[Q] Can I backup my data from bircked phone? - HTC EVO 3D

My phone is bricked, My backup is corrupted and I have almost a years worth of data on my phone such as all my scores and coins from games and downloads and picturemail and unsaved phone numbers. Can someone please tell me if it is possible to get any of my game data off of the phone before I wipe and put a new ROM on it?

What do you mean, bricked? Have you tried wiping cache and dalvik and fixing permissions?

If I wipe the cache and check fix permissions wont that erase my data? Check out my other post by the way, it should be above this one.

Umm, have you read the forum rules? There is no need for THREE threads dealing with the same problem....

Also, going through your other thread, you say the phone is stuck on the Sprint screen. Well, if you read the FIRST line in the thread of the fix you were trying to do, it says "THIS IS FOR METROPCS USER WItH EVO 3D NOT FOR SPRINT USERS!!!" I'm no genius, but that could be why it's bricked.
And lastly, if you made a backup with Clockwork, then all your data is there. You can always extract it. That is why you make backups.

First of all, I am using a flashed phone with Metro PCS and I am using a stock rom for sprints Ice Cream Sandwich, so naturally its going to use the traditional sprint loading screen. Second of all, I backed up my data with Clockwork mod and when I went to restore, I always get an md5 checksum error and I looked into the back up folder and it was set to backup using the .dup file extension rather than .tar I dont know if that matters but what I do know is, there was no nandroid.md5 file ever created, just the three image files and the .dup file and in the backup folder and I guess since it was using .dup format, it put the bulk of the data in blobs folder, because that folder has 1,141 folders in it with a large amount of data. So if no md5 file was created, why would clockworkmod ask for it in restore? why has no one told me how to disable md5 checksum? I have downloaded a nandroid md5 file offline, edited it with note pad and made sure there were no spaces in the folders or file names and made sure to create an md5 checksum with RapidCRC ro assign its checksum to the right images and put it in the back up directory and still nothing works. I am sorry to be so desperate, but I work from home and need my phone, and I have been with out one for almost half a day. I dont have a car, I live in the stix and if something was to happen to me I would have no way of notifying anyone in time. So Im sure you can understand how I have come to this point in desperation and I just need help getting my phone to work! I can and will abide by the rules but the situtation I am is not good and I need some good answers and have been geting the run-around all day so can you understand that?

Last idea for u: 4ext can restore clockwork backups. My 4ext backups are in the clockwork folder (even though i never had clockwork). Just flash 4ext and they will show up. Try that
BTW if remove the checksums 4ext will continue without them

I did try to help, but it's hard when people don't give all the information we need to help them. And making three threads on one topic is only hurting his chances of getting it fixed, and it's against the rules for a reason.

I'll go ahead and get a couple things out of the way that other people will probably tell you about with varying levels of aggravation (don't shoot the messenger, I couldn't care less):
This is a question. It goes in Q & A. The development forum is for development.
Odin is a dangerous tool, and you have to be careful with it.
If your MEID number is still valid in Settings -> About Phone -> Status -> MEID, then you are probably ok.
You may be able to *228, option 1. If that doesn't do it, try *22899.
If that doesn't work, activate an old phone on your account, then after a few minutes, reactivate your Samsung Fascinate. This will hopefully restore any of the EFS data that wasn't getting pushed by the *228 activation.
If your MEID in the Settings menu doesn't match the one printed on your phone under the battery, then the EFS data was corrupted and unable to rebuild after you cleared it. The only realistic option at that point is having it sent to Samsung.
thanks gizmo

Well, he deleted the OP that made it a little clearer... He actually cleared the EFS.
The phone section in ODIN is just a specialized field for flashing a radio file (PDA is like an all purpose). At least, this is what I gather from other's experiences. (Fully admitting that I have a bad memory).
But the "Phone EFS Clear" checkmark is for clearing the efs partition so that it will rebuild the files that contain your MEID number. It also clears the information that is pushed to your phone during activation.
Given that everything was set up properly, he should be ok after activating again... but that's not always the case. If you clear the EFS data and the files that repopulate the data with your MEID are corrupted, then there is no way to regenerate that info without shipping your phone to Samsung.
Given that no one much talks about the EFS partition on the Fascinate, I've only learned this info from the other Galaxy S variants, where backing up the EFS is a major first step before changing anything.
There is a small possibility that these principles don't apply to the SF, but I'm thinking that until someone proves otherwise, it's better safe then sorry.
OP el-solve-ed his problem. Thread closed.

Trying to salvage some data from a nandroid that wont restore.

Ive been spending way to much time researching my problem and my wife is really mad at me. Basically at this point i would be happy to just manually extract data for about 10 apps from a nandroid that wont restore. Can someone point me in the right direction please?
Edit:
Ok, now that I am at computer, heres my story. Prior to flashing the gingerbread leak, I backed up using Titanium Backup and made a Nandroid backup. Somehow, all the files backed up in my PREVIOUS 2 backups on titanium backup where all 0kb-10kb, so they were completely borked for some reason. Some old backups of apps that I have since uninstalled still remained and those seem ok.
Prior to reading about the SD card failures with the gingerbread leak, I backed up my SD card to my computer. Only 1 error came up during the backup about a file with a name that was too long. I clicked on ignore and finished the backup. About 1 hour later my SD card fried.
I used a spare sd card, and transfered my clockwork mod folder and a few other folders to it. I then ODIN a DL09 stock image, flashed the newest Clockword mod 3.xx via odin, flashed UKB 2.0, then flashed PBJ -50 recovery/kernel (which was what I had when I made the backup) and tried to restore it. When I try to restore it hangs somewhere in the data restore portion saying CACHE. I saw it flash cache a few times during the restore, so I am not sure why it hangs on that one in particular. I know that the cache image file is only 16.5kb so I dont know if that has something to do with it.
I then installed the newest IMNUTS recovery since I heard there were problems restoring the the PBJ recovery, and it seems to hang in the same spot.
At this point, I have a few of my old programs back, but most force close.
My main goal here is to just extract some gamesave progress and a few other pieces of data (I can redownload basically all the apps I need), run clean until a better gingerbread leak comes along, then use titanium backup to backup what I have (and verify the backups and make backups of the backups )and install a better gingerbread rom.
So anyway, If i can figure out how to go into the datadata.img files, I guess I can extract the data I need and push it through ADB or ROOT EXPLORER? Should that work?
- nevermind...
There are computer applications that can read and explore image files, or .img files, and the file systems within image files. Your best bet would be software like that, that could open, edit, and explore image files. I dont know the names of any software like that, even though I have come across some before, but im sure you could turn up some results with the query "image file editor," or ".img file editor." From there you're just have to feel your way through.. Try similar queries if those don't turn up what you need, etc. If you got an app that could explore image files, then you could get your .apk files from /data/app folder, and any other data you might need from /data/data, if its just user apps you're wanting to restore.
Sent by way of unspeakably black magic.

Well I'll go ahead and point you to the right direction, or what I'd imagine should work for your needs. You'll need unyaffs, I'm assuming you're on windows so this here would be the right one for you http://www.box.net/shared/1eighqsh4s. Now take the data.img from your clockwork backup on your sdcard, drag and drop it onto the unyaffs.exe, it should unpack right there into a crapload of files. Navigate to the /data folder and find the ones you want to keep (they should be listed by the package name for the apps, "com.blah.asfkje.etc" rather than the name of the app so keep that in mind when looking for what you want), then adb push (root explorer would be fine too) the folders into your phone where they should be.

Another Fascinating post by my XDA app...
Just curious because of my personal interest...
Did you happen to try the nandroid Advanced Restore option, and select Data only? If not, it might be worth a shot. If it gets far enough, you might try wiping after the restore, and before booting up.
I always wipe my cache/Dalvik before I backup, to try to avoid conflicts with possible future ROMs. Something to think about, anyway.
Sorry about the trouble.

I dont use an Evo 3d so I don't know, does he need a specific 4ext for the Evo 3d? could you possibly supply a link he can read up on to use 4ext? He can restore his back up but not everything from his backup he made, the phone will boot and everything its not just the way he backed it up, when it boots its like he booted into a fresh install. He basically wants all his game data and text messages and customizations etc. back the way he had when he made the back up.

a simple search on XDA turned this link up. install any old ROM, install the free 4ext app, and use the app to install the 4ext recovery. After that, reboot and try to restore your backup.
In the future, use the app called Titanium Backup to backup all your apps and data, so that if anything like this happens again, you can easily install a new ROM, then restore each one of your apps and all of your data. Good luck OP.

Old question but i was struggling with this problem myself today as my samsung galaxy trend plus+clockwork mod refused to
recover any backup images by saying "md5 mismatch error" on every image.
The solution is very simple and doesnt require any adb debugging..
edit "nandroid.md5" file in the backup directories, clear all the text and save it as empty.
Do NOT delete the file, but instead save it as empty or if it doesn't exist, create the file and leave it empty.
then try restoring the backups, clockwork mod will bypass the md5 check, and restore the backup.
I'm sorry I don't have cwm.... But any recovery I've used has had an option to disable the check in the advanced settings.

Format Internal memory

Hi everyone
Right before finally updating to JB, I would like to delete EVERYTHING from the internal memory.
I have too many folders that came with apps that I deleted months ago, but I don't know which are those and which are suppose to be there.
How can I delete EVERYTHING before flashing the new JB?
Thank you

All right...
I did factory reset in the past and it did not delete all folders.
When I emphasized EVERYTHING, I thought I made it clear that I want everything gone.
anyway... I already installed JB and it didn't erase anything of course.
I would be thankful if anyone could at least tell me where I can find a list of folders that come with the phone, so I won't delete important folders.
If your phone is rooted/has CWM, boot into CWRecovery & format cache, data, system, & internal sd card. Be warned, once you do this, you will need to flash a stock rom via Odin after. In the event Odin does not play nice with your phone, search. It's almost always something really obvious stopping it from working (I won't be answering any posts from you saying 'Help ! Odin doesn't work').
From there you'll have a 'clean' setup to flash whatever you want on.
Do not 'find a list of folders' and start deleting stuff from your existing setup; there's a fair chance you'll end up deleting something important & bork it.

Flash custom kernel like Siyah via CWM or ODIN.
Reboot into recovery.
Flash kernel cleaning script.
Format internalsd card (or /emmc)
Format external if needed.
Now flash custom rom via recovery or reboot into download mode and flash rom via ODIN. (As mentioned above do not ask how, plenty of info on this).

Going from Stock to CM. Storage vanishes.

I'm trying to set up my girlfriends S3, but I have an issue.
When on stock rom, I can see the titanium backup folder with all the backups. In fact all the folders are there, SMS backups, images etc.
Since going to Cm10.1, the folders are gone. I used droid explorer to see if I've missed it. I made a folder in Cm10 called tester.
It appears 3 times now. And I have no idea where all my other files are. It's like it's blank.
But, if I restore back to stock, it's all there. Annoying.
I only installed 1 custom ROM. From what I know, you have to wipe your phone completely before the flashing process. I have smooth ROM installed on my nexus 7, works perfectly!
So I THINK if you want to install a custom ROM the right way, you have to wipe anyway..
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
The thing is, this worked before. I had a slight problem finding the files, but I have installed CM before on this, and never had this issue.
I could copy the files to my PC, wipe the phone and copy them back, but if I have to restore to the stock backup I made, it's going to break a lot of things surely?

It worked great. But there is one issue. Titanium backup works great, but if I connect my phone to PC, the storage is the blank set of folders. Gallery cannot find any pictures either. I've followed the instructions to the letter.
If I open File Manager, it shows me the 0 directory full of my files as it should, but on my PC or in the gallery it finds nothing but empty folders.
Try wiping data on the gallery app, in case something was restored from titanium perhaps.
I don't connect to a Windows PC regularly myself, so I'm not sure about that one. Have you rebooted since?

Wiping gallery data did the trick, thanks. Not sure why connecting to the pc shows empty folders.
It means I Can't save my camera photos, or add new roms to install in the future. Most puzzling.

Infact reboot the PC too, whilst not connected to each other.
Sorry, yes I have. In fact, going into recovery after following the instructions and my backups are no there. Or rather "no files found". Using CWM Recovery v6. I've also lost my sms backup files. I can't even go back to stock if I wanted to.

As per my other thread, some recoveries still use the old location /data/media (which is really poor from those recoveries). To be clear, this is the recoveries fault for not keeping up with the times.
If you needed to restore from one of those recoveries, you would need to move the clockworkmod folder back. Or you could flash Philz recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2002953
...which has a toggle to change to /data/media/0 to pick up 4.2 locations.
So to be clear, you have not lost anything. Everything is there. I don't know what sms backup app you have, but everything should just work. The apps all look for /sdcard (so they don't need to know if it is /data/media or /data/media/0) so as long as your data is in the right place, there shouldn't be an issue.
Some of these issues you're having (forgetting recovery) could be a result of a titanium backup restore. Perhaps you need to wipe the device from recovery and get things working without data that could be skewing the truth
