you go stock using Odin, cwm won't be there until you flash cfroot or similar.
:highfive:
My friend wants me to flash custom rom to his s2.I have xperia x10 and galaxy nexus with me.Both i have flashed. So i have some experince with flashing but i dont see bottloader unlocking here or one click root ad all so i wanna confirm the steps here beore i do anything stupid
so are these the steps:
1.Root your stock phone with CF-Root 5.6 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
2.Then copy GT-I9100 Resurrection Remix JB v3.1.3 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436854 to the sd card
3.Get into cwm recovery and flash this rom after a clean wipe
4.Flash Dorimanx 7.44 after a reboot
Is this it?

The thing is where you're flashing from.
And yes, only 4.0.4's kernel's dangerous.

If you want to go from stock ICS to stock JB you have no need to root.
All you do is simply reboot into download mode (Power on using Volume Up + Home + Power) then flash the JB md5 file via ODIN.
Once you have flashed the file you may find system wont boot into rom (this is normal). Just reboot into download mode and flash latest version of Siyah kernel (.tar file) which will be Siyah v6 beta4 (or above). This will give you cwm recovery, better battery life, root access, SU etc.
Go and have a look at some topics/search etc, All the info you need is already on here and if you try and take some shortcuts you may run into problems or even possibly brick your device so take some time and learn.
PS. Yes the eMMc brick bug is part of stock 4.0.4 kernel so just dont go into stock recovery. You can also brick device by your flash process getting interrupted so make sure you have drivers installed correctly (install kies) and taht you're not running any other programs while flashing and also that you have at least 55% battery.
It's a very good thing you are reading before getting the bad boy you intend to flash.
See the thing about this bug is when you make a back up, wipe things up from the recovery, and flash via oding. Once you do the wipes, you are kinda screwed.
Now, you got a couple of choices here:
1) Your device arrives with 4.0.4 ICS, flash siyah kernel (I'll get you off the hook).
2) Arrives with 4.0.3, you are good to go, no danger.
3) You can try mobile odin, it flashes with its own kernel and, apart from being fast, it's easy.
4) If you get a gingerbread version, you good as well.
That being said, I'd advice you to play with it for a couple of days instead of flashing right away.
Check out some videos, read something about ExynosAbuse (It'll get you rooted with one click) and revolv around the q&a section looking for "not to do list".
good luck and remember, keep on reading.

Umm, if I'm understanding correctly, you installed the ROM- CM10, that is- and/or kernel via Odin. CM10 and the Mercurius kernel are zip files (.tar, .pit and the like are for Odin, not zips...if I understood correctly).
You want to place the ROM and the GAPPS zips on your actual SD card. Make sure the SD card is working properly. Reset and go to CWM (Power+Vol up).
Then, accd to the instructions on the CM10 page:
"Installation:
Reboot to CWM
Make a Nandroid (optional, but recommended)
Format /system if you had a different GApps package installed
Install ROM
Install GAPPS if you just formatted /system
Wipe data/factory reset if you are coming from Gingerbread
Reboot
??? (wait a while...)
Profit"
I'd say make a backup before doing any of this, but I'm assuming you're beyond that point....But before going on to CM10, it might be a good idea to recover your device first and back it up. Maybe flash a GB rom via CWM or Odin before proceeding to CM10, making a backup just in case...
Ok

would he have to flash the kernel first, though? I'm unfamiliar with rjs, but am assuming that rjs version of CWM would be identical to entropys version of CWM, which means that he could just flash the CM10 ROM since it has the kernel baked in.
When I upgraded from Chip -> CM10, I just flashed via CWM, upgrading both the ROM and CWM in the process.

I remember Dkonzig mentioning this, that the path to JB was through ICS, but for my US device, I just flashed directly to GB. I remember another Int'l GB user who flashed directly to JB and was fine. this is peculiar.
so two methods to choose from, I suppose.
I've tried flashing half a dozen roms on 3 versions of CWM and TWRP, and every attempted zip installation fails. I've done this several times before on other phones; is there some special trick I'm missing on the Fascinate?
We'll need some more info to truly help out.
Dou you have sch-i500 Verizon Fascinate?
What current android version/ROM are you on?
Are you rooted?
Which cwm are you trying?
What ROM are you trying to flash?
Have you followed the " guide" from "droidstyle" posted in the general section?

Yes, it's the sch-i500.
I'm not using the phone right now, but I've been flashing back to this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526488 Eclair. I can't restore from the nandroid backup I made, it fails as well.
I haven't tried flashing Superuser.
Recoveries I've tried are TWRP and 3 CWMs I've found. I just have these in a folder with their default names: cwm_fixed_for_cm7-ODIN.tar, cwm-bml-i500.tar, cwm-recovery-ALL.tar.
I've tried flashing several ROMs, and I've deleted most of them. Right now I'm trying the 7.20 version and CM10 6/18 build from here http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=fascinatemtd, this 5/31 build of AOKP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2185502, and this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1385624.
No, I haven't been following that guide. I've been using Odin to restore back to Eclair, then I flash a recovery, then the ROM. I'll try following that guide when I have time; I've already wasted 6 hours on this.
The guide will give you some missing and critical steps for a generally flawless process to bring you up to a 4.2.x ROM...
Look at section 4
Like making sure to use. pit
'cwm fixed for cm7' is the one to use from stock eclair
Don't forget the gb bootloader file
The biggest thing the guide didn't mention is when in 'cwm fixed for cm7' flashing your news ROM you'll need to flash that ROM 3 times,,, you don't need to wipe everything during those just flash 3 times,,,,
1st time flash, then you do a reboot,,, it will take you into a new updated cwm recovery,,, from there flash ROM again,,, you'll get a warning about partitions with a status error,,, it's normal,,,, go directly back and choose to flash ROM again,,, flash will work and complete process,,, now just flash any needed Google gapps zip file then reboot into your new ROM...

It looks like the problem was that I didn't flash the gingerbread bootloader after I flashed CWM. Isn't the bootloader a part of the Gingerbread restore image I'm using in the guide though? And why don't ROM makers put that in their ROMs if it's required for the ROMs to work?
Anyway, it's working now. Thanks!
