You flashed a kernel after unlocking, right?
Did you unlock using the tool or sony's official?
Search for a kernel for your software version (if you were on ics an ics kernel, gingerbread gb kernel) and you have the boot.img. Now take the battery of the phone, wait a few seconds, insert it again, hold volume up, connect the usb while holding volume up, the blue led will light
Now open flashtool - click the flash - fastboot mode - select the downloaded boot.img - wait until flashing ends - unplug phone and start it :good:

Dear friend
You need not have to worry just download cm9 stable version. Extract its kernel on your desktop which is boot.img and copy cm9 zip in SD card
Now connect your phone: in PC in fastboot mode and flash cm9 kernel you will find your mobile will boot up with FXP then instal cm9 with cwm

Dear All,
I have a Sony Xperia U (European).
I used the update service to first competely update the phone to stock 4.0.4 (6.1.1.B.1.54)
Then I did the procedure to get the key and unlock the bootloader. That all worked fine.
Then I tried to do the root of the backup and restore. But I understand that doesn't work anymore.
So I found the following:
1. Flash ics 6.1.1.b.1.10 Kernel
2. Root with flashtools
3. Flash ics 6.1.1.b.1.54 Kernel
I have the drivers installed from the Flashtool folder. And the fastboot mode and flashboot drivers work in order.
After flashing the older kernel with the Flashtool the phone reboots and after that I when it boots everything become distorted and unresponsive.
I can see part of the OS and try to touch and 'something' will happen. But it doesn't seem to be normal.
The only thing I can do then is use the flashtool to relock the bootloader and then the update service to reflash back to stock again.
I have first search the whole subforum and read everything. But I can't seem to fine something about this.
Am I missing something?
The screen does go dark and awful using the older kernel. Just let it take its time to load and u can just about make out the screen to use the root tool. Although.... If you're bootloader unlocked just fastboot an auto rooting kernel

Phone Died?
Well for some reason the phone doesn't turn on anymore.
I thought I 'overdrained' it, so I put it all night long to charge it. But this morning still the same and it won't turn on.
The small red led just right of the camera lits up when I connect the charger so he sees something but what?
Cannot get in flash or fastboot mode. However sometimes I see the phone out of itself turn on the illumination bar (green) for just a few seconds.
The phone itself does nothing. But I'm thinking of a brick, unless someone else has some ideas?
Take these steps...may help

Try this...
1. Take out the battery and sim and leave it for minutes...then take in the sim and then battery.
2. connect the phone to a charger and wait for minimum 25 seconds and see what happenes...if some positive response you get...leave it charging as it is for some time minimum half hour.
[Before doing 3rd step download latest stock firmware 6.1.1.C.1.0 for your phone.(Please be sure for thats a stock original firmware)] - Search It-> [Stock ROM] Firmware 6.1.1.C.1.0 FTF ICS Xperia U - T-Mobile (Croatia)
3. connect your phone with the pc in flashmode and flash this firmware.
4. After flashing Restart the phone and wait for the setup and then you get then the power off button on your mobile screen, power off it.
5. Download TheBrains Recovery - Search it [Its a kernel having CWM Recovery Prerooted]
6. Now connect your phone in fastboot mode [While connecting your phone to pc press and hold Volume Up button]
7. Select a kernel to flash [Kernel that you downloaded just now]
8. After flashing unplug usb and restart your phone, when Sony logo appears and phone vibrates press Volume Up button again and again then you will come to CWM Recovery Menu.
9. Then from recovery wipe cache. and wipe dalvich cache [In advance option]
10. Now restart your phone and wait...and leave it for 5 mins.
11. Now your phone is updated and prerooted safely and smoothly... and yes ready for installing any stock based ROM or Custom ROM[which are based on latest C.1.0 firmware].

Thanks for your input.
Unfortunately I cannot do step 3.
He just will not go into flashmode, tried different cables but that doesn't work. He won't go into fastboot either.
I've taken out the battery and sim for 5 days. Just to be sure . But I'm thinking it's bricked. This has never happened to me before.
I have unlocked and flashed many phones (mostly HTC's and Samsungs), but this is a first with Sony, hmm and first time a brick.

I had the same problem while rooting my phone too.
Follow These:
1.Install the latest PC Companion on your computer. It auto updates if you have it installed on your computer.
2.Download the kernels 6.1.b.1.10 and 6.1.b.1.54 and Flashtool. Make sure you have usb debugging on even before you flash the kernels.
3. With the help of flashtool flash your phone on .10 kernel reboot. The launcher might turn black and become unresponsive so enable usb debugging before flashing itself.
4. Start your phone after flashing .10 and connect to your computer.
5.Start Bin4ry v17 or v18. It a cmd file developed by a dev on xda. Just search for it. Rooting via flashtool wont work. Use Bin4ry
6. Press 1 and follow the steps. after the phone finishes rooting it it'll restart and confirm it.
7. Switch off your phone and flash 54 kernel
8. Pretty sure it'll work!

This means that you deleted the whole system because it happened to me before. Download the stock ROM of your mobile and follow these steps:
1. Open Flashtool and press on FLASH (the one with the lightning).
2. Choose Flashmode.
3. Select the ROM and press on ok. If you get ERROR, try to clean up some memory on your disk.
4. keep holding the -volume button.
5. Plug your mobile on to the computer quickly before it boots up.
6. After flashing is DONE, Unplug your mobile from the computer and turn it on. It may take 2 minutes or more to boot up, so don't worry.
7. Your mobile now is stock as new, so it is not rooted and the bootloader is also locked i think.

Firstly try charging your battery using some other phone or some chargers where u can just insert battery(doesn't cost much) and then keep the battery for 15 sec(without connecting to charger or mobile)...now let's start from beginning....re-insert your battery and connect ur phone in flashmode and flash stock firmware...after that turn USB debugging, msc mode and unknown sources(just to be on safe side) then reflash the kernel using fastboot, hold vol up and connect to pc(obviously u might be on unlocked bl to do all this...) and then flash the ROM(u might have placed in ur sdcard) with correct wipes and boot it....
Just an advice: after u install the Rom go to launcher, then clear data and force stop, then remove the battery for 30 sec and then reboot it twice....

Flashtool method
Download the correct firmware file for your phone at the bottom of the post.
Make sure Flashtool is installed.
Place downloaded firmware file(.ftf format) in Flashtool\firmwares(by default C:\Program Files\Flashtool) folder.
Start Flashtool.
Click the lightning button and choose Flashmode.
Firmware should appear there, if you have it in correct folder. Choose it.
Turn off your phone, connect USB cable to computer, then press Volume Down button and connect USB cable to your phone.
Flashtool should detect your phone and starts flashing. Follow the instructions.
When it says „Flashing completed“, unplug your phone and turn it on.

What volume combination and stuck at the logo mean? You do flashing firmware via flashtool with device off.
It said connect USB cable and then power + vol - .I did it but nothing happened. It's still at the logo. I installed an official firmware once and a blue led indicator showed up. Now it doesn't .
Be sure that the phone is off then plug the usb cabl and hold volum down key in the same time and your in flash mod then open flashtool and see videos on youtube on how to flash ftf files using flashtool and that should be over

do you really want a cm10 rom? then unlock your bootloader (but be mindful that you may lose your warrant and bad things might happen to your phone) here's the tut http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1879750
after you unlock your bootloader
flash your kernel through flashtool
then install cm10 rom
but if you want to go back to your stock rom
you need flashtool and obviously your stock rom (ftf file)
click the lightning-like button then choose flashmode
select the rom then you'll be prompted to connect your phone
hold the power button and volume down button at the same time until the led light is blue.
wait to complete and your back to your original rom
i hope it helped you

Wait untill you feel 3 vibrations.
What firmware you had when you installed the rom and can you give the link to the thread of the rom you installed?
Do you have ftf to original formware?
One vibration reboot, three power off.
After you will switch off, try flash tft then.

Actually before that i was trying to port a rom but it didnt work out.
so i flashed the pacman rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2372433
in this i had to fastboot the boot.img which i then was unable to.
and before that i had the same rom installed. i have the original ftf.
i instaled the latest flashtool. it says the drivers arent installed but they are.
windows says unable to install drivers.
after i press the vol up and power, after 1 vibration it goes to kernel. i waited for 5 min pressing the buttons but nothing happened.
when on kernel, flashtool says device connected in usb debugging off.
Thanks for your help!
in the flashtool, i chose the log level to debug.
then my phone was able to get to the fastbot mode and i successfully fastbooted the correct cm kernel and booted up the rom!

Did you replace the kernel image before installing? Realy weird why the didn't fo it themselves.
No ppoint to try booting the phone.
You have removable battery so try to remove it for a minute, put it back and see if you can connect in flash mode and flash original formware.
BTW what do you mean by "goes to kernel?" recovery?
