power button going bad? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

hey guys,
I think the power button on my EVO 4g LTE is going bad...
Initially I thought it was a ROM issue, but after re-flashing, I am lead to believe that the button itself is going bad.
Sometimes it will take more than one press to turn on / off the phone. The button itself feels mushy, and I've tried to blow some compressed air into it with no avail.
I have found a replacement power button and I plan on replacing it myself, not a big deal... Just curious if anyone else has experienced this with their evo before?
thanks

nope never have, Though there are some power button software mods out there in SuperJelly and some others that you can use to keep that button feeling Fresh, Funky, And FLY!
>.> coffee, the things it makes you say.
Also Sweep2Wake will solve this issue in the future as well in a bunch of kernels out there.

there have been a few times where i've had to push the button couple of times to make the phone turn on. i usually thought i wasn't pressing it well enough since i have a tpu case on it.

The screen lag is a known issue with CM10.2, which is why you didn't experience that on stock.

I'm using mean bean again and still the power button doesnt work half the time. Gonna try some stock rims I guess

Phone Rebooting

First off... I LOVE the new phone! It's amazing, and the camera is awesome!
Now, I am having two issues and I was wondering if I was alone. First, I'm having random reboots. I bought the phone about 4 days ago on vacation (still there) so I have not done any mods, no unlocking or rooting. My phone seems to rebooting for no reason, about 7-8 times over 4 days of pretty heavy use. It seems to occur the most on the lock screen or when i push the power button to turn the screen on to see the lock screen. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot that? Anyone else seen this?
The other issue is randomly losing 3g even when it still says I am in 3g. Seems odd, but sometimes the phone will be on 3g, solid 3g and I will be unable to connect to anything that requires data. After a minute (or less) the data comes back with no issues. Any ideas?
Overall I am pretty impressed with the phone. Much better than my old 4g and 3d. Love it!
well if you have a case on it the case will pinch the power button.

I do have a case (the Best Buy version). hmm... wonder if that's the issue. I'll keep an eye out for that next time around. Thanks for the info!

i know my case from sprint pinches the lock key all i did was take it off and align it back and it worked perfect

Very happy EVOLTE owner taking it back to the Sprint Store...

.... Because the down volume sucks.
There is no click on mine. Seems that the button it permanently half pressed down. If for any reason there is ANY pressure in my pocket or anything, it will activate the button and put the volume all the way down.
It's a shame really, since i got the phone working PERFECTLY and running exactly how I want it to.
Anyone else have this issue? If so, what did they say?
I'll be back with my results from Sprint later this evening.
I had the same problem with my EVO 3d. I could never tell if I was actually pressing the button down or not. It seems like HTC has problems designing well functioning buttons.
Thankfully my buttons are ok.... They all have a click.
The overall volume on the device seems to not be add loud as the former EVO 4G.
Yeah that sucks. My buttons are fine. I mean, don't return it. Just have them exchange it at least. U may have luck with the next. Are you within your 14 days?

[Q] Phone randomly shuts down

I just received my new Incredible and am very excited as it is a huge upgrade from my trusty old Eris. I have one very annoying issue though. The phone randomly turns off on its own, and I have to press and hold the power button multiple times for it to restart. Has anyone else experienced this?
Also, does anyone know how to turn off the annoying 'DROID' noise at startup? I tried the Silent Boot app, but it doesn't seem to work on this device.
Thanks!

Not normal. Make sure a program you installed isn't causing the issue first then think about returning it.

Definitely not normal. Perhaps your battery cover is loose?
I used to have to do something really ghetto to my original Incredible while it was near the end of its life. I put a folded business card between the battery and cover so it wouldn't jar itself loose and shut off the phone.
However, does not seem normal at all for a new phone.
The same thing happened to mine a few times. I think the power button is very sensitive. Just a small amount of pressure is needed to close the circuit and if its held that way for over 1 second then phone thinks your trying to initiate a shut-down so it does so.
Just thinking out loud here, not totally sure....

That should pop up the shut down menu though and it sounds as if the OP isn't seeing that. Unless I missed something.
Yea, your absolutely right, I forgot about that.... Hmmm.
anyone else notice how long it takes to turn the phone one??
I have to hold the power button for what seems like doubt the time for my old rez,inc1,inc1,eris, ect.
kinda annoying lol, feels like its not working or something.
not really a complaint, but just a comment.
also if my phone were rebooting I'd go to store before that 14 day and get a NEW phone before Verizon trys to pull that crap and give you a refurb!

Yes I've noticed it takes a little longer comparing from my Thunderbolt. I can hold pwr button down, count to ten and it starts booting up. But with the Dinc4G, it does take a little longer holding down but it may be a quicker boot up time overall. This from just the two times or so how it seems to me ...I just got it so still acclimating and had already thoughts that the extended battery may be nice to just give me a little more to hang on to .

What apps do you have? I have looked at my phone realized it was not on. I was like wtf. This has happened twice in the past two days. Maybe we can see what apps we have in common?

I received a warranty replacement that did that (randomly turning off). Was irreconcilable after talking with tech support.
My recommendation is to perform factory reset if you can, remove sd card, and see if it works properly.
If not you most likely have a hardware defect of some kind. Return or replace.

I did a factory reset and it still does it randomly. And it only does it when its in my pocket. I thought it was my case (i have the otter box commuter) so I cut it around the power button. Still it happened to me today. About getting a replacement, since it happens randomly far inbetween, there is no way for me to prove there is a problem.

No boot-up sound at all if phone is set to vibrate prior to shutdown/restart.

i717 down! need a medic! to late...

well after almost a year of abusive flashing testing flashing testing and so forth my i717 has decided it no longer wants to boot, be plugged in or generally do anything other then vibrate lol
this was not a rom problem as i wasnt flashing anything *just making that clear* it was simply my phone giving up.
battery in = vibrate bootloop
battery out + plugged in usb/wall = vibrate bootloop
button combos = vibrate bootloop
straight power button = samsung logo.... vibrate bootloop
if im lucky enough to get into download mode a few seconds pass and screen blanks then you guessed it = vibrate bootloop
so until i can get another i717 *yeah i like the phone and they arent overly pricey used* ill have to halt production as i always test my roms before releasing to anyone so that my phone will get the damage instead of other people
with all that said if anyone has a cheap i717 laying around shoot me a pm

I'm in the same boat with mine right now. It went out over the weekend. I've had this issue before though and traced it back to a faulty power button causing it to stick and bootloop.
Tearing the phone down and messing with the microbutton on the main board has gotten me to boot back up but its only a matter of time until its going to fully go out. There's been a few posts I've found regarding this issue in our forum as well as the S2 forum.
Try and see if messing with the button helps, its worked for me the past 3 times this has happened to me.

I avoid using the power button now. It sucks that this device is made cheaply.

Just spent a good 20-40 mins on mine today getting it to turn on. The new battery I ordered came in so I decided to tinker with it some. Took it apart, took the logic board out, and looked at everything to see if anything fried. (Phone was baking in a tent over the weekend in the desert so the battery swelled and took a dump)
Played with the power button and put it back together a few times and finally got it to power back on. Just be persistent with it and it might revive itself.
I've had somewhat similar symptoms too. Happened to happen after flashing a ROM, so I thought it was a bad flash.
It's a battery failure. I can almost guarantee it. :cyclops: I have the luxury of another person in my household who has an i717 and swapping the battery got my phone up and running again.
My old battery would read full charge (when off and plugged in), and the phone managed to boot once in a while, it would reboot and go into a boot loop as soon as I unplugged the cable.

[Q] SGH-i777 Power button not responding at ALL

Hello
I just registered for this site. I watched the video explaining to me that I'm a noob, and appreciated it. It put me in my place.
I have a Samsung Galaxy s II (for at&t; SGH-i777)
It is about a year and a half old.
I have not rooted it, everything on it is as if it were out of the box. Nothing is changed from the default settings.
I have upgraded to 4.0.4 though.
About a couple days ago, the power button stopped responding completely. I took out the battery and reinserted it which caused the phone to restart but did nothing for my problem. I have called Samsung (they told me to send it in for repairs: costing $70) I would love to get it repaired without sending it in or parying that amount. I have seen options of getting it rooted, downloading an app to transfer the powere button function over to the Volume down button function, but I don't really know how to go about that.
Therefore, I ask you, O'people of XDAdevelopers, do I have any other options? I did search the site for a problem similar to mine, but everyone else has their phone rooted. I am also unfamiliar to any technical terms. I am a noob to the fullest. I don't know how to root the device or even what things would be neccessary to root it.
Any help would be much appreciated it. I am willing to do anything.

As far as rooting and finding software workarounds, you can easily find all of that info by searching and looking at the stickies.
From a hardware perspective, I would recommend taking apart the back shell of the phone, and try to see if the power button responds by pressing it without its plastic cover piece.
If you have any soldering ability you can replace the part yourself for under 10 dollars. Search eBay for it

Hey man thanks for the help. I didn't get a chance to try out your method. A couple days ago, I woke up and the problem was completely gone. The power button was fully-functional and my phone was working perfectly.
Unfortunately, today, my phone has started acting up again. It keeps restarting on its own. It shuts down while I'm using it and it restarts. Nothing seems different so I start using the phone again, and it happens again (it restarts). Its restarted today around 7 times. My power button is functional at the moment, but I remember this exact sequence of events leading up to my initial problem where the phone's power button stopped responding.
What do you recommend?

I have no such ability. I could follow instructions but I myself am not good with that type of stuff. Fortunately though, this wasn't necessary. The power button started working on its own again without me having to do anything. Everything was fine until today, my phone has started acting up again. It keeps restarting on its own. Wait.. so even though the phone is working fine today, there's still the possibility that its going to completely fail? It stopped restarting on its own once I took the cover off. I had the Otterbox cover for SGH-i777 on it, but once I removed the cover, the phone has been working fine. Do you think there's a connection between the cover and the restarts? (I would post the link for the otterbox cover to show you, but I can't post links since I'm still a newcomer)

Once again, thanks for the help. So you think I'm fine now? No need to change the button or get the phone repaired? I should be fine now?

Possibly. I was experiencing reboots months ago with a trident case. I'm now using no case and haven't had any issues.

Fortunately though, this wasn't necessary. The power button started working on its own again without me having to do anything. Everything was fine until today, my phone has started acting up again. It keeps restarting on its own.

First off, have you checked to see if there’s another update? There were two 4.0.4 updates released for this phone. There was one back in January, I believe, that introduced the sleep of death problem, as well as causing a lot or seemingly random reboots. Some of the problems you describe definitely sound like these. They released another update around March that was supposed to fix these problems. That update is also 4.0.4, but should be UCLL6.
The power button issue is also a well known problem. When mine starts acting up, the first thing that happens is I’ll press the power button and the power menu will come up as if I’m holding the button down. Then a few seconds later, the phone will reboot and usually the power button doesn’t work after. It’s likely a design defect and will fail eventually, but there is a solution, if only temporary, that has worked for me and several others. If it starts happening again, pull your battery and press the power button repeatedly. Some people have gone so far as to press it several hundred times. I usually only press it a couple dozen times, but the problem does comes back for me eventually and I have to do it again. Interestingly, most of the people I've seen reporting this power button problem have had it start in the last couple months, around the year and a half mark. Not trying to say anything, but very awkward it started happening right as the Galaxy S4 was announced
I had this problem and tried all the workarounds but they didn't seem to work or was buggy. I ended up having to send it in to Samsung for them to fix it (luckily it was still under warranty). It ended up being a hardware issue so you may need to send it in to repair if you cannot fix it yourself with the methods in this post.
Those with power button issues, try this app:

Works great, and the Dev has a thread for it on XDA.

About a couple days ago, the power button stopped responding completely.

I had almost the exact same problem with my Sprint Galaxy S II (Epic Touch). (Random reboots every couple of days, which got progrssively worse. Eventually, I noticed that just brushing the power button would cause the phone to reboot ~10sec later.) It ended up being a bad power button, and replacing it resolved the issue.
How handy are you with a soldering iron? If you're pretty good, you can buy the AT&T i777 S2 switch for about ten bucks and replace it yourself. (You can also try cleaning it for free - several tutorials here at XDA. The Samsung "Captivate" and "Epic 4G Touch" have similar switches and and the same problems. Search both forums.)
Several eBay sellers have the switch you'll need. (They don't provide the skills needed to solder it in place - but your AT&T phone will be easier than the I897 Captivate or D710 Epic Touch. Your switch is similar, but a larger size.)
UPDATE: Several eBay sellers now offer mail-in repair services! (If you don't have mad soldering skills, you can still get your phone fixed:

I've having that problem on mine it's still on Gingerbread. The power button seems to be clicking normally, it doesn't seem stuck. Yet anytime I stick my battery in it automatically cuts on and the screen seems to shut off without responding to the power button. I cannot reboot the device. I cannot turn the screen off/on without plugging it in or unplugging it from charger.

You could remove the power button entirely and rely on the Gravity Screen On/Off app I linked above. I have never tested it on GB but it should work, as It relies on the sensor. Removing the power button shouldn't be difficult at all, as you can access it by removing the battery and there are several tutorials on how to do that (i9100 tutorials will work just as good).
Perhaps some of these ideas will work for you?
My current phone has a failed power button. I didn't bother removing the power button, as it is unnecessary. I use Gravity Screen, and an app called Power Menu to replace the power button long press menu. I just pull the battery to turn the phone off, and for rebooting. Works acceptably well.
Of course the other option is to have the power button replaced, which is about $40 plus shipping, but this phone is so old it is hardly worth it.
