[Q] Samsung Galaxy S II Jellybean overheating - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am unfortunately a bimbo when it comes to the mobile phones. I have tried to find an answer to my question, but I only found guesses, nothing spesific or helpful. I am hoping to find someone who understands the CPU/modem of Samsung phones, please bear with me!
Samsung Galaxy S II
GT-I9100
Android 4.1.2
Kernel 3.0.31-889555
Build JZ054K.I9100XWLSJ
Not sim-locked, not rooted. Purchaced in Finland September 2012, should be normal "untouched" phone.
Upgraded to Jellybean (right?) a couple of months ago by selecting the option from the phone. Kies and me, not working together. After every OS update I have done a factory reboot and installed the apps back, because some people on the forums have suggested it as a good precautionary measure. Things have always gone smoothly after updates.
The problem: Nowdays the phone overheats. It gets so hot that last time this happened the sim card got twisted and malformed. Also the battery drains fast when the phone gets hot. The hottest place on the phone is right under the camera lense (CPU?), not the battery. Most of the time wifi is on, mobile data off, GPS off and bluetooth off. Wifi signal is excellent.
This did not happen before Jellybean, otherwise I would only blame my extensive use of the phone. I have about 100-105 apps, Lookout, Juice Defender, about 10 news widgets, irc client, Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, Photoapps, Picasa tool, Olivephone etc. I watch movies, write docs. The memory certainly is in use, and the data transfer is 3,76 GB in 6 days over wifi (according to My Data Manager app).
The posts I found, suggested that the problem might be in media scanner or modem, and indeed software related. Is there any way of knowing this for sure? How can I read data like CPU use, temperatures etc or is it even helpful? Any other possible reasons? Is there a way to fix the problem without rooting the phone? As a bimbo I am scared of going to that route, because things tend to go wrong. If someone suggests a fix by simply installing a modem, can you create a return point or somehow make sure things can get back to what they were? I can always ask the seller company, DNA Finland, but doubt they know anything, and if they want me to return the phone as malfunctioning one, I'll probably cry as it took some time to get used to this.
Thank you!

Try a different battery first. See if the issue persists.

Heating
I get that alot too.
Usually when Im on Chrome surfing website the part of the camera lens gets soooo hot, I have to turn it off for it to cool down. I notice it happens alot when I'm outdoors.
What I do it I remove the battery and slot it back in let it cool down a bit before turning it on.
I'm at a lost too sometimes but nothing major so didn't bother. Does your battery drain very quickly when it is overheating? Mine does.

No disrespect to to the other guys but their responses seemed pretty useless am I right? I've had some experience with this which is why I feel qualified to answer, hopefully if it's still an issue a couple of months since you posted that I may be of help.
It's not something you're going to find a permanent fix for and my best advice is report it to your manufactuer - it is VERY likely to be to do with the jellybean software itself and in terms of a long-term solution you can hope for a further update to be released (it appears to be quite a common problem since the latest upgrade a few months ago).
Now there are things you can do to reduce it. Once it runs dry of battery (switch it off occasionally if it's melting your sim in the process!). Plug it in and let it charge switched off to full capacity. Repeat this process once. You should find that the phone's temperature stays relatively healthy (as does the battery life for ... weeks ( sorry I can't predict how long, for me it was a 4 or 5 before I had to repeat process)
Anyway, to recap, reporting it is important. Unless they're formally told about it then there's no issue.
Another long term solution is to go back to stock ICS. This does not involve routing but does involve wiping the software putting a new one on from scratch. But if you've done factory resets then I'd say you've got enough know how for a stock rom flash, they're not difficult and you'll find plenty of assistance on how to do that on xda.
All the best.

I would try a different modem too.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

If you ask me, I'm a 100% inclined to the modem being the main cause for this. If you can, post the baseband number that appears under settings>> phone info. Baseband, modem and radio all refer to the same. It's good to know what modem you're using, I have a list of modems I've personally tested that resulted in overheating problems.
BTW you should try to fix this asap cuz this overheating messes you battery, it gets inflated. I've had some mayor overheating problems but never had a malformed SIM card. Sounds like you have a portable BBQ grill.
I honestly don't know if you can change modems without rooting your phone but I strongly recommend you root it. Changing modems on rooted SGS2s is a piece of cake.

Same thing happend, exept that the battery overheats and it's very hot
is the battery worn out ? it got very hot last night and showed a warning message

If you've had the battery for a while, yeah, try a new one; particularly if the battery appears a bit 'swollen' or feels 'spongy' rather than firm like a new battery does.

I am using 4.3 ROM on any of my phones. and facing regular problems with few thing and those are bugging me bad.
My phone heats up a lot however battery performance has gone bad from worst and still not giving me more then 8 hours with very minimum usage.
Also, while charging, the battery would easily reach up to 47-48 degree Celsius within a minute or two due to which I always have to charge it while keeping it turned off.
Any idea what can be done to resolve it? I am too scared to do regular usage on my phone thinking it would drain out at important time and heating too much can cause severe damage to internals of the phone?

I am having a similar problem on my Galaxy S2 since upgrading to Jelly Bean. But the circumstances are different. If I keep the phone in my trouser pocket I find that it will occasionally become hot and will not respond to the on button. If I then take the battery out and immediately reinsert it the phone starts correctly but the battery will have run down appreciably (usually battery is only down by 10% in a day but after these episodes it will be down by 50% in only the few hours it has been in the trousers). The phone is set to start with a PIN number and Wifi, GPS and data are turned off. The overheating has never occurred if the phone is not in a pocket. I thought that some combination of button presses was causing the trouble so invested in a hard case - but this has not stopped the problem completely although it occurs less often.

[Q] International gs2 updates

My apologies if this has been asked elsewhere, I searched and couldn't find the answer. I have a galaxy s2. the galaxy s 2 is the gt9100. The phone is unlocked, wasn't bought from a carrier etc. running totally stock, no root.
My question is, why is my galaxy s2 still on 2.3.4, when overseas international galaxies are running higher versions? I know it's not because I'm waiting on a carrier. Is it Samsung new Zealand who has to approve the update through kies and they have just been too useless to do it so far? Does my region matter on an international unlocked phone?

It's still running 2.3.4 because you're waiting on a push update from Samsung OTA, or via Kies. Actually, you're lucky you're on 2.3.4. I was on 2.3.3 for nearly 4 months before I got tired of waiting.
If you want 2.3.5 or 2.3.6, I would just get the firmware and flash it yourself. Takes less than 5 minutes after you know what you're doing, and you don't need root to do it. Intratech's official i9100 firmwares thread has all the firmwares for unlocked GS2s, official from Samsung in post 2, instructions (READ THESE) in post 1. The only change he made in them is for any that are 2.3.5 or newer, he replaced the bootloaders with the older ones which still allow the use of a USB jig to reset the binary counter. Otherwise they are completely stock.
Thanks. Is this an issue with Samsung NZ in particular? I'm moving to Australia next month, so is there a chance this will just happen when i get there? I've flashed plenty of phones, but i'm really nervous about flashing this one as it's my shiny new toy I'm actually totally happy with stock, only issues are with battery life, not bad but not great, and with the phone getting hot sometimes. Do you have these issues with the later firmware?

I honestly don't know. But I doubt it. I think it is based on the phone and where it was bought, not necessarily where it is in operation. But I don't know that for sure; that's just my own speculation. But then again, who knows? I use a UK bought i9100 in the US, and the i9100 isn't sold in the US - which could by why I never got an update pushed to me OTA or via Kies.

I flashed XXKI3, which is 2.3.5, to my phone, and I don't have those issues. But I also installed Green Power Premium on my phone, which helps to save battery by managing my network connections (both 3G/HSPA/HSPA+ and WiFi) while my screen is off. With how I've got it set up, I've managed to get about a day and a half of battery with moderate usage. Moderate usage = about 3.5 hours of the screen being on during that time, which includes surfing the internet, email, texts, calls, and some games.
You should check out Green Power to see if it helps with your battery. I have it set to completely shut down data if the screen is off between 11;15pm and 7:15am (hours I'm normally sleeping) unless the screen is on. During that time, I typically lose about 2-4% of power if I'm not using the phone. During the day, I have it set if the screen is off to turn data on for 1 minute every 15 minutes. I should let you know though, that the night time settings are only available with the premium version of the app, which does cost some money. (but not much - under $2 USD)
If this helps you out with battery and makes you happy, you may not need to upgrade.
When do you notice it getting hot?
The above posted link is for stock firmwares.............. If you follow Intratech's instructions exactly, there won't be an issue. You can always reflash to original just as easily if you don't like it. Just take note of your phone product code so you can find and download it easily again. You may have this on you box already.
Edit: If your using the phone or some app is running the CPU whilst the phone is charging, it will get hot.
Edit 2: Deleted wrong info
Yeah worth thinking about. I'm running juice defender pro, which switches data etc off when screen is off. Admittedly i use it very heavily, a lot of gps\navigation with screen on, with music playing in the background, but i went through 2 batteries in about 14 hours the other day.
The phone seems to get hot in lower coverage areas, when using gps for long time, or within one minute of loading graphically intense games like mc3. Not too worried about the gaming, i have a tablet for that, but it makes me nervous when it gets hit doing fairly mundane tasks.
I'm hoping samsung get's their act together and pushes these updates soon. I'll try when i get to australia and post back here. I'm sure samsung aus should have much better support than samsung nz.
I'm not that stressed and can wait. But it just seems really strange that several revisions havent been pushed to an international phone. Can't blame it on a carrier this time!
If it helps, this phone was parallel imported. I think it's probably from Hong Kong.

LOL, if you're constantly using the phone, no amount of updates is going to solve your battery draining!

Yes, in lower coverage areas, the phone will constantly be searching for signal. This takes power, and will probably be searching for all available bands. Not much you can do about this, aside from maybe looking into a microcell if your carrier has them. (or will have them since you are moving to Australia)
And using GPS will indeed get the phone hot - it is using both the GPS chip and mobile data, which are two of the biggest power hogs.
But that said, I would STILL recommend at least going to 2.3.5 by using a firmware from that link I posted. Instructions are very clear, and you will only benefit.

[Q] i777 multiple errors

Hello guys,
I have never posted on the forum before, yet read and used some info to troubleshoot different situations I have been through, so hi to everybody.
But this time I am facing a weird problem, which is presented as follow,
The phone suddeny toggles very fast between driving mode, voice talk, etc. Even a couple of times when I was talking to someone, it toggled to speaker mode, which you can imagine is very annoying. Also, Google Maps went crazy, as in less than five minutes, it showed me in 7 different countries all around the globe, and in the middle of the ocean (location pointed using wifi, not gps per se)
And I shall also comment that I was having trouble to get it charged, said something like the voltage was too high; the only way I could charge the battery was turning off the phone and then charging it.
Guess I am lucky that my PC still recognizes the phone without problem, and I can access all my stored files, but I don't know for how long it will last like this, so I am kind of in a hurry here to fix the problem while I still have the tools to try to.
I want also to denote that I did let the poor guy fall to the floor a couple of times in the past, nothing too serious though, but it is very strange that all these errors I told you about started when the phone was doing nothing but charging on my desk from my port USB on my PC, and a lot of time, say weeks, after the fall to the floor incidents.
My specs are
Android
4.0.3
Baseband

Kernel

Thank you guys for taking your time to read this, and thank you in advance for helpping me out in anyway you can.
I have absolutely no idea, but I can offer this:
Remove ALL personal files.
Create backups of apps (TiBu).
Have a copy of the ROM you want downloaded.
Do a complete full wipe.
Do it again.
Flash the ROM.
Reboot and let us know.
Until someone more knowledge chimes in, this will help to eliminate any possible software failure.

[Q] 920 Rebooting Problem

I have been having this problem pretty much since day 1, I've also searched the Nokia Support Discussions and it seems quite a lot of people are experiencing this. I was actually surprised that my Go-To forum here at XDA doesn't have a thread on it.
My Black Lumia 920 (EE, Phones4U, Unlocked) reboots on average about 5 times a day. Yesterday was probably the worst yet with roughly 8 reboots. That may have been more noticeable to me because I used a SIM which requires a pin though.
What I've noticed:
-The device is roughly 10 days old.
-It has been rebooting an average of 5-8 times a day
-It mostly reboots when idle (so when I'm not using it)
-I've had it reboot only twice while in use when making a call
-I've had it reboot only once when playing music.
-I've only ever noticed it rebooting when it is face up
-Rebooting happens regardless of the SIM (although I have not used it without a SIM at all) (Used both a micro SIM and a SIM cut down to size, used the original carrier SIM and other SIM, no difference to rebooting behaviour)
-I only turn on the radios I need when I need them, so 2G active 100%, 3G/4G, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC off for 70% of the time.
-It is not due to battery drain as I usually have about 40% battery at the end of the day.
This has been my experience with the rebooting problem. The figures and estimates I'm giving are not over stating and I've tried giving as much detail so as to try and provide useful information for a solution.
Has anyone else been having this problem?
Has anyone found a working solution?
Has anyone heard or read anything concerning a fix for this?
nope - blue one on AT&T
I'd look at your installed apps, apps enabled to run in the background, etc. It should not be rebooting at all.
I have seen some posts like yours on the internets, but its not a "common" as in most 920s do it problem. Which leads me to think its some issue with an app or apps installed on some phones.
Possible solution
Hi kyrirhcp
I had a similar problem. I reset the phone which bricked it and then used this tutorial to un-brick it:
http://forums.wpcentral.com/nokia-l...after-reset-flash-process-defined-inside.html
The only difference is that I downloaded the "Nokia Data Package Manager" (not sure where from but I'm sure you can find it). This software allows you to download the firmware files directly into the correct folder. You could also look at this tutorial:
http://aydon.wordpress.com/2012/11/29/how-to-flash-your-lumia-920english/
The ROM you want is the EE specific one. It even specifies the colour of the phone. The version number is: 1232.2110.1244.3011
If you reset the device and it does not brick (i.e. freeze up on reformat) then the problem is solved and you don't need to worry. If it bricks (which it probably will) then you need to flash to recover the phone.
God bless
andrew-in-woking
Hi Andrew, thanks for your suggestions but I'm avoiding it like the plague if I'm honest. Resetting my phone and risking a brick, even with your added fix tutorial really doesn't seem worth it. Also I'm assuming that the problem you PM'd me with regarding the loss of some functionality is a result of the fix you suggest. I'm not yet willing or ready to f with my device the same way as I did with my SGNote, even more so since developers haven't yet gotten the experience they have with android. Anyway, i seem to have perhaps solved the problem at least for my device. I changed the regional settings for a completely unrelated matter and I have not since had a single reset or the accompanying massive battery drain. It's now been 3 days. The only other change was that I removed tunein radio an reinstalled it. So it seems that my problem has been solved (fingers crossed, knock on wood, ftou ftou ftou, wearing an evil eye). I hope this helps others with their problems and makes this amazing device useable to those that had this problem.

Try removing Whatsapp if you've got that installed.
I have had a lot of the same problems. My phone locks up a few times per day. This is the 2nd Lumia 920 I've had. After getting the second with the same problem, I decided to wait for the Portico update that was supposed to address random restarts.
Since then, I've been communicating with Nokia and Windows Phone support on twitter. All they suggest is uninstalling apps, disabling radios, contacting individual developers, and resetting your phone.
I have a hard time wrapping my mind around that. How is it possible for a user level application to take down the whole operating system/firmware?? There are plenty of crappy apps on the Windows Phone Store, I don't think it should be up to me to figure out which is destroying my experience.
I used to root/hack all my old Windows Mobile phones/android phones. When it locked up, it really was up to me to fix it and figure it out!! I chose Windows Phone since it had the locked ecosystem similar to Apple. While that may not appeal to everyone, I have a very busy life and I don't want to spend more time screwing with my phone. It just needs to work! This is my 3rd Windows phone and it's been the worst so far.

[Q] Phone keeps shutting down

Hi guys.
My phone shuts down at random moments. I can boot it up again by holding the power button for about 10 seconds. Sometimes, not always, the phone feels hot and batterylife dropped. I have been struggling with this problem ever since i got this phone. I hoped to solve it with installing a new kernel and rom. I am now on Slimbean 3.1.0. The phone was initially on XLQ6 4.0.4. This didn't change anything, unfortunately.
I have also tried:
- removing external SD
- placing a new battery (which has no room to move, in case anyone suggests the battery might be moving)
- wiping caches
The strange thing is that my friend has bought his i9100 together with mine in the same order. He is also on XLQ6 and is experiencing the same issues. Less often than me, however.
My smalband is still on XLQ6. Is it possible that this causes my problems? Or is it more likely that my friend and me simply bought phones from a bad batch or something (hardware related)? I really don't want to send back my phone. That is my absolute last resort.
EDIT: Problem solved! Installing the application "Load Monitor" and enabling the "wake lock" function has done the trick. No more shutdowns or reboots!
Anyone?
2 devices with the same issue?
I'd be at the store where I bought it right now.
I will do that when I am absolutely sure that it is hardware related. However, if anyone has a potential solution I would really like to solve this issue myself.

Same with me. change from 4.0.4 WLPT to 4.0.4 WLPY but problem still presists.
Does anyone know if changing smalband (if that is possible?) could make a difference? Because that is the only similarity to the original state of my phone. A lot of AT&T users in the USA experienced the same problems also with 4.0.4. However, nobody can come up with a solution.

If it is heating near the camera, it's facing death soon.
If it is new and warranty isn't voided, why not flashing the carrier ROM and get a new one?

Because I don't like to lose my phone for a couple of weeks. And I prefer to fix these things myself. I have seen so many topics about this on XDA and Google. There must be a solution to it.
Is it possible that these problems are caused by my modem? That is the only unchanged thing since I have had this phone.
I might have found a possible solution. I've read something on a Dutch forum about sim-cards causing these issues. So I have placed a new sim-card and the problem hasn't appeared in the last 3 days. Before that, the problem was occuring about 3-6 times in one day. It's too early to say this has solved my problem, but it definitely made a difference so far. If it keeps functioning perfectly for the next couple of days I will close this topic.
Symptoms were merely reduced. Phone still shuts down approximately each 2 days. Much better than it was before though. Why would a sim-card change reduce, but not solve the problem? This is starting to hurt my brain.

You may experience sleep of death. What WiFi chipset do you have? I had the same issue on a Murata Wi-Fi chipset.
Yup, Murata chipset. I've googled some more on SoD. I have now installed an app called "Load Monitor" and enabled Wake Lock in preferences. This should prevent the phone from going into deep sleep, apparantly.
Some portugal carrier had a problem with lte sim card or something like that.
I really don't see how a sim card can actually mess with a phone.
Maybe the enabling of some features screws it up.

In my case Samsung Service Team replaced the motherboard. My new MB has a Samsung Electronics wifi chipset. Two weeks now and no SoD.
That sounds good. However, ever since I have installed Load Monitor my phone runs fine. It drains approximately 40% of my entire battery, but it lasts easily until the end of the day.
But again, I shouldn't get too excited. Sim-card change seemed to work in the first few days as well.
Will be continued...
It has been over a week since I have installed Load Monitor. My phone hasn't shut down once. Problem appears to be solved! I hope more people will read this topic, because I have seen a lot of desperate people during my search to a solution.
The only disadvantage is the battery usage of the application. I now have approximately 40-50% at the end of the day instead of 60-70%.

Overheating

How hot is too hot for the snapdragon 600? Between 50-60c is what im normally running. Even when just browsing the internet and the phone gets pretty hot to the touch right under the camera.
Just got this phone. Galaxy s4 on Verizon completely stock and have already factory reset.
Anybody? I'm trying to figure out if I should even bother calling Verizon or if this happens to all S4's

That seems a little on the warm side, even for stock, if I were you I would try to figure out if an app is being a CPU hog causing it to heat up.
My phone is 40 C tops... There's something definitely wrong here. Do you have a gps running the background? LTE on constantly?Tons of Data being constantly pushed?
Apps are ok. Im on wifi right now, sync is off, cpu usage is about 15% while reading this thread on tapatalk and im hovering about 55 celcius. If its not common then i guess ill call verizon tomorrow
Mine gets the overheating warning fast, well lte all day isn't helping it.
My phone always seemed hotter using the stock ROM. It stays much cooler on AOSP. My CPU will get up to around 70-75C during a stress test but normally under regular conditions it won't get above 55C.
SD Card
Problem: Overheating
A lot of people have reported that the S4 is getting very warm or even hot at times. Most people are experiencing this during movie playback or while gaming. Some had a problem with random apps, during calls, while browsing the web, or while using the camera. A few have experienced an issue while charging. Any smartphone is going to heat up with extensive use and hot weather will have an impact too.
Possible solutions:
It could be a rogue app. Make sure you have the latest updates for all your apps. Fire up the Play Store, tap Menu then My apps, and you should see available Updates at the top right. If you have an up to date app that always seems to cause the problem, then try to find an alternative.
Some people report that media server could be the culprit. Try removing the MicroSD card and backing up all the files onto your computer. Reinsert the card into your S4 and format it. This might solve the problem.
If it is a software problem then an update might solve it. There are reports that Sprint S4 handsets have already received an OTA (over the air) update, but we don’t know what it was for. In any case this solution means waiting.
If your S4 continues to heat up,and you aren’t using it heavily, then it’s possible you have a hardware problem. Contact your retailer, carrier, or Samsung to report the problem and see if you can get a replacement.
This work for me hope for you too

^ I saw that article too and tried removing my SD card, still heated up. Thank you for posting that though. Since this is a corporate phone I called my cell department and asked them about it. They advised that if the phone is still working then not to worry about it. They said they will take care of it if and when damage occurs. That said we will consider this a test. If the phone still lasts a considerable amount of time then we will know this is just a hot phone. If anything else develops I will be sure to update you guys. Thank you for ask the help.
Also according to this 60c is on the warm side but still safe. I know its not our phone, but in regards to thermal properties a chip is a chip right?
