If this is a useless post I'm sorry, I just want to help if at all possible. Long story short I have a Verizon Galaxy Note II that I picked up and some things about it have lead me to believe I am in possession of a test device. I.e. silver markings across the front of it, a serial number, exposed wireless charging leads on the back, and it appearing as a "4g test device" in my account. I already soft bricked the thing once trying to root it. My question is, is there anything on this device that could be helpful to the community? I just wanted to throw it out there before I do anything stupid with this thing. Thanks.
Can you provide pictures of said elements?

Yes I can, as soon as I figure out how to upload.

I do not have a picture of the apps that were running on it as I soft bricked the phone it's running on a different image atm.
The two leads on the back are for wireless charging. The other stuff I don't know about.
You might try getting a hold of someone in the Dev threads as they would be the ones who would need things. I know that AdamOutler has basically unlocked the phone already but I might try to get a hold of him.
Where did you get the device from? All Verizon has the wireless charging set up. But the other things don't know.
Did you get this from Verizon or another actually retailer? Or was this an eBay / Craigslist purchase? Definitely get a hold of Adam though...maybe it has an old version of the OS with an unlocked bootloader

The verizon models do not have the 2 leads for wireless charging, the other models do.
for sure get a hold to the devs dude. you might have a gem there.
Yeah definitely need to get Adam in here. That's a definite unique piece of equipment.
Adam may be interested in that bootloader

Definitely not an normal Note. The menu and back button methods and raised home button intrigue me the most.

Looks like you have an early test device. Odds are though, the good stuff from it won't be able to be dumped without special tools. Also, would you be able to go to Settings > About Phone and find the hardware revision? I'm interested in seeing what revision you have. Definitely a cool purchase though.

If there is even any good stuff.
Didn't VZW say they beta tested this phone a long time ago slightly before the release? My guess it is just one of those. I forgot, but it was posted up pre-release in a long winded post from another forum. Basically said that VZW didn't think N2 would be a big seller and wanted to test it out in the field first/found that more people enjoyed the white version as well.

Being a test device, it could potentially get radios and other ROMs before the release devices, but it sounds like that got wiped out in a failed root attempt. Also, the test device could have a signed and unlocked bootloader, but one probably couldn't dump it from the device for flashing anyway. I'm sure it is an early test device, as there are likely hundreds of other test devices, Note 2 and otherwise, for people to test and use before VZW gives a :good: to sell, or decides to pursue other devices.

I'm trying to decided between the Galaxy Nexus and the Droid 4.
I'm assuming Droid4 and RAZR will have the same exact hardware and therefore be pretty much interchangeable ROM wise. Is this correct?
If that is the case I'm heavily leaning toward the Droid 4 but it depends on 2 things.
1. With the "removable back", the battery being accessible without removing glued on case components(just screws)
2. The developer support for the RAZR/Droid4 being sizable despite the locked bootloader.
Thoughts?
The developer support is still growing and I think we will be satisfied in the end. But is not a nexus though.
There are some things happening already, for example someone have been able too boot ICS.
Also the bootloader will be unlocked when Moto releases ICS.

No, I'm sorry didn't think of Veri.
Moto said that they would unlock the bootloader if the operator is okay with it. So it's up to Verizon, and what I have heard they probably won't allow it.

After doing some brief research on this, I read that the unlock tool that is released with the ICS update abroad will "probably" allow developers to unlock the Verizon RAZR. Is this actually likely?

Likely? Probably not, but it might be possible for a dev to reverse engineer or figure it out...
Lots of IFs, but with Safestrap out now and devs working on roms, after we get FXZ or SBF, we will have a great device with lots of options for ROMs.
1. IIRC, the Droid 4 will also lack a removable battery.
2. ICS might not be released until May or June. By then the Razr will be an "old" phone, so it might not really take off with developers if it does not build momentum in the next 2-3 months while it is still "new."
-but from the looks of it the development of the Razr seems to be really starting to take off.
3. In terms of user base, the one thing that really helped the Razr was the 1 cent Amazon Wireless deal. It was the top phone available on Verizon at the time, so I'm sure that built a good base of users- but maybe not the type of users who develop ROMs.

The Droid 4, there is some question as to whether the phone will have a removable battery or not.
The test units were not sent with the case removal tool that was seen on the spec sheet that was released today.
I haven't seen a new confirmation on the removable battery yet, and Motorola never confirmed anything on this front.

The boatloader won't get unlocked. You'll see a workaround, like a 2nd-init, or something along those lines, but Verizon won't allow unlocked boatloaders, and Motorola is going to comply with Verizon's desire to keep the boatloader in lockdown.
That won't stop development, and ASOP ROM's which is what Droid Th3ory is working on, an ASOP ICS port.
mhhh but the Atrix have unlocked bootloader, why only that moto have that luck?
Atrix is on at&t. The carrier designates whether the boatloader stays locked or not. It isn't moto's decision.

Very good question. Why don't you ask them? It would be interesting to hear their reply.
Well it looks like dev on this phone is dead!
I mean they have already released ICS 4.0.2 for the vzw GN and we ain't got **** yet!!
Looks like I'm going to have give this phone the wifey and go get me a GN.
Don't get me wrong I love the phone but no dev spt is a bummer!
...What are you talking about. The Nexus shipped with ICS in the first place, of course it got it before we did. And it got 4.0.2 update 2 hours later straight from Google. That has nothing to do with Dev support.
And naturally, since it's a Nexus device, it's gonna get ages more dev support than any other phone. But we are getting places ourselves. DroidTh3ory released RAZRX two days ago. He's working on ICS right now. We got Safestrap 2 days ago. Once we get the FXZ files we're probably going to get like 200x the support we're getting right now. Not to mention the Nexus' hardware which is composed of fantastic innards, but a plastic, easy-to-chip case, normal glass screen with minimal scratch resistance, & a weak radio.
It boggles me how you can say dev support is dead with all of the stuff that's LITERALLY happened in the past two days.
quadjacks said:

I posted this somewhere else, there's really 2 reasons for this:
1) Google required that the Nexus come "open".
2) In the agreement to carry the phone, essentially Samsung & Google have taken over support for the phone, to the point where the contract, while through Verizon, is actually supported by Google, and therefore they can dictate the bootloader.
That's what I could gather from reading up on how the Nexus came to be a Verizon phone. There were some pretty heavy negotiations here, and Verizon didn't want Sprint to get the phone, and couldn't stand to have another Iphone/Att&t exclusive situation happen again.
Now, for Moto, they are already heavily tied to Verizon, and so they have no leverage for getting their devices to be released as open.
They even were first (I believe) to start saying they wanted open phones, back when the xoom was released. They made a statement that by late 2011 they were going to release all their phones with unlocked bootloaders like the xoom was......that didn't happen because Verizon threatened to pull the phones if they did that.
Verizon even forced HTC to remove it's bootloader unlock tool on the web, if I'm not mistaken.
So it's really not Moto's fault, it's Verizon's, and the Nexus is going to be the way it is because Google has control, not Verizon.
yeah except the nexus ships locked and is unlockable through adb.

So what you're saying is we'll get a ICS Rom from developers long before any Verizon update to ICS.....right? Because waiting till June is absurd! This phone is just too friggin good to not get some attention......is my opin,anyway....

Will get this information up by Friday. At CES, and have business meetings all day tomorrow.
I haven't looked at the bootloader since the fastboot files were uploaded, and my system DEFINITELY said unlocked, but I thought there was no way that this meant I was lucky enough to have an unlocked bootloader, and I couldn't find any pictures on google of what a locked bootloader looked like on a RAZR.

Although I was walking to the bathroom, and two of the Moto guys were walking in front of me, and I joked....."You guys want to unlock my bootloader for me??" (before I figured out mine was already unlocked).
They didn't think that was too funny, although they understood.
I have a friend who works at Moto Mobility, and he's told me it REALLY isn't much they can do about it. Verizon has made it very clear to Moto that they can't unlock their bootloaders anytime soon, or they risk losing some pretty hefty advertising subsidies, which HTC actually gave up, as well as Samsung.
Moto isn't in a financial position to give those up....so Verizon has them literally by the balls.
Pretty sad really, Moto's devices, to me, are the best constructed on the market. They also seem to have been supportive of the dev's from day 1, or at least a lot more than other companies....ahem Samsung....
I will say, the Droid 4 was looking like a pretty spectacular device.
The RAZR Maxx is too thick for my liking. It's MUCH thicker than the RAZR, which makes it more like a Droid X2 replacement than a RAZR....but the extended battery life would definitely be cool.
I was talking to the guys at the booth about the Droid 4, as I think I'm going to get one next month, and they were getting some good battery life numbers off that unit. One guy was saying he was getting 12-13 hours with moderate to heavy usage on 4G, which would be exactly what I would be looking for.
I checked out the Galaxy Note, and it's not my cup of tea. I already find the RAZR to be too big at times, and the Note is just WAY too large to try and talk on with the headset next to your ear, and with the way the layout is, there's no advantage to using it in landscape with the virtual keyboard, as the keyboard still takes up the entire screen, and you have to use the next button to go to the next field, which causes me errors from time to time on my RAZR (that's really my chief complaint).
As for other things that I saw, the google TV/Android TV applications are all very cool, and could be something great with a little work.
There was an amazing camera concept that was being shown off....while not a real product, it was definitely awesome....check it out here:
www.wvil.de
Sony had the best glasses free 3D TV's shown here. Their UHD 40" glasses free 3D looked really good. The first glasses free 3D TV I could actually say I wanted to own.
LG is still kicking everyone else's asses in the 3D glasses realm, as their passive 3D TV's were hands down the best at the show.
I know 3D seems to be a gimmick, but there was more information on 3D broadcasting equipment, and content creation than at any previous show by almost triple what we've seen. So 3D is here to stay. There are tablets and phones & overlays (complete garbage) that are being shown off in wild numbers.
Intel's concept phone was KILLER!! I don't know who did the hardware on the outside, but the phone flies. It was running android, and man that thing cooked. With only a single core to, the apps were ripping through. If they didn't have the horrible dance routine to a taped production on stage, they would have had the better booths, but I was laughing the whole time this guys was supposed to be "interacting" with the big screen because it was just bad
There were also some really interesting accessories, although I really hate how EVERYTHING is so focused on the iPhone in that area. There were some interesting set up's for DJ'ing off iPads, where you use 2 on stands, and then an analog mixer. (I have built a full touch screen DJ box, which has a 21.5" multi touch LCD that I use so I'm partial to full touch mixing so Analog doesn't interest me anymore) but it was still cool to see.
Android is really, really pushing the envelope of being a development tool for companies to run their applications on. I saw more products that were built off the Android SDK than I expected. There were GPS units, heart monitors, camera stations, wireless blu ray devices, full car dashboards....all kinds of things that were on top of an android platform.
There was even a 3D printing machine, that you could do rendering in Android and have the machine print from there.
Overall, I do have to say, last year was a bit better in terms of shear number of BIG product reveals. It seemed the cell phone guys were a bit mild this year, and the TV people were focused on 4K UHD resolution, while just kind of waiting for 3D content to catch up so people get more interested.
All in all, still the best show in North America year in and year out, and I got to sit in a Lamborghini Aventador for the first time....wow, that's an amazing machine.
Sounds like a great time! I go to Comic-Con every year but I still need to see CES one day

From a computer, can you also try to run:

SPlanner Widget missing is probably a bug. It is on the phone but broken.
Blocking Mode doesn't seem to work with CDMA, which is probably why its blocked by CSC.
APN editing is blocked via CSC but could be unlocked by Verizon if someone didn't want to root.
The wifi thing isn't a missing feature, but its definitely an annoyance.

I see you're complaining but you didn't state the reason why you are petitioning for. Can you be more specific?
Petition
I'm going to attempt to try and post a link, the best I can. I just want the features that should be included on the phone, without rooting it. I do plan on rooting the phone, however as the workaround for the bootloader has only just been accomplished recently, and a lot of the stylus features have yet to be worked into most of the ROMs, that I've seen anyway, I'm holding off until something special perks my interest.
In general, I'm just against Verizon butchering the phone, and needlessly at that. I'm not bashing rooting, or saying I don't want to, I'm simply saying I don't want to root the phone to gain access to stock features that should've been included with the phone in the first place. Its just a little backwards from my view.

Only thing we can do is, give feedback. Companies don't listen to us for their decision. And definately not Petitions.
Its a good thing that you have started the initiative, and even i have participated, but the thing is, it don't work
I would say if you're that upset about Verizon's lack of features either root it and fix it or go to another carrier.
I guarantee Verizon could care less about some silly petition.

I want to leave nobody unhappy. Therefore any device you may have will work. As new phones are introduced it will only take a couple days to activate from my end. Not my software and I've got no control over its release, just found it in the S5 forum and figured most over here would want to see even if it is a longshot.

Don't get excited people. That thread has become an all out flame war and I see warnings and/or bans coming instead of root.. Oh well... ?
is he saying that the app will be able to unlock the bootloader on the verizon retail version of the note 3? Can i have the link to that thread? Thanks.

He was claiming root and bootloader unlock. But instead of getting everyone riled up he probably should have made it a covert job and then "Bam" here you go. Kinda like when the Rezound got s-off. But the thread got way out of control and it's locked now until he can prove he has something substantial. If you'd like to check it out see the first post in this thread and go to original post quote.
While I love the xda community and have been along time member and highly appreciative of the devs.
I'm just about ready to toss this phone in the garbage.
I miss the days of flashing my phone every week to the latest and greatest when I had my original galaxy note for 2 years.
My 2cents
Wow really your going to get frustrated and throw out a phone that costs 400-700$ because you can't flash roms endlessly yeah i get tw sucks and I want to have better options for roms but even if I lost root I would not throw out my note 3.

I feel the same way about my galaxy bloat 3. First and formost i need a phone that works as a phone. This phone has the worst service and software out of any phone i've owned. As far as the sortware goes i thought i would be able to fix it with cm11 but thanks to verizon and me not doing my home work a head of time i'm stuck with the ****tiest phone i've ever owned. I can't wait for july to replace it with a motorola product.
I must be getting old. I don't see a problem with the stock note 3 and the bloat. Yeah the signal could be better but that is on Samsung more than Verizon. And yes Verizon could shorten the approval process for updates and Samsung could drop tw and put out updates in line with the nexus line as all manufactures should the ui should be a app on the app store and be little more than a launcher for people to choose to use if they want.
Not going to happen. If your on big red you likely don't have a choice or it is the best service in your area or your grandfathered into unlimited. The Samsung phones were the only ones with 2 features I am unable to give up battery that is removable and sd card.

If this phone doesn't end up with Lollipop that's rootable or an unlocked bootloader before February, I'm throwing mine at my Verizon Rep's face and picking up a Note 4. We bought Note 3's for only two reasons. The first reason was that the other Note's were easy to root and flash to CM and the second reason was because of the S-Pen. At this point I would take a loss on the S-Pen functionality just to be rid of all of the Samsung Bloat on my phones.
Wow. sounds like you all should be buying an international variant. trashing you phone or going to a N4 with a locked bootloader is not going to solve your problem. I am pleased with my Rooted N3 and have no issues and will stay with Samsung for a while. Root is nice but it's not going to cause me to put my phone in the trash, there are other things in life that are far more important
Yeah way to stick it to Samsung by throwing out last quarters model and buying the brand new one.
I see both sides, though we didn't have ten or fifteen roms to flash, this phone was not a waste at all. It's a solid phone for my use. But flashing roms has become a hobby and I don't like not doing that either. So even though most of the developers are going to the Nexus. I just don't like having no SD or removable battery either. And how are they handling any replacements for a phone currently not carried by Big Red? May not be the place for me to ask that but I'm curious.
You might want to check out the Note 4 forum for scripts that can disable a ton of the bloatware without root. I am still rocking rooted MJE so I can't test it with kitkat. It supposedly will run on most android phones. Just wanted to mention a potential solution until root achieved.

So locked note 3 to a locked down note 4 when you are stuck with the options of motorola or sony for unlockable phones that are on verizon.
IF you really have to have CM 12 you are going to have to either make sure the phone you get at that time has an unlockable bl or is a nexus.
And as for the note 4 it is only a slight upgrade over the note 3 and both will someday get lollipop note 4 sooner than the note 3...

I was just looking for this same thing. I ran across a website that shows it can be done, don't know how valid this is though.
Bright future
It seems the G6 is poised for a bright future if it just catches on...
Samsung always takes the cake though

I'm wondering if anybody plans on root at all in the future before buying this phone. Don't want it if there's no development on it!
There's nothing. Which is a shame because I would be rocking this thing already
This is the first phone I have gotten that I don't have the need to root
Sent from my VS988 using Tapatalk
I like to have AdAway, Folder Mount, Quick Boot, and Xprivacy, which need root.
The lack of root is the only thing keeping me from getting this with the Best Buy deal
Best buy deal was too good to pass up and I got one for a family member coming from an ancient Galaxy S3. Really hoping we see root.
Glad I'm not the only one. I traded in for the V20 but it has to be shipped first and I'd much rather keep the G6.. Awesome phone.

I really want to get it, but the complete lack of discussion about it tells me it's not happening anytime soon.

Agreed. I feel like nothing will ever get root again on verizon unless you buy an unlocked phone for a ton of money or a last year model on swappa - but I always buy new.

I don't know what changed. It seems like there's a new push to lock down Android, it might have to do with Android Pay. It's really a shame. I don't understand the lack of people looking for exploits. Maybe they just aren't posting about it like they used to.

Google has created nearly as much of a "walled-garden" as Apple have. Clearly the "security" concerns of the extreme few have caused quite a panic and nearly all of the major manufacturers have locked down their bootloaders and exploits are being punished legally in some cases. Crazy considering it is all based around "open source" code.
VZW is by far the worse offender and I am only on their network because the others all suck in my area. Not that it matters anymore since practically none of them have rootable devices. Unfortunately the best bet this year is the headphone jackless HTC U11 for a whopping $650 for the unlocked, bootloader mod-allowed version.
Has any one tried Kingo Root?
https://www.kingoapp.com/bootloader-unlock/how-to-unlock-lg-bootloader-on-android-device.htm
I may look into it later this week. I have a few things to try.
What a shame. This phone is fantastic, the LG V20 just showed up for me to pick up and I find myself reluctant to pick it up. I know it has root, as I roofed it for my boyfriend, after extreme difficulty it worked but all the custom ROMs for it made it where he can't receive texts or calls. Haven't gone looking for the fix yet. I may wait.
Crossing my fingers at the above post. You'd be my saving Grace. (;

Oh and for KingORoot, you need to ask for the OEM unlock code through LG but this phone isn't apart of their available devices. Exploit please!
I fixed his V20, now is rooted with custom ROM and calling and text officially work. Is it enough for me to give up my G6 for root? Still reluctant. Yes, that's how good it is.
Autoprime just posted in the main G6 dev area, it sounds like he is doing a bit of poking at the platform.
It doesn't directly help vs988, but any sign of an experienced developer working the G6 is great.
