You should tell us wich player you have(3.6, 4.0, 4.2, 5.0) but this should be correct with every player( I think).
1: I don't know, but you can probably replace superuser with supersu after you rooted.
2: Samsung use proprietary boot animation. You need a kernel that support boot animation to change it.
3: The first samsung image is in the kernel(or initiated by the kernel) so you can't change it. For the second samsung animation see 2.
4: If the kernel support manual cpu control, wich I don't know cause I simply use them included in the kernel.

You have to flash an kernel that would support overclocking. Other than that you are stuck with stock.

Most of this depends on the DEVICE SO PLEASE TELL WHICH ONE YOU HAVE (as per FORUM POSTING RULES)
1. Like said before, should be just a matter of unistalling Superuser and installing SuperSU, certain custom ROMs for atleast the 4.0 use SuperSU instead of superuser already.
2. Running on custom ROM's on my 4.0 I was able to use the free app ROM toolbox to change boot animations, not sure if it can be done from stock ROM.
3. already covered.
4. You can try (once rooted) using No-frillz CPU or Tegrak Overclock and see if there is anything pat the stock clock speed, but unlikely.

1. If it is already rooted, just install SuperSU from the Play Store. When you open it for the first time, it will update the su binary to the one it uses.
2. Rom Toolbox, XDA forums, anywhere. Make sure it is 800px tall and 480px wide, and put it at /system/media/bootanimation.zip. This will not work with the stock kernel, only a custom one.

A friend of mine had her Eris metroflashed to MetroPCS. Calls and SMS work, but she wants me to provision the rest of it to work like i did with my own Eris on metro. I tried it to find out the Eris one click root app is not on the market anymore however i had the APK, erisone.apk. I loaded it to her SD card and downloaded Astro File Manager and attempted to install, which it proceeded to tell me it couldnt be installed on that phone. All i need is RA-Eris recovery as i will be loading a custom ROM. Is there an easy way to change the recovery on it so i can do this? I was thinking i just needed to update to 2.1 OTA (can someone provide the link? the old link from google doesnt work anymore) then the Erisone.apk will work (this apk loads custom recovery as well as a root very easily). I need to load a custom ROM before i can begin with the provisioning, what do you guys think i should do?

The top one is one i tried. The bottom link there mainly concerns rooting. Im trying to install a custom rom thats already rooted so i don't care much for rooting but i guess its necessary to install a new recovery image right? All i want to do is install ra-eris recovery so i can load a custom rom. The one click method you linked automatically installs a new recovery image and thats what im really after. I just don't think that one you linked is compatible with 1.5

You have to be rooted and have a custom recovery in order to install a custom ROM.
Editing...ignore what I had posted in this space before.
The second link (starts with "Failing that...") says it works with 1.5.

You HAVE to be rooted to change: recovery, kernel, hboot, ROM, and radio. The only exceptions are official updates, whether they be OTA or running a RUU update from Windows with the phone connected.
Root access effectively means being able to change things you're not normally allowed to change.
If you want a custom recovery on your phone, you're going to have to root it. To be technically fully rooted, you would probably have to change your hboot (referred to as S=OFF), too, but it doesn't sound like you need that part. This may not be the answer that you want, but it is what it is.

I'm sure they all probably do, but I'm sure they say definitively in their threads, too. Everyone who roots wants to install a custom recovery so that they can flash rooted ROMs. Most everyone, anyway. Only those who just want the stock ROM but rooted wouldn't care about the recovery, but those are a minority.

i hook up the phone to the PC then click install_root.bat. That should do what i want, however in what mode should the phone be in when i have it plugged in? Powered on like normal, in the stock hboot/recovery mode...??

You should keep questions about various methods of doing things in the original thread. If it doesn't say in the thread about what mode it should be in, then you'll have to ask GrdLock. If it doesn't specify then maybe it doesn't matter what mode it's in. The only thing it specifies is:

yeah i got that much out of it. Okay, thanks for your help.
The jcase "One Click" .apk does not work on 1.5, as you discovered.
Note that the root exploit method that One Click employs does work on 1.5 - but unfortunately the One Click app itself only runs on 2.1.
The Universal Eris Root for Dummies! method will work on both 1.5 and 2.1; it uses the same (wag3slav3) rooting exploit, but does not require the 2.1 OS to be running in order to work correctly. All it does to your phone is to install the Amon_RA custom recovery - exactly what you are looking for.
This method is the same one referenced by scary alien in his post mentioned above - the second URL in his post.
I've said this before, but I'll say it again: when you say "rooted", it means different things to different people. The most general definition is that you have "installed something on your phone which gives you privileges to alter some or all of the phone software which the device manufacturer did not intend".
So - you can have an engineering bootloader on a phone, but a completely stock OS... and that would be a "rooted" phone. Same deal for a set of root tools installed in the OS, but a S-ON bootloader and a stock recovery partition. Or a stock bootloader, a stock OS, but a custom recovery - again, that is also a "rooted" phone. In all three cases, you now have the means to alter whatever you want on the phone. That's all that "rooted" really means; it doesn't necessarily mean that the OS has been kanged up.

2. Could someone please point me to the EASIEST step-by-step guide on how to root a SG2? I have found a couple of threads but am not sure if they are the most up-to-date/best/most appropriate for a novice.
3. Will I be able to apply the official SG2 updates from Samsung after rooting? (OK, so that was three questions....)

Rooting using CF-root replaces the phones kernel (core of the OS) with a modified one, with clockworkmod recovery (nandroid backup, etc), it also includes insecure adb (adb that can run as root not just standard user) and copy's the superuser apk to the system dir and sets permissions.
This is all done via a special initramfs attached to an otherwise stock kernel.
why would you want to root and then use OTA stock roms?
If you find you can't get OTA stock updates after a root (i.e. if Samsung decide to utilise some mad kernel reset counter ban hammer) then simply check XDA where I guarantee the OTA stcks will appear pretty quickly!
Things to consider:
1. Rooting is very very good for numerous reasons that can be found everywhere on XDA - and google.
2. You can replace the kernel for root but continue to use stock rom (and use a jig to replace the reset counters) for pretty much stock functionality.
3. If you root and don't like what you get (i.e. you're mental) then it is just as easy to replace all factory rom/kernel information (which are always available in the original development thread) but you should invest in a jig (from ebay) so you can reset the counters (you can do this via software but I find a jig far simpler).

Rooting won't lose your apps. Titanium Backup Pro is the best way to go.
Install Kies, exit Kies, open Odin, phone in download mode + plug it in, don't touch any of the Odin settings, load "PDA" with chainfire's kernel -> go!
It's really straightforward, but it can be a little nerve wracking the first time.

I just rooted, and it "only" took me about 15 min including the downloading of the various files (still way more though than the 30 sec. it should take according to the Chainfire post!! ).
@m4rshall's summary made it clear that the steps are really very few and simple, because when you read the other posts, it seems like a much more complex process due to their size, though they are absolutely necessary to get all the details.
Some follow up questions:
1. What would I need to do if I wanted to the original, factory state?
Not that I'm planning to, but in case I notice some issue that makes me decide to go back (I read in that loooong thread that some people noticed slower connections after rooting??)?
2. From what I've gathered, the yellow exclamation mark at boot is purely "cosmetic" and does not effect in any way at all the performance of the device. Correct?

Clockworkmod recovery is a replacement recovery, it allows you to preform full device snapshot backups, to allow you to restore your phone to any point in time.
Allows you to flash CWM compatible zips.
Mount your SD to a computer while in recovery to copy things to it.

What I am confused is, CF-Root and ClockWorkMod Recovery. My plan is definitely to install Latest CWM v5 so that I can apply CM7 later (at least after more 5 months till I'm working on one development project related to Maps & GPS of Android platform). But as I heard, some themes & customizations needs CF-Root from THIS LINK. Which i find quite confusing how to apply. My questions are:
1) How to apply CF-Root? Please explain steps and Give me Attachments to download. Will my device work same as right now? Because I need my device to run fully so that I can test my written android applications directly via USB Debugging.

remove rom manager for god sake.. rom manager will brick your phone .. search before you do anything.. thousands of people have destroyed their phones due to rom manager.. so remove it as fast as possible!!!!!!!

Now to answer your questions, but firstly:
CF-Root is a kernel, adapted by the awesome ketut.kumajaya. CMW is a custom recovery. I'm saying this because I'm getting the impression that you think CF-Root and CMW are the same thing.
1. Most recent custom ROMs already provide CF-Root, so once you install the ROM, you'll have CF-Root.
1.a. No. At least, I don't think so, because flashing a kernel/ROM doesn't require root access as a dependancy
1.b. Not to my knowledge. I've been using CF-Root for so long, I forgot what the stock kernel feels like.
2. You know what? I actually have no idea. The only way I can think of to restore the stock recovery is by flashing a stock ROM via Odin. If you take it to a service counter, I doubt the counter will notice, but I would be pretty doubtful for the people who actually service your phone.
3. If you want it to be as close as stock ROM, use the stock ROM; it's that simple!
But if you want to use a custom ROM with the closest resemblance to stock ROMs, I would recommend the GingerReal ROM; it's essentially stock ROM, spiced up with performance tweaks.
3.a. You can do an entire system backup (Nandroid backup) with CWM. Just boot into CWM (hold Power+Home button when the phone is off), and choose "backup and restore" > "Backup" and wait. To restore, do the same things, except pick "Restore"
3.b. Doing a Titanium Backul is... complicatedly simple to answer. I'd recommend you to look up their FAQ or something.

First of all thanks for replying. And sorry I have messed up to explain my question more clearly... But, I do perfectly understand difference between two of those. CF-Root is custom kernel and CWM is custom recovery mode which provides a lot more facilities that stock recovery wouldn't.
First of all, I am on Stock ROM 2.3.4 DDKQ5 and I want to stay on it without flashing ROMs. Because I need my phone working super fine till I complete my project of android application development.
In what I am confused is, I want to apply some themes/bootanimations which according to what I read, requires CF-Root (which already covers root, Super User, CWM and BusyBox)... I have all of them except CWM in my phone.. What I think of a possibility that I could just apply CF-Root and use themes etc. which automatically will install CWM helpful for me taking snapshots of stock ROM as backup before I change even theme.
My question is: Chainfire's Post says different method to apply CF-Root and Ketut.Kumajaya says different method to apply CF-Root. However, I understand only the method which says go into recovery mode and apply update. But that post fails how CWM 4 automatically booted.
I want to be on safe side asking proper procedure before I proceed.
Also, ChainFire says his custom kernel is tested on "stock Gingerbread XXKPH, XWKPN, and DXKPB" which I assume are stock firmwares of different regions. So another question about compatibility in my region's (India's) stock firmware.

My question is: Chainfire's Post says different method to apply CF-Root and Ketut.Kumajaya says different method to apply CF-Root. However, I understand only the method which says go into recovery mode and apply update. But that post fails how CWM 4 automatically booted.
I want to be on safe side asking proper procedure before I proceed.
Also, ChainFire says his custom kernel is tested on "stock Gingerbread XXKPH, XWKPN, and DXKPB" which I assume are stock firmwares of different regions. So another question about compatibility in my region's (India's) stock firmware.

Chainfire's method invloves flashing via Odin if i saw it right.
Ketut's method is of flasihng CF-Root via recovery
I recommend flashing via recovery,its safer,easier and faster.
Don't worry,theres nothing such as Firmware compatibilty,its all about stability and perfomance.I am from India too and is using KPH firmware which is European firmware.I syggest you flash the KPH firmware,its the most widely used firmware.You would not face any problem if you flash another region's firmware.Flashing a different firmware is not easy atleast in my opinion.You just need Odin to do that.I suggest you read hubix's step by step detailed tutorial on that.

Thanks.. what I don't understand is there are bunch of files under Ketut's attachment. Which ones to apply in recovery mode and in which order??
Please help me out with that.
Also, if there's any bug like Wi-Fi or anything else pesters me, how would I revert it back to original custom ROM?
PS: I have just rooted my phone. CWM is not installed yet. Hope it will be installed by CF-Root directly.
If you have a bug,you could always restore a backup by using CWM.
I suggest you flash CWM before you flash cf-root.
About the files,ask in ketut's thread

lol...ketut cf-root kernel is the only kernel for stock(samsung) ROMs present here.Of course it is made by ketut . All other kernels are for cm7.

I obviously don't know what I'm doing but hopefully on of you can help. Below is my current SGH-1777 in the "about phone" stats after I tried to root my phone. I didn't understand the root instructions very well (Ya stupid me) and temporarily bricked my phone because after the reboot I got the evil yellow triangle. I could see the options to chose from but none of them would respond.
So I reconnected my bricked phone to my PC and put the phone in download mode and reinstalled the stock kernel which I had saved earlier and the phone works normal again, but it looks like I still have the installs from the root first root attempt:

Kernel Vs 2.6.35.7
Build number UCKH7
I was rooting my phone because I'm pis... off at Samsung and AT&T because part of the reason I bought this phone was for the NFC feature and wanted to use Google Wallet. I also read where rooting the phone improves battery life and get rid of all the bloatware AT&T stuck me with. In my software list I see where I have Superuser and the ROM manager still installed.
Do I need to start all over and how do I do that, or am I just missing a piece of the puzzle? I think one mistake I accidentally made was using the ODIN 1.82 instead of the 1.85 but when I try to PDA the 1.85 now the PDA screen flashes for a second and disappears.

sounds like you rooted it correctly the first time. That yellow triangle doesnt mean you screwed it up. It just means you flashed a non-stock kernel and you tripped the counter. Thats all. Nothing to worry about there.
I dont think you can Google Wallet just yet from the i777. You can, however, remove bloat or better yet, just load a custom rom from one of the great devs.
If you see the superuser app, you're currently rooted. All this info is documented already in stickies.
The info in your About Phone screen is the same as stock out of the box. It would also look the same for stock rooted, and the same with custom roms based on stock. You can make these modifications without changing that info.
The I9100 boot screen with the yellow warning triangle is caused by flashing a non-stock kernel using Odin or Heimdall from a computer. That in itself does not mean the phone is soft bricked.
You can install a custom kernel with nfc support (Entropy512's latest daily driver), but it does not include support for Google Wallet. Support for Google Wallet is a fairly complex programming task that will be a long while appearing if ever.
Please read the guides linked in my signature. There is a lot of good information in there. If you still want to install custom software, a good way for a beginner is to follow the step by step guide.

NFC isn't the kernel - it's just a permissions XML and modified Settings.apk (on I777-based ROMs. Hellraised I9100 ROMs only need the permissions XML, which is included in Hellraiser)
I am pretty much with everyone else and think you are probably rooted. I would just download TB or Root Explorer from the market and see if Superuser allows you root to access either of these apps. Having Superuser on the phone would normally mean you are rooted but to make sure you can run one of the above programs to make sure you are allowed access.

Anyways, I've just gotten myself a TF201 on the latest build of JB (4.1.1), that's my first ever Android device.
I've searched the forum abit and know simple stuff like what root is, rom, and etc.
I've searched for many root tutorials, but found only ones that will guide you on how to restore, or the program just crashes.
I've unlocked my bootloader (don't care about the warranty much).
Now, I know how to fastboot (thou it's stuck on "starting download something").
and have few questions.
1. How do I root? can I have a step-by-step guide please?
2. After I root and stuff, I want to get myself a fresh ROM, that I want to be stable, fast, and not that "heavy" (I mean so it won't affect my performace much).
I've seen the CM but as I understood its just a beta, and unstable.
3. Either it will be a fresh ROM, or an Ubuntu system (cuz I want to use the tablet as a laptop), i've searched alot, but found only a VNC(?) one, that I understood that is very unstabe, and needs internet connection(?), and an ubuntu installer in the market. (i've checked the topic on developers section, but it seems very unstable)
I'd like your opinions about a good ubuntu client, and is it possible to dual boot? if not, will I be able to restore back to android? Also, anyway to complitly wipe your device from android, and restore it if i dont like the ubuntuz?

To root, install twrp using fastboot, download a flashable superuser (I used the supersu one from the supersu webpage) get busybox, and you're done.

Go to the hairybean thread. Follow the instructions in post 2 for installing hairybean twrp (normal) version.
Now follow the instructions in post 1 for installing hairybean 1.51. Root is built in and everything is selectable from the installer so you can make the rom as light or as heavy as you want.
When you get to the kernel installer part I would suggest installing clemsyns 1.7 kernel (not the data2sd one)
