[Q] SGS2 kernel/rom (insane chip) 4.0.4 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First of all, i got my SGS2 2 days ago, switched over from iphone after 5 years, so don't judge me . I'm thrilled with SGS2, such a perfect phone. I got it unscratched, almost new. Browsing through the forums, i saw CM rom that i would like to install on my phone, but then ... I saw people talking about superbrick , so i installed eMMC check and saw it says that i got insane chip. My "About" screen gives following info:
Model number : GT-I9100
Android version : 4.0.4
Baseband version : I9100XXLQ6
Kernel version : 3.0.15-1157945 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT Fri Oct 26 16:17:36 KST 2012
Build number : IMM76D.XWLQ2
My question is, how can i manage to install CM rom on my phone without bricking it ? I tried searching through the forums, not that i didn't , but im kinda unsure. Should i apply SiyahKernel S2-v5.0.1 through Odin first, and then try to apply CM 10.1 or even some stock rom or what ? Sorry to bother you, but i'm fairly new to android kernels/roms. Thanks in advance.

I meant, after applying siyah, i can install CyanogenMod 10.1 for example, or Resurrection Remix JB v3.1.3 ?
And can i root ? That would be all, don't wanna bother you anymore. Thanks :good:

You'll be rooted with siyah and yeah, you can flash those ROMs via CWM.

BACKUP
But before doing anything don't forget to backup you default ROM.
I have done it in CWM recovery in the "backup and restore" .
It will create a folder in SD card -->clockworkmod--->backup ( I recommend to upload that whole folder somwhere USB maybe only to be sure if anything will happend to that SD card ) .
It saved me last time when I couldn't start the SII.

oh, i do that right after i place siyah on my s2 , right ?

Of course.
1) Flash Siyah.
2) Backup ROM through CWM.
3) Backup all storage and apps using TiBu or Carbon.
4) Use nuke script to clean phone.
5) Flash new ROM.
6) ???
7) Profit.

[Q] No firmware update possible - I9100 - GINGERBREAD.XWKF3

Hi there! I hope someone can enlighten me. I've never been able to update my SII since I got it, now it's almost a year ago in Belgium (so I'm stuck with GB 2.3.3). KIES says I've got the latest firmware version, and I get the same thing via FOTA.
Now it seems as if ICS provides some battery saving, among some other features, so I'd like to update the firmware (at least for once!)
I would like to avoid rooting, flashing and so on... although it seems as that's the most practical way to follow
So, thanks a lot in advance to anyone who could help me

OK, I've tried that and odin is not recognizing my phone... The firmware is there, I'm in download mode. I've switched usb ports... This is a bloody nightmare!
Last week I told a friend of ñine to try to update hers and she did it straight away through FOTA... and she had bought it only 6 months after me! What a bunch of wankers these Koreans!
friend of mine had the same problem with his s2, i found out his problem was caused by his phone being locked to a provider and because of this he had different kernel from me. he got update several months after me...
this because of provider's own extra apps on the phone...!
Just flash via Odin

Resetting to stock

I'm trying to reset my s2 st-i9100 back to stock (encrypted the phone, can't mount sd card, can't flash new roms, need to reset in order to get sd card access back)
I saw the thread with list of official firmwares I have no idea which I should download and flash, I won't lie, the descriptions don't make much sense to me.
Any help would be much appreciated

I'm actually trying to follow these instructions:
1) Use the All-in-One-Kit and flash your recovery back to stock
2) Boot into the bootloader and choose to "clear storage" and afterwards to reset to factory defaults.
3) Go back to the all-in-one-kit and flash a CWM recovery version again.
4) Reboot into recovery (CWM). Your /sdcard should now be mounted and visible.
I don't know what the all in one kit is so I'm just trying to find a stock rom to flash and hope that that will work

It does not matter, the rom is in English.
However you may feel like installing a United Kingdom or Nordic countries rom but don't download roms that
has modem XXLQ6 because they are known to brick devices.

ok thank you! I don't plan on keeping the rom anyway, just want to make sure nothing goes wrong
thanks again, after flashing multiple times (and formatting the internal storage) I've finally gotten it fixed. I think the problem I was having was to do with the phone encryption and the fact that I was trying to mount an external sd card when I didn't have one in the phone, flashing to stock, wiping and formatting and then reinstalling clockwork seemed to work, I then installed cm9 (although I've lost everything)
Thanks for the help!

[Q] Confused 1st time rooter

Hi all,
well, I've read the site rules and watched carefully the video... I fully admit that I'm a noob and I'm ready to live with this status for a while
Despite this, I'll anyway post my questions, and I'm really grateful in advance for any help.
I want to root my SGS2 because I would like to install some specific apps and why not to change the rom to have something more "serious".
My actual config is as follow:
GT-I9100
Android version: 4.0.4
Base band: I9100BULP8
Kernel version: 3.0.15-1056084 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT Thu Sep 13
Built: IMM76D.BULPG
I'm really not familiar with all terms used in the android space, I read several threads looking for a rooting manual and found quite good stuff. My actual worry is that I'm unable to find something (cf_root etc...) to use matching with my actual installed levels, can someone point me out on a sure rooted stuff and how to.
I don't want to have my phone out of order, this is the reason for this post. As stated I got confused and got lost with the wording used, ex: don't use this rom because if you have the eMMC chip with VYL00M (my case) etc... That's why thanks in advance !
Mo
you can flash siyah from this thread :

Lol the poor guy ain't good with technical words, you see your current version of kernel probably has a serious issue called a brick bug, it renders the phone unusable and recovery is a hassle in case of soft brick, hard brick situation is unrecoverable. Install got brick bug app by chainfire and check whether you are vulnerable so you can be more cautious, installing cm roms and certain other roms are safe, before flashing you must check whether it is effected by eMMc brick bug, and do not perform any erase activity if you are effected by the bug.
Peace
Edit : If you are effected install via Odin only. And this bug is present only in ICS Roms currently, if you are in gb you are safe, and be careful about flashing stock ICS use safe custom roms which has eMMc Cap erase disabled.

Hi,
thank you both for your answers, Siyah looks a good alternative. Is there a specific version to use ?
Is installing a CF-root a more straight forward process ? Assuming to find the right one...

Siyah is the best alternative for u ma8, as its brick bug free for sure and beeing the best kernel to root with gr8 success
u dwnld the tar file of siyah version 4.1.5 for S2 and flash the same by putting the file in 'PDA' section of 'ODIN' to root ur phone
u can google for lot of Youtube Video guides avilable for ODIN flash on ur s2
You can flash This from stock recovery (place the file in SD Card) and flash via stock recovery , then flash any custom Rom if you want to try JB , try NeatROM Lite v4.0 , after flashing this , you can just flash latest PhilZ Kernel v3.75 (Link in my signature )
Thanks for your help,
a last question (I hope) why the 4.1.5 version instead of the 5.0.1 ?
Stability issues ?
Have a good day

first root ur phone using v4.1.5 and then upgrade it to v5.0.1
i dislike the siyah v5.0.1..best to use siyah 4.1.5
so basically steps:
1. Install clockwork mode recovery(CWM) through recovery mode
2. Install siyah 4.1.5 by installing zip from sd card
3. now install any rom of your choice and enjoy
OK I am a NOOB too but need some clarification I just replaced my i9100 do to a brick bug so I gotta get this right. I just checked the replaced motherboard and sure enough it also has the bug SO, I need to know as it does seem quite clear already but only say 90% so to make it ABSOLUTELY CLEAR in order to avoid the bug I simply have to use siyah 4.1.5 and then I am free to flash whatever, GB + ICS + JB / 4.0.4 , 4.1.1 whatever the bug ONLY applys to my understanding (correct me here) with stock recovery and original ICS kernel.
NEXT NOOB question often ROM's pack in a kernel what things could bring back a dangerous situation. Flashing ROM's ? (maybe include a dangerous kernel or something ?).... 2: apps? can I ever factory data wipe safely again or with siyah after the previous protocol is it safe ? ?
:silly::silly:Also really Confused !?!?!?!:silly::silly:

Hey all,
just to let you know the status. I installed Siyah 4.1.5 using Odin as advised by Sun90 and everything went perfectly smooth.
Thank you !
I think my mext move will be first to install a good backup tool then to scout for other rom like cyanogen etc...
@futiless,
as I said using Odin, it's safe ! I read that dual boot is now available with the latest version of Siyah, that could be the answer for trying new roms while preserving a working one. For sure I'll test it.
Thanks again for your help

You don't need an external sd-card. Just (carefully) read the instructions in the specific Neatrom-thread. They're there to be followed, and they include every step. Good luck.

It's not a case of searching for a thread that matches your current version, but looking for a new rom with the version YOU want. So if you're on LPW, follow the instructions on the Neatrom-thread, flash the new rom you want and you're done.
And indeed, first read a little bit more, because most people brick their devices as a result of not knowing what they're doing.
Good luck.
Come to the dark side and custom rom it. If you have Cwm its a easy thing to do. Look up how to install a custom rom. I thought that dual booting was hard. if you read read read then it's easy. If you do want a custom rom look on goo.im app on play store.
