Yesterday, I traded my wife's razr for a purple razr. It was a straight up trade on Craigslist. Seemed legit at the time. As soon as I drove away, I noticed the 4g kept dropping. I had to toggle airplane mode to get it to come back,... and then I just dropped signal again. It does it constantly. If I change it to 3g only, it works fine, it just doesn't like being on 4g at all. Anyways, I texted the guy back and of course he never replied.
So I went to Verizon yesterday, thinking that maybe the sim went bad when we swapped phones. A new sum didn't make a difference. Well, the girl in the store said it was a warranty issue and that she would send us a new one on Tuesday. I even told her it wasn't the original razr we bought. I told her of the trade. She still said it was a warranty issue. At first I thought it was cool... get a new phone out of it. However, now im wondering - if I do send this razr back, and the imei numbers don't match the original razr, then would I end up being charged for a whole new phone?
At this point on just thinking of sending the replacement back and just buying a new (used) phone.
Anyone have any idea how the warranty works? Is it just on the original phone purchased? What's my best way out of this mess?

That's what I'm leaning towards. Im just confused about the girl at Verizon telling me that its still covered under warranty? I thought used phones weren't warrantied.

If you have Total Equipment Coverage they will warranty a used phone under most circumstances, oddly enough.

We do have the phone insured, and come to think of it, the Verizon rep did look up our info and she said that since we did have insurance we get free expedited shipping. ...maybe I'm not screwed. I didn't realize insurance even covered a used phone.

If the phone is in good condition it might still be covered under the default manufactures warranty providing its not a dev phone. One year is minimum in Moor countries.

Just send it back. You have a one year warranty no matter what. Nothing is going to happen I've sent verizon worse stuff under warranty and they never charged me anything.

As long as the phone itself is still in one ýear warranty your fine cause they send ít to a company that doesn't čáře who bought they just čáře that they get paid

I say don't worry. You may be over-thinking on this issue.
just relax and do the swap with vzw since even they suggested so.
something unusual happened to me too.i bought my razr on craigslist too and they sent me a letter to offer me insurance and extended warranty. i called them and they told me they are doing that with 2 years old or less phones no matter where you bought it.today i still having insurance and warranty.

Or you could always download the RAZR 4g connectivity fixer app from the market. Mine did that after a CL deal and that fixed the 4g right away

Thanks. I have been over thinking it. Never really had a warranty issue with a phone.
I tried the Motor connectivity app and it was worthless.
Anyways, I just wanna say thanks for all the replies. Its so cool to have such a huge database of knowledgeable people.

I've got my old thunderbolt rooted running thundershed 1.6 CM7, my friend needs a phone to use for a few days until the new battery for her droid incredible 2 comes in. Am i able to just swap out the sim cards and activate her number on the phone without unrooting? I'd rather not have to go through all that hassle if its only going to be for a few days. Any help quickly would be appreciated
I don't know if activating on cm7 is possible but you can activate the phone while it is rooted. Maybe make a nandroid backup and switch to a stock sense rom to activate the phone and restore back afterwards. You will need the new sim and you will need to have them call Verizon to activate the sim. Do not dial *228 it can screw a thunderbolt up big time.
Sent from my Thunderbolt using Tapatalk 2
Thanks for the quick response I figured i probably couldn't on CM7 but wasn't sure since i've never had to do this before lol. Does her getting a sim cost any money or is it simply just going to verizon and asking for one? I ask because her current phone is an Incredible 2 with a verizon vodafone sim card in it right now.
No that kind of sim is different. That is a GSM sim. The thunderbolt needs an lte sim. You can order them over the phone through customer service which is what I do. Usually takes two days if you get them during the week. If you order on a Friday you'll get it on Monday. If you get one from the store make sure it is a corporate Verizon store or they will try to charge you for it. I say it is better to do it over the phone yourself because at the store the rep is going to want to handle your phone and if you don't want them to know it is rooted then I wouldn't suggest that unless you just don't care.
Sent from my Thunderbolt using Tapatalk 2
But really they don't care, hell they're either afraid to root or root themselves (speaking from lots of experience), but they don't like make a note of it and damn your warranty.
They also have no idea that you can unroot and make it look as though you never rooted.... boy.

Although all this is true it is still not worth the risk. They can note your account though and when you try getting a warranty replacement charge you hundreds of dollars for a replacement when they see you don't have one. I have heard of people that were charged after sending a phone in for warranty replacement and they noticed it was rooted.

So I have Verizon Wireless and I am eligible for an upgrade now.
I want to pick up this phone and I am looking to spend about 199.99 with a new 2yr activation with the renewal of my contract.
I am trading in my old HTC Rezound at best buy which is ROOTED and FLASHED for $50 plus best buy is offering a $50 gift card towards the purchase of any Samsung Mobile phone I am told.
Does anyone recommend any other tips or suggestions possibly before purchasing and renewing my contract with Verizon and/or purchasing the phone at best buy?
I would greatly appreciate it thanks!
I look forward to possibly start making this THREAD my new home.

You know you could get more if you sold the rezound. Also in the next week you could get the s4 in 32GB version you may want to think about that. Buying from best buy is better then at VZW they price match Amazon and wirefly sometimes. I know because they have done it for me. And you get 30 days return and exchange. I also don't think they charge an upgrade fee which is $35 at VZW.

There is still an upgrade fee that gets tacked on to the first months bill. You also only now get 15 days to exchange or return (unless you're platinum) but still have to do so within Verizon's 14 day grace period to get the upgrade back. Their protection plan is good though despite what some people say... Quick unlimited replacements with no deductible and the majority of employees couldn't tell the phone was rooted even if the damn thing was stuck in the cm boot loop so no worries there

Yeah my phone is rooted and I can't sell it because some of the hardware has gone bogus and malfunctions. So HOPEFULLY when I trade it in at best buy they don't give me grief for it being rooted and flashed.

Yes they will replace it
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Do they replace it in store? Or should I plan on being without a device for a bit while a replacement ships?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Depends on availability and what their pos system says
Edit: they'll give you a loaner phone if they have to ship you a new one
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
Typically takes 1-3 business days. They offer you a loaner if you need, but it's usually a dumb phone. If you have an unused handset, they'll even switch your service over to it for you, instead, and they set up the new phone again when it arrives. No problem with water damage or anything. No limit on number of claims (my wife has tested both). Only real limitation is that they won't replace it if you lose it. Even a baggie of recognizable parts should suffice. I'll never use Verizon insurance again, and now buy all my phone through best buy.
Wow that is awesome. I'm glad I paid the 130 or so when I got this device.

This is NOT true.
The insurance you have will transfer over to your new phone. I picked up a couple of S4's for my parents a week ago and the insurance stayed on their lines. It did this automatically once the phones were activated.

Great question! Your coverage is on the line, not the specific device. While we do cover the device active on the line at the time of peril, keep in mind you may be asked for a proof of purchase should you need to file a claim. We welcome you to review the terms and conditions of your coverage at phoneclaim. com. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. Thanks!

Not so sure of that. I latched on to mine via Craigslist. Happened to be a Verizon employee with an upgrade due and wanted some cash so I ended up with a brand new S4 and transfered my SIM from my Droid Razr Maxx to it and activated it. And whatever he did to help me with this process, was able to transfer my existing Asurion ins. to it.

Purchasing from a third party does come with inherent risks. For this reason, we encourage our customers to purchase directly from the carrier. Hmmm... Is it just me that's thinking this... but when we include #xdaforum in a message... they would know that we're rooted/modded and then decline the claim? I think everyone is pretty much rooted and their devices are modified in some kind of way. Nice try though...

Actually I just called Verizon directly and explained the situation. They informed me that I am still covered under Asurion Insurance and it was simply a transfer from my previous device to this one SINCE my S4 was in a brand new state and I am the only one that ever activated via it's MIED # or whatever. Now for someone purchasing a "Used" device off ebay, craigslist, ect... the former issue of no coverage would be true in their case.
