Galaxy S3 got bricked - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Here is the problem. I messed up with /efs folder.I didnot have a backup of that even
What happened after that is smthin really scary.
My IMEI number changed. Its 004999010640000/01. As it is not the one written on the phone stamp.
My S/N number changed to 00000000000. Which is again nt the one on the phone stamp.
I am getting smthin like ( yellow rext on black Patch ) .on my home screen. which is staying there continuously. Please see the screenshot attached
For the background the phone was bought in singapore.
Immediate help will be appreciated.

If you don't have a backup of your efs folder its off to the service center for a motherboard replacement for you.

Maybe you can get hold of another SIII, extract the EFS folder and inject/replace your individual data. Just a wild guess though...

No. IMEI cloning is illegal and it's not a topic discussed on XDA..
EFS is device specific.

That would he illegal in most countries because it allows you to get round network blocks on stolen devices.

Whatever...
Another attempt would be to dd the partition and open it up with Winhex (forensic tool) or anything similar to analyze the ext4 partition for deleted/unallocated data. Maybe you can recover something.

[Q] Battery partition problem

I have been told by a friend who had a look at my phone as it will not switch on after I tried to root the phone.
I have been told that I put on the wrong OS on the phone & it has messed up the battery partition, so the phone thinks it has low battery power, thus will not switch on.
Is there anything I can do about this by unblocking it & if I can, could anyone tell me how to do it?
Thanks.
Thanks, you made me laugh (I genuinely laughed out loud reading your post, sorry).
No, you've broken your phone.
For this thing PM a developer they would be the right people to help I out

Charge the battery in a separate outlet for some time, try booting into download mode, if by chance you get it then you are saved. Just download any official ics roms and flash it via odin

This is terrible advice...
Sounds like you are suggesting that he PM a random dev for help when it appears like he flashed a firmware meant for a different phone.
Most of the time this happens, and the phone no longer boots AT ALL (as mentioned by the OP), then no one here is going to be able to help. It will usually require Jtag repair.

You should read the XDA developers rules .
This is not a fix my phone forum .
jje
I think the easiest option for me is to return the phone to my mobile provider (which they want £150 to give me a totally new replacement handset), which I don't think is that bad really.
I don't have another device to charge the battery up on, but I'm still thinking that it will still tell me that it has a low battery to download when put in download mode (which is what it is doing at moment, even though battery is fully charged).

You clearly weren't paying attention when it was said that no amount of help via this site would make a difference for the OP anyways. From his post, it sounds like he (or someone else) had flashed a firmware meant for a different device to his phone, and it now does not boot. That requires either Jtag repair or a motherboard replacement. Neither of which is possible over the internet.
And you seem to think this forum is some kind of tech support forum. Which, while people who are NOT paid are often kind enough to help out people who are having trouble with their devices, it is NOT. It is a developer's forum. Maybe you should give this a read.

I thought Samsung offered two years RTB warranty on phones. Sale of goods act should protect you as well you may be liable for repair if no fault is found.

Samsung offer a two year limited warranty .
Vendor usually twelve months warranty in the UK .
But as phone has been rooted all warranty null and void .
Flashing the wrong firmware likewise .
Custom rom the same custom rom counter above zero the same
So sales of goods act does not apply has phone has been modified by the user .
Custom rom root etc warranty voided see well posted letter to service centres from Samsung .

[HELP]Cannot Turn On S3 After Flashing Cuztomized Rom

Hi,
I just gotten a new Galaxy S3 from AT&T and I decided to root the phone and wanted to flash it with a cuztomized ROM. My phone was successfully rooted and I tried flashing Android Revolution HD ROM ( a cuztomized rom from xda). Right after the phone done flashing the rom and was trying to reboot, it did not boot or turn on. I cannot even start the phone. The phone was just not gonna startup no matter what I did. I could not even go into the recovery mode or download mode so I could not do anything to fix it. Anyone can help me with this? Thanks.

I'm sorry, what is that for? Im a newbie and I dont what is it for.
You have a another version of the s3 (US version) with a different hardware
This is the international S3 GT-I9300 and yours are SGH-I747
So you flashed a firmware without making sure it was for your device...ouch. Any sign of life? .. any vibrate when trying to power on?

Sounds like a brick .. sorry mate.
Well I think you might be able to get away with telling em you were doing an update through kies and the cord got yanked by your cat halfway through... or send it to someone for JTAG. There's a couple reputable buisnesses that do this and with a fast turnaround and relatively low cost considering the cost of the device.. maybe somewhere around $50 bucks (just a ballpark.. could be 60.. beats me) user connexion2005 does JTAG and I believe he has support for the S3!
..but lesson learned. Read, Read, Read .. I am sure the OP of the ROM you flash states plain and clear which device it's for. You need to know which device you have and are modding, and not by its generic name.. "GalaxyS3 international variant is an GT-i9300" .. not sure what the at&t variant is but its not GT-i9300
*edit* actually it doesn't state it in the OP that its for the GT-i9300 variant ... but it is in the GT-i9300 forum.

Yours is an error that people make fairly routinely. Since you are familiar with other phones, you think the same information applies to this phone, and then you don't take the time to read and verify your assumptions.
On the SGH-I777, ClockworkMod Recovery is built into the kernel, and therefore it is not recommended to use Rom Manager, or try to flash CWM separately. As you learned, that can be dangerous.
If you are unable to get any signs of life from the phone at all, then I would suggest you follow the advice above to use a USB jig first to see if that will get you into download mode.
If the phone shows any signs of life, let us know what.
EDIT: Or... if as the other thread implies, your sister's phone is SGH-I727, then ignore the above, and go look for help in the 727 forums.

My 2 cents your ****ed you flashed a firmware for a phone that you don't have on another phone and if you took time to read settings and found device type it would give you SGH-#### that's the forum you should be in just because it says GALAXY S II doesn't mean it's your device

Also before it's said I'm in the military and a firm believer the omitting the truth isn't the same as lying essentially if they don't ask you don't have to tell them or volunteer it same goes with anything in life if offered a great job that didn't run a background check and didn't ask would you tell them you have a felony? +1. He damaged the phone by doing something without understanding what he was doing. The phone is dead because of something he did, something that explicitly violates the warranty. Sending it in for warranty repair is committing fraud.

Read my laundry list post above and technically it was deemed during the entire apple jailbreak fiasco that they can warranty a device not the firmware and that it's your device to do with what you want they may not cancel a warranty for changing software Samsung tried it to me and ended up sending me a new device 1 month after purchase because I knew the legalities and I read my TOS agreement he does have the right to send it in and Samsung will decide if the device is unrecoverable which he would be at fault or if it's a simple repair which they will warranty under user stupidity very few of you have called or spoken to Samsung let alone sent in for repair replacement so if you don't know what your talking about your best to step out of the thread as your only adding speculation at that point
SAMSUNG has apart of their TOS that says we will supply a warranty replacement for your device at our discretion and that they may reject a warranty claim if they accept said claim its not fraud under no circumstances do I condone or recommend fraud this is simply following their TOS if they ask if you flashed firmware I'd say be honest but it's your choice if they don't ask which they rarely do then they will run down list of things with you punch it and their warranty software will make a preliminary decision

How to make sure the IMEI of my S3 is legit

Hey guys,
I've recently bought the S3 from someone (2nd hand).
I would like to know if the IMEI of the device is legit and that it wasn't tempered with so i could in the future upgrade to JB..
can you help me out ?
Thanks in advance
Mike.
Firstly welcome to XDA.
Secondly, why do you think it isn't legal? At the top of this forum are some stickies which are available all the time for you to use. They cover a wide range of topics that are relevant to your new phone, not sure about imei number though!
Check out those stickies and hopefully most of your questions will be answered.

You really helped him.... Noot
You could check on sites like this if it was stolen:
http://www.amta.org.au/pages/amta/Check.the.Status.of.your.Handset
To check if imei is changed is almost impossible on phone itself. But if you got papers from first buyer then on bill and on box should you find imei.
But would help if you tell your country.

ask him for the box or receipt.
kies, using the serial number and imei you can see if it exists and if it's related to any specific carrier

Restore IMEI is as per XDA flashing rule two backup your EFS .
So simply restore your backed up EFS .
No backup service centre is your next step .

Odia is known (among other things) for getting EFS folder to work properly by getting the IMEI nunber outta the nv data file, or something.
These service depends on the available time this user's got now with the SIV and all, and comes with a fee.

Is there an app for that or does he do that per user request I never knew about this, thank you, efs was the one major software issue which always bugged me, I am actually safe with backups but a solution for 'corrupted efs' for people who came here I didn't have any possible good answer.

No, I am not but this knowledge is new to me I didn't know that efs corruption had a possible recovery(without the backup), the only thing I thought possible for a recovery was overwriting with a efs backup.

No, i've read it somewhere, old posts, pretty old actually.
And this is not about corrupted efs folder, this is for formated efs folder.
Got no idea how he does it, that's why he requires a fee.
Of course, this should be regarded as a last resort, if you suggest this to an user make sure that the user is not constantly trying to PM odia.
He will attend to the matter when he wants, how he wants and if he want to.
Sent from the little guy
Odia could sometimes recover the IMEI/EFS details without any backups, etc, and only sometimes. I don't know how he did it & what cases he could/couldn't. He used to ask for a small donation for same.
I'm not even sure if he still does it, but I occasionally suggest this to people who have no other option. As Gaston said, if you do end up doing it, you contact him once & wait. For as long as it takes. You might be in a hurry to get your phone fixed/worried about it all, he doesn't care (nor should he).
I can see some users offering more money over and over on every PM.
He can get rich, this guy, with the yahoos we got around here.
We should get 10% in exchange for promotion.

Odia could sometimes recover the IMEI/EFS details without any backups, etc, and only sometimes. I don't know how he did it & what cases he could/couldn't. He used to ask for a small donation for same.

Thanks for shedding this piece of light, I actually have send people away saying that they have an expensive paperweight. But that's (this Odia guy) just plain incredible.

Whoa. Hang on
I said he could occasionally sometimes do it. There may be certain requirements/certain files may be needed to be intact or whatever. I never knew the details. And I don't even know if he still does this.
I hope you don't start referring every n00b who doesn't have any other option (or is simply too lazy to try other stuff) to him; I suggest you're going to have a lot of very disappointed people on your hands.
The default response to people without backups & who have tried various apps and threads on here is still service centre. That doesn't change.

An interesting discussion!
I have always wanted to ask why @MistahBungle would refer to member Odia at times. Now I know why.
