[Q] soft brick i9300 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I searched xda before starting this tread but i didnt find anything relevant.
I was using cm10.1 on my galaxy s3 along with cwm. Everything ranned normal and smooth.
I used it for more then 2 month's and then suddenly my phone went off.
Now when i reboot it i only get a weird grey/green screen. Not even the samsung galaxy logo or the cyanogenmod boot logo.
Just this grey screen.
I tried starting up recovery by pressing volume up, home button and powerbutton but the same grey screen appear.
What can i do?

This is how it looks.
Btw, is there any way this could be warranty?

Try is all you can do say it suddenly died you suspect SDS .
Depends upon the service centre but technically your warranty is with the vendor and Samsung's is a separate limited warranty .

[Q] Boot loop, please help

Hi Pros,
I am very new to this and just created by ID after my phone went into a boot loop.
I have been using a galaxy S3 (GT-I9300) that i bought from a friend for the last 3 months. It worked perfect and I loved it. However today while calling a friend the phone hanged. I tried to restart and nothing happened so i pulled the battery out and restarted it. Since then the phone has been continuously restarting. On researching i realized that there is a term for this - "boot loop".
I tried the Volume Up + Power + Home and went into recovery mode. I wiped the data and wiped the cache. It did not help.
I tried the Volume down + Power + Home and went into Download Mode - ODIN (this would mean my friend flashed it before he gave it to me). I downloaded a custom stock ROM and used ODIN 3.0 to update it. It successfully finished but the phone still keeps restarting. I can only get till the screen to select the language and then it restarts.
I am very confused now and need help to fix this.
If you can get to the language screen then it's not a boot loop.. I'm sure..
Can you boot into recovery using vol up + home + power.. What do you see then?
What stock firmware did you flash and where from? Is the right region?

Thanks for replying. I get the language screen but before I can select anything it just re-boots.
In recovery i see the following options
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
How can I know if the region is right? I have it from a friend so I am not sure what region I am looking for. I download the stock ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610.
What do you think might the problem be?
In that section do a factory reset then clear the cache then factory reset again..
Then install the Poland stock rom
Edit: You may have to change the country code after its been flashed

I did a factory reset -> clear cache -> factory reset from the recovery mode and installed the Poland stock ROM. It completed successfully as well. However the same problem persists. The phone starts, boots and shows the Samsung icon and then in about 15 seconds again restarts.
The following is the log from the ODIN.

I assume I am rooted if i can go into ODIN mode using Volume down + Home + Power. I got the phone from a friend who I cannot trace now. So I am at your mercy.
Root is a word i just heard today when I wanted to fix my phone.
Most probably not rooted considering tha your recovery doesn't contain the option to flash from sd card ...

Yepp that all looks the real deal.. You could try flashing a Cm10 ROM..
Rest the phone and cache again
Edit
Download that top nightly and extract it then let odin find the file and flash

Thanks Guys. I now understand that I am not rooted. I am downloading the CyanogenMod.
How do you think can this happen? Is some App causing the issue? I am try to understand that might be the cause of this. Can this be a hardware issue?
It could well have been an app that caused the problem in the first place but it's more likely the ROM.. Now since your not sure what ROM it was on its hard to Pont a finger at why..
When you format all apps and data are gone. Except the stuff in internal and external storage.. I.e Music and photos..
I don't think think that it is a hardware issue as it's most likely it would not boot to language menu.. Could be wrong though
Keep us informed on how it's going!
I personally don't like odin ... my advice is to roit your phone and then you'll have more options to fix issues

Yeh I agree it's easier without it but..
How can he do that when it's in a boot loop.. The issue at hand is he has no ROM installed..
I rooted my phone using sgs3 toolkit by Mike , you don't need a rom installed jyst boot in download mode and follow the instructions.

Guys,
Here is the latest update. I downloaded the stock ROM based on the model number and region and flashed my phone using ODIN.
The issue still persists, but in a very weird manner. The phone boots, then stays on for about 60 seconds. During this 60 seconds, you can call, text, surf and do whatever you want. Then the Phone re-starts. Then the phone is usable again for some time before re-starting.
Does this give you pros any idea on what might be wrong? Is this a boot-loop?
Latest Update:-
After a 4-5 restarts, the phone did not restart for the last one hour. I could text and even check my voice mails. The phone is the stock ROM and I have not installed any apps yet.
Then it all started again with a different frequency. Reboot and phone usable for 60 seconds-15 minutes and then restart!!!!
Now I am confused even more and want to get to the bottom of this issue.
1. Can this be a hardware issue?
2. Why did the issue start in the first place?
3. When I flashed ROM from a different region, can the phone detect that and restart it?
4. Is it because I am not rooted?
5. If I root the device, can i install ROM from different region?
Please pros, any guesstimate is appreciated.
Is not a boot loop mate. Endless reboots without start is .

Probably half SDS.
More info please.
1) Were you rooted?
2) What does download mode say now?
3) What are Odin errors?
if you don't see product name in download mode, you surely bricked the phone. SDS! service center.

Custom is a result of Half SDS which you have. This is why I asked what download mode said, so I could confirm my diagnosis.
You have to send it to service centre. They may or may not fix it under warranty, even though it is completely their fault.

whats about hard brick sd card recovery bootloader?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581166
i have same working s3 on android 5.1.1 -> one idea is to safe working bootloader to sd card and flash the bricked phone.
I found out that "cm-12.1-20151016-UNOFFICIAL-temasek-i9300-V18.0-ds94-FIXED.zip"
using 4.1.2 bootloader (i9300xxemc2) which can cause bootloop on i9300.
Another i9300 with stock firmware using i9300xxugna8 with bootloader 4.3 should avoid bootloop, however forbid downgrade to earlier versions.
Based on this information, anyway to debrick phone without replacing emmc?

Hi Ashyx,
First off let me thank you for all your posts on the Samsung A5 SM-5100, producing countless scripts/files/etc.
I've been following many of posts on Rooting, unlocking. etc the Samsung A5100 for a couple of weeks now. With the aim of installing Google Apps onto my phone.
I am running Lollipop 5.1.1 and am not sure whether it is an Exynos or a Snapdragon processor.
Background:
My wife just bought me a China version of the SM-A5100 which blocks or does not come installed with any google services.
In my Settings > About Phone > Software Info screen, my build number is a LMYX.A5100ZCS1API4. However, when i boot into recovery mode it states:
Android System Recovery <3e>
LMYX.A5100ZHU1APE1.
Q1a. Which of these two is the correct firmware for my phone?
Q1b. I have downloaded the latest Hong Kong (which i believe to be google friendly) firmware A5100ZZH1API2 from samsung-firmware.org
but have not flashed it as I am afraid to brick my phone. Will this software version help me get closer to a google'd phone and even remove some of the other Chinese software that I am having a hard time uninstalling?
So far, I have rooted my phone using your CF-Auto-Root-a5xltechn, with Crom Service, and Odin flashing tool. I have also downloaded a Gapps zip file i believe to be suitable for my phone. However, I am not sure how to flash it. So far, I have been able to boot it in its original recovery mode which gives me 3 options:
Apply update from ADB
Apply update from External Storage
Apply update from Cache.
However, when i try any of these options it states that the above 3 are disabled.
I am now at the step of trying to get either CWM or TWRP for my phone so I can flash Gapps.zip from a custom recovery mode. However, there has not been anything developed on CWM or TWRP for my SM-A5100.
Q2a. Am I on the right track to getting Gapps on my smartphone?
Q2b. Are there any other ways to get Gapps?
I will be happy to try anything at this stage so am happy to test your TWRP even if its not necessary to googlify my phone. You've taught me lots so far, so thanks again.

Hi Ashyx,
First off let me thank you for all your posts on the Samsung A5 SM-5100, producing countless scripts/files/etc.

Thanks.
You know there have been 25 downloads since posting this and not one has had the decency to report back.
So I'm guessing it works fine otherwise there'd be posts to the contrary.
I suggest you flash twrp first so you can back up your device.
You should be fine flashing the Hong Kong firmware. It will either flash or it won't.
In any case you will have that twrp backup to recover with.
Thanks will we use in A510F in exynos chip board ?

THanks for the tip. I've tried to flash both:
twrp_3.0.2-1_sm-a5100_61016
and
twrp_3.0.2-1_sm-a5100_5816
Flashing is fine but it cannot boot into recovery mode. It just hangs forever. I've posted the flash log for your reference

Have you unlocked the bootloader and enabled OEM unlock?
If you could also post the recovery log in cache/recovery

So after all of this, I realized all I needed was to install the Hong Kong firmware on this form. I haven't gone down the road of redoing any of the TWRPs as all i wanted was just to get google on my phone. Nonetheless thanks and I have donated a little to show my appreciation.
Cheers
Hi, ashyx.
It seems that there have been a A5100-TWRP3021.tar recovery file that I can flash in before this build.
What is the difference between A5100-TWRP3021.tarthe and your build?
Is the A5100-TWRP3021.tar build from you too?

Stuck with 'Set Warranty Bit : recovery'
Hi Asphyx
I have followed the procedure on my Galaxy A5100, the Flash with Odin went well but when I have to reboot in recovery mode, the phone stay on the start screen with "Galaxy A5(6)" and a text on top left in yellow that says : "Set Warranty Bit : Recovery". It won't boot to TWRP and stay stuck on this screen. (I have waited more than 15 minutes!). I have to reboot my phone with 'Power + Home + Volume down" and after it reboot to the system but never goes in recovery.
My Galaxy A5100 has a recent update with Android Marshmallow, does your TWRP recovery is compatible with this version of firmware?
Firmware : A5100ZHU1BQB1
Thank you.
Hi Asphyx
I got the same error like the @sonic1200 guy when I flash the twrp on my A5100(Hong Kong) on android 6.0.1 version and it stucks at 'Set Warranty Bit : recovery'. I think the problem is since the twrp is not updated for android 6.0.1 it is not working. Confirmed that recovery is not accessible and stucks forever. Would you mind if you take a look at the updated A5100 6.0.1 firmware and modify the recovery to us? Appreciated if you do so.
PS: the firmware version is A5100ZHU1BQB1
Best regards,
Isaiah

TWRP for the Samsung Galaxy A5 SM-A5100 - Qualcomm MSM8939
Tester required to test the build below. If you try this please ensure you have the stock firmware to hand incase of issues.
This will trip knox and possibly void your warranty.
Prerequisites:
Bootloader must be unlocked with CROM SERVICE apk and OEM UNLOCK enabled in developer settings.
twrp_3.0.2-1_sm-a5100_61016
Disclaimer: rooting trips your knox counter and may void your warranty.
