Today, I was caught out for the second time by the unintended SMS recipient bug, where you go to send a text to someone and the phone selects a totally random contact. Normally I'll spot it before I send but it's an accident waiting to happen. This time, I sent a romantic text to my friend instead of the wife, last time I sent a text to the ex instead of my wife! No damage done thankfully but it's totally unacceptable and I've had my phone since Oct 2009. At this rate I'll need a new phone before HTC fix this bloody issue.
When Google finally acknowledged the issue recently I raised (a third) support call with HTC who said they'd fix it when Google issued a fix. Recently Google have started rolling out a fix to 2.3 Nexus S users. Anyone have any intelligence when (if?) this is going to come to 2.1???
never heard of this problem
As above. I havnt heard of this bug effecting 2.1....
Ive heard it effects 2.2+
Hate to break it to you, but the hero is basically dead to HTC now. It has been superseded by so many phones now, HTC are never going to provide any further updates to it. The best you can hope for is a dev will integrate the fix into cyanogenmod 7, if they haven't already.
I can assure you it does affect 2.1 and I've seen various other people say so in other threads. The mate I sent the wrong message to has a Magic and he says it affects him too - not sure what version of Android he's running.
I hadn't seen Google refer to the issue as specific to any particular revision but, if people have been reporting it since June and a fix has been rolled out to 2.3, it would seem to suggest a fairly generic issue.
Like many people I'm pretty disappointed with HTC but I may still stick with them for my next phone as I have an aversion to Samsung and Motorola.
What carrier/country are you in? i also own a magic and still have never had this problem?
I'm on Orange in the UK, dunno what network my mate is on.
To be precise (because there are two bugs really) this is the one where you go to a contact details, select "Send message" and it takes you to the conversation thread for another contact. It would appear to occur randomly however it usually seems to affect texts I send to my wife. This could be because I text her more than anyone else. However once it has done this once it will affect that contact (and not others) until I reboot the phone. I reckon it's some kind of stack issue.
I've had this happen once or twice. Wasn't a huge deal but yeah I've noticed it on 2.1 haven't on 2.2 though

Upgrade!
My hero received an OTA update today taking it to software level 3.36.405.1.
The only posts I've seen relating to this update indicate that it fixes issues to do with the Peep app. MF that, what about basic stuff like making it send messages to the right people?! Anyone know anything more about this upgrade?
Edit:
I noticed that the upgrade added a bunch of bookmarks to my browser, which I was thankfully able to delete. For all of yesterday I even thought that ordering my bookmarks alphabetically would finally persist but no, today they're back in the order added! I mean, if you're going to bother with an OTA update why wouldn't you fix something like this? At over 6MB I'm guessing there have been some other changes with this update, time will tell if the text bug has been addressed but I'm thinking this is just a HTC update rather than anything to do with Android?
as the title says, somehow i have activated the scrolling news info on the lockscreen and want to turn it off.
how do i do it?
Hi there Hpsauce this is very simple
Settings > Security > Lock screen options > turn off information ticker > done
if you get any problems let me know.
thanks mate for the answer and quick response.

hope i dont get in trouble for listing stuff here lol...but i really appreciate your help.
I have a gs3 that was supplied by orange uk. I dont know if it has orange specific software on it (the box and phone seem unbranded) but im having several issues with it.
I have been trying to ask the question if i have the latest firmware or if there is one i can update to in a bid to solve the issues i have.
It seems i dont have the option on the phone (under the about phone section) to manually check and kies says no update available however i would be happy to flash with odin if i knew there was something latter that i could use as im getting to the point where ive nearly had enough of the phone.
if there are options to sort it out then willing to try as there are things that i really like about it.
will post a screen shoot with the fimrware info etc and anything you know about it (dont worry if you dont) would be great.

regarding the branding when you boot your S3 is there an orange boot screen?
Ok so I looked over your screenshot and there are difference in are settings as you can see here, looks like are kernel versions are different.
And what are these problems you've been having, as that may be just down to the device.
sorry for answering your questions with more but it will help me answer your questions

And if you could send a screen shot with your kernel number and stuff that would be great, I received a firmware update today but im un-branded so that may have something to do with it as branded devices are normally behind.

again thanks for the quick reply
does the screen shot i posted prior to your post not give that information or do i need to look elsware for it?
No my phone does not have any orange splashscreen or any branding on the phone itself (however it was supplied direct by orange). It came in a normall samsung box with no orange stuff all over it however it was sealed with orange sticker on it.
problems so far are:-
1) very laggy in and out of app to homescreen.
2) lots of 'sorry not responding' in various apps (video player, messaging etc)
3) inconsistant battery drain....yesterday i got through the whole day with 50% spare (unplugged at 6.30, charged at 10.45pm) today i was down to 25% by 2.00pm (unplugged at 6.30) nothing different done in usage.
there have been other things but these spring to mind at the moment.
Have to be honest and say its really ruining the exsperience at the moment. My htc one s is so smooth and quick. I had the gs3 on preorder and really looked forward to it (knowing how good sgs2 was) had high hopes for this phone. I really think lots of these problems are possibly down to being quad core as i owned the htc one x for a week and had similar issues.
I'm to sure about your handset it may be unbranded then, you will have to ring Ornage and find out though.
And yeah I updated my post as you posted your as I wasn't expecting you to post a screenshot so quick.
and as far as the issues go, I haven't heard of any of them in the S3 yet other than the UI redraw issue. The battery will need to be recalibrated by the sounds of it this is easy enough to do if you would like to do that?

thanks again for your help
a guy on another thread has said that i have orange branded firmware on it and thats why i dont have the option to manually check for update. He has said i need to flash to the latest uk generic branded firmware.
I am going to give this a try (downloading at the moment) just hope i dont have problems with the radios etc.
thanks for the help with the battery issue however i am assuming that this will all be reset when i flash?
Yeah then you can re-calibrate it and it should all be good.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help mate,
good luck
thanks mate.
Ok, so me and another guy did some tests with the onex+ touch screen and found out why so many of us have issues with scrolling, we need as many people as possible to report the issue to HTC so we can get a hotfix, i dont think HTC realize at the moment, this is what to do, type in on th phone keypad *#*#3424#*#*. choose more, then choose the screen drawing option, dont draw, just touch it with your finger and see if there is a white dot, if there isnt then touch another part of the screen and then see if the previous touch shows up, if so you have the same software issue as many of us, its quite possible that its a major hardware flaw and cant be rectified in which case HTC will have to do mass repairs or recall, we are not going to stand for this at a price of £500, if you have this issue please report on HTC website, either email or chat or phone call, it needs to be done or we will have scrolling issues time and time again on each update.
What touch screen issue are you talking about? I've not heard anything about it from anyone on here. I think mine is fine. Or maybe I haven't noticed it yet.

Me and another guy discovered it, trying to sort out our scrolling problems, as of now theres an issue. 4 people have the exact same issue so far and i bet theres more.Test your screen and you will no for sure. Its causing random clicks and rubberbanding when scrolling, its not all the time and probably wouldnt notice it unless your a heavy user(always on your phone)
you have the same software issue as many of us, its quite possible that its a major hardware flaw

Yup, I noticed it too. It's gone now, since I switched over to CM10. It makes no sense! (See what I did there? )
I think I'm that other guy OP was talking about. I have this scrolling issue where stuff on screen are being selected or clicked on accidentally instead of scrolling though them - but never had this problem before I updated to the most recent firmware, so I'm pretty sure this is a software thing.
Best we could do right now is report to HTC.

Oh, so switching to a custom rom solves it. Must learn about those stuff then.
Had very similar problem on the sensation. Ended up being a bad ground. It was easy to fix because you could take the cover off. Small piece of aluminum foil or solder fixed it like new. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17072026#post17072026
Also i assume you guys are talking about the international version..? Anyone with US ATT version experience this issue yet?
Rant: These forums need separating... Nothing is interchangeable between the two phones..

It would be nice to know if the problem shows its ugly head on the lte/4g versions, its def got to be reported, if its hardware they will have to recall or fix them, and they cant turn away people who are rooted or have custom roms if it hardware. Hi sharpshooterr, yes op is you, i couldnt remember your name untill i seen it lol. Same test on the onex with android 4.1.1 with sense 4+ shows the screen is perfect, theres not even any lag when drawing either. Things like this shouldnt be getting through quality control on high end flagship devices, really shows HTC is going down hill fast.
As of now i think your testing might be a little flawed, you are using the wrong test. This is a line draw test, not a touch test. Its liable to act the same for everyone when just touching. How does it draw for you? Draws fine for me. the thing about touching then touching again and both dots show is not any sort of test IMO because again this is a LINE DRAW test. Maybe download some of the touch and multitouch tests from the market and try those.
Dont get me wrong, if there is something wrong then it needs to be addressed. I applaud you for trying to bring it public. You should look into some other tests though. HTC will not pay any attention to this issue if its brought to them like this. Get some more info, more tests, different tests.. The more the merrier
With the information i've read here it does sound software related though.. custom roms can fix it and firmware updates can break it. Doesn't sound hardware to me.

Ok, ive tested the same drawing test screen on the onex, doesnt happen, soon as you touch the screen it registers under your finger, the screen has to register the first touch in that same spot your finger is on no matter what your doing, this is why its clicking in other places and rubber banding when your scrolling, its registering to late, and the line drawing lags like f---k. When your drawing your keeping your finger on it so its going to register eventually in the place you want it, its no good when your scrolling. Ive reproduced the same in gesture search, and again on the onex it doesnt do it in gesture search. Keep in mind there both running android 4.1.1 with 4+ sense, the only screen difference is the glass. If what your saying is true then the onex should be the same way so i know its not down to he test app along with the other tests ive done. Eitherway theres def a problem with scrolling.Your probably right about HTC not doing anything.EDIT: Ive decided to refund or sell it and carry on using the onex, it just seems faster, battery last longer.

With the exception of insert coin my phone is the same. I do not have this problem. Something is wrong with the rom, your kernel or your phone if you are having touch screen issues.
I am unlocked, running elegancia, rooted. I do not have TWRP flashed as there are issues charging when the battery dies. Even when i did I never had touch screen issues.
Multi touch is useless also, only 2 fingers register, on a brandnew high end device and it only supports 2 finger multitouch, oh yes, i have a touch screen app that actually registers a soon as you touch the screen, but its only one app, all others i tested do as i described so i really do not know what to think, its def not hardware, its down to the software, we should get 4.2.1 soon and hopefully it will be gone, as the op said, i dont think HTC will do anything, especially now i found an app that makes the touch work as it should. So, basically, dont worry to much, its not the hardware. Ive boxed my onex+ back up and im using the onex untill new OS, i might even flash stock nexus 4 OS on the onex.

To get the device to register more than 2 fingers go into settings -Display, gestures & buttons - turn off under gestures - HTC gestures (uncheck) this will give you up to 10 multitouch points.

I think what he said is absurd, I didn't disable HTC gestures and enabled "show touches" under developer options and the screen picks up my 10 fingers.

wow absurd huh? I can confirm that it is NOT absurd and works the way he posted it... even if you hit show touches in development, and leave htc gestures checked, none of the multitouch testing apps pick up more than 2 touches... even though you can see more, they dont register as touches in apps and games.. So... in order to have the full 10 point multitouch, no matter how absurd you think it is, HTC gestures must be unchecked.. Google it

You misunderstand, I'm saying that it's absurd that boe323's saying the device can only support up to two touches and multi-touch is useless. Since you yourself said it will register up to 10 touches with the correct setting then it IS absurd that he claims it can only pick up two. Even the HTC gesture settings clearly says 3 finger-touches so that in itself made his statement of only two-touch support absurd.
It seems that you think I'm disagreeing with ihavoc, you should improve your reading comprehension.

i believe its a hardware issue. i have send my HTC ONE three times to AT&T for a replacement phone, and i still get the purple camera with THREE different phones........ so i talked to the supervise about it, he was surprised about it........ he said we are not aware of this issue!!! even he talked with a tech guy on the other line and he is kinda WHAAAAT !!!??? so they google it and saw what im talking about...... he is going to send me another phone "4th one", and he said from what i see HTC should fix this issue with 4.3, i replied by "i did an update for three HTC one to 4.3 with no luck" so what are you talking about........
anyhow, i started to lose faith in HTC .... i think HTC financial problems has something to do with rushing HTC one without fully test, even you can tell with the rough finishing around the charging port, and headset jack ...etc
i love HTC but sadly they going downhill :crying:
