EVO LTE Defender Case - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I just received my replacement case from Otterbox today. May I say "WOW", much improved over the launch case. The new case seems to have shaved the slightest bit of plastic from the sides to make it a kind of struggle to clip together. I don't know about you guys (or the ladies), but I like a case that holds my phone firmly. That's not all though, I noticed that the foam pieces they adhere to the back plate are a little thicker than the original as well. Now for the shell, this thing is wicked hard to get off the plastic now (may cause the power and headphone port flaps to break a little quicker). It feels a little more "plasticy", but it is a huge improvement over the former almost elastic rubber. Just figured I'd let you guys know, Otterbox is finally getting things right.

Is it possible to post up close pics? I'm about to call them for the 20th time and get another silicon shell. Its all stretched out and the flap to the charging port is soon to come off. I have had problems with what I already said as well as the little clip lip breaking off what snaps the phone in. What was your complaint to get a replacement? Did you get a full replacement?

I will try to get some pics tomorrow. I've had a pretty busy week. The plastic case broke right at some of the clips, and that didn't bother me until I tried to put it in my holster and the holster snapped, because it didn't fit right with the broken clips (I honestly never thought that would happen). Anyway, when I broke the holster, I inadvertently pushed my phone to the ground and broke the screen (landed just right on the top right corner). They ended up sending me a full replacement, and apologized profusely about my phone. I was honestly going to get a different case, but when I received my replacement, I was more than happy with the improvements in quality.

Cool. I called them yesterday and they are also sending me a complete replacement. I told them I heard they have a new design and said its quite possible they are always upgrading due to complaints. I won't get the case until 2 weeks so if you could get pics that'd be awesome thanks man I understand your busy as am I with this crazy Christmas mess.

i highly doubt they changed anything around. my original plastic part of the case broke one of its clips and they sent me a new complete case and it seemed like the old case, just newer. Id imagine its just a new case to you, and can be worn in just like the old one

In the same boat fellas - on my second replacement case after the originals charger port broke off. Judging by the look of the port now, the same thing is going to happen AGAIN.
The replacements we recieved haven't been revised - the rubber intially felt diffferent but over time as it wears and oils from the hands or other substances are transferred it took on the same feel as my older case.
To be sure I followed up with the Otter rep that handled my replacement. This is the response I recieved back from Otterbox:
"Hi Marcus,
Your welcome! At this time the silicone has not changed from the originally one that you had. We are however constantly looking at ways to improve on all of our products and the silicone issue has been brought to our attention from loving customers like you. Oh well at least they have a warranty & good customer service. I have probably had pushing 10 claims by now with no problem. Imagine if there was no warranty

Yeah just received my third replacement since launch. One thing I will say is they stand behind their warranty. After the first complaint they sent me 2 silicone replacements, then after both of those suffered from the same problem as the original, they just sent me a whole new case. Hard shell and all. It sucks that they don't work like they are supposed to, but as long as they keep replacing them free of charge I guess I can't complain too much.

I just filled out the warranty for my third replacement as well. The usb flap last a few weeks before it starts to tear and by about two months the rubber is very loose.

Otterbox is GREAT about their warranty!! I've had multiple replacements on multiple devices! They never question you or give you any problems. I bought a used black Commuter on ebay just because I knew I could get a new one directly from Otterbox in exchange for the used one! Saved me some money in exchange for a little wait time. Got a new case for less than half price, actually MUCH less than half of the retail price!!

i'm about to get my 3rd silicone slip cover..... like all of you they begin to warp near the upper right hand corner of the phone. After this happened the first time, I was extremely careful whenever I grabbed the phone from my pocket, or whenever I pressed the volume rocker in an effort to extend the life of the slip cover... and it did last 2 months longer than the original slip cover did.... but still it eventually warped. I realize the 3rd slip cover is going to be no different.... but why not get one more slip cover before my warranty expires?
honestly, I dont care that the charging port flap breaks, frankly it's annoying having that flap so I like it when it finally breaks off.
I'm really tempted to just ditch the otterbox case and take my chances with the bare phone (this phone is one of the better looking phones out there).... but then every couple of weeks I'll drop the phone and remember that's why I bought an otterbox case.

Trident case Kraken. That is my next one after I run out of slip covers. I love popping out the plastic and using Zagg hd shields though.

Photon sides scratch easy?

I'm looking into taking my 3d back and getting an photon. But when I was looking at it it seemed like the sides around the screen was a plastic that would scratch really easily. Kinda like on the nexus s. I was just wondering if it does scratch really easily or if it just looks like it would. Thanks.

Just pulled mine out of its pocket, and it's the same gorilla glass material as the screen itself. No scratches.
alright thanks. How are you liking it so far? I'm on my 3rd 3d EVO now and for a "flagship" device I should not be on my 3rd one. The first one the 3d switch wouldn't work the second one had 9 dead pixels all in the same area and a tone of dust under the screen. And now this ones speaker is going out.

Get a case to protect the phone. That is what I did. I feel a bit more safer with the case on than without it despite it making the phone a bit thicker.
I probably will. I'll check out the defender case or something.

Wow, ouch!
I picked up mine a week ago tonight, and it's been great. First thing I did was flash the MR3 leaked maintenance release, then I rooted it, then installed my standard suite of customizations.
All in all, I've been happy with the P4G vs my Evo 4G. The Pentile screen bothers some, but as I've been posting elsewhere, if you play with the brightness setting, it is negligible. A few colors come across oddly, but given the power efficiency trade-off that comes from Pentile's implementation, that is acceptable to me.
Data speeds have been great. Games & apps have been butter smooth thanks to the gig of RAM and dual core CPU. I had some issues with the battery but that was due some bad settings on my part with two monitoring apps & k9 Mail polling instead of pushing, but I finally diagnosed & resolved those yesterday.

My 1st Photon developed a dent! I'll try my best to explain this.....on the right side above AND center of the volume rocker where screen meets the side of case....yes....right there.
Another way to say it....the volume rocker has grooves but in the center of the rocker, there are no grooves. Ok...from the no groove area....travel up to the side of the phone where the glass meets.
Now, I hadn't dropped my phone so I'm more than 100% positive I didn't cause the dent so I returned it for another.
Normally I inspect the hell out of my phones before leaving the store- not sure why I didn't that time.
I'm thinking it was packaged that way because the phone showed absolutely no signs of having been dropped down the steps.
On day 1, I bought the Motorola/Sprint hard cover/holster along with the HD dock and Car dock. Now putting on the holster back cover will scratch one of the sides of the Photon since I take it on and off every time I place the Photon in the Car dock.
Although technically one can/is suppose to leave the holster back cover on and snap it into the car dock, I've haven't been able to initialize car dock mod since it doesn't make good contact with the dock pins. So I have to take off the holster back cover and place the photon into the car dock with that adapter strip that comes with the car dock. So I've noticed a tiny scratch on the photon side.

Lol...itll get scratched regardless one day...just be safe

Looking for new OEM stock battery back door

Mine unfortunately creeks and I think that it has to do with the back battery door.
I would like to find a new one so I don't have to put paper behind it to keep it from creeking.
If you have one from a Refurb or anything like that please PM me as I would be very grateful to purchase this.
Pretty sure I've seen them on Verizon's web site. Not terribly expensive.

hopefully this will fix the need for some paper behind the battery to stop the door from creeking.
will update when the new back door arrives!
Eventually these things will be everywhere like the inc2 as the back battery doors actually come with refurb replacements from Verizon. I myself had 3 extras for my inc2 lol.
Just got my new backdoor in this morning.
100% fixed the creeking noise on my phone!!
very happy about that, I have however kept a few small pieces of paper behind the door as there was a little gap frop the back door to the battery that i could feel, perhaps this was on purpose for cooling of battery? idk, not sure but my battery hasn't gotten any hotter than normal.
I've swapped out 2 battery doors and I still have the creaking. I'm fairly certain the only phones that don't creak are the iphone and droid razr/razr maxx.
my first rezound creaked like crazy, then i had a replacement sent out and it was fine. pretty weird issue to have lol.
Just add some papers the size of the battery behind the door, works wonders.
The back cover/door for the extended battery is a piece of crap, and creaks like a rusty hinge all the time. So annoying. I finally got it to almost entirely stop by taking some sticky notes and cutting two thin strips on the adhesive part, and sticking them on the sides of the inside of the back cover, then sticking a little bit of paper on top of the battery. For mine, at least, most of the sound was coming from where you grip it on the sides and this solved it.
@HTC: It's annoying that we have to do this, please take more care with the design of it on future super-phones. Save the cheap back covers for mid-range/low-end phones, in my opinion. Lol.
Og droid had a metal back cover and didn't creak. I had a bionic, and it creaked

Mine doesn't creak at all.
Are you guys using some sort of death grip or something? Don't use the extended battery often but neither it or the regular door creaks.
Via Rezound using XDA Premium
No creaking here either.
Standard door does not creek at all. The extended one does a tiny bit on the right side, if I death grip it like someone above said lol. Not annoying enough to try and fix it.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
Both mine creek. The extended one creeks the worse that's for sure. It doesn't matter how you hold it. Not the biggest deal though since I don't use it too often. I don't seem to get that much more life out of it to justify the size compared to the standard battery.
KORM via the beast known as the Rezound.
I have an awful creak on the left side. I am going to try a bit of gaffers tape.
My extended battery door doesn't creak but is missing the Beats logo. I noticed they didn't forget the HTC logo..
Tape didn't fix it.
Any ideas?

The Naked HP Touchpad

I was wondering if any of you do not use sleeves or cases or skins to protect your Touchpad. If so, can you report on the cosmetic condition or damages? Any excessive scratches on the back, or damage to any of the access slots, speaker, head phone jack, etc.
No protection on mine. My touchpad is kinda my throw around tablet as I'm not as careful with it as I am with my other devices. Had it for about a year no scratches on the screen at all, looks brand new. The back is a different story there are many hairline scratches all over the back and a one inch crack at the micro usb
no protection. i throw mine around.
my only damage is that the plastic right around one of the speakers is broken. at first glance it looks completely fine, but if i move it, it dangles. ill probably fix it eventually with some glue
I dont have mine in a case, but it doesn't get much use outside and I tend to take care of my gadgets, bit of a clean freak.
I worry about dropping it though, having used a 7 inch tab more than this the weight difference is a little off putting time to time
Sent from my cm_tenderloin using xda premium
Had mine since Christmas 2011. I tend to use mine only on the weekends at home. I have the custom case and a touchstone charger. I am extra careful with it and so far I have no speaker cracks or scratches anywhere. Right now I am listening to some old school rock with my Touchpad WebOs only on the Touchstone next to my desktop. Gotta say I really wish that HP would have continued supporting and making these as WebOs and the Touchpad are awesome. If you were to imagine a world without Apple or Android these would be considered awesome. I love mine and even with my Android phone I enjoy each time I power it up.
I've had two and one developed cracks in speakers and headphone jacks on its own.
HP though offered to service it and I just got it back with what seems like a replaced back casing.
I'm probably going to get a case now just incase

Definitely doesn't help that the touch pad is one of the heaviest 10 inch tablets either.

I really don't like most cases because of the extra bulk they create and even though they are protecting your investment, they hide the aesthetics of the product. I usually go with a decal skin on the back and then throw them into a sleeve when I am on the go.
With the touchpad, until recently, I often used the official case and I like it, but missed the purity of interacting with the tablet directly. Without the case the Touchpad feels pretty balanced and even more fun to use. The only thing I have noticed is that the head phone jack opening feels a little rough and of course I am more conscious of the speakers and take more care not to grab it from the bottom edge.
As for a stand, I love the http://twelvesouth.com/products/compass/. A little pricey but compact and low profile with rubber bumpers in all the right places.
Acase
I have used this model from Acase since I bought my TP. It provides some degree of protection from drops/etc., and is functional for reading/using at a desk, in a chair or in bed --- lots of viewing options. Pretty slim case, given other options out there. Holds up good (I've had it for over 8 months). Overall, I'd buy it again.
Acase(TM) HP TouchPad High Quality Premium Slim Leather Case Folio with built-in Stand for HP TouchPad 9.7-inch WebOS Tablet Wi-Fi 16GB, 32GB (Black)
I just did a search on Amazon and you can find it there.
Good luck.
So, it seems from the replies here that the back is, not surprisingly, more vulnerable to scratches, much like the iPhone 3G was. But it is great to know that some of you, like me have thrown away the case (or never used one) and the world didn't end. Just a few scuffs . . .
I read somewhere that Steve Jobs thought that all the covers and cases for the original iPad disguised the original intention and design of the iPad too much. Whether you like Steve Jobs or not, he kind of had a point. So much thought goes into the design of these incredible pieces of technology and yet we tend to hide them with a big case.

I've had two touchpads to date, the first I received with no working sound; took it to a shop the next day and they agreed to replace, thankfully they had some remaining stock. The first did have a small crack from the speaker (If I recall correctly it was the left, if that makes any difference) to the front, it was their upon opening.
The replacement I received had no visible defect, but has since developed a crack on the speaker (very similar placement, but on the other side) along with a crack from the headphone jack to the front. I am incredibly careful with my devices, and this is the first of anything I've ever cracked let alone scratched. It's been in the official case since day one. I do wonder whether the touchstone could be to blame? I have noticed on occasion, in both WebOS and CM9, that it can heat up to an intolerable-to-hold level, to the extent that the device beings to smell (suspect that's the plastic casing?). As it's within the official case, this took me by surprise-- possibly the expanding and contracting of parts has caused the cracks? I wonder if that's a common trend amongst those with cracks and those without?
I'm still happy with the device, the cracks don't bother me as much as they should (primarily because I managed to get one in the firesale) and this is coming from someone whom is particularly anal regarding damages to devices.
I think I am eventually going to get a skin for my TouchPad and then get one of these for when Im not using it:
http://shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-o...aoid=20715&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=FB493AA#AC3
After my most recent warranty replacement started to have cracking speakers in the official case, I super glued the affected areas and threw a skinomi 'carbon fiber' vinyl skin on t and for the last 2 months, I've enjoyed my TP more than ever. I use a $3 Verizon tablet sleeve and wish I had done this from the start rather than using the official case or a tpu case I was using. Also, screen protectors definitely aren't necessary. I have yet to drop the TP without the case on but this skin provides excellent grip and scratch protection as well as keeping the back clean-looking.

It's an amazing case. I like it, except the belt clip has failed after 1 month of use.
Here's a photo of the point of failure. I took the phone out which is usually just clipped on just bit past the side of my hip near the back. And it came out with ease, and upon inspection the clip cracked.

Anyone in contruction use this case? Im a painter and am around a TOn of dust and such all day. Ive been using a plastic baggie for years to put my phone. Getting a little old LOL. Just wondering if there are alot of access point for dust to get inside? [email protected]
I are in commercial construction and i get a little dust around the the kickstand and speaker opening and cam lens but easy enough to wipe that off. My case keeps the rest looking brand new

I'm a stone mason, I cut stone on a regular basis....I take my 16 part Defender case off about every other day and clean the dust off of it. So I would say that it doesn't do great, but it doesn't suck in this department either.
I also use my holster because I'm just not a fan of putting this giant case/phone in my pocket, but the problem with that is that if you turn it screen out, well obviously that's just bad....if you turn it screen in, your camera is wide open - I usually end up using a q-tip or a shirt on the end of pen or something to clean the dust off of it.
I'm actually looking for some type of rubber plug of some sort to go over the camera on this defender case - no luck yet.
Overall though, I've dropped this phone in the defender a bunch of times on the worksite - nothing bad yet.

I'm a mechanic and I work on a lot of dirty cars, and on the weekends when I switch to my tpu case there is very little dirt inside the case. The only place I worry about is the speaker, but no case is gonna cover that.

one problem i have with this case is the lil rubber flap that goes over the charge port.. it keep wearing down from opening it and closing it.. after a few months it just falls off.. they already sent me a new outter layer and it just happen again!!! kinda sux... i kno they will send another one put it just a pain in the a$$.. i mite just deal with it being off.. i work around dust sometimes but i put my phone in my backpack anyways..
I gave up on my Otterbox cause of that flap. I finally went with a screen protector and TPU case and I'll probably never go bad to a thick case again. Going thin bought a new found joy in my phone. Also that screen protector on the defender was horrible. I totally forgot how beautiful my screen looks without that horrible screen protector.

ima have to check up that tpu case.. i here alot of good things about that case.. does it come with a belt clip??
I used to use a TPU case and the invisishield HD screen protector. Was a great combo up until I noticed the bottom left corner of aluminum was bent. I was able to straighten it out and just recently ordered the OtterBox Defender and despite the extra bulk I am still happy with it.
I just contacted otterbox for another case replacement today. I have ran thru 3 cases and 2 clips now since June. The little dust flap for the charger port snapped off just from normal use charging once a day at nighttime. Still love the case and am definitely getting my $ worth.

My charging port is about to to too....
I wanted to get another different branded tough case - but I hate that most others use that fake kickstand and cover the actual one.

Pitting/surface scratches

Curious how everyone else's phones have been holding up so far. The back of my phone is covered in little specks, which appear to be from pitting and minor surface scratches. It's very disappointing since I've had my phone permanently in a case since I've had it. I'm wondering if the metal is just so soft that little vibrations while in the case is causing marks.
I'm hoping there's a way I can get them out but seeing as it has a brushed finish, I don't see it being all that easy.
That's indeed pretty surprising (marks with a case on). I would think the only way this would be possible, is if there was some grit or sand between the case and the device. If this were in fact true, I can see it rubbing on the finish over time (as others here have also mentioned). Even so, the scratches would probably just be in isolated areas, not for the back to be covered in scratches, unless there was grit captured everywhere inside the case. Which is very unlikely, as you would have noticed that.
The other possibility is scratches from a hard plastic case (you haven't mentioned what kind you have). Again, this is something that some folks on here have observed. But folks have mentioned scratches in a few isolated locations (like the edges) not covering the back.
I have had a cheap soft TPU case on my M8 for a month and a half, and not a single visible scratch on the back, that I can find.
The dirt/sand certainly makes sense. But I've repeatedly taken out the case and cleaned it, and it appears like I'm getting more of these. The case, is a soft tpu clear case.
Further, I only rarely use this case once a day for an hour when I go to the gym. The rest of the time my phone sits in my leather pouch, which I KNOW there's no way that's scratching it.
It certainly shouldn't be getting marked up like this from such careful use. I'll try to post pics later.

Sorry for the linked images. You can download them to see full size. It's very difficult to capture up close. But you can see the specks all ordier the phone.

Anyone? I'm wondering if there's a defect in my casing and if I should ask for a new one or not. Combined with my letters falling out my resale value is definitely going to hurt by this.

Haven's seen anyone else complain about this. Its especially weird, since you have a case on the phone. I can only guess the finish is delaminating or falling off, regardless if any external wear/contact is present or not.
I'd say its a warranty issue, between this and the letters coming off. But you won't get a new one. AT&T's policy is that you get a refurb after 14 days of purchase. And I've heard mixed reports on the refurbs (on past devices). Some are indistinguishable from new; while others are beat up, or may even have some hardware issues that weren't fixed properly.
A refurb is exactly what I'm afraid of. I don't want to trade in a phone with cosmetic issues for one with potentially worse issues. Any way of getting them to send a new one? AT&T has been nothing short of great for me in the past but Idk about getting a new phone replacement.

Its not in their policy. But you can always ask . . . than complain, kick and scream, etc.
Its also not in their policy to let folks switch to another brand/model. But I've seen that happen when folks complain enough. Highlight how long you've been a customer, if you have multiple lines, etc. Not sure if they have ever sent out brand new phones for warranty claims. But it sure doesn't hurt to try.
Just thought I'd add, I'm having the exact same issue with the Google Play Edition in a clear TPU case too! Were you using a Spigen case by any chance?

Wow, strange, mine too, exact same case. I took the case off the other day to clean it, it was looking nasty, and sure enough there was like some kind of grit in there. I bet that's what's doing it. Of course that's the least of my worries, it fell out of my pocket and I ran this thing over with my tractor, and crushed the side so far that I had to pry out the volume buttons, they were stuck, lol, had tire marks across the screen even. This thing is a tough phone!

Haha, very nice. Good to hear it'll survive a tractor lol. I feel like I should leave a review on that case. It seems to be flawed if it's allowing grit in. I'd consider my use quite typical, not near any sand or dirt. I'm pretty sure that lost me $100 in resellability.
