started when i began to flash ROMS (well from what i can remember) is it something im not aware of or are the ROMS have settings i dont know about?? running viperDNA right now coming from superchareged hatka 320 both great ROMS but i cant figure out how to get USB to mount to my PC any help greatly appreciated
Did you open up "My Computer" and see if the phone's storage was listed there?
Also, try switching USB ports if you can.
Yep doesn't show up...it says it "computer is installing files" and then comes up as failed...never did this before to me so I'm just wondering if it's as simple as a setting option or maybe cause of ROM but I honestly don't think it's the ROM thing

1. While phone is connected, go in to your device manager and locate where your handset is. Usually under Android phone or Portable Devices. Once there right click on the device and uninstall.
2. Now disconnect phone and reinstall HTC sync or the HTC Drivers if you have them separately.
(If your phone was not listed in device manager than uninstall any drivers you have in your programs via control panel and follow step 2)
*Note* If you are in fact installing the drivers by way of HTC sync then after installation is complete, remember to remove HTC sync from your programs via control panel, your HTC Drivers will not be touched.

I have 2 S3 one will connect to computer and show up as MTP device the other will connect but won't show up as MTP device.
they are running the exact same rom LIH installed from the same file
NOW I just finished debloating the second trouble S3 so I am thinking I must have removes something critical to MTP
now I did backup everything I removed but I don't SEE anything that screams out at me "hey you need me" to use MTP
any ideas? I don't want to reset the rom if I can help it too so long to get it all set up plus since I have no idea what I removed to cause this problem I have no way to prevent myself doing it again accidentally.
You just need to manually download the drivers and install manually, or try a different USB port

I was not aware their were drivers for mtp for android to install on the phone ?? that must be one of the things I uninstalled in rom tool box. what program is it ? I mean I know there are a few entries with the letters MTP in it and I left those alone
I think the last poster meant install drivers on your PC.... personally I wouldn't know but I think that would make sense.... just try to reinstall the Rom or play around with the other S3 to see if you have deleted something you have missed
Hope this helps

oh I am pretty certain its something I removed (I removed "MORE" on this S3 than the other one) but none of what I removed screams at me in neon "you need this for mtp to work" hehehe
yeah the PC's are fine. remember 2 S3's one works fine other don't which means its the phone not the PC (and yeah I tried 2 XP machines and a Windows 7 machine)
its pretty clear to me I "uninstalled" something in rom toolbox it wants. I would prefer to figure out what SO I don't remove that something again
finally. installed the new LJ7 rom and the phone is now visible. I really wish I knew what I removed to break it so I could avoid that file in the future
Hi, I'm on the standard HTC software, so no rooting, no custom ROMs, etc.
In the most recent update (a few weeks ago), the device was taken from (I think) Android 4.0.4 to 4.1.2, so from ICS to JB. However, in doing that, the ability to access the SD card via USB mass-storage seems to have vanished and has been replaced with MTP. This means that I can no longer access the filesystem on the SD card via USB, which I do with Picasa, DoubleTwist, as well as the audio system in my car.
HTC tell me to install the (rather useless and bloated) HTC Sync Manager, but this doesn't give me what I need. They say there is no way to go BACK to the previous version of the OS.
So, my wise friends, I'm asking if anyone has any idea as to how to solve this problem and again get back to being able to see the SD card as a USB mass-storage device.
Many thanks for your help.

Possibly that can work, but it's not going to help me in the car! I need the SD card filesystem to be visible, as it was before.
The thing is, that HTC removed UMS completely on JB in favor of MTP. MTP allows you to connect your device to a PC without the need to unmount before removing as it uses push / pull commands directly. So if your device in the car supports MTP, you are good to go. Otherwise, you can try to connect it via 3,5 mm audio clinch cable if your car radio has an auxialiary port for that.
well, theoretically you CAN go back to ICS, but you have to unlock your bootloader (might be a problem when it comes to warranty), flash a custom-recovery (for jellybean hboot 1.25) and flash a custom- or stock-rom based on ics.
i recommend ckpv5's myONEdx RC4.0 FX+, imho its the best and most bug-free ics custom-rom.

Sorry, my bad. I thought your issue is with the PC.
go here i have a guide of how to make usb mass storage work
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2318816
It just stopped working. When I plug into PC, it just says it's charging? No idea what I could have done. I even tried restoring my backed up stock rom, but that made no difference. Tried two different PC's. What settings should I look for? Can I get to it via reboot, and pressing something. I seem to remember one time when my phone wouldn't boot, that I still had USB access.

If you have CWM installed then yes, you *should* be just fine. In mounts and storage menu, the last option i think is "mount USB storage" and it will show up in windows as removable storage then. If this doesn't work I can guess two things, one, your cable only has the power pins still connected, and not data. So try another cable. Or, on the USB connector inside your phone its not connecting both data pins, only power.
Should be able to visually check for damage to the micro usb port. Best of luck.

not if there is an option to enable storage, I haven't used twrp in forever, so I can't tell you definitively. You could download CWM on your device and flash it in TWRP though.
USB port appears fine. Tried different cable that works on my son's phone and it still didn't work. Is there an app that is good for troubleshooting usb connections someone could recommend. Thanks.

According to google TWRP does have an option to mount usb storage, have you tried seeing if windows can recognize your phone storage in recovery?
An alternative solution could be to use a shared folder in windows and ES file explorer to connect to that share, and send and receive files that way, so at least you have some ability to manage the device. *through WiFi on the phone to the LAN that your PC is on*
I would suggest deleting all the drivers for your device in windows but you already said you tried on a second computer. I'm stumped on this one at the moment.

Thanks for the suggestions. So far, none have worked. I wonder if there is an android app, that can check if the usb ports are working or not?
I had the same problem on SlimBean, Beanstalk and maybe another I can't remember. Switching to dvhexer's CM 10.2 fixed it. I THINK my problem was that those other ROMs require the phone to have been on stock 4.1.2 before flashing and dvhexer's CM 10.2 doesn't. I'm not sure, but that seems likely to me. In any case, make a backup of your current ROM and flash CM 10.2 to see if that fixes the issue. I really like Beanstalk but the ability to connect to my PC is vital to me so I'm on 10.2 for now. Hope this helps.

Have the same problem :/ it randomly happened to me, haven't found any sort of fix.
I think I'm going to go back to stock, take it to a service center and say, "it aint workin". Still under warranty. Doubt they'll do much snooping if it appears to be running stock Rom.
Can you even flash back to stock? I tried flashing it once and it wouldn't boot, completely wiped everything and reinstalled and it still wouldn't boot, so I'm stuck on custom roms apparently with no connection to pc so no lgnpst possible

Hi. For some reason my computer just stopped recognizing my phone. It recognizes the internal memory, but not the sd card. I have the drivers installed as it has worked in the past. This is very frustrating as I'm not able to copy over ROMS, music, etc. Any advice?

Obvious :
Uninstall drivers
Reboot
Let them reinstall. If on windows, and still not working. Update driver, point manually to win-user-appdata-common-find the driver

Running Win7.
I just had the same problem a few weeks ago. Even after updating the drivers it still wouldn't work. Toggling between the modes didn't help. Restarted the computer and phone got me nothing. I restarted the phone a few more times and toggled between the modes before it finally worked. Haven't had an issue. Pretty sure it was just a glitch and self-resolved.
Make sure your phone is set to MTP.

One thing I forgot to mention...lately, my phone will stop recognizing my sd card and SIM. I have to eject them and reinsert at least once a day. This started happening right after my computer stopped recognizing the phone and seeing the sd card. Could be related, maybe not. Just throwing it out there. Won't hurt to eject the sd card and reinsert.

Completely unistalled or just dragged to the trash can?
Important! You must uninstall Kies for Mac before running Android File Transfer. Otherwise, the application will not connect to your device.
To uninstall Kies, download the Kies for Mac software by visiting the Kies website.
From Finder, click Go > Downloads > KiesMac_xxxx.dmg > Uninstall.
Why do you even need to connect your phone to the mac to root? Unless you have a 64gb sd card your going to have to format the sd card by taking it out of your phone first.
Did all those things don't have 64 gig SD card so how do I start this root without connecting I'm not a noob to custom recovery always read and with this Mac junk these phones really do have major compatibility issue

The card just needs to be formatted correctly.
Once that is done you need to extract the files to the root of the card.
You should be able to format the card in the phone.
Take the card out of the phone and use an adapter to directly connect to the Mac.
That's what I did.
