hello ,
suddenly my s2 won't read any sim card and it's always on flight mode ! i tried to restart the phone and it didn't work , also tried to take the battery and the sim card off for a while and it didn't work also , i did factory reset still nothing.
- the sim card worked normally on another phone
- the phone is running on android 2.3.5 because we didn't get the ICS in the middle east for some reason.
- the phone is not rooted.
- kies doesn't recognize the phone anymore .
so how do i make it work ?
and sorry for the bad English because I'm not a native speaker .

I'm pretty sure you EFS folder is messed up. There is a guide in general to recover it altrough most likely it won't. Other way is to contact xda member odia, I think he can recover it.

Do one more factory restore but this time without Sim card and SD card.
Use the dial code to wipe.

Check first your IMEI is correct .
What do you mean by not read sim card network or you cannot read the data on the sim contacts etc .

the network doesn't work and i can't show the data , it basically tells me to "insert the sim card" so it's like the sim is not even in the phone at all.

Then it may not be you efs folder (IMEI!) becoming corrupted after all! Try cleaning the contacts on your sim & inside your phone & make sure none of the pins are bent or broken internally also, then try somebody elses sim card in your phone first before replacing your own! If your sim works in another phone then it's got to be something to do with the contacts/pins, as you haven't flashed your phone or anything to corrupt stuff in the first place!!

Annoyed with Android
I have the exact same symptoms except I did not play around with any software updates or “internal settings”. The memory on my phone was filled with photos I took over the weekend and some apps refused to start up because of the lack of memory. Probably the mistake, I took the SD card out to try to read it from my Win 7 notebook, because the “Gallery App” did not want to open to allow me to delete of some images to free up memory. (Well why not, most other equipment allow their SD cards to be read by Windows.)
Whatever the reason the phone is completely stuffed; the SD card is not recognised and that result in no phone connection!! The phone can't be used. This is absolutely ludicrous. One cannot sell equipment that can be made unusable this easily. I can understand maybe losing image/data on the SD card if I took it out, but now the entire phone is useless, and it seems (from other forums too) that it is quite a process to get the so-called IEMI folder back. I am really frustrated at this point and have a real annoyance with Android. Judging from the amount of hits returned after a Google search, this SD card problem is a fairly common one. I am not going to fix this; will rather get a new phone, one that works, and it will not be an Android phone. Yes I know hardcore Andriod followers will be all over my post, but just think a bit, this kind of problem should not happen and is really nonsense
(PS: People that moan about multiple postings, can't you just answer the question, even if there is another similar thread, do you have to nit pick on everything.)

- There is no need for you to start spamming this thread.
- Ask questions with common sense, that will help you get the much needed assistance.
- There no need for you to threaten anyone. If you are not going to buy Android device again, million more people will still buy it.
- You must understand that, people who give assistance here on XDA, do so without any monetary benefit. It's not your right to be given assistance, it's a privilege.
- Xda just like any other forum/organisation has rules and regulations, you must follow them.

Apologies for the double messages. I tried to fix it numerous times, but it does not seem to take effect.
Jokesy, the fact people don’t get paid for commenting here is completely irrelevant; I also have a day job and don’t have 6 hours in the evening to get a phone to make a call. Pointing out severe problems with a product is not spamming.

Report my post; hopefully an administrator can clear up the extra messages as sure as tax this editor cannot. Do you think for one moment I value membership of a site where some rude one-eyed geeks hang out?
To the $20 guy; the phone is not worth that much. I will probably not come back to this site, so it is pointless, but I would even mail the phone to you in its original box, free of charge, if I could.

Interesting...
I am in a similar situation with a t989 phone that doesn´t recognize my simcards.
Some days ago I tried to upgrade my phone to the latest official ICS using ODIN as KIES
was always giving disconnection errors before finishing the upgrade.
Finally I got my phone stuck at the download mode with an error message and a yellow warning triangle.
I thought I had a bricked phone, but fortunately I managed to recover it using an old
official ROM. The problems is that now it doesn´t recognize any simcard inserted.
The current installed software versions are:
Android 2.3.5
Base band: T989UVKID
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
Compilation number: GINGERBREAD.UVKID

Hello please i just read your post and would need your advice, my S2 just stopped recognizing my Sim card yesterday night, i was playing a fast action game on my phone and the phone suddenly went off, when it came back on it did not recognize my Sim card any longer. I tired putting the same Sim in another phone and it worked but when i returned it to mine it still did not recognize my Sim, please can you tell me what to do with regards to this issue?
My Atrix start rebooting itself every 10 to 20 min. It doesnt matter what i tried to resolved. I have returned to stock, used cm 7.2 stable and other rooms and the cellphone keeps rebooting itself no matter what.
I did a fast search and I found many threads about this in the last couple months, so not old threads seems like everyone is having this issue recently and no solution yet. Many people mentioned is a problem with the radio, others say it is the sim card, or hardware problems but it is really weird that so many people is having this problem recently, isnt it?
My cellphone is exactly one year older so no more warranty for me, either way I have it unlock so i guess I voided my warranty since then. has anyone trying to contact Motorola about it or A&T, for me it is a really big deal, specially looking all the people that is having the same problem.
I will really appreciate if any of our wonderful devs here in xda have an idea of what this problem can be and how to solve it, I mean really solve it.
I had to flash a uk radio on mine to fix the mess. Sucks cause battery life is worse on the radio I'm on but better to have bad batt life than reboots all the time
Some people had random reboots caused by a faulty SIM card; it's an easy and simple thing to try and see if it solves your issue. Usually if you just walk in a store and ask, your carrier will replace your SIM card for free.
New sim card fixed my reboot problem. The AT&T store was skeptical, but they replaced it anyway... and it worked! I had the same problem with an HTC Aria, and changing the sim card fixed it. Interestingly, the Aria still randomly reboots without a sim card, but once the new sim is installed - no problem. Go figure! Since my stock ATRIX 4G won't work without a sim card, I can't try that scenario.

mmm I really was skeptical to try a new sim card mainly because i tried my atrix without the sim and keeps rebooting so I though that sim card couldnt be the problem, but I will try hoping that helps.
Logic will tell us that if atrix keep rebooting without sim card this wouldnt be the problem, right? So how is possible that a new sim card would be able to fix this problem (well maybe) but you still have it without sim card?
Thanks a lot for your replies.
ok I tried with a new sim card and I am still having the reboots, so the sim card is not the problem and never was. So any other recomendation on how to solve this issue? I can't belive that some many are having this problem, according to what i read, and we dotn hear anything from Motorola.
Check if it reboots when you keep it cool, try leaving it in a fridge. It's a common symptom of bga solder balls coming apart when things get hot and expand.

Seriously, stop whining on every thread. If you have nothing constructive to say, stfu. Are you this whingy in real life? Keep it up and you will never get a chance to contribute to the gene pool.
You got a dud unit, sucks for you, get a grip!
PS. If you just need a hug and sympathy, here you go, /group: hug hug kissy kissy/. We all feel for you. Better now?
PPS. It sounds like you have a CPU that is heat damaged, probably from some unfortunate flash or just bad luck. If you can't afford a new phone, buy one with a broken screen for peanuts and swap the motherboard. The Atrix is probably the easiest phone to pull apart and service that there is. (iFixit has a step by step tear down) Actually, that's the great unsung feature of this phone, it's so damn easy to work on.

Weren't some applications causing this issue as well?
I think it was Facebook.
I had the random reboot issue while using the device without a sim card. Putting a sim card in solved it. Still puzzled as to why it does that with out a sim card.
If the SIM didn't fix it, I would start looking at apps. That's something that nobody seems to realize, that apps can cause wonky issues just as bad as hardware, kernel, OS, etc... If you want to track it down, I would start with a fresh ROM-of-your-choice install and slowly add your apps to see which one is causing the issue.
@Atrix-Owner - hijacking a legitimate thread to spit your poison is pointless and juvenile. Grow up and move on - at the very least STFU. That is all. +ignore

Sim didnt fix it for me, and I already looked for every application but nothing was running that could cause this. I really think I have the faulty part for heat because the reeboots seem to happen only when the cellphone gets hot. I leave the cell phone resting and it can stay without reboot days, but as soon as I start using any game(shadowgun, engry birds) or applications (surf the web, check videos) that demand the cellphone some kind of power then cellphone will start feeling hot and will reboot.

I really was hoping it will be somethig cause by software and not hardware where a hardware fix/replace will be need. I already have another phone, a Razr, but i really like my Atrix and I want it to pass it to my sister or my girlfriend.
in cause I would want to fix it, do you think will be cheaper to buy a broken screen atrix and do the repair as you mentioned or just send my atrix to motorola to be repair or maybe any other rapairshop.
Thanks everyone for your replies.
I was mostly aiming my reply at our resident wailing wall, if you can get moto to fix your phone for you then that seems like the preferred option.

Hi Guys,
In the past few days ive noticed that if i dont check my phone regularly it will simply refuse to wake up (screen on). I know the phone is still working as the LightFlow settings still use the notification light when needed. I have also had situations where the phone wakes up but theres no touch functions, but locking and waking up again fixes that in 1 try. Has anyone else had this issue or am I going to have to send the phone back?
Thanks
Michael
P.S. The phone is not rooted and hasnt been updated since out the box. Any suggestions to root the phone to fix this will be ignored.
Uninstall LightFlow it has been known to cause this issue.
That is all we can suggest unless your willing to root.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had my HTC Desire rooted and this has put me off rooting my phone at the moment, but I was waiting for the Jelly Bean AOSP anyway.
Not trying to take this too far off topic, but what do you have against root? All root effectively is is an admin mode, you don't have to flash a custom rom.

Yes, but u can use "triangle away" (by chainfire) to reset flash counter(found in download mode) and flash a stock rom with Odin and back is your warranty.

Over here afaik at least within the first period the seller has to actually prove you caused the damage to refuse the claim.
Having a rooted device will not stand as having caused hardware-damage.
So far I've yet to hear about a single case of warranty being refused in this country due to software modifications.
If it was as simple as putting a "Waranty void if removed" sticker on stuff actually having any meaning, that would be the end of democraty. Fortunately the law tells otherwise and manufacturers have to obey it (or buy their own law... at least in the USA that seems to work)
However it most certainly will make repairs far easier if the device is stock since they cannot even try to blame you for incorrect configurations or bad flashes.

They've removed that button in their bloatware-edition of the Samsung ROM - probably to prevent users from updating over 3G connectivity.

Just flash any Samsung- or aftermarket-ROM (I recommend CM9 or the CM9-based ParanoidAndroid) of your choice and you're good.
DXLF3 modem should work well according to what I've heard.
Simply putting this, i buyed a SGSII about a month ago, and since then it shutdows or freezes. I don't know what is wrong. I TRADED THE PHONE 3 TIMES!!! And all 3 times the phone has the SAME problem. It random shutdown/freeze(I don't know the difference). Theres almost 0% chance that the Vodafone store has 3 devices with teh exact same problem, when the 3rd SGSII i got(this one) is from a different package then the others....
So I ask here really kindly, who can help me if some1 already had some problem with some application I have installed. I leave here the screenshots of Google Play apps I have installed. Apart that i only have BBS.

If this helps, maybe it is causing the problem, if someone has this version of Android and reports it giving problems i would apreciate

Ill take it to the store then
So I went to Vodafone and first question they made was:
Have you changed your SIM card lately?
I todl them it had ~5years or something.
They said it may be the card.
I asked if this ever hapened.
They said never...
So i asked, if it never hapened why you say its because of SIM card?
---
And that was it. They told before anything I should change SIM and test if it still shuts down...
What you guys think? Anyways I'm gonna change SIM card to 4G one, since now Vodafone is obligating every1 to change, they gonna deactivate the old ones soon... Then i'm gonna see if phone goes down...
I just seems strange the phone goes down cause of SIM card with no signal or something... Anyone knows a answer to this?
Any1 knows osomething about this?

Dude, bumping your thread every couple of hours isnt going to achieve anything other then possibly it been closed or deleted.
Firstly people will reply when/if they have something to say. Second its New Years eve, most people are busy. Only reason why I'm not is because I'm not well at the moment so resting.
A sim card wouldnt make your phone shut down, hes talking crap. Also when you say "cant unlock" do you mean network unlock? If so then use the search button, we have plenty of topics on how to unlock network very easily, most/best are a simple app you install from market.
Don't take Vodafone's crap. Demand a replacement as the one they provided is faulty from day 1.
Try without a SIM too, this will prove that is not the problem.
Take Atheists advice and don't bump within a 24hr time frame, especially today/yesterday.

Are you sure on that? Seems they don't want to simply trade the phone, and wanna keep it for tests...
Though, 2 days passed and he doesn't shuts down...
Not entirely sure as I cannot test the phone myself but for a new phone to be playing up, it's not convenient and I would want a phone that works without crashing, especially from new.

Hey so i bough my SGSII 3 days ago, and this is the 2nd time it happens. The phone just shuts down or something. I can't unlock it by any means.
Only thing i've putted on it was some apps and Nova launcher.
Should I take it to replace or? Is it hardware? Thanks!

Try to take off this cover with the magnet. I think that the magnet is interfering with the hardware which then causes the phone to shut down.

Am I the only one that thinks taht is really strange 2 phones have the same problem? And that they hold like 1 day or 4 (depends on the phones mood xD) and then shutsdown? xD
I wished someone informed enough on old SIM cards could clarify me if SIM has something to do or not
But I already went to the store, but they dont have any SGSII left lol Waiting for a new packages to come..

Must be a faulty hardware, is that store reliable?
A brand new device has to run super smooth, if not, store's fault.

Look dude, you have been told OVER and OVER again that it couldn't be the sim card causing phone to reboot. Its either your hardware like your phone or battery or its your software, ie your rom or apps installed.
Have you even bothered trying other sim cards?
Tried factory reset?
Have you tried other rom?
Have you tried other kernel?
Have you got refund and gone elsewhere?
Have you read any of the replies here or in your duplicate threads?

With all due respect it seems you don't read the replies you say you bother to answer...
1- It doesn't reboots, it just shutdowns. Thats why I say my problem isn't found elsewhere therefore doesn't seems to be a ROM problem.
2- Since I have 14 days (and not the usual 30) to ready-exchange the device trying a SIM card won't be enough, since the phone can handle random time turned on without going down.
3/4 - I already changed the phone once, so same hardware flaw would be suspicioous since phones are tested and odds of getting a faulty hardware 2 times in a row with the exact swame faulty style is like 1/1000. Especially on recent SGSII.
5- Nope, i'm hoping i'll get a talk with Samsung(not vodafone) and talk to them if the third phone come with same problem.
6- Yes I did. But as I said on point 1) it seems you didn't read mines I asked for someone that has a sim card knowledge, since phones in the past DID shutdown due to low network/loss of signal causing phones to shutdown. But as I said to the Vodafone guy, i think its strange that a new phone such as most smartphones are to shutdown cause of SIM card beeing old/loosing signal with this 4G thing. But since i traded for this new SGSII and the SAME problem is hapening i tend to beleive is the SIM. Though I already asked Vodafone to send me a 4G card and if I get the third SGSII I will try to test the full 14 days I have to see if its the SIM card thats causing something or not.
Apart all of this, if any1 faced the same problem please tell me something(most likely will be from Portugal, who knows).

You haven't mentioned changing Roms or Kernels.
This to me sounds like a software issue.
This is not a Sim card issue!!!.
It might be wrong current or voltage issues, but this being a new phone would lead me straight back to it being a software issue.
I have a Galaxy S2 for over a year and had a load of random reboots or shutdowns. It always was a kernel issue, update to the latest or downgrade to the most stable always fixed it. So my advice try to fix the software before blaming the hardware. Try different kernels, Roms and if you are still having the problem then it is a hardware issue. Flash a stock Rom back on and your phone should still be under warranty. Goodluck
BTW this is hilarious: 1- It doesn't reboots, it just shutdowns. Thats why I say my problem isn't found elsewhere therefore doesn't seems to be a ROM problem.
That sounds like a Rom or Kernel problem. First thing I would check! Are you sure that it shut downs rather than just freezing?
Also I just noticed your on 4.0.4 there is problems with the version of android

He's been advised now multiple time in multiple topics to try new kernel or rom but he just keeps simple ignoring the advise or dismissing it and seems to be convinced its his sim card for some odd reason.
If he wants to create multiple topics asking for help (have them closed/deleted) and then ignore the advise and then wonder why he still has same issues then its his own fault and his own problem.
I successfully rooted my phone and successfully installed the volume hack package and the battery fox for 4.0.4 (both I found how to do on this website) and for a good few months my phone was working fine on Android 4.0.4
Then one day I was replying to a text message the phone just switched itself off and wouldn't get past the boot screen where it comes up with the Samsung Galaxy S III logo. With no one offering me any help when I've posted about this problem on this site and various others and after searching google for days to find a fix as I am a Mac user (Heimdall) with no access to a PC (Odin) at all, I took it to a local phone shop, explained the problem to see if they'd be able to fix it. They had it for 2 weeks and when I went to collect they told me that the phone ended up having to be sent to Samsung and there was nothing they could do with it. (I figured that anyway as it was rooted). Now I have got the phone back, it's in a worse state than what it was when I took it into the shop. When I try to power on the phone, nothing happens at all, it's just a black screen. I assumed the battery might be flat so when I went to plug in the charger, the battery symbol shows but it's got a circle in the middle of it it as though it's loading but nothing else happens.
Does this mean my phone is completely dead for good with no fix at all?
If it's bin fodder I may as well sell it for parts and try to get a bit of money back out of it as I bought this SIM free and it cost me quite a bit back when it first came out.
I'd appreciate it if I didn't get a load of snotty remarks as though I'm the thickest person on earth! I am fairly new to all this and it's all I ever seem to experience from this website. Please only reply if you have a genuine answer to my problem.
Thank you.

Thank you for that, I'd never heard the term SDS (Sudden Death Syndrome) before. I didn't even know it existed! But anyway since you mentioned that, I did a search, found this link http://www.freesamsungrepairs.com and I called the number, they reckon they can fix it free of charge providing there's no physical or water damage (which there isn't) and all I have to pay is the postage fees! Sounds like there maybe some hope after all!
