[Q] is there possibility of Samsung Best Face, on i717? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

i saw a feature, on a blackberry 10 beta device that took multiple pics in one shot and let you choose the best face pose incase of blinking or whatnot,
now i also noticed that the note 2 has the same feature, but its called "best face"
i was curious if there was anyway to get this on our note i717's?
seeing as we already have 4.2 camera mods, and photosphere mods and such,
really looking forward to seeing this on the note 1

There is an app in the market called fast burst camera that takes multiple pictures one after the other. That might help if best face has not been ported.

Im specifically looking for the best face features, could care less about fast burst camera..
I know about fast burst apps, but i do thank you for your info and response

I thought Canadians were mild and polite.

I myself am very docile.. till you piss me off the wrong way.. then I will rip you a new one from inside out.. lol
So anyone have any idea how to get hands on the best face camera feature?

Who would risk giving you an answer. We come to assist, not get blasted.

Well reason I ask is like I stated in OP that we had already ported the 4.2 camera and various other apks from different devices.. and we managed to get touchwiz working on almost any device.. so I'm wondering if best face is an apk.. a lib file or what.. I'd gladly dissect a note 2 stock ROM file to find out if I could

Ok, the current state of affairs is someone pulled the S3 camera app and tried it, and the frame grab didn't work. The conclusion is library files are also needed but the correct files haven't been found yet. I'm sure when someone gets it done it will be at the top of the theme and app section. Stay tuned or take on the project. For now the Fast Burst camera is spectacular.

They advertise that Best Face on the Note 2 on TV

Isn't the only downfall of Fast Burst Camera that it only takes a max of 3MP?

I've taken a stock galaxy note 2 art ROM and I've dissected it a bit, found some lib files that pertain to the camera, also found the samsungcamera.apk that I believe is what I'm looking for, now.. I just need to figure out what to do with it from here...
Any ideas anyone?

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sonydna.framegrabber
This app will let you grab a frame from a hi-resolution video. It's worth the minute to view the video at the market.

Well so far. Taking the note 2 camera app, gallery, and best face/pose apps and lib files, putting them in the system/app directory has petty much failed... my phone sticks at the Samsung logo on boot even after full wipes and dalvik/cache wipes.. still won't boot.. need to do a full restore to get working again.... I don't know what I'm missing or not doing right.. any ideas anyone?? Can someone maybe pass this on to a dev for advice or more input.. I'd really love to see this working on i717

Yes, I know the problem.
You are attempting to mix different framework pieces together from two different architecture sets.
JB framework on the note2 is very different from anything we currently have for the note 1.
More too the point, the jellybean touchwiz side of the framework.
In addition, the CPU coding is vastly different.
Until we have source code, or a direct port from the note 2, we cannot get working JB note 2 features.
We have managed to pull boot anims, and wallpapers etc. But not much more without source code.
And it will be a great day when the kernel source drops.
Hopefully Samsung will release a JB upgrade for us soon, but I'm not holding my breath.....g

is it worth it to root and upgrade to ics?

I got a 10.1 wifi recently and am wondering if its worth it to root now and get ics installed (with the -of no camera) or to wait untill samsung gets its act together, and get the offical version.
You're asking in an Android Hacking forum, we're all rooted and I'd bet 80% are running ICS .
If you can live without the camera then definitely go for it, if you're comfortable. You could be waiting a while on Samsung, they tend to delay such things.
If do decide to root it, don't be afraid to ask questions here. Welcome to XDA.
I don't know if the question asked is appropriate or a trick question considering this forum is completely dedicated to the benefits of hacking to gain maximum benefit.

It's really not very hard to try it out for yourself and see if you like it. You can always flash back to stock if you need to.
I have CM9 ICS on my personal tablet, but am still using 3.2 on my G-Tab 10.1 because I need the camera for work. I am running the Overcome ROM on it though, which gives me a little more options/flexibility than stock samsung.
but as far as performance, there is little difference between 3.2 HC and ICS (at least at this point). There are some UI differences that I like, but they are minor changes from honeycomb, so don't expect a huge difference on ICS.
Easy answer: yes, it is. And it's very easy to install ics. Just do it and have fun.
Three more questions:
Is there any other bugs besides the camera not working?
And any links to upto date root and ics (i think i read 4.0.4?)?
Is it not possible to get the camera drivers (which from what I have read is the missing link) from the old stock version?
Fyi I have the Samsung 10.1 wifi gt-p7510
Thank you guys already I am not trolling btw i have never rooted/ flash a new operating system on android and kind of afraid of bricking my tablet.

QBKing77 has great video instructions on YouTube, check it out. Very easy. Make sure you do a backup b4 putting a rom on and make sure it's for your Tab. Only issue I have ever had is no camera, but I knew that going in and I use my S2 for pics anyway. We can't get the camera because Sammy will not release the needed info. You can brick your tablet that's a risk but there r ways to unbrick, like I said just make sure the root method and from is for your version of the Galaxy Tab.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 using XDA Premium HD App.
Once rooted you wont look back and its so easy and quick to do. Much more freedom IMO, I started with ICS and its great, but went back to HC just because of the camera. Such a shame, I have htc dhd phone rooted on ics and camera works fine, just a samsung thing.
As said previously, give it a try
Question about rooting what dose it allow you to do?
Rooting allows you to gain access to the system files, lets just say its like your employee ID to get into your company
i rooted my g tab to ics once, i guess it was worth it, but i went back to honeycomb because of the camera.
It's not like camera on a tab plays a great feature, because taking pictures with the tab is like using a laptop to take a 5MP picture.
I'd say I never use the camera on my tab.......... Until I flashed ics then I just kept needing it think it's just a case of wanting what you don't have.. So I'm back to HC.
Is there any good roms out there with the camera working? Sorry for the noob question, Im a new tab owner.

I use the camera with visidon which lets me face lock certain apps, also lets me make video calls and google goggles to translate foreign signs so yeah camera is a must have for me and not necessarily for taking pictures

Sorry to bump this, but I'm curious to know if it's easy to replace the tablet for a decent price? That's really my only concern about rooting my tablet.
Of course it is, you are in the right place
i havent flashed the 10.1 to ICS purely because i use the camera for such things as skype or google hangouts.
so im using overcome rom, but i miss being able to group apps into a folder like ICS can do
ICS Or Not??? That is the Question!!!!
Over the last 6 months I have tried every ROM listed for the Galaxy Tab here on XDA, including ICS. I must say ICS offers better battery life, faster processing and better visuals, but I am like a few others and need the camera so I am sticking with Galaxy Task Rom. Out of all of them it is the most stable, and fastest giving me Quadrant Scores of just under 3100. Using ICS I was closer to 3600 and I thought at one point hit 3800, but I think that was a fluke, but then I had no camera, so back to 3.2. For me I have compiled the best apps I could to make my tablet a screamer.....If you have any others please let me know.
Galaxy Task
OC 1.4 Pershoot Kernel (is there a 1.5 or 1.6)
Swapper File @ 500mb (app)
SD Speed Boost set at 4000 (app)
Volume + set on Beats Emulation with +10 speaker increase (app)
Poweramp for a 10 band equalizer for great sound (app)
Now using the same apps with ICS made it ultra fast. But I wish the camera worked.
Definately appreciate everyone on here with their input.....my knowledge is only as good as flashing and recovery, but am trying to learn more as I move forward. Love the Galaxy Tab, it is my 10th tablet I have owned and my favorite. Now I have to figure out how to flash my Atrix 2 phone........love this site!!!!
Quick ques about ICS Roms [from what I've seen in Cm9/Muiu]
1. can you change screen mode [dynamic/movie/normal]
2. change font styles?
I don't remember seeing these options, but it was about a month ago when I flashed these Roms?

CM9 on GS3 features?

I know CM9 nightlies have started rolling out for the american GS3 but i wanted to know if features like smartstay and camera burst mode have remained. These 2 features i would give up even for CM. Also besides that, anything else has changed from lets say the CM9 i had on my skyrocket?

CM9 is mostly universal across all devices..it is pure, vanilla Android, how Google designed in. So no, it will not have any Samsung added on features, including smartstay or camera burst.
well then, no CM9 for me! Unless someone releases a CWm flashable zip to add those features
I don't think that's possible as those features require touchwiz to operate.

"Smart Stay" has already been replicated by a 3rd-party app call ISeeYou, which I'll probably install once I flash CM10, since it'll probably NEVER make it into CM proper.
And as far as burst mode goes, there's many other camera apps to choose from if you want that. Personally, I rarely ever find a use for burst (though, I admit i thought it was neat that it picked out the "best" pic from 8 burst pics i took of my kid throwing water up in the air)

i always use burst...only when i need flash i dont. I like th fact that i have 8 versions of the same pic and i can make sure nobody has they eyes closed or some kind of other that would ruin my picture.
I guess ill have to stick with stock this time, anyways, with a good launcher, its not like if its that bad. Just waiting for a one click root so i can freeze some apps

Hi guys,
didn´t find another thread regarding CM9 focussing on the camera issue ... so ... I´ve installed CM9 07/16/2012 having still the camera issue after installing the files from 07/12/2012 (and setting the perms to the correct settings). Does anyone has the same problem and solved it? I´m using a AT&T SGH-I747. Help is appreciated.

Remap the shutter button?

Hi guys I'd like to change the shutter button so I can better take underwater pictures. My phones rooted on ics any apps you can suggest that'll help?
Sent from my ST27i using xda premium
Well to answer my own question and unashamedly get enough posts to give feedback to the various devs whose threads have helped me.....
I've swapped to a Samsung Galaxy S III Mini because changing network provider to get unlimited tethering they gave me the phone free. To be fair it makes the Sony Go seem a bit rubbish but I did enjoy the ride!
This was my first Android phone and I was determined to root it and put a custom Rom in it but I had an un-unlockable bootloader so life was pretty difficult. I could run someone through it though if they are stuck in a similar way.
The Cyanogen Rom came with the camera button remapped and underwater pictures of coi carp turned out pretty cool. I had some trouble with GPS and WiFi connection sometimes taking an absolute age even after a restart.
I ended up using the JB Experience Rom by Divkash. Although it didn't have the remapped camera button it ran very smooth and had loads of cool options in the drop down menu. Most of which come as standard on the GS3 Mini though.
So that's all I know. There is probably a way to flash the modded camera onto any Rom but I don't know enough about it.
Oh forgot to mention the Cyanogen Rom has the coolest spinning blue man animation on boot and it's almost worth installing the Rom just for that.

So who still checks this Forum ? ( ********* PLEASE READ ******** )

I know this device is old.. its the only one I have right now and have no clue if i'd ever get the money to upgrade.. just curious how many people still check this forum or if i'm one of the only few...
Also if you are a typical visitor.. maybe post up so I can get to know this Note II community.
Thanks!
interesting.. 10 views already and no votes or posts... lol..
i see it has 23 views.. and 2 responses. Great! so there is still some life here. Are any developers still here?
I still use this device for gaming only. I play Underworld Empire via WiFi/mobile hotspot. Have multiple toons in the games . It is rooted and running TeamOctos MM weekly build rom.
I use my old Note II as a training device for my 6 year old. The thing is a tank.

Not sure if there is any that hangs around this forum. TeamOctos has their rom on their own website, I'm glad they still make weekly builds for this phone. Runs pretty smoothly for me.

First Off, thanks for the response!
Second, Yeah i would love to go with a newer weekly build and version of android.. .. but I just really like to have screen options to turn screen off, bring up power menu, and have options for screenshot and screen record. I had forgotten about the power of XPosed Framework ( which R3D utilizes ) and perhaps that could help make OCTos more useful for me..
I also do like some of the touchwiz features that I can use with the S-Pen.. so i'm torn.. LOL
I have xposed installed along with TeamOctos, gravity box mm module installed. Since TeamOctos rom have most of the features, I scantily use the gravity box options. Don't wanna break anything lol. I find the s-pen was more a gimmick than anything else. The capacitive buttons don't work with the pen, have to manually press with finger (this was fixed with the Note 3, which I sold). Also there are 3rd party apps that can do just about the same as the Samsung spen apps.

yeah i was using that for a little bit.. but I noticed the overall sound volume seemed to be lower... when I went back to 4.4.2 , i could really hear the difference... i'm not sure if that is a AOSP issue or what.. do you notice it?
Yes unfortunately it is because of AOSP. I remember having to manually editing a mixer.xml file to increase the volume but still wasn't close to the sound level of TW rom. I got use to the low lvls after a while.
Now I don't use it as my daily driver so sound isn't really an issue anymore. Performance and battery life is what I'm looking for so it's ideal.

Ahh ok thank you. that makes me feel a lot better to know it wasn't just me that noticed it and that it wasn't directly related to my phone or my flash status...
so I guess its not an easy fix or even possible since it wasn't addressed when this phone was still being developed... darn..
I really don't recall what the reasoning was, if it was due to drivers or software. It can be remedied by editing the sound file, I believe someone has done it with this phone. Do a post search for low sound or mixer.xml on here.
Haha not trying to sell AOSP roms or anything but I find them more useful with their options. Isn't that the main reason people use Android phones, for their customization?

HA yes.. but i guess for those of us that don't have multiple phones to try out different ROMs and updates :silly: constantly have to find the happy medium between stability, functionality and customization.. Right now i'm gonna stick with TW 4.4.2 (at least on my Note II) since I need to have these things on my phone for me to use it as a daily driver:
1. Stable (won't freeze up / random reboots / random power offs / FC'ers)
2. Camera - Camera must be able to take great photos (at least as good as the physical camera is)
3. Sound - Must have great sounding audio for voice calls / speakerphone / ringtones and for media watching
4. Functional - Must be able to not miss calls / notifications or messages and connect to data for internet
5. Battery - Battery must be decent to good.. want it to be able to last at least 1 day of medium to heavy use..

You are correct there. I could not find it either myself. I wonder if TeamOctos even included it in their build for this phone. I checked with another phone of mine (LG G3) thats running the same ROM. It has the mixer_paths.xml in the folder system/ETC. May have to contact them to find out why... Sorry, like I've mentioned, I don't use my Note II as a daily driver so haven't had the need to increase the sound levels. I wonder if its possible to just copy the file from another ROM?

right now i think ill stay with a 4.4.2 rom and use xposed to get the features i like. do wish i had 6.0 but have to be happy with what i got. ?
Sorry I couldn't have been more helpful. Hope things will look up for you and that you may be able to afford a newer phone. This years phone releases haven't been all the great, maybe next year will see some really great improvements. The biggest thing is the battery life in most cell phones nowadays (unless you have removable option). Manufacturers will never give you a better battery/longer life because they want consumers to keep buying newer phones. Batteries usually only have a lifetime of about ~1.5 years, the more you charge, the less it will hold a charge. Forces people to buy new phones

yeah true.. and for me its difficult because i'm fairly picky with what I want in the phone... seems like i haven't actually found a "perfect" one yet... several will have 80 to 90% but some will be missing 1 major thing i want.. and then i have to decide how important that is... So far from all the phones i had.. I think my Nexus 5 would probably me my all time favorite... of course I would have preferred an AMOLED display, front facing speakers and better cameras... but again.. had to pick and choose... the HTC 10 was amazing as well.. but I did have some issues with my LTE signal dropping.. so not sure if it was a fluke or because of my Total Wireless service? maybe the ROM.. idk.. LOL
Hmm favorite all time, may have to go with my Note 3 til I sold it. Had it with Verizon, unfortunately the bootloader was locked and when I updated to Jasmine rom, screwed up and lost root. It was a great phone, s pen is so useful, removable battery, amoled display, SD card slot. Camera was alright, my V10 excels in that department! I'm with T-mobile now, service is great for where I need it and their phones are mostly bootloader unlocked. Can easily root them.
Watching Floss Carter on YouTube, with his review of HTC 10. His biggest negative factor is that the phone is too small for him. Everything else is good, he even mentions that HTC should've made two options like HTC 10 and 10+.
His top 5 phones:
1: Note 5
2: Nexus 6p
3: iPhone 6s+

potential new phone

I'm thinking about buying a new phone I currently have the pixel XL and I'm conflicted between the S9+ and the pixel2/3 so I came here to see what the S9 is like I loved Samsung when I had the S5 but it had some problems and I was curious if they were fixed
1. Does the keyboard lag insanely after about a few months?
2 can you use something other than TouchWiz on Samsung?
3. Is it easy to root?
4. How is the development for it? Is there a lot of development as far roms and kernels etc etc?
5. can you unlock the bootloader?
6. how is the speed and camera?
7. would you recommend it?

Ususaly i like to assist users if i can, but now i say that you better do your own homework and learn something along the way. All your questions can be easily answered if you use XDA and Google or YouTube.

1) That happens?
2)Yes, there a plenty of custom launchers, but its not TouchWiz anymore and its far closer to stock google. Well, as close to stock as Samsung goes. Think HTC Sense and then add a bit more stuff to it. Just a little.
3)Not tried, but I would imagine theres a way to do it written in the forums
4)Its still a pretty new phone (only just a couple of month I think?) So I imagine people are working on plenty. Keep checking back, I suppose, would be my advice
5)Never tried on a Samsung. I just know that you can flash things either using ODIN, or using TWRP if you have that flashed.
6)Both amazing. A lot of people say that the camera doesnt quite match up to the Pixel 2, but for me the difference is so little its not even worth caring about.
7) Yes.
Think so far is the best phone you can buy. If I need to point out a flaw for me and a few some could be the battery but no stopped apps and slow downs or heat up nice and smooth love there launcher swipe up and app draw pops up nice.

Yeah my s5 was SO laggy no matter what I did, clearing the cache factory resetting etc etc nothing helped it, I would click to bring up the keyboard and it would take a minute or two to come up and that's not an exaggeration lol the same thing happened with my girlfriend who had the same phone, I looked it up and it looks like some people have the same issue on the s8 I figure it might not be enough time for it to appear on the 9+ but thanks for the info
I saw awhile ago that Samsung refuses to allow things to be flashed on their devices unless they're signed by them like roms and things so that effectively killed Odin, I'm not sure if they changed it or if people found a workaround or not, I guess I'll just have to surf the forums a little bit to find out

Get yourself a package disabler (root is not required for some) from the Play Store if you buy this phone, you can disable a lot of services and preinstalled apps to keep your phone fast and snappy.
