[Q] DNA won't charge/turn on - HTC Droid DNA

Hey guys,
I'm new to the DNA forum and I've searched through a few threads about this but I haven't been able to find much help. Here we go: so as the title states the phone won't turn on and when I put it on the charger no LED's turn on to resemble a charge at all. I've tried the power button for 20 seconds, nothing happens, I've tried the power button, volume down, and even power, volume up and down. None of these seem to give life to the phone.
This is actually my friend's old phone and he got a replacement for it already I'm just trying to see if I can get it working again. So really I have a free DNA to diagnose because Verizon doesn't want it back.
Phone wasn't rooted before it died, pure stock.
Anybody have a suggestion or path you think I should take?
Thanks ahead of time,
monkey

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you need to ask your friend for the complete story. What happened prior to the phone being bricked? Was there water damage or any other damage. Have you tried other charging cables that are known to be working and looked to make sure the pins inside the charge port have not been broken?

Sounds bricked to me. If it is bricked only way to get it working is to jtag it and send it out. It will be cheaper than paying for a new dna and if you really want it, it would run you a lot less in terms of money for a jtag repair.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app

Try letting it charge a full 24hrs and then see if it powers on. If that doesn't work then consider jtag
Sent from my 5 Senses of DNA

Not sure if I'll go the JTAG route or not. Like I said the phone has been replaced already it just sucks I can't take advantage of the phone. I have it sitting on the charger now, going to see if it'll work after a long period of time. There's no water damage, Verizon has checked it already.
If I would JTAG it...what would come of that. I'm not 100% familiar with JTAG, I just did a small amount of googling about it. Looks like a diagnostic procedure?

Its like a low level format that will restore to factory configuration.

It will get the phone working for a smaller coast than purchasing a new one. So you would still be taking advantage of getting a new phone. If you purchase the phone through Verizon with an upgrade you will be spending around 250$ where as opposed to getting it jtaged I believe you will only be paying 65$ (not sure about price) if you go through mobile tech.

The upgrade cost is only $99 nowadays. I just got mine Monday from Fry's Electronics for $99.99. If they didn't have it, I was going to order it from wireless [dot] amazon [dot] com for $99.99.

Interesting...I may have to go that route, I'm considering taking it apart and getting a voltage reading off the charging port. That'll at least tell me if the port is working correctly. If I go down that path I'll keep you all updated.

They must have dropped price since I got it. It was the same on Amazon and verizon when I get my dna
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app

I took the back off only to find out I don't have screwdrivers small enough to take it all apart. Also couldn't get a correct reading from anywhere. Back to the drawing board for now...

Did you try a wireless charging pad? That might work who knows

Greetings, I purchased a Droid DNA on craigslist and thought I had a great deal, the phone turned on, then turned off and never would take a charge again. After contacting verizon and having them tell me to return the device to the"retailer" I purchased the device from, I contacted HTC directly. HTC provided me with an amazing customer service expirence, it was weird and erie how good the service was. They gave me a ticket number number and an address to ship the device to, they didnt care where I purchased it. They day it arrived they fixed it and sent it back with a new motherboard less than 24 hours after delivery conformation. The device works perfectly.
I guess what I am getting at is if you can put the phone back together and make it look like you didnt take it apart, call HTC and create a repair order. All these devices come with at least a 1 year warranty.
I hope you get your device working regardless.

Yeah HTC support is by far the best support I have ever experienced. I felt the same way. My charger was bugging out and I called they got all my info and just said they would send a new one for free and to throw the other one out. They called me today and I missed the call but they didn't leave any message. Wondering if I should call them back or not, but oh well.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app

Little late on my update but I did get the phone apart and back together. I didn't see anything that stuck out, no water damage, etc.
I would contact HTC and try to get a replacement, however Verizon realized they never got the device back and well...they want it. So there goes my fun...
Thanks for all the input

same problem
I had the exact same issue (no charging no screen but capacitive touch buttons flashed) and had been playing with it trying to get my month old gold brick at this point, to rise like the Phoenix when it caught the light at just the right angle and the screen looked weird. Took a flashlight to it and the LCD is damaged but there is NO damage to the case/frame/digitizer. Been dealing with HTC for a week an probably will have to repair it myself. But heads up to anyone else with the same issue check the screen...

I am having the same problem. Any home based solutions so that i dont need to take it to either Verizon store or post it to JTAG?
Thank You

Although it may not appear to be charging let it sit for the night as it may be. Then take it off in the morning and hold the power button for 30 seconds and see if it boots. Some dna phones have issues when they die. My battery has died 4 times on me and when I plug it in the led light blinks for 2 mins and then it stays lit and charges so, just let it sit over night and try in the morning.
Report back when you have done the following.

Thanks for the quick reply. I did that whole night. The green light dint even blink for a single second. And pressing the power button does nothing. I tried plugging it into computer, computer dint even detect it. (on mac, windows 7 and linux). I tried to boot it into the bootloader mode, still no progress.
Thank You

If its less than a year old, not rooted, and no evidence of physical damage or water damage, then they have to fix it under warranty.

Yeah I just got mine fixed for it stop charging. I was happy they didn't even say anything about it being rooted might have just gotten very lucky. They also didn't delete data thank God. Hope they do same fur you.
Do you know if she may have mistakenly put the wrong side of the charger in? That's what I did for a second and it wouldn't charge anymore couldn't even connect to computer.

Im not sure if thats whay she did or not. Of course if she did she wont admit it but nothin looks damaged. As of right now its still at 80% but i have a feeling once this thing dies we wont be abke to power it back up. It was xmas gift from her grandmother and of course her grandmother cant find the reciept and paid cash for it. I called geek squad and they said theres nothin they can do because theres no reciept and we dont have bestbuys insurance. They told me to call htc and see what they can do. Also is there maybe a power mat for tablets like there is for phones?

Power Mat requires access to the charge port, or to replace the battery door. So that's not going to help you in this case. Calling HTC is your best bet.
Had a problem like this. The Tab inside the charging port was pushed in too far. I took the case off, and pushed the tab back out then reset the two positioning tabs to hold the connection tab in the correct position. If those two positioning tabs are not depressed deep enough the connection tab can be pushed in out of place and no connection is made.
Im not mechanically incline enough to do that lol.....i called htc and told em the story there sent me out a package with a return shipping package. Apparently this is a common issue. They said as long as theres no physical damage or water damage it shouldnt be an issue. The case has been in an otterbox since day one

Note not charging?

Anyone have any tips for a Note not charging? Tried a few cables. It is rooted and has a custom ROM, so I feel like I am stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Anyone have any experience with this that maybe could point me in the direction of how to get my phone back to working normally?
Flash back to stock?
Does it still connect to your computer? If it's not charging & not connecting, your charging port is probably broken. You could probably manage with an external battery charger & a couple of batteries you can charge & rotate, like these-
Try blowing the port out with compressed air? Otherwise, yeah, you're looking at a replacement phone.

Same thing happened to a 'friend'. That part is very easy to change out. I don't know if you can buy it by itself though. What I 'heard' you can do is buy a new note from BB switch the charging ports and return it. Just make sure the battery is charged when u return it.

I flashed a stock rooted rom and they were cool with that. But it would depend on the person. Does the port work if you hold it in a certain position?

Yeah. I tried around 3 or 4 chargers (car, oem, etc.), and none worked. I got home last night... Plugged it into my computer with a cable I had left at my computer, and it was charged in the morning.
Maybe I can give it some more time to make sure it wasn't something just disrupting the pin connections.

The exact same thing happened to me. My Note stopped charging completely. As previously stated, you can get an external battery charger but your best bet might be a replacement phone.
From what I was told by a local phone repair shop, its not an easy fix. I'm not sure how correct that is.
However, AT&T replaced mine and it was quite an easy process.

My phone just stopped charging. Luckily, it has 50% charge left, and I have a backup iPhone. Has anyone else experienced this problem and had their phone successfully replaced?
If so, did you go through AT&T or Samsung? If I go into an AT&T store, will they be able to give me a replacement right there? If not, will they at least be able to start the repair process?

Your charging port could be broken, you can always buy a wall charger for cheap on amazon to charge your battery..and might as well pick up another battery while your at it. Very convenient.

That's a good short term fix, but it's inconvenient and by the time you get that wall charger you'll have a new phone via warranty exchange.
I have a OEM charging cradle and battery I got on shopandroid for cheap. It was well worth it.

I have the same problem with my 3 month old note (At&t i717). No pressure pull or anything was done to the phones USB port in fact it happened in the middle of the night while charging, it just stopped charging on its own. It's stock rom never rooted 2.3.6. Picked up the phone this morning was about 50% i didnt pay too much attention, got in the car and plugged in and noticed it is not charging. I thought its my trusty Chinese charger but it was not, came back home tried home charger the laptop plus USB cable and non worked. I am using original home charger and samsung USB cable. Cleaning the port did nothing. Rebooting few times and pulling the battery out did not help either.
And then the strangest thing happened. While it was plugged in (without me even touching it) after 20 minutes of being plugged in suddenly it made its DING sound and started charging. It has been charging everywhere since then, that was a few hours ago. I am worried it may do this again. It is definitely a software issue to me. I didn't touch the phone and started recharging all on its own!
I bought this note off Craigslist and its only about 3 months old and still under warranty but I don't have the receipt so Samsung says f/u. Very pissed at Samsungs poor customer service, really rude people in the Philippines at customer service, when I told them I bought the phone on Craigslist used, they acted like I have stolen their family jewels and did not want to talk to me. They came up with lame BS excuses like warranty doesn't transfer to second owner (it does, it's mandatory in the USA magnuson moss act ). HTC in contrast has always services my used phones without receipt using the IMEI they check and know it's still under warranty. They place a temporary charge on the card but they have never charged me anything and have promptly repaired my phones multiple times over the past couple of years.
I've replaced my phone twice under a try warranty. It was super easy and the second time they sent me a brand new device. Also have your charger replaced as well, it a warranty issue also.

[Q] Hardware problems - Screen malfunction

Hey guys,
Terrible tragedy here, had this phone for just a couple months and the audio jack started going wonky. Audio would cut out of one channel unless I spun the wire exactly the right way. Got tired of this, so I ordered a new jack for a few bucks and waited for it to come from China. When it finally did, I pulled my phone apart carefully following this guide:
dozuki-guide-pdfs.s3.amazonaws.com/durapowerglobal/guide_4_en.pdf
Not my first rodeo here, so it was pretty simple to take to apart, snap in the new jack, and put it all back together. Turned it on, and sound works, volume rocker, haptic buttons light up, vibrates, indicator light, all that good stuff. But the screen won't come on! Step 3 of that guide (the image is a little hard to see) has a black outline around the screen flex cable. Reseated that thing some 50 times already crossing fingers and praying to gods I don't believe in. Still nothing. I swear I was more careful with this repair than I've ever been with anything in the past, didn't crack anything, twist, bend, break anything, didn't go crossing wires or doing it while the phone was on. I can't see any reason why the screen won't turn on :crying: And the pricetag on a new screen is just about what the phone is! That, and of course there's no guarantee that a new screen would solve the problem if the issue happened to be on the board side of the connector.
Any advice? I'm grabbing at straws here and really don't want to have to drop money on another one just a few months after I bought it. Help greatly appreciated!
I am not sure what you can do, but since you had a legit issue with the phone that you didn't cause by doing something you shouldn't have, why didn't you get it exchanged under warranty?

Interesting... that thought never even crossed my mind. I guess my presumption was that a problem like that could be deemed damage to the phone if they insisted I had a wire plugged in and bent it or something to that effect. I guess I'm just so used to warranties not ever fixing anything that I forgot they existed. My natural reaction has become: something's broken? I'll have to fix it.
Though, I guess I could put it back together and bring it to a Verizon store and say the screen turned off and won't turn back on. Playing dumb may be a viable option.

My mistake, I didn't mean to cite fraud on this board. I'm simply frustrated with something that doesn't make sense to me and looking for a viable option that doesn't involve a $700 price tag. If I dropped it or got it wet I'd pay the bill, no problem. That I can clearly say is my fault and I messed up. I'm just astounded as someone who builds and repairs laptops, has fixed countless cell phones, ipods, etc. that simply unplugging a wire and plugging it back in would make the screen completely stop working with no signs of life. I just can't make sense of WHY it happened. If I could, I could blame myself and accept the bill for it and call it a lesson learned. But I haven't learned anything, other than that 99% of the time when I carefully replace parts everything will work fine, and 1% of the time - the time when the replacement bill is over 200% the original bill - something will strangely go wrong without any reasonable explanation.

Samsung doesn't charge an insane amount to fix the screen. Not anywhere close to 700.
The end of the day, the screen worked fine, you took the phone apart, screen now doesn't work, your fault. You did something. Everyone makes mistakes. You have a lesson to learn here, you just don't like it. Your lesson should be to have it replaced with a refurbed unit through Verizon not fix it yourself while under warranty unless they deem your issue not covered by warranty.
Warranties are interesting things. They sometimes cover things they shouldn't and don't cover things they should. Laptop warranties cover the AC port. I've sent laptops off for customers in the past where they obviously broke the AC port by putting extreme force against the AC cord. MFG still covered it. Not every company is out to get you.
I've only had to do it once with my Rezound. Got the refurb in a few days and sent my original one back. Was simple. I also didn't pay a dime.

[Edit] Gahhh it says sent from my Thunderbolt, how disappointing. I love this phone, but seriously - downgrading screen size makes the soul cry. After the note we're really getting into tablet territory with our next phones. Maybe Ill start a clothing company and just make giant pockets in everything. I foresee a market in previous note owners in 2 years.

You're 100% right, I hadn't yet gotten out of the denial stage of grief. Funny enough, I used to work at a Staples EasyTech and would work on and send out customer's computers and see the same sorts of things.
Anyway, thanks.

I know how you must feel. It really does suck. Just trying to help make this a learning experience for you and others who read it.
But seriously Samsung doesn't charge a huge amount to replace the screen. Give them a call and check. They may not even have to do that much. Who knows until they look.

Screen went multicolor and won't change

My phone appears to be shot. Is this a hardware issue? When plugged into the computer, it recognizes the phone, but I can't access any files.
Here is a picture of what the screen looks like. Is this phone shot, or fixable?

Just happened to mine.. Sprint just gave me a new one.. If you hold the power button down and reset it a few times it might come back. But it will not stay.
Bad touch screen .

Out of curiosity, did the two phones that did this have the recent OTA update installed?
Nope, I have not done an OTA update in months. It's been working temperamentally all night. I was able to recover and flash a new ROM, and still, same problem. Guessing it's a hardware problem, not a software problem.

Anyway to get at that cable in this phone?
That exact thing happened to my device about 3 weeks ago. Sprint replaced the screen for $50. When I powered it up the screen was unresponsive. Turned out that I had an older twrp with a new touch panel. Even though the screen was all full of snow the touch panel was working and I ended up
wiping my system. What an ordeal! My device is working perfect now, it's definitely your screen. Good luck!

If you know how to take the phone apart.. but it would be best to take to sprint.. you will need to try to get the screen back on to run a ruu to unroot the phone..

Not hard to take the phone apart but, for $50 bucks they said if it wasn't the screen they would give me a new device. They won't know it's rooted till they fire it up. The guy that helped me didn't care that it was rooted, it's hardware failure. His EVO was rooted lol

Nearest sprint store is 200 miles away from my school... I called and they said to call HTC, it will be covered by them, not by Sprint.
Pressing in the lower left of the screen usually gets it to come back on though.

I had this issue. Give it time and it should go back . I was at the Sprint store and then the screen came back. Is your phone hot?

Id say it is your touch screen drivers. I have had the same issue when they first dropped. I doubt your LCD would be doing that. If it does fix the issue, then you got a different model touchscreen/lcd.
EDIT: Just read your post about it returning to normal by pressing on the screen. So it does sound like there are some issues, and probably need to get the screen replaced. See what options you have with sprint as it is probably out of warranty with htc anyways. Most shops would charge 100-150 to replace it probably.
I believe it is standard policy for Sprint to charge $50 to fix or replace the device if it can't be fixed. It's not a bad deal, my gf's device had a dead spot and they replaced the screen for $50. You will pay about that for a screen on the internet if you replace it your self. Your only problem is the distance to travel and in my case they had to order the screen so I activated my OG till the part came in. The $50 will guarantee you will get a working device.

HTC will replace it for free, I bought the phone from Sprint in March, so it's still in the 1 year warranty even though it was actually manufactured in August.
The strange thing I'm noticing now, is that sometimes the screen goes static, but when I press in that corner, the screen comes back, but it is frozen. The phone seems to freeze a lot now as well.

Annoying thing is it takes a minimum of 2 weeks, and I am waiting on a few important calls in the next few weeks. I'm going to buy a used phone on ebay, and then sell it when I'm done.

When it's frozen, if I turn the screen off then back on, the static is back. Which almost seems software related. Strange problem.
Update. HTC says the phone is out of warranty and quoted me $290 for repair. I'm guessing this is because I left it S-off? Even though it is clearly a hardware issue...
My next question, is it worth buying a screen online and replacing that, or does the fault go deeper? I can handle the screen replacement, but if there is more wrong, then that is $50 wasted.

Solved: Dead phone. Strange bootloop

Edit: Fixed! Well, temporarily. I've ordered a new power button to replace the sticking one. Until then, I've managed to unstick it for now.
While I'm fairly sure it's dead dead, I figured I'd ask here before giving up.
Background: Best Buy refurbished AT&T i717 with Beanstalk 4.4 flashed. It worked amazingly after switching from 4.2 to 4.4, but one day it froze and restarted into a bootloop. If left alone, it shows the Samsung logo and then goes to a black screen. If plugged in, it vibrates several times, shows the charge indicator momentarily, and then starts vibrating again. It will boot into download mode, but restarts itself after 3 seconds. It will not boot into recovery no matter how I try.
So first question: Is there anything I can do to revive it? I'm making due with a worn out Captivate Glide right now, but I'd like my Note back.
Second question if not: Are there any cool projects I can reuse the parts of my Note on?
If you can get into download mode I'd try hooking it up to a windows machine with Kies installed. Do an emergency recovery and bring it back to stock. If that doesn't work, idk. You will probably need your serial number though.

The device auto reboots after 3 seconds when I get it into download mode. Otherwise, I would have already tried that. Unfortunately, I don't have the device's original serial number either, as the refurbisher didn't think that was important to note on their sticker.

That sticker no longer exists. It was removed and replaced by the refurbisher. Also, normal boot does not cycle. It just hangs. I have to remove the battery and replace it to get the device to show the Samsung logo again. I've also removed the bezel/back that covers the mainboard of the device to check the power button. It doesn't seem to stick.
Can I get a stuck power button? Stuck power button anybody?
Even though it may sound or even feel ok, you could have a stuck power button. Flick the back of your phone a few times and see if it helps. Then go to Best Buy and say "WHAT THE [email protected]#K"

Well, my 2 year replacement plan ran out a month ago. This was my second refurb for various hardware failures (first the audio port, and then the USB) I had to switch out the USB board on this one just a few weeks ago actually, thanks to the design flaw of it being on the bottom, but it ran just fine afterward until now. Is there a way to bypass the power button, short of removing it, that I can use to test?

I'm pretty easy on my phones, physically. When I did a trade in on my HTC Inspire to buy the Note, the BB employee was in complete shock that I'd carried it daily for nearly 1 1/2 years.
I'm actually looking forward to the Note 4 this fall. Lots of good buzz coming from side channels. Although, I've started considering settling for the S5 or Note 3 now that my Note is dead.
Looking at the contacts, the power and volume buttons are thru hole soldered about 6mm apart... $3 on ebay for a replacement button. I might try my luck with my soldering iron. If that doesn't work, I'll start looking for ways to put this big screen to use in some DIY projects.
Ok, thanks everyone for the suggestions! I took the board off and attempted to unsolder the contacts. No go, need to buy a high temp soldering iron. BUT, I mashed the button really hard with a screw driver and it seems to have (temporarily) fixed the button. I've ordered a new button and it should be here soon. Hoping this temp fix keeps until.

You are braver than I. Many just take some alcohol and a qtip to clean connection, but obviously you are a bit on the mad scientist side. I can only imagine your phone looks a little frankenstein ish.
