Folks,
I just bought two new HTC EVO 3D's from Rogers. They came loaded with crap apps that can't be removed and that doesn't sit well with me.
What I know today: HBOOT=1.49.0008 and they're S-ON.
I'm not entirely sure if the GSM rooting instructions I found here (by happyhillsy8) apply as they run over the Rogers UMTS network. As I understand it, UMTS is a GSM variant.
Question:
1 - Do GSM rooting instructions apply to these devices?
2 - How do you determine which ROM version they have?
Thanks in advance
well there are a few different ways to root the 3d. The simplest and most effective imo is revolutionary (revolutionary.io). The program is compatible with the evo 3d gsm with your hboot, just make sure you dont upgrade it before using the program. the complete list can be found here:
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
as for determining which rom, im not quite sure what you mean. You can figure out which rom you have by going into your settings and looking at your software information. If you're asking about which roms work on the gsm 3d, theres a whole gsm developement section.
Cheers. I just got my evo 3d (cdma) a few hours ago, and rooted with revolutionary. running infectedrom. works great
i want to flash my evo 3d to use with a virgin mobile account since there is a version of the evo 3d that is on virgin is there a easy way to flash this and get it done please advise.

Are you unlocked through htcdev or revolutionary? If so, the leaked ICS ROM is based off the Virgin Mobile release, so you could try flashing that and see if that works for you. I am a Sprint customer and am grasping at straws, so maybe someone on Virgin Mobile would have more info for you.

Htcdev I figured I could use that but didn't know if it would fix the radios. I'm also a Sprint customer just tryin to get this flashed for a friend. Hope someone can help.
I also want to know if it's possible to use an Evo 3D on VM. From what I've read, sounds like the VM firmware has caused a lot of people a lot of headaches. My Evo 3D has S-Off. I'm not a total newb at all this stuff, but I'm also fuzzy on a lot of stuff too. Any ideas guys? Can Evo 3D be used on VM?

The 3d is coming out/ is out for VM, so the answer is yes. I could be wrong, but I think the VM firmware caused problems for Sprint customers because they are not VM customers. The phone was acting like a VM phone instead of a Sprint one. Seeing as the leak was written by HTC for VM phones, it should work to set up your 3d for VM. But, I'm a Sprint customer and have not tried it myself, so YMMV.

That is my understanding as well, being the VM firmware causing issues for Sprint.
However, because we do not have GSM phones using SIM cards, we can't simply unlock our phones. CDMA phones have to be flashed to another networks (i.e. Metro PCS, Cricket, Boost, etc.).
This thread is an example to flash to Metro PCS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1303507&highlight=cricket
So, since there is a process to flashing, I think it's a bit more involved than just simply flashing firmware.
I called VM to see if they would just let me transfer my phone over as my contract is just about up with Sprint (and VM is owned by Sprint). They said no. I called Boost Mobile and asked if I could use my phone on their network and the guy basically said maybe. He said we could try, but he wasn't 100% certain. It would be nice to have the carrier actually authorize it...
I've seen those flashing guides and they seem pretty intense. I'm willing to do the work if it will work out, but I'd prefer VM. Anyone seen a flashing guide for VM? Anyone here use boost?

From my cursory skimming of that thread, it appears to be how to get a Sprint Rom to work on Metro. Since the ICS leak is VM based, I would think it would work out of the box with VM as long as it has not been Sprint-ified by a dev. Especially the most recent leak.
Maybe one of the more knowledgeable devs would know for certain.

So your theory is that an Evo 3D with the VM ICS leak could be activated on VM?
No, you have to do some "illegal" acts to get a sprint evo 3d on vm. So, there is no world where flashing a rom will make it available on another network.

What are these "illegal" acts that would allow me to use the phone I payed for with phone service I also paid for?

Changing esn is illegal. And that's what you have to do with vm. No matter how you look at it, it is.

ESN changing is ILLEGAL
ESN changing is illegal in most countries, and not allowed on XDA to be discussed on how to do it. Thanks.
My 3d evo is flash to pager plus right now will it be easy for me to flash it verizon prepaid and would i have to change a lot or little everything is working
It will be just as easy/hard as it was to flash to your current carrier. If you don't know how to do it, I suggest you find someone who does.
Few days ago i found a HTC EVO 4G Sprint I found out its been flashed to MetroPCS and rooted but it keeps turning off and vibrating 3 times then staying black screen maybe is missing some files since i found it with no sd card i tried putting a sd card but it wont read it. So my question is there away anyone can help me set it back to stock step by step. Thanks in advanced.

You need to go to the EVO 4G forum. http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-evo-4g
The EVO View 4G is a 7" tablet made by HTC for Sprint. http://reviews.cnet.com/tablets/htc-evo-view-4g/4505-3126_7-34555254.html
It is a bit confusing for Sprint's line of HTC devices, much like Verizon's Droid line, where they use a similar naming convention.
There's the EVO 4G, the 4.3" smartphone.
Then there's the EVO Shift 4G, a smartphone with a physical keyboard.
Then there's the EVO View 4G, a tablet based on the HTC Flyer (which is the first device mentioned in this forum's title).
Then there's the EVO 4G LTE, a smartphone based on the HTC One X but modified to be the successor to the EVO 4G.
info about my phone HTC EVO V- S-OFF- running hood pope rom
I've been thinking about taking my phone to either ting or page plus or somewhere else I'm not sure. The primary reason I'm thinking of doing this is cause no roaming on virgin and where i work there is no coverage on sprint but there is on Verizon.
So with that, does anyone know a good carrier to do this with?
Will I still be able flash roms for the htc evo v?
n if i did would i half to make modifications once done, so the mms or data or whatever would work?
thanks for any help u guys can provide
