Update 5/13/13 - This is DerTeufel1980's thread for the kernel which works for both AOSP and TW. Dual-boot is not yet working yet though. - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2239453
FYI - DerTeufel1980 had a solid kernel working fairly quickly and has since worked on the recovery mods to allow installing two ROMs, etc. He has been working through a few items such as USB only working for charging, etc. He is making progress though.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
DerTeufel1980 has a dual-boot kernel working for the Samsung Galaxy line (Captivate, etc). With our help, he has been able to purchase a Note II to work on and I have been updating this thread with donation promises.
The post is below. You can look at his stats (a recognized developer with close to 13,000 thanks) and know that he can be trusted. Just to have him working on the Note II will be a great addition. I started the thread on the AT&T forum and then added it in the N7100/N7105 forum when I realized he lives in Germany. He and I have committed a fair amount of $ to make this happen so if you feel inclined to help out then it would be appreciated.

Update 5/25 - DerTeufel1980 has spent a while perfecting a universal kernel that works on AOSP and Sammy ROMs. The thread is here > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2239453
He had to work out some bugs that prevented troubleshooting the dual-boot problem. However, he recently returned to the dual-boot problem and has solved it. He has been able to dual-boot with AOSP as primary, Sammy as secondary and vice-versa. He is still fixing some recovery issues, etc but is hopeful that the release will be available tomorrow. This turned out to be much more challenging than other phones but that is probably why nobody else has accomplished it until he had a device to work on...
Re: Dual-boot donation thread - Currently > $306.00
Recognized developer and thanks don't really stand for much anymore.
There is a dev on another phone considered recognized and with way more thanks than that, and he so far has had two phones I know of handed too him and he possibly stole work on the first and released nothing but completely stock AOSP that took him months to make on the second phone while we had RIL and CM10 long before he got to the phone.
The above is why I don't donate until after work has been created anymore. If it is a dev I've seen produce I'd consider it.
I for one hate these.
Said my 2 cents.

I included the post where he produced a dual-boot kernel. I understand you must have been burned in the past. However, please do a bit of research before stating something so negative that does not apply in this particular instance. Nobody else (that I have seen) has produced a dual-boot kernel for a phone. He could easily decide to get a completely different phone so we would lose the benefit of his work on a phone we have. He can't provide the benefit without the phone to work on. I'm not trying to start a flame-war. I just think a lot of people would like this capability.

I am just not a fan of these period. I've never been burned. I refuse to donate for work undone.
This other dev had work done in the past. Proof of work.
Not to say this dev isn't worth having, I just refuse to donate to work not done.

There are also rules about this, specifically not doing it. I get you want it done, but I don't see the developer even coming in here and showing interest. That is a cause for concern.

What rules are you talking about? No moderator has sent any PM and I'm sure the threads have been seen at this point.
I will ask DerTeufel1980 to post in the thread if that makes a difference. He posted in the AT&T thread that I started with.

I am not going to pull up the precise verbiage, as you can do that. However there are explicit rules for no donations on work unseen. There have been many a fiery thread in this forum on that very detail and each one was closed. I don't care either way but if you want to alleviate people's concerns, get the dev to come in here and show interest and then get moderator approval for the thread. Don't be surprised if it gets shut down though.

Hi, What do you want me to ask?
Of course I am interested in this project. Otherwise RichMD would not have opened the thread.
As I wrote in the other thread, i was going to get me a nexus 4 within the coming months. If RichMD would not have asked, I would not have thought about the note 2.
Regarding dual boot, it took me nearly 2 month, to figure out how all the things need to be modified (especially the recovery) for a user friendly implementation of dualboot. Now that I know all this, it shouldn't be very hard to implement it to another phone.
Obviously, to make changes to the recovery /initramfs and kernel itself, I need a device to test with.

Thanks DerTeufel,
I think many of us would like to see this capability on the Note 2.
I don't know if it would work but I am particularly hoping that I can have an unrooted "work" ROM as the "secondary" so I can use my enterprise Good email client. I am hoping it will be somewhat like dual-booting my kindle-fire where the "secondary" has to be packaged for "alternate" partitions and then have the other ROM be what I can flash various ROMs that come out. Even if the dual-boot does not work like that initially, I would want it regardless and I am guessing other DEVs could help expand on it.

Sorry, but I can't say anything about this now. It depends on the drivers needed for stock and aosp based roms.
For sure you can run two stock roms or two aosp roms.

Dual boot is so much easier than backing up and restoring Nandroids. However unless we can dual boot Touchwiz and AOSP then it's pointless for me. I want to have AOSP, but I'm not willing to give up multi window, it's just way to useful. Dual boot is the next best thing to AOSP having multi window (which I don't see happening anytime soon)

I totally agree. Having tw and aosp would be the perfect combination. As I don't own this device (yet), I am not very familiar with it. Does one need a different kernel for aosp and tw roms?

If we get dual-boot functionality then maybe it can be improved over time to support AOSP and TW ROMS. Maybe that will never happen but it certainly won't if we don't start with getting some of the items resolved like recovery, etc that DerTeufel1980 has worked through. Personally, I would like to have a TW ROM configured for work with the battery hogging Good client and corresponding password restrictions, etc and a personal TW ROM that I can setup however I want. I don't consider nandroid swaps a viable option personally.

i dont swap roms enough to warrant dual boot...and if we cant dual boot between touchwiz and aosp then it seems pointless.

that's totally fine with me. no one is forced to donate, and i am not angry, if one tells me, he does not want to donate.
i never planned myself to get this device, and i never could pay for it (my girlfriend would kill me, if i spent my money for a phone instead of our kids ).
if this thread is going to get me the device at anytime, i would proudly develop my kernel for it. if not, i'll most probably buy a used nexus 4 in 2-3 months

Hello guys,
I am working very hard to bring for this Christmas SensatioN 3 theme along with SensatioN ROM 2 for SGS 2. I don't have much time for development, but I try to dev as much as I can when I have time.
I had a lot of requests for supporting other phones and I said I will do it a long but I haven't got the time to do it.
As I don't have time to support multiple phones, I will need someone to take over the port for this phone. If is there anyone here who has worked before on theming and he believes that he can port the the SensatioN theme exactly as it is (not some images copied from frameworks, a little layout changes and done), then please send me a PM.
I will make a team and I will give you all the resources you will need along with my support when I am available for making this port right.
Now, I am working to bring SensatioN 3 on SGS2 for Christmas and I am a lot behind my original schedule, but I think no one will be mad here if they receive this theme in january.
I will make a donation fund for SensatioN team for users who would like to donate.
Best Regards,
Crysis21

No, it's not necessary because everyone can hellraise a rom. I don't know too much about the hellraiser but in my previous experience from i9000/captivate/vibrant ports from a phone to another with just kernel/modem/key layout adjustments worked, but a lo of users complained about different ****s and so on... that's why the question is:
do you have any problem when you hellraise a rom? because if you do have problems, then it's necessary to port the rom(by port i mean recreating the features i implemented based on an original at&t rom, not just changin a damn kernel)

Crysis hellraise(should) make your ROM completely useable for our phones. Takes all of 1 minute to drag drop zip and then flash and test to make sure 100% working. That would be the easiest option that way when you release an update for i9100 you could just drag hellraise package into that update and release. Fairly easy process

no, I haven't spoke to Cezar since my i9000 days of deving. Last time I know he was very busy with his job

As far as things that might be broken when Hellraising - see the Hellraiser thread for details. I try to track known issues.
Main things I can think of at this point are:
1) STOP_APP_SWITCHES protection level is set to 2 (signature) on I9100 ROMs. It's set to 3 (signature and system) on I777 ROMs. This causes force closes when tapping NFC tags with NDEF data. I haven't figured out how to fix this one yet.
2) Permissions get clobbered routinely for /data/misc/wifi, preventing tethering settings from being stored on XXKI3-based ROMs and many other 2.3.5 bases, however I've heard this is a problem for I9100 users even when running on their own devices.
FYI SensatioN 1.7 was Hellraiser's first test case.
As I always appreciate having new development and another choice for our awesome phone, this is not a rom yet, so Im going to move this to General. Please feel fre to carry on and conduct business as needed in this thread.
Since Task650 will be overseeing this when its ready, he can make his own thread... that way he can keep his own updates and thread updated as he sees fit.
Thank you all for cooperating.
I can't wait to see the outcome of the new sensation3 theme. The sensation ROM is favorite from the i9100. Does anyone know what the base for it will be for our phones?

Last update for CM10 is 29.12 ?
And it went straight from a nightly to "stable" build.
It is quite silly to abandon one project if yet to be completed abruptly for another.
So like 10.1 will only get three quarters completion and dumped when 4.2.2 aosp code is released?
This is quite frankly utter madness.
A very good enough reason perhaps why ios versions are better polished.
Sadly disappointing.

nothing was abandoned. no stable release exists for this tab suite (until all bugs are squashed) as of yet. i purposefully switched to cm-10.1 for nightly on this tab suite (after various feedback/observations from people).
either move, or wait till the remaining bugs are squashed (first in cm-10.1, which i will then also try my best to apply to cm10) for a possible stable release.
if you want faster progress, start working on it. any help which re-mediates bugs which are device specific are welcomed. this is not closed source. all of this is out in the open. if you want it, make it happen.

Please go to ios if you expect things to be done for you. This is not constructive at all considering that you are bringing nothing to the table. As pershoot said, it is his passion is why we see anything past the gimped TW ICS that was official release by Samsung. Not only is Samsung done with our Tab, so is Google. pershoot worked his butt off to bring compatibility to the code that dropped support for us.

We all most certainly appreciate the passions of Pershoot and his work.

Initiates itself into the hands of the global user community.
The community becomes dependant upon its completion. This is an ethical responsibility.
All reputation and notoriety is won or lost in this human principle.

Did you seriously just say this?
Read the post linked in my signature please.
One should never feel they become 'dependent' on whether or not a developer who is not being paid for his time and does this work for fun 'finishes' development on a ROM based on your personal standard. If you feel that way you should probably not be modding your devices in the first place. XDA does not exist so you can imply its users have an ethical responsibility to give you what you need to make your device cooler than someone else's... It exists to inspire you to learn how to do this stuff and give back. It is a hobby, not a responsibility, and you acknowledge that fact when you flash the work.
Honestly, if you want to see something done and don't feel like waiting for the developer to address your particular concern, you have two options:
1) be prepared to donate funds in the hundreds of dollars per hour to pay the dev's bills and maybe the dev will focus on your needs
2) do it yourself...no one's stopping you

you went from asking to a diatribe about philosophies and how I need to live up to one's expectations. put yourself in my shoes, then re-read what you wrote and the tact that was followed.
while i'm a very patient and passionate person, i only have one brain, two hands and only so much free time.
as stated prior, roll up your sleeves and start working on it. that is how you can make a difference and understand what a person like me goes through supporting X amount of users across X amount of devices.
Firstly, this question is in no way intended to insult JamieD81 and I apologize in advance for any insult unintentionally implied.
I am running Jamie's builds of ParanoidKangDroid and am impressed with it's stability, as I was with all of the previous ROMs that he has shared with us.
Due to my love of PA's Hybrid Tablet mode (Jellybeer's take on it leaves the clock too small and disproportionate for my tastes), and the desire to have the latest version of Android I was running the ROM that is banned here (from what I took to be due to the builder passing off other's work as their own).
A not too thorough glance through System Settings leads me to think that ParanoidKangDroid is the ROM that was being plagiarized.
Am I anywhere near correct? If not no big deal, I've got a ROM that is more stable than that one, and comes from a ROM builder of great reputation. If it is the properly credited & branded version of the plagiarized ROM, then it is great to see a PROPER version on here.
Its not plagiarized, its built from pk's sources which roms are on the d2 devices, reason the roms were taken off from my understanding is between manel and a mod, not anything to do with roms in this section.
Me and manel have both been heavily warned in the past *note my attitude change on xda for the last while? There is a reason for that, I took the mods serious
Hopefully that clears it up a bit for you.

I think the OP might be speaking of JellyBam, not Vanilla Rootbox. Wasn't the JellyBam dev trying to pass off the work as his own?

Jamie, I am in no way implying the you have plagiarized anything, ever. I don't even know what the deal is with Manel. As the poster above me had correctly supposed, the plagiarizer is the Jellybam team. Which I am reluctant to give any credence to.
Your PROPER build of paranoidkangdroid is very similar to the improperly branded works of those that I mentioned in the previous paragraph which led me to believe that they misappropriated that work as their own.
Again, i regret any and all negative implications that you have taken from my first post and have the utmost respect for your works and your activity here.
My Note would be next to useless without your efforts.

there is being politically correct... then there is just nonsense talk to fill space.
All it takes is 1 accusation FROM THE DEV HAVING HIS WORK STOLEN.
the ACCUSER is still on xda to release his roms as he wishes
the ACCUSED was BANNED from xda....

Facts do not
Certainly did not mean to start a war and this is my last thought on this.
You are correct...facts are facts....but.....does anyone know ALL the facts?
Let's say, just for arguments sake, you have a set of 10 facts. All, of which, are true. When pondering on a solution you leave facts number 2, 4, 6 and 8 out of your equation. You are subject to reach an entirely different conclusion.
Had an old boss one time that would always tell me, "Son, just remember...there are always three sides to every story...yours, mine and the truth somewhere in the middle. Our job is to find that middle."
And as an arbiter for many years dealing with union negotiations, his advice served me well.
Go in peace, my Friend.....after all, it is just an electronic device!

The Galaxy S4 was finally able to dualboot using the DoMaco.switch for the galaxy S4, but it only works for GSM devices. Is there any way we can tinker with this in order for it to work for us Verizon galaxy s4 customers?
by the way, heres the link:

Here is a second link from a developer for the international GS4, does anyone know how to manipulate these towards our advantage?

I'd never use it personally, I have no use to switch ROM's. All I need is AOKP.
It's kind of a cool idea but I just wouldn't ever really see anyone needing to really do this much if at all. You most likely either like touchwiz or like stock.

Also, I would think this may be easy to manipulate. Say, having two roms onto a pone that can dual boot, not just restricted to Google edition and touchwiz
If I could dual-boot rather than having to go through the whole Nandroid backup/restore process every time I want to try something new, I'd be a lot more likely to dabble in CM nightlies and the like. This'd be great.

Exactly! It's so nice to be able to switch back to your trusty DD with not much more than a reboot. There was an app called BootManager that I used on my EVO3D. You could boot as many ROMs as your SD could hold. It was great to play with CM, MIUI and others and reboot to Sense when I needed stability and reliability.
EDIT: just looked at the article. One data set is totally awesome! I wonder how easily you can swap the #2 ROM and leave the data untouched.
Do I smell ubuntu touch possibilities?

Thanks for the link. That could potentially work with some small tweaks. However that won't help me at all. Too much relies on your specific kernel and ROM versions.
The only way a tool like this is truly useful for ME is if I can dual boot anything I want for both slots. Whether that's 2 aosp, 2 tw, or 1 aosp and Ubuntu.
I really don't think either of these would work for my development purposes at this point. But I'm hopefully we'll get a dual boot option soonish.
I wouldn't even mind just a straight up text based grub style boot loader. Which would be no problem at all right now if Verizon didn't lock us up. :-/

Seems like the edits would be pretty straight forward, right? Basically changing install locations or would the bootloader business change things? even this form of dual boot would be awesome IMHO.

It's not what I'd consider real dual boot. You are allocating cache space for the second ROM which mostly is fine since we have a 2gb cache partition. It shouldn't be that hard unless he coded it specifically for a single boot loader with an argument that will only allow it to run if it sees a specific board property or something. But that would be a huge waste of time since it seems like all those functions could be accomplished from within the stock environment.
But without dling it that's all speculation

Edit: I will not be participating in this bounty any longer because I have pre-ordered the Note 3. I don't know if there is a way to transfer control of this thread to another user, if there is, please PM me if you want to take the responsibility. In addition, @mse_uk is also withdrawing from the bounty and can no longer provide the Note II demo unit, although he is maintaining his monetary pledge. I will also hold to my pledge as well. I hope you guys get root and a decent ROM very soon.
Why are we creating this bounty?
Coming from a T-Mobile Galaxy Note, I know how sad it can be when there is very little development for our phones. The Galaxy Mega 6.3 is a very good phone, but it needs some development to make it a great phone. We love our phones, but would love them that much more if we had the latest Android version. So what we need is a stable version of CyanogenMod for the Galaxy Mega 6.3. It must be CM 10.2 (Android 4.3) After considering the responses to this thread, it has been agreed that either a stable 10.1 or 10.2 ROM would be welcome. As an added bonus, member mse_uk has graciously offered his Galaxy Note II demo unit (i.e. fully functional, but minus the radio) to be added to the bounty provided that the developer provides a source repository for his work so that future development can be continued on the project.
What qualifies as a 'stable' ROM?
By stable, I mean the following must be working properly:
Calls
Data (including 3G/4G or LTE where available)
Camera (back and front)
Audio (speakers and earpiece)
Bluetooth
Wifi
GPS
Vibration
Rotation
Auto Brightness
Notification and LED (back/menu) lights
Android Keyboard
USB connection
What are the criteria for collecting the bounty?
In order to collect the bounty, the following conditions must be met:
1. Post in this thread that you are interested in the bounty and that you are working on getting it done (this will help avoid problems later).
2. Post your final version of the ROM in this thread so that pledgers can test and verify the stability of the ROM.
3. Provide the source repository for the ROM so that further development can continue.
Once these three conditions are met, the developer will be paid through their Paypal account and the Galaxy Note II will be shipped.
What can you do to make this a reality?
If you want to add to the bounty (and lets face it, you all do, lol) then post in this thread with your pledge, which I will add to this first post and the total. Any support that this gets is good, so even if you can only pledge a little, please do it. (As of now, I am leaving out pledges who are asking specifically about the AT&T version, because i'm not sure that their phone will be able to take advantage of any ROMs because of the current state of the bootloader. If that changes, I will include them in the total).
I will update this thread to keep everyone informed of the total pledged.

Techngro.....$25
mse_uk........$25
Warnahly.....$25
Krijs............$25

To be honest with you, I didn't consider the different versions. The international versions (i9200 and i905) have been out for a few weeks, so that is the one that most of us have been dealing with, but I know that the AT&T version (i527) was just announced and will be in stores soon (if not already).
I am pretty sure that the internals of all of the versions are the same, so it may be that one ROM will be good for all phones (except for the radios/modems). But we'll need a dev to actually confirm that.
I'll leave your pledge off until we can figure that out. Thanks for showing interest anyway.

@mse_uk: Thanks for making this available for the bounty, i'm sure it will peak a few dev's interest.
@everyone else: I wonder if there's a way to advertise our bounty on XDA. Dev's probably won't know about it until they come to this forum, which they probably won't do if they don't have a Mega or aren't thinking about getting one.
Maybe i'll tweet at XDA about the bounty with a link to this thread.
I think this bounty is unrealistic and the responses or lack of from developers will tell. The bounty is asking for a fully functional 10.2 rom with everything working. Right now, 10.2 is still in beta for the Note 2 and even when it gets out of beta and becomes a daily driver rom, there will still be some stuff that needs to be ironed out (Bluetooth, camera, low in call volume, etc...) if the past rom development is any indication.
Basically what I'm saying is I highly doubt any dev would take on the above requirements which is not realistic to complete and all for $75 and a phone that can't make calls.
You may want to revise the bounty for whoever can get CM to boot on the Mega 6.3 first. Then we should be able to get roms ported over. Then god willing, with the Megas going to the US, more devs get interested and develop for this phone.
At present only three people have pledged to a bounty, next week we could still have three, similarly we could have twenty which would be more appealing to somebody with the skills. I'm contributing towards a bounty because I just don't have the skills to do it myself even though i am giving it my best shot.
My latest failure after starting from scratch (again):

The Mega is still a fairly new device, and a niche device at that. But I don't see any problem with having a bounty for CM 10.2, even if all you say is true. The same time/effort that would be dedicated to any other device could be dedicated to this device as well. And the sooner we get someone working on the latest version, the less time we have to wait to get a stable version. I would rather have the effort put towards the latest version with slow progress, than someone quickly porting CM 9.
But perhaps your suggestion of having bounties for different stages does make sense. we could have a small bounty for getting 10.2 to boot, and then a larger bounty for a test version and a stable version. If people think that is a good idea, I can set it up that way.
As for the current level of the bounty, yeah it's small, but as I said, the Mega is still a fairly new device, and is just hitting US carriers now. It might take a few weeks, but as more people get their devices and seek to expand its capabilities, they will come here and hopefully pledge something towards the bounty. I think everyone who is participating knows that this won't be an overnight effort.
Edit: btw, did you come here because you have a Mega and were just browsing the forum, or did you see my tweet about this bounty?
I have a mega and note 2 so I switch back and forth. Unfortunately time is not on our side. The note 3 will be coming out next month and devs will be moving on the the latest and greatest. What we need is for devs to have a vested interest in developing for the mega even though it isn't popular. I personally love slimbean ROMs. They are well programmed *and* they support older devices as they continue to do great things for new devices.
What I'm trying to say is that for the mega to have a chance of getting custom roms , one of the devs would have to have the phone to maintain it.
So instead of waiting until a dev does all the work getting a working ROM and collecting the bounty, we should contact one of them eg. Slimbean lead dev asking if he could include the mega among supported devices and send him enough money to buy one himself.
