Hi, I am currently roaming and I saw that my data icon has an E on it. It is currently on a GSM network. However I wanted to know what kind of data connection I have and what the E stands for. I have attached a screen shot, the icon is 3rd from the right now counting the time. Thanks in advance.
E stands for Edge. Basically 2G speed. E=Slow. 3G=Standard. H/H+=Fast. 4G=Fastest

E stands for EDGE. You can also be connected via plain old GPRS (G icon), in my country it can only be found in remote rural locations. Both are referred to as 2,5G, however GPRS is unusable these days (less than 32 kbps).

Ok - been doing a bit of upgrading today. Went to WMXL .20 today - very good! Then went to Olipro's BL today again great!
And now I have just finally upgraded my radio to 1.34 which seems to have gone flawless.
However, my connection just went from a G symbol to an E symbol. Now I live on the very edge of the 3G network and before the upgrade, every once in a long time I'd have one peg of 3G (Used to read U and then 3G when I went to WMXL) but now it's showing I have full signal E which I've never seen except on my friends Palm 750W which is on verizon and it shows an E when connected to their EVDO service. To my knowedge this isn't possible for my phone so is this an error? Anybody else have this problem? The phone still makes and recieves calls fine (in fact, better connect - voice quality - less lag) but it's still weird to get the E
Trust me, it's not EVDO, that's physically impossible for a Hermes So it's gotta be EDGE.

Yeah - I knew it was a practical impossibility for the hermes to have EVDO but that's the only place I've EVER seen the E. Do other people have the E showing up with Cingular? I'll be curious to see what I get tomorrow when I go into town where there's 3G service.
Cingular does have EDGE service in most locations - a lot more than 3G - so it would make sense.
in wm5 mine showed G when I was roaming away from 3Aus to Telstra, now it shows an E for roaming. This is quite good as telstra uses Edge (2.75G) not GPRS (2.5G).
some nonsense from me.. regarding the title "E is for Edge?", on how xda-dev members will teach their kids (*hint Vj) ABC
A for Apple - the company behind `I`
B for Bluetooth - going wireless
C for Crossbow - name for WM6
D for DoCoMo - if you are in Japan
E for Edge - as per this thread
F for Frequency - is your phone tri-band?
G for GPRS - data packet rocks
H for HTC - the company that *add your comments here*
I for eye-Phone - er..
L for ..?
M for Microsoft - that bastard

im on the rogers network and prior to upgrading to wm6 it showed "G" now mine shows up as "E" as well.. is this normal?
Hi guys,
Just got my Hero and noticed on the bar at the top some letters there, either "H" or occasionally "G"
Wondered what these stood for so downloaded the manual and discovered H = HSPA and G = GPRS..
I also noticed there is potential for it to show "3G" but my phone never does seem to.
I also use Power Manager and noticed that in there the knob always seems to be set to "2G" and not "3G"
Is there a setting on my phone to enable 3G or am i missing something?
Cheers
H speeds > 3G speeds > G speeds
If you are getting H most of the time, don't sweat it, because you are losing absolutely nothing.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks Dave, thats good to know.
I just wonder it too, Only G or H. There is no full H or 3.5G coverage everywhere here but a lot more 3G coverage, so i should get sometimes 3G signal-icon on my phone and it doesn't.
If you search on google for this 3G icon problem you get a lot of hits and questions about it.
So for me i keep still having doubts or questions about not showing the 3G icon.
HSDPA or 3g..
nothing to worry about if your getting H then it means your picking up HSDPA which is quicker than 3g.
hi!
i am using a tmous hd2 with the stock 2.13 rom and the recently released 2.15 radio. up till now i havent really bothered using packet data on my phone because i am a wifi guy... only recently did i start using packet data frequently...
i noticed two things out of place:
1) for some reason i have never seen hspa service on my phone. my operator runs a 3.6mbps dl 2mbps ul hspa services. whenever i switch to 3g and connect data, i always get a 3G written over the signal bars. and i have never seen speeds over 42kB/s (~384kbps) in several months of use. i have full signal strength in both 3g and 2g. if i am running 2g, then i get an E as expected over the signal bars. i have put in all the access point settings as defined by my operator (which are common for both 2g and 3g). i have enabled hsdpa/hsupa from winmo settings->connections->advanced n/w. is something amiss with the hspa settings on the phone? i really want to confirm that i have my phone set up right before i muster the courage to call up customer care.
(for someone from bombay, india, i am running mtnl 3g prepaid with following settings:- ap:gprsppsmum u:mtnl pass:mtnl123. this in itself is quite baffling because mtnl delhi has separate aps for 2g and 3g whereas the bombay network has the same ap for both. ap=access point)
2) i have never seen the H/3G/E/G icons on my taskbar. i mean the ones that are NEXT TO the signal strength icons. the space between the headset and the signal strength is always empty. isnt that particular icon supposed to show 'availibility' of the respective type of data connection? i read somewhere a long time ago that the icons are ROM dependent. but i am pretty sure i have seen snapshots of tmous phones with those icons...
i have been using bsnl cellone 3g since feb and i always got H in south india, even while roaming,...in few cities up north, like lucknow, i got only 3g icon displayed..i guess it should be H in mumbai..
from what you say, i think you have not enabled HSDPA/HSPA setting in the phone...do that..it is in settings/menu/all settings/connection manager or ?phone / advanced network ( i think...can't tell exactly where...iam presently on the android side...)

Hi I use an unlocked TMOUS HD2 here in Italy with the italian carrier PosteMobile and experience the same problem of silenced3 (almost the same as I still haven't tried a cellular data connection): My phone doesn't show the kind of cellular signal available, only when it data connection is activated it says what type of connection it's using. Anyone knows how to solve this?
Thank you for your help...
I am having this peculiar problem that i am facing while using mobile data. I m using reliance network. When i have set the mobile data to 3g, it seems to run on edge network even though the network is full. Why this is so? Anybody can help?

You've got to activate 3G on Reliance first...
Some providers do not preactivae 3G on the sims...
FYI, on Aircel u've got to send a text START 3G to 121 to start using 3G..
Check with your provider whether they've got some provisions like this...
Just check whether there is any E icon on the network icon or is it showing 3G/H+???
The latter shows that 3G is activated...
Hope this helps... :good:

here i find the Reliance network is not providing the service for what the user is using. if one has enabled all the activation process, why it should not start with the 3g network directly even if the signal is poor.

That's because the area where you're at present does not has 3G coverage...
This happens to any network...
If you go out of 3G coverage region or reach the fringes, this occurs...
3G problem on Moto E
I'm using the Motorola Moto E - Global GSM - Unlocked - 4GB (Black) sold on Amazon.
I relative of mine coming in from UK brought it for me.
I have been using it for 2 days in Mumbai and my carrier is Vodafone.
The problem is that i am unable to connect to 3g on my handset no matter what I do. I have accessed the Supermenu and tried using the WCDMA only option in which i was unable to connect to any network at all and the GSM option only Gives me EDGE as my network type. I know it is a Handset issue and not a carrier issue as i tried my SIM card in an Samsung Galaxy S4 and was able to use H+ network.
I am new on this forum so if you guys could help me i'd be really grateful.
Hello,
I mostly use my phone on Wifi but occasionally switch to mobile data. We don't have 4G where I live. The three types of networks available are GPRS (2G), EDGE (2.5G) and HSP (3.5G). Using my previous phone on Mobile Data, I always see the symbol "H" indicating that I on a 3G network. Here are some observations:
1. Since I started using the HAM2 I always see "4G" instead of "H" even though I'm sure it can't be 4G. I can use the internet but its ridiculously slow.
2. Sometimes, when I'm some far away place, I see "E" indicating that I'm using EDGE which means that the "4G" I usually see does not erroneously represent EDGE.
3. I thought the general network in my area was slow. I tried someone else's SAMSUNG phone. The usual "H" was there and the speed was as is expected of a 3.5G network
So, whats wrong with my phone's internet speed. I've verified that I'm using the same access point as everyone else. But internet is just too slow. Usually in SAMSUNG phones, there's an option where you are allowed to switch from 3G to 2G data networks to save some battery but the HAM2 lacks this option. Instead, when defining the access point, there's an option at the bottom called "Bearer" where there are three options; "LTE", "eHRPD" and "Unspecified". Switching to anything other than "Unspecified" does not work.
Is there something that is causing the internet to be slow on my phone or the HAM2 doesn't support 3G data ?
Thanks
4G = H+
4G LTE = LTE
Not sure where you are located, but if you don't have the proper sim card, and provisioning, you won't see LTE, but just 4G, which is the
"old" H+.
I'm in the states, and depending on where I am, and the time of day, using straight talk (tracfone/at&t card), I get anywhere from snail
speed, to around 12meg which is fine for me, I use less than 2gb of data per month. On the phone, that's another story, I use 1500-2000
minutes per month.

If you have the battery savings set to endurance it Will slow down your internet. Changing to normal would help.
I'm on cricket and mobile hotspot and wifi work great
I'm on metro pcs and had never been more happy till 2 days ago for some reason it started to be really slow, hopefully there is some work being done
I am also using MetroPCS and have had no issues so far. Down speeds are super impressive here in New York. I am almost always around 50mb and have seen 75 a few times. My wifi tethering has also been working with no issues.
