This a short list of frequently asked questions in this device forum and the answers often given as a response. It should serve as a starting point for gathering knowledge and finding solutions to many common problems. Please only post in this thread with feedback on how to improve this document. Do not post "Thank you" type responses. If you have additional questions or require more help, try to find an existing thread or create your own. Do not use this as a general help thread.

Q1: How do I ask a question so I'm not called a "noob"?While you may see many questions asked in the Development section, PLEASE be aware this is not the place for questions.
Remember to use the search found at the top of the forum. There is also a search within each section. Example click on Q&A HERE. In the upper right you will now see two search's. At the top it says Search All Forums and a little further down you will see Search This Forum. Enter your search criteria in the Search This Forum to get info from this section. The search at the top will look through the entire forum.
Please read as much as you can prior to doing anything with your device.
Make sure your question has not been answered in the OP (Opening Post) of each section of Development
Search Q&A for threads that may have been started for a particular rom.
Take the time to summarize at the best of your knowledge what you are experiencing as problem. (i.e. Phone, stock or rooted, etc.)
Q2: Thanks Button? At XDA, we have a large number of users that work tirelessly to provide the community with great ROMs, software, advice, and support, and they often do it asking nothing in return except for the occasional donation. Often times it’s reasonable to add a “thanks” in a reply if someone did great work. Trouble is, posts that say “thanks” can quickly clog up a thread and detract from the more in-depth conversation that is going on.
XDA have rolled out an interesting feature on the forum: the Thanks button. Quite simply, if you appreciate someone’s post, give them a Thanks by using the button in the far left position in the User field. Each user is limited to eight Thanks per day (There is a count down from each Thanks you hand out, not the group. Therefore, if you give a Thanks at 17:00, then at or around 17:00 the following day, you will have another one to replace that one), and you cannot undo a Thanks, so only reserve your Thanks for when you really mean it. There are several features in place to prevent people from taking advantage of the system for example, you cannot Thanks yourself. XDA discourage users from soliciting Thanks and they should never be required in return for providing replies or anything else.
Remember, if someone took the time to help you, a Thanks should be given freely and without pressure / obligation to this person, this feature was implement exactly for that purpose
Q3: How do I install ADB and make use of it?Just follow this tutorial [Tutorial] How to install Android SDK/ADB tool & HTC's drivers [BEGINNER FRIENDLY]
Q4: What is ADB? Everything you need to know is well explained HERE.
Q5: Which ROM/KERNEL/BATTERY AUTONOMY is the best? There is no perfect/best ROM. It's all based on personal preference. Do your own test and be your own judge.
Q6: Where should I start to root my phone? You will first need to unlock your bootloader, install a custom recovery, then rooting will be possible. Please read this HOW TO by hasoon2000. His All-In-One Toolkit can be found Here. (Take the time to thank him if he helped you!)
Q7: Why does the sound of my Bluetooth is so bad, how can I fix this?Unfortunately to fix this issue you need a rooted phone until HTC release an update to correct this, if it's the case then simply apply the BT Call Fix solution provided by Steve0007 (Take the time to thank him if he helped you!)
Q8: How to mount USB storage in Recovery? The HTC ONE X+ is a data/media device which is why this function is non-working. More explanation can be found HERE.
Q9: HELP! My phone is boot looping! You need to extract the boot.img from the ROM you just flashed and to place it in the Platform-Tools folder of SDK. While your phone is boot looping, hold the VOLUME down rocker + POWER button it should reboot in bootloader. Plug in your USB cable coming from your computer and flash the boot.img
Start with this command : fastboot devices (you should see your serial at the screen)
Write this command (if serial is successful) : fastboot flash boot boot.img (Enter)
Clear cache with : fastboot erase cache (Enter)
Reboot with : fastboot reboot (Enter)
Your phone should boot with your new ROM, let your phone sit for ~10 minutes before setting it up.
Q10: How can I achieve S-OFF with my ONE X+? Unfortunately, this is not a possibility for the moment with this device. This means you have to flash a specific boot.img manually, no RADIO can be flash. Some kernels can be flashed also manually. The reason is simple, no Devs tools are available for the TEGRA chipset (the chipset of the HTC ONE X+) to do so, actually this is only possible on devices with a Qualcomm chipset. You can follow the evolution of this feature in the development thread located HERE
Q11: How do I enter Recovery Mode?
Make sure Fast boot is Disabled via Settings -> Power -> Fast boot (unticked).
Phone unplugged and in Power Off mode.
Press and hold Volume down while pressing the Power button.
Once in Bootloader navigate with the volume rocker and validate your choice with the Power button.
Q12: What does MD5 checksum means? MD5 digests have been widely used in the software world to provide some assurance that a transferred file has arrived intact. For example, file servers often provide a pre-computed MD5 (known as Md5sum) checksum for the files, so that a user can compare the checksum of the downloaded file to it. A simple HOW TO is located HERE.
Q13: I've been asked for a logcat, how I do this?Simply read the Logcat tutorial provided by paxChristos (Take the time to thank him if he helped you!)
Q14: Are International ROM and AT&T / TELUS ROM inter-compatible? NO! The INTERNATIONAL (enrc2b) version does not have the radio feature called LTE unlike AT&T / TELUS (evitareul) versions. It is important to select the correspondent ROM version of your phone. If you flash the wrong version, your phone will simply boot loop endlessly. To resolve this you need to flash the correspondent version. You will probably need to use the method called sideload to transfert a valid ROM on your SD Card, please refer yourself to Q15 to do so.
More details about : International specs vs AT&T / TELUS specs (see NETWORK).
Q15: How can I ADB Sideload a ROM to my SD Card? Some situations require the sideloading method to be able to transfer a ROM on the internal memory of your phone, here are some cases :
You flashed a wrong version and your phone is endlessly looping.
You accidentally wiped your SD Card and you already have wiped your phone's ROM.
You wiped your ROM and forgot to transfer a custom ROM.
Or any variant of the previous reason.
Whoever told you to use ADB Sideload.
Here is how to do it :
You absolutely need the latest TWRP RECOVERY (download links below) to use ADB Sideload, at this moment I don't think it is working with CWM RECOVERY...
Download or locate the desired ROM on your computer.
Rename it with a short name.
Place it in the sub-folder : Platform-tools of your SDK folder.
Reboot in RECOVERY
Set the device into ADB sideload mode. In TWRP you do this by going to Advanced then ADB Sideload Slide to start.
From the command line, type : adb sideload your_rom_name.zip
It can take several minutes to complete the transfer.
╠►TWRP2 Recovery download links : For International model look HERE and for AT&T / TELUS model look HERE.
Q16: How many charge cycles does it take for a ROM to settle down after flashing?By general experience it is around [email protected] full battery cycles. Which means you have to charge your battery to 100% and then run it down to about ~5% before you start charging again. After the 3rd - 4th cycle your battery should start to improve.
Q17: My battery is draining fast when my screen is off, why?It is most likely caused by an application that is active in the background, thus draining your battery, learn what is a wakelock.
Q18: I need an original RUU, where can I find them?
For the International (ENRC2B) version have a look HERE
For AT&T/TELUS (EVITARE_UL) version look HERE
Q19: Several HTC Widgets are missing, how can I fix this?Go to Settings → Apps → All → Navigate to 'HTC Sense' and tap on 'Clear data'.
Q20: Help!!! I am stuck in bootloader without a ROM installed, what should I do?Simply follow this guide to load a custom ROM onto your HOX+ device if you have bootloader access.
Q21: Where I can find latest TWRP Recovery?Simply follow those TWRP2 Recovery download links : For International model look HERE and for AT&T / TELUS model look HERE.
Q22: Everything is working great but I have no Data working?Probably your APN's are missing.
If you follow this path : Settings -> click on Mobile Data left part -> Access point names -> APN's
Do you have a black screen with only APN'S & Menu on top? If yes, then you need to create an APN to regain your DATA access, just follow these instructions...
How to create an APN... There's two in fact on my HOX+ on TELUS network :
Navigate to Settings -> click on Mobile Data left part -> Access point names -> APN's -> Menu -> New APN -> write in the correspondent field the following for the first one
Name: TELUS SP
APN: sp.telus.com
Proxy: <Not set>
Port: <Not set>
Username: <Not set>
Password: <Not set>
Server: <Not set>
MMSC: http://aliasredirect.net/proxy/mmsc
MMS Proxy: 74.49.0.18
MMS Port: 80
MMS Protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC: 302
MNC: 220
APN type: default,hipri,mms
Now Save this via the Menu
For the second one again clicking on Menu -> New APN
Name: TELUS ISP
APN: isp.telus.com
Proxy: <Not set>
Port: <Not set>
Username: <Not set>
Password: <Not set>
Server: <Not set>
MMSC: <Not set>
MMS Proxy: <Not set>
MMS Port: <Not set>
MMS Protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC: 302
MNC: 220
Authentication type: <Not set>
APN type: dun
*N.B. ISP is related for tethering mode.
Save via Menu, you are done, just make sure that the first APN is ticked on the APN's screen. Ah yeah I almost forgot, it is always better to reboot your phone after setting up your APN's. It's free anyway!

Q24: Where I can find the original AT&T and TELUS recovery.img? For AT&T model look HERE and for the TELUS model look HERE.

Known Issues with no solution yet
What about also adding a thread (or another reply on here) for "known issues" with no known solution or something of the sort. For example:
-Multiple and/or Delayed Texts (AT&T only) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2156386
-Headphone button calls previous call, regardless of any apps downloaded (like Headset Button Control).
-Google Contacts Sync always shows a "double arrow." - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2170659

If someone with perfectly working AT&T (or any other carrier for the LTE HOX+ EVITARE_UL only) APN's settings can send them to me by PM, it would be much appreciate. I will then add them to the FAQ
TIA

as far as i know there's no update for non international version of HOX+ yet, you will have to wait until it's released.

Just to add more for Q18.
The link provided there will direct you to the new link where the files are already moved. But if you want to go directly to download the link, you can go HERE for the international and HERE for the AT&T.
However, downloading RUU from those links are not resumable. I have found one where you can resume your download since it is quite big but only for international version (ENRC2B) and 1 RUU for EvitaRE. But i believe it is updated so there will be more added in the future. You can try it HERE

[Q]Can i revert to Rogers baseband on 2.3.3

I know i asked this few places but mostly getting ignored.
Anyone know if it is possible to go back to 2.1.55 baseband for rogers if i did the 2.3.3 gingerbread manually?
I don't want to stay on 2.1.71 if possible because i am not getting 3g any longer.
thank you.
shameless bump, i want to know, i can not use 3g anymore defeat the whole purpose of update to 2.3.3
I'm using Rogers x10a, and installed the 2.3.3 (non-rooted version).
My baseband is 2.1.71 and I'm getting 3G without any issues.
have you confirmed your settings in:
Settings -> Wireless & Network Settings -> Mobile networks -> Network Mode
Mine is set to: GSM/WCDMA preferred.
Also for Network Operators. Mine gives me the choice of:
Rogers 2G
Rogers 3G
Bell 3G
and some weird one called 30220 3G.
So make sure you have Rogers 3G selected.
You need to input the apns . I'm On rogers too and it all works after I did this.
Go here
http://www.nexusoneforum.net/forum/rogers-discussion/3987-rogers-wireless-apn-settings-data-mms-here.html
Then go to access point names in your mobile network settings, and add a new apn for data and mms. Copy what he has exactly and presto! Your done.
Just one APN does the trick. I copied what my x10a had before updating to 2.3 x10i
APN
Name: Rogers Internet
APN: rogers-core-appl1.apn
MMSC: http ://mms.gprs.rogers.com
MMS Proxy: 10.128.1.69
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 302
MNC: 720
(everything else is blank)
I thank you for all your reply, i seem to able to get it after i enter the apn as told, thank you so much.
P,S: never mind..after i put it got 3g but it put me on a reboot cycle ...
3g seem to put a lot stress on gingerbread on my x10.
Been using Wolf's for 4 days now on my Rogers X10a on the Rogers network in Toronto with ZERO issues.
Restore the APN: http://pastebin.com/jNse0tpf
wish i can say the same.
But after 2.1 update and a little later my phone started to restarting.
issue: http://talk.sonyericsson.com/message/24287
i already gave up the x10, 2.3.3 make it worse instant boot out as soon i enter "home page"
and worse is, i can't use PC companion now since it say "you have the latest update".
I am done with this piece of crap.

hey I have the same problem as you. Rogers x10a using any 2.3 rom causes a crash/boot loop
You can go to this thread: http://talk.sonyericsson.com/message/59415 and download the ftf file and flash it to your phone with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746 and then update your phone with SEUS
You should be back to Rogers branded firmware and if you're still under warranty you may be able to get an exchange or repair or something.
This thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=801892 Seems to imply that our phones have a motherboard problem due to faulty soldering or misplaced insides.
Good luck to you.
Just repair the phone with PC Companion or reflash with the Flash Tool or xRecovery to see if the issue is still present.
Did you use the pre-rooted ROM? If so, did you follow ALL the instructions (factory reset, wipe cache, etc.) because not doing it may result in the problem you are having.
Also, there's no way to go from 2.3.3 to 2.1 with SEUS. You have to use the FlashTool.

[Q] Unable to connect to this network at this time

Hi guys, I just bought a HTC Hero off of someone, it has the cyanogenmod 7 on it, and was apparently unlocked. Having an iPhone for, I bought an adapter for microsim to sim, and plopped my simcard in the Hero.
Only issue now is.. No service. if I run through settings and go to network operators, Virgin shows up (Virgin Mobile Canada). So if I select this, it tries to register with Virgin, and then I get the error "Unable to connect to this network at this time, please try again later".
Im new to android, so Im a little lost in how I might go about fixing this issue. Ive tryed checking the APN settings, they appear to be right, this is what I have for them:
BELL
Name: Bell
APN: pda2.bell.ca
MMSC: htt p://mms.bell.ca/mms/wapenc
MMS Proxy: web.wireless.bell.ca
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 302
MNC: 610
APN Type: mms
BELL INTERNET
Name: Bell Internet
APN: pda.bell.ca
Proxy: web.wireless.bell.ca
Port: 80
MCC: 302
MNC: 610
APN Type: Default
Im curious if those are set up right, and if they may be the issue. Also, could it be an issue with cyanogenmod, or that the phone was not unlocked correctly? If it is cyanogenmod, how might I go about getting the stock OS on the phone again?
Thanks for the help in advance,
the android noob,
Syntackz.

So you can try to flash another ROM, if you want the stock one you can try VillainROM 13 or the one from elelinux, both of the are tweaked stock versions with Sense UI made by htc...or you can flash a new version of gingerbread...
The problem with the signal can be caused by the sim or by the ROM...try another sim and see how it works, and try to flash another ROM, it's easy to do this
ROMS:
1.Android 2.1 with Sense UI [Elelinux] -> here
2.Android 2.1 with Sense UI [VillainROM] -> here
3.Android 2.3.5 Stock [JiieeHD] - > here
4.Android 2.3.5 [Elelinux] -> here
5.Android 2.2.1 [Erasmux] -> here
Keep me in touch how things go
Stefan
Thanks for the response, Ill try a new rom tonight, im sure its not the sim as it works in the iphone without any issues.
Have to go pick my girlfriend up from work and run some errands and such so I will attempt a new rom tonight.
Chances are I will get stuck trying to install a new rom, this is my first android phone and I bought it with cyanogen already on it, so I have no experience doing that.
Anyways, Ill post back later to let you know how it worked out!
Thanks,
Syntackz.

@waldoelx7241 for that you will need an unlocked bootloader, I can help with that
Just pm me
do u as well have the at&t branded one?
Alejandrissimo unlocked mine and helped me with rooting process. used cwm to do it. still not brave enough to try any other roms or kernels though. wanted root primarily for tethering, setcpu, camera mod, and disable auto brightness.
---------- Post added at 07:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:51 PM ----------
as soon as you boot into cwm make a backup.
Can't recommend Alejandrissimo highly enough, was very fast and helpful.
Can't find any guide for the r800at online
Going to have to get help from the pros on this one!

Do you still have access to 4G Data and Phone calls/voicemail?
I was looking for a rom to flash and can't decide what to do.
yes i do, after i did the initial setup I went under wireless and networks and then mobile networks, then access point names.
I created 2 apns that are the apn's on a stock att play

Awesome! I think I will give it a shot
Do you have a link to a flashing guide? I found the firmware. Anything i should while i attempt this?
Also do i have to root the phone again afterwards?
Sorry for all the questions. Still learning android
i dont have a guide but basically what I did was download this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255095
then i downloaded the SE flash tool for x10 that also works with the play:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
when i unziped the flashtool i went in the folder that says firmwares and deleted all the x10 ones, left the folder empty and placed the r800a ftf i unziped from the r800a download.
i powered off the phone. i opened the flashtool, hit flash, a pop up comes up and displays the r800a firmware it found and you hit ok, this whole time the xperia is unplugged, when the flasher starts and realizes the phone isnt plugged it'll pop up and say press and hold back button and while pressing the button plug in phone, the indicator shoild light up green. the flasher will find the phone and flash it, when its all done itll tell u to unplug phone power it up then place the phone in debugging mode and allow 3rd party apps. the phone will power up saying Sony ericsson then itll do the sony boot instead of the att stock boot. the first time powering on takes a few minutes. viola your phone is now debranded and as far as the phone knows its now an r800a no longer an r800at
and yes after seting up the phone u have to root it again but thats easy
Sweet! Going to try this out this weekend
Are there any other tweaks/changes you recommend?
I would read Aerox912 's post a lil bit down on this page to make some more room in ur internal memory, i went from having 89mb of free internal app for apps to having 204mb, i also use app2sd and move any possible apps to the SD card

So you have 4 APNs on a att phone? I was gonna add those 2 you posted and deleted the original two. Any chance you would post all 4 up for me? Looks to be working with just the 2 posted, but if you got some extras I'm sure they might do something when I travel.
Sent from my R800a using xda premium
ill start off by saying good that the flash worked for you, and i saw that it does add 2 apn's for you. I work for at&t so what i did was i powered on a stock xperia play and read the original apn's on the at&t branded play.
so i went to my play's apn list and hit the menu button and hit "reset to default", after both apn's got erased i added the 2 apn's that i posted above and selected the att one to be the main one, phone has worked perfect with these settings

[Q]Unlock Code; SIM (Bell) Card in Rogers phone no longer connecting after flash.

After flashing a stock Bell ROM to a Rogers branded phone, I can no longer connect to any network. I unlocked the phone previously and had been using it on Bell. No, nothing. Not Rogers, Telus or Bell. It worked fine with the ATT pre-rooted ROM but was buggy as hell, so I decided to do a stock Bell ROM. Plus after going t the stock Rogers rom and a factory reset, I can't get to the unlock code screen, either. What did I do wrong?

Tried my wife's sim card as well. Everything works but the phone modem.
ok, another dumb Q, have you tried changing the modem itself ? Tried Bell's customer support, they're not all that bad.

[Q] CSpire Motorola Milestone X2

So, I have scoured the forums and have not yet found a solution to my current problem.
I was able to originally root my phone using the moto-fastboot method that has been posted on these threads several times to root my phone. Upon rooting I installed some standard applications to remove bloatware and toy with some of the hardware settings. I worked great. I got a little bit too confident and decided to put a custom rom on it without properly backing up(I thought I did).
So I got stuck into bootloop. Upon searching your extremely handy and helpful forums I found a way to install a new sbf and unbrick my phone using RSD lite. The operating system in now working, but it will not make or receive phone calls or data.
Possibly pertinent information:
System version: 45.0.43.MB867.ACG-nTelos.en.US (this is probably way off)
Model: Milestone X2
Android: 2.3.6
Baseband: N_03..13.56P
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9-00011-gbc368b9 [email protected] #2
Build Number: 45.0.43
ERI: Version 5
PRL: Version 21100
My Phone number: 000-000-5761 (obviously not correct)
MIN: 0000005761
MEID: A000002C5D4811
Network: nTelos (I have no idea where that network even is)
Signal Strength: -101dBm 0 asu
Mobile network type: CDMA -1xRTT
Service State: In Service
Mobile Network State: Disconnected
I tried again to root my phone to try to put a custom rom on it, but when I try the moto-fastboot method upon entering the command thru abd shell /preinstall/su I get the error "Permission Denied". I have tried the superoneclick method, Pete's method, z4 root, and droid 3 easy root. I am at quite a loss here on what to do next.
Does anyone know of a way I could maybe use the default android recovery to install the proper rom for my phone and where to get the proper rom?
Alternatively, does anyone know where I can get the proper sbf file for the CSpire Motorolla Milestone X2?
I have been searching for a few days, so please don't get mad if I have overlooked a thread. I was very hesitant about posting this thread because I am not a very active member of your forums and I wanted to make sure I searched a lot before asking the same question over again.
I am not saying the problem I am having is completely unique, but I have not seen anyone with my problem. Since my phone is currently useless as a phone I am willing to try a lot more methods.
Update: I have successfully rooted my phone again using this method:

Given that I now have root access are there any new options to get my phone to work?
How to change you system number
I have some more updates on my current status. I have received a warranty phone. I will not mail it for a few more days, so if anyone can inform me on how to pull some import files from it for their personal use I will . It is rooted now using the method mentioned above. Upon activating the phone with a rep from the company I got some more possibly useful information. I hope this helps others.
I haven't seen this anywhere, but if you need to change you system phone number do the following:
1. dial ##626 press call
2. enter 000000 for the SPC password
3. MIN is the number for your local network
4. IMSI will fill automatically
5. MDN is your personal phone number
6. CDMA system ID I have not information on this
