Dock or car mode? - Nokia Lumia 920

Hey, I'm a transfer from android (Nexus 4) and I'm wondering if this device, or any other windows 8 phones have dock mode, or something comparable that keeps the screen on while activated?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

This could probably be done with a NFC tag that you could program to do it.

can you not change the screen settings while on battery and while on A/c?

Screen keepalive is handled by individual apps. Satnav apps and clock apps, for instance, keep the screen on.

Smart stay.

I've been using my sgs3 with smart stay enabled and noticed it doesn't seem to be sensing me looking at it.. I wear glasses.. and I'm wondering if this is a limitation ?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
I also wear glasses and i find it works fine for me. Remember it doesnt work in low lights.
I Just tested it and it's not working without glasses on either. I see the 'eye' in the notification bar flash after 15 seconds, then it dims the screen, then again 5 seconds later and then screen switches off.
I've had smart stay enabled since day 0 and the phones had a few power cycles/reboots.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Doesn't work for me with my glasses on or off. Must be my face!
doesn't work for me either. not smart
maybe the galaxy just doesn't like your faces?
maybe that's what samsung meant with it being smart. hehe
seriously i have read somewhere it is the face it is tracking not just the eyes.
It even worked when my Dogs were looking at at a few times, and it's annoying because often I put phone off to the side not looking at it and still stays on and wasting battery.
I'm sorry, I didn't realise Samsung required users to look like dogs for this feature to work.
I'm thinking of flashing a custom Rom anyhow.. be interesting to see f it works on another Rom.

Well I do look a bit Ruff.
I just got my Galaxy. Seem to have the same issue, it's not working. Well I think there will be a software update soon enough.
If I consciously blink every so often I'm able to keep the screen on, but if I don't move or blink it turns off - at least that's how it seems to me.
Can't really get it working consistently yet.
I've had my phone since launch and it dimms but never turns off. I wear both glasses and contact lenses.
If the front camera is.nt pointed towards your face it may turn off however which is annoying sonetimes
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Hi,
I got smart stay working!
I opened the camera, switched to front facing and positioned the camera so that my face was in the centre of the screen and taking up about 50% of the area.
Now when switching to home screen the little eye kept popping up and going away and the screen stayed on!
Paul
I noticed it works flawless. I have it set too 30 seconds.

Great
I find it very useful and works great, I don't wear glasses and I'v only had it two days but does as expected, I can look at it for 10 minutes and it won't turn off, if i point it away from me it turns off after my timeout.
I found if I closed my eyes and squinted one eye a tiny bit open it still didn't turn off though, but it's not like I'm playing hide and seek with it.

when i watch the screen, the screen didn't turn off, -> ok, this is work
but then i closed my eyes about 2 minutes, then when I opened my eyes, the screen didn't turn off
It works for me. I don't wear glasses though.
Correction, it has problems in landscape mode.

I find it is a mixed bag. It rarely turns off when I am looking at it. But on lots of apps the screen dims meaning I have to touch the screen anyway. This rather defeats the point if you ask me!

Buying Xperia S, got few questions.

EDIT: Wrong forum, sorry. Please do move it to Q&A section.
I was decided on getting Galaxy Nexus (dat fast updates + looks), when I've read news about google decision to take SXS for AOSP.
Then I reconsider my decision, and choose Sony device as option (I haven't before, because of Sony, I mean SE past, and their sloppy or never done updates). It's actually 100$ cheaper, so it's advantage too.
I have doubts about its buttons. I haven't got chance to test it yet (but will do). Can you tell me if they are responsive or not ? I currently have Galaxy S, so comparison to it would be nice.
Also, how long battery lasts? Unfortunately gsmarena haven't done their test on blog so I can't compare.
Thanks in advance
Compared to the Galaxy S, the buttons on the XPERIA S are simply unresponsive... it requires some adjusting (swiping instead of pressing) but you'll get used to it.
Accoriding to a test from a Dutch website, under heavy duty it's battery will last about 12 hours. Under normal conditions 30+ is manageable: http://translate.google.nl/translate?twu=1?sl=auto&tl=en&u=tweakers.net/reviews/2592/3/welke-smartphone-doet-het-langst-met-zijn-accu-resultaten-welke-doen-het-het-best.html

honestly. i never understood the fact that Xperia S buttons are unresponsive. I've never had issue with them. most people i know never complained.
then again, everyone press/touch stuff differently
If you need to be precise on the buttons, you want to try them out yourself.
in terms of battery it's alright when you recycle it after 2 weeks (let it die and recharge it to full etc) i usually get 10-12hrs normal daily basis (listening to music, surf, txt, etc)
I've come to the Xperia S from the One X, and yeah technical downgrade, but a like the SXS much more! Though the ui isn't as smooth, mostly thanks to Sony I think, the ui is cooler! Love Sony's launcher, I just hope it gets smoother with an update in the near future..
Now, the buttons! First, they will be a little weird and feel unresponsive, but after a little use they work fine. I have absolutely no issues there..
Battery is far far better them what I'm use to! I've been using my phone for bluetooth music and navigation today, which means Bluetooth on, GPS on and screen on for about 1 hour! And this is without charging.. The day is done and I have 17% left, just checked screen time to be 2.5 hours and up time is 16 hours.
Sidenote: [Edit] My One X would never have been able to do this..

buttons ain't anywhere as good as those on galaxy s, i have both the phones, sliding helps but i can never hit the buttons in landscape mode..u'll get used to it and it ain't a deal breaker
Also, the black levels are a bit of a concern, i mean it's no amoled but it has the worst black levels i'hv seen. I compared it to my lcd tv, an iPhone 4 and even some old Nokia phones, xperia had the worst black levels (coz of white magic i guess). It just bumps you when you are used to seeing an amoled screen, but on the contrary, the sunlight readability is quite good
Battery is decent, but wake locks has been a problem for me so far, but that's just a software glitch

For example. During night it loses about 7%, from 11 Pm to 6 Pm... But it's been a while I've not paid attention. About Juice Defender, you need to set it up better, so it don't do what you don't want it to do. The first days it always disabled my WiFi when I simply locked the screen. But if you do the right settings on the Advanced option, it will be really good. It claims to save from x1.70 to x2.40...

What is wake lock? When you unlock your phone, you can use it, but screen is all black ? I did happen to me once or twice on Galaxy S, but that's all. Is this a common issue with SXS?
EDIT: This Captcha is so unreadable and annoying arghgh.

wake lock produces battery drain by unnecessarily putting the phone in "awake" mode when it should be in deep sleep. Some of my experiences with miui and the current .58 rom (it gives around 5 hrs of display time but the wake locks are still there)

How bad is daydream?

I got interested in this feature. I keep my phone at a home made dock and was wondering if having daydream on thus my screen on for 8-9 hours every night is a bad thing or not
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
Put simply, screen on = battery drain. How much will depend on how much you use it. And there's also burn in to consider if you've constantly got the screen on.
Then again, if you're getting a new phone every 2 yrs, that probably won't be much of an issue. If you're planning on using it longer, it might be.
Edit - It was one of the first things I turned off when I flashed RootBox for those reasons.
As long as its a dark image and moves regularly it shouldn't do any damage. Something like beautiful widgets daydream is a no no as it has a light background
Daydream
A very intersting and useful feature but might drain your battery quickly
I am planning to use it with the charger plugged in. About burn in, I thought SAMOLED screens did not have it?
I will be using the clock daydream by the way
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
Yep they do suffer burn in. XDA is littered with example of same over the past two years.
The more 'static' & bright the image and the longer you display these images at any one time, the greater the chance of burn in.
But again, if you get a new phone 'regularly', that probably won't bother you.

Note 3 Pros & Cons Ive Discovered so far..

I just got my Note 3 a few days ago (upgraded from the Note 2) and I am gonna list of what i think are my pros and cons about the Note 3. Feel free to post your opinions as well...
Pros:
*Speed & performance is smoother than the Note 2, the extra 1gb of ram and 2.3 snap dragon is nice.:good:
*Boot up is way quicker than the Note 2.
*I like the new back cover better than the Note 2 and design of the phone.
*The features on the camera are nice as well as the phone features.
Cons:
*Knox! Was using SetCPU on my rooted Note 3 & Knox kept force closing it with its security notification (unless your using a rom)
*The loud speaker is poorly placed on the bottom as well and i tend to cover it sometimes while playing games landscape mode
*The stylus pen is harder to prey out of the phone itself
*The mic is badly placed on the lower left side and if your like me i hold it with my pinky and sometimes cover it up.
*The camera sucks at focusing up close shots, for example if im taking a up close shot of a paper with small writing.
*Phone runs hot sometimes on the upper back side of the phone around the camera area.
*Every time i disable the "transition animation scale" in the developer options....some how when i use the camera it re-enables it all the time.
This was all happening while being on stock non-rooted, hopefully in the future they fix these problems...but for now im actually thinking of going back to my Note 2

Thanks for your observations. I will disagree with you on a few points based upon my experience...
The battery life on my Note 3 is much better than on my Note 2
I'm glad that the S-Pen is harder to pull out. We have over 600 Note 2s at work and people have lost their S-Pens because they have fallen out somewhere.
I have not experienced the phone running hot at all.

Pro's & Con's
I have the Sprint white 32gig model.
The Pros:
Bright screen
Battery lasts better than my Note 2
Charges faster with the new USB 3.0 plug
Screen size is nice
Faster/better 3G data connect than Note 2
Cons: (taking a deep breath)
The voice quality on a connected call is horrible, with snaps, crackles, and pops.
The Wi-Fi antenna is horrible. Laptop connects at "Excellent signal strength" while the Note 3 displays "signal not stable/weak signal" and doesn't connect. Sometimes it also sits there stating, "verifying IP address" and never connects, while the laptop is connected fine.
There seems to be a slight delay between screen tap and execution of an app.
The SNote program is buggy, with templates you don't actually type into (i.e., lined paper template) as on the Note 2. The templates are more like wallpapers, and misaligned to the text (further giving you that feel that there's a disconnection between screen and input).
The KIES program is not backwards compatible. The 3.0 version does not support the Note 2's 2.6 version, making backup/restore from Note 2 onto Note 3 impossible. There's no way to get Native "phone" calendar entries on the Note 2 over to the Note 3. The Smartswitch app also doesn't transfer Note 2 native calendar entries over to the Note 3.
The web interface is buggy when trying to enter text in web forms. Text changes size as you're typjng, obscuring your view of what you're typing. Entering text within a web text field is difficult in landscape mode as there's one to two lines to work with because the screen keyboard/word detection and notification bar cover everything else. You can disable some of these in settings, but a like to see the time when I'm typing.
There is an obvious delay between tapping on a text entry field and and the Swype keyboard displaying.
Just my observations
John
And sometimes when i press the unlock button to turn the screen on it turns on super bright for a quick sec then dims back down to where i had it...not sure if its because i have it unclocked to run slower and screen off or not though....

Screen won't turn on after calls

During a call my screen turns off like normal but just recently when it turns off, I can't turn it back on even when pressing the power or home button. There are rare occasions where even when I'm not on the phone, I can't turn the screen on.. It always results in a battery pull then it works fine again. My phone was normal and working perfectly and I haven't done any mods.. Kinda weird, anyone with input on this?
I'm rooted running version 2 Jbomb, 2.3 beastmode kernel, mj4. Could it maybe be these apps that cause this, lux, gravity screen, light flow.. Those are the 3 main apps that are always running.

Sounds like you may have some gremlins. I would do a clean install of your ROM and install those 3 apps 1 at a time checking for the problem to repeat. Joshes ROMs are typically very clean. Could be the Beastmode kernel also.

Nope. Most likely dirt in your proximity sensor. Try blowing real hard in the ear piece or use one if those air cans. Mine does the same and it sounds like a lot of people have the same issue
Sent from my SM-N900P using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I can guarantee it's. Gravity Screen. I use both Lux and Gravity Screen and I'm on a Nexus 4. Google brought me here. I was hoping I'd find something in the gravity screen thread but search isn't picking anyone talking about it.
fwiw I only use it for the Keep Screen On by motion so any the other features are unchecked.
I also use an app called screebl which is more reliable and has been around much longer but I flip between the two.
Screebl also got completely rewritten recently so I'm thinking it's probably the more reliable of the two since it's been around longer.
Aside from that I'm thinking it might be the Running During Call checkbox since it's the only other checkbox checked.
I'd disabled the other settings by moving the sliders to zero (per the developer) and unchecking everything but the 2 checkboxes for keeping screen on by motion-left its slider at 50.
...so either uncheck that ringer checkbox. If that doesn't work it's a bug with the app.
It's inherent to almost any Samsung phone. My SII did it. My S4 did it. My Note 3 does it.
It has to do with the proximity sensor changing too quickly.

Sometimes it cuts both ways, with the rare occasion of the screen not waking up when a call comes in. If you're running deep sleep app, sometimes that can be the culprit. I still use it, though.
